THE “NEW NORMAL” Fall 2020 was unlike the start of any previous school year. School looked a little different with extensive health and safety measures in place. Our community was excited to be reunited but apprehensive of what to expect. It will always be remembered as an unforgettable year, from staff creativity rethinking the student experience to launching new initiatives that met with public health guidelines.
INSPIRING EDUCATORS CA educator and instructional leader Natalie Vardabasso launched a 27-episode podcast, EduCrush, in August 2020 that explores what education could be through conversations with inspirational teachers, leaders, innovators and activists. EduCrush’s second season launched September 2021.

FOREST OF FRIGHT Unable to hold our typical drama productions, the Integrated Studies students and teachers prepared an outdoor haunted forest experience for drama, art, music, multimedia, and Spanish students to showcase their talents and terrify the community.

SUPPORT FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT The James Chaput Bursary Fund provided $348,000 in bursaries in 2020-21, in addition to $97,000 of funds raised by the Calgary Academy Parents’ Association (CAPA) to support 46 students.
ALUMNI ALTRUISM Anna Dawson (’19) donated cross-country skiing equipment to the CA Outdoor Education program.
ALUMNI PROFILE Alumnus Sean Thornhill (’09) spent the year adapting his business and work to ever-changing COVID-19 restrictions.

FEDERAL RECOGNITION Longtime teacher and instructional leader Maureen Kelly-Gibson was one of nine educators who received the 2020 National Certificate of Excellence from the Prime Minister’s Award (PMA) for Teaching.
EXEMPLARY PRACTICE AND STUDENT SHOWCASE Twice a year the Board of Directors recognizes staff and students for exemplary work, leadership, or contributions to the school community. Grade 8 student Will was honoured for his efforts building the CA Minecraft world, and for serving as a role model to his peers. Jaclyn Demmers was recognized for her innovative work inside the classroom and as part of the Balanced Assessment committee. Grade 12 student Thomas was recognized for his creativity in the drama program and collaboration in the school community. Becky Funk for her work as a Music teacher and her vision and leadership with the first-ever FestivARTS.

A DIFFERENT DIG PINK While COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the volleyball tournament the spirit of Dig Pink was stronger than ever in 2020, raising over $10,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

VOLUNTEERING FOR THE 40TH Fall 2021 marks Calgary Academy’s 40th Anniversary, and many events are underway to celebrate. Volunteers are essential to each of these events. It is incredible to see the power of parents, alumni, staff and Board Members working together to create a wonderful year of celebration.
GRADE 12 LEGACY GIFT Every year, the graduating class creates something for the rest of the CA community to benefit from. In 2020, they created the Legacy Award through raising funds to be given to one Grade 12 student annually as they leave Calgary Academy and begin to find their way in the world.

CREATING CA’S FUTURE As the 2018-2021 Strategic Plan ends in August 2021, the CA community came together to build the 2021-2025 Strategic Plan through a series of online surveys and virtual focus groups and planning sessions.

CA launched its first-ever summer school program, supporting over 90 students in seven different Grade 12 courses.
NEW FAMILY ORIENTATION Changing schools is always a big transition, but especially during a pandemic when touring the school and meeting future classmates was limited by public health restrictions.
