The world today is inundated by a digital blanket, interwoven with interfaces and functioning in tandem with a parallel digital universe. As these trends intensify, the physical realm is pushed ever closer to the virtual, a phenomenon brought about by the creation of portals that range in all types and sizes across two fundamentally different spaces. In recent decades, its manifestation in the built environment comes in the form of sensors, interfaces, processors, buses, radio waves etc., its presence ubiquitous, carried around in pockets and embedded in the surrounding infrastructure.
It is time for us to step back and look at the overall potential and possibilities that could be harnessed from the realm of the machines – cyberspace, and speculate on alternate forms of its applications to the physical space.
