CENTER FOR ARCHITECTURAL VOLUMES Fall 2020 Professor Bud Shenefelt This project called for the design of a museum that housed different architectural volumes and incorporated public spaces, such as, a library, community workshop, auditorium, research center, and gift shop. In my design, I created a finned western facade that displays all of the different volumes and hints at views into the building. The interior is divided up by a green wave system of curved walls that separate functions. One would enter the building under a sweeping ceiling condition similar to that of the Three Alliance Center in Atlanta, Georgia by Mack Scogin and Merril Elam Architects. The focus of this project was to create unique and provocative interior spaces and forms. This project was the first time I had the opportunity to design a building in its entirety and I was pushed to get it to a high level of detail. SKILLS USED • • • • • • • • 01

THE DESIGN PROCESS In creating the plan for the building, I went back and forth through adjacency studies, sections, and 3-D modeling to push my design further. This allowed me to create interesting moments not just in plan, but in section as well. The curved walls varied in height and width to create more provocative spaces.I went through countless iterations of each individual part of the structure to analyze which would be the most successful and create the most interesting spaces. I intended to create a guided promenade throughout the museum and was inspired by Mies’s Barcelona Pavilion. This had given me the idea of dividing the interior with planes (which I manipulated in my project).

LAYERED TRANSPARENCY Spring 2021 Professor Hannah Schafers The goal of this project was to use a unique material system to create a small campsite shelter for hikers. For my campsite area, I experimented with how glass could be used to create a unique and varying user experience. My main inspiration for this project was SANAA’s glass pavilion at the Toledo Art Museum. I also used the concept of layering and stacking material units that was from Atelier Vens Vanbelle’s Alex Guesthouse and some distinct construction details from Ed Ford’s Ford House. I created a layered glass facade that allows one to see nature through a unique lens of altered transparency, reflections, and refractions. As one continues into the structure, the exterior views become more distorted and the space becomes more private. The rest areas exist at the end of the rounded campsite and lay a few feet below the grade level. This also helps create a unique way to view nature.

SPRING 2021 This project allowed me to challenge the notions of how glass can be used as a design element and experiement with how to properly convey ideas using concept diagrams and post-render work via Photoshop. Each individual element on this structure is spefically designed to support my concept and material use; this includes the furniture as well (see table detail). 12

DIVIDED TRANSPARENCIES Spring 2021 Professor Hannah Schafers
This project is based on the idea of creating a multicultural restaurant and residency where three chefs come to live and work there for a month while cooking for twenty lucky guests per night. The design for this restaurant is based on the idea of a division of space through the meal prep process. This came about due to the desire for creating a unique experience each time one would visit the restaurant while also creating a connection between the chef and the guest. This project experiments with the use of a layered and varied glass wall system that is paired with colored lighting to script unique experiences in different areas of the building. These concepts are carried throughout the project and create a special experience for the guests who are invited to eat there.

ALLEY THRESHOLD Spring 2020 Professor Matt Miller This was the first major design project that I worked on at the end of my first year in the prearchitecture program at UNL. We were tasked with designing an alley threshold to be a service to the community and nearby restaurants, especially to the neighboring Ivanna Cone. I used lines of force based on nearby parking, landmarks and nodes, as well as light/shade patterns to inform design moves for the structure. My project focused on the juxtaposition between the bright, open, and inviting eastern side to the darker, more closed-off, and seemingly private western side. This project explores the ideas of what constitutes an interior space vs an exterior space as well as bridging the gap between private and public spaces. One’s experience can change with the site depending on the time of day and weather. For example, on a nice day, someone may choose the open East side, but they might hurry for shelter on the West side if it starts to rain. The angled panels on the western canopy also allow the sun in at different levels during different times of the day. Overall, the threshold allows a space for people to eat Ivanna Cone ice cream or relax during their leisure time. SKILLS USED • Lineweighting 23 • Site Analysis
