2023 J.L. TURNER LEGAL ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION CHAIR MESSAGE

Joel K. B. Winful In 1952, Black lawyers in Dallas faced discrimination within the legal profession and throughout the Dallas community. Keenly aware of the threat to their safety their livelihood, and their lives, a group of these courageous lawyers formed the Barristers Club to address some of the challenges of the times. The Barristers Club eventually became the J.L. Turner Legal Association (“JLTLA”). In the 71 years since its inception, JLTLA has continuously provided professional development and networking to its members as well as service and pro bono legal resources to the community. Continuing that commitment, in 1996 JLTLA formed the J.L. Turner Legal Association Foundation as the 501 (c)(3) nonprofit of the JLTLA. Through your support in the years since, the JLTLA Foundation has been diligently promoting legal education and the provision of legal services. In addition, each year, the JLTLA Foundation raises thousands of dollars in scholarships for deserving law students, with the recognition of these students at the annual JLTLA Foundation Gala. On behalf of the J.L. Turner Legal Association Foundation, welcome to our 2023 Annual Scholarship and Awards Gala, themed “The Royal Gala: Together We Strive for Unity.” In a June 2023 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court has signaled an end to policies that seek to remedy past racial discrimination in higher education. Across the United States, governmental and corporate programs that seek to promote diversity, equity and inclusion are under attack and/or being ended. The reality is that there is not a level playing field for people of color in the realm of higher education, nor in the legal profession. Those of you who support our mission recognize that continued efforts toward inclusion are very necessary within the legal profession. We are very grateful that you continue to stand with us in our efforts to increase the pipeline of diverse attorneys entering our profession. In 2023, I am very proud to be Chair of an organization that gives back to our local legal community by assisting minority law students. The joy that we receive from assisting these deserving students is twofold. By awarding scholarships to law students, the Foundation is not only helping them financially, we are planting a seed in the lives of each student. We understand that these minority law students represent the next generation of Black attorneys and lawyers of color. These young men and women will have an impact locally, and possibly statewide and even nationally. Our support for these students helps to keep their dreams alive and helps to further the dreams of the legal legends who were the founders of J.L. Turner Legal Association. We are hopeful that the seeds we plant today will grow and bear fruit in the form of future strong leaders of JLTLA, JLTLA Foundation and our local community. Thank you to all of our sponsors, contributors, and attendees who made tonight’s JLTLA Foundation Gala possible, including JLTLA, the JLTLA Foundation Board of Directors, the Gala Committee (especially Gala Chair Nakisha Williams), and the Scholarship Committee (especially Chair Greg Franklin). Best regards.

2023 J.L. TURNER LEGAL ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION GALA CHAIR MESSAGE

Nakisha Williams Greetings Members, Sponsors, Awardees, and Guests, It is with immense gratitude and pride that I pen this letter to acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding achievements and progress of the J.L. Turner Legal Association Foundation. I would like to welcome you to our annual Scholarship & Awards Gala, themed “The Royal Gala: Together We Strive for Unity.” Our shared commitment to promoting equality, justice, and opportunity has played a pivotal role in shaping a better tomorrow for all. Over seventy years ago, a group of visionary individuals established the Barristers’ Club with a common goal — to address the systemic disparities within the legal system and advocate for a more equitable society. Through dedication, resilience, and unwavering determination, the association has evolved into an instrumental force for change, leaving an indelible mark on the legal landscape. Throughout the years, the Association has spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at advancing the rights and opportunities of Black legal professionals, fostering inclusivity within the legal community, and fighting for justice on behalf of marginalized communities. Your dedication to mentoring aspiring lawyers, providing legal education, services for the indigent and advocating for policy changes has set a powerful precedent for future generations. The J.L. Turner Legal Association firmly believes in collaboration and inclusivity. We value the partnerships we have cultivated in the greater Dallas Metroplex over the years, which has allowed us to work together towards a more just and equitable society. Our joint endeavors have empowered us to achieve milestones that would have been inconceivable without your invaluable love and support. As we reflect on this remarkable journey, we express our deepest appreciation for your continuous support, dedication, and advocacy. Together, we will forge ahead, striving for a future where justice and equality prevail for every individual. Thank you to our sponsors who continue to support and believe in our mission. A special thank you to Paul Stafford, Immediate Past Chair & 2023 Treasurer for your hard work and dedication to fundraising efforts. Thank you to my Gala Co-Chair, KoiEles Lomas and 2021 Gala Chair, Tatiana Alexander for your guidance and support throughout the planning process. To my Committee Chairs, Jasmine Robinson, Carla Dennis, and paralegal committee members, this would not have been possible without you! You are appreciated more than words could ever express! Thank you for being an integral part of this inspiring journey for many more years to come! To my husband, Maurice Williams, thank you for your love and support! It’s been a privilege and honor to serve as the first paralegal gala chair! Thanks for the opportunity, Joel Winful, Foundation Chair. 2023 J.L. TURNER LEGAL ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT MESSAGE

Amber Hamilton Gregg Greetings, It has been my esteemed pleasure to serve as your 2023 President of the J.L. Turner Legal Association. I had the honor of serving on the board and/or on a committee for the past 10 years and I look forward to continuing to carry the torch as the Immediate Past President. This occasion is certainly fit for “Royalty” and it is a privilege to celebrate our heritage and culture with you tonight. As we continue on this historical journey, I am encouraged by the trailblazing members who have paved the way for me and my fellow colleagues. I understand the importance of our visibility in our community as we continue the fight for social justice and fairness in civil rights. J.L. Turner was a pioneer who had the courage to fight the status quo. He was a beacon to those who in his time could not practice law without being treated differently and being discriminated against because of the color of their skin. Because of the vision and determination of our organization’s founders to create an organization in 1952, The Barristers’ Club, we could become what we are today, the J.L. Turner Legal Association. Our mission is to improve the quality of life in our community through education, service and scholarship. It is a mission that guided me as the leader of this organization. Last year, I stated that one of my visions for this year as President was to organize a J.L. Turner Leadership Program. I am so proud to share that we hosted our Inaugural Leadership Class this year, which included seven local Black Law Student Association students! This was such an accomplishment for our organization as it establishes a direct pipeline of leadership into our organization. Congratulations again to the Inaugural Leadership Class Participants! We cannot wait to see you soar into leadership upon becoming attorneys in the bar. This year would not have been as successful as it has been without the efforts and support from my amazing board and outstanding committee chairs. To every one of my colleagues who served beside me, thank you for all that you do. Your time and commitment to this organization and to helping execute the goals of this year have made history. I adore each and every one of you and this organization is better because of your service to your community. Thank you to the J.L. Turner Legal Association past presidents and mentors who serve by being available to advise the current board. This year we dealt with many challenges as we saw diversity and inclusion and affirmative action attacked and key legislation overturned that affects our communities directly. Because of your support, guidance, and wisdom, we were able to navigate these unprecedented areas and partner with other minority organizations to host programming and make statements that align with our mission. I appreciate you and could not have made it through this year without you. Last but not least, congratulations to all of tonight’s scholarship winners! You are all so deserving and I look forward to seeing you continue to do amazing things as attorneys and in our legal community. My charge to everyone is to serve our legal community with passion and purpose, but also while exhibiting kindness, respect and professionalism to each other inside and outside of the courtroom. Let’s always give each other grace and lead with love, positivity, open mindedness and understanding. Thank you for allowing me to serve, J.L. 2023 J.L. TURNER LEGAL ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT-ELECT MESSAGE

Trerod Hall Ladies and gentlemen, valued supporters, and esteemed members of J.L Turner Legal Association, tonight, we come together to celebrate our rich cultural heritage at the Royal Gala, an evening dedicated to honoring our scholarship recipients, and to uplift and connect with extraordinary people. These are individuals who, despite enduring significant underrepresentation in our profession, stand as unwavering champions of justice ardently advocating for our communities. The J. L. Turner Legal Association was founded to provide opportunities for Black attorneys in Dallas. It was conceived as a platform for visibility, community building, and to advance Black representation in the profession. Attorney J.L. Turner pioneered this organization in a time where Black attorneys were excluded from the local bar association. Today, JLTLA’s membership is represented in various partner bar associations and professional groups. JLTLA’s core mission is to improve the quality of life in our community through education, service, and scholarship. This mission resonates profoundly with my own, which is to construct pathways of opportunities for other people. As I take on the role of your incoming president, I am optimistic about how we will creatively fulfill JLTLA’s mission. To realize this vision, the organization needs your influence and impact. Your contributions are imperative to its success. The value that exists in the organization expands exponentially with your involvement. Recent legislation and Supreme Court decisions have presented challenges to the hard-fought progress our ancestors achieved. JLTLA, through fulfillment of its mission, must act vigorously to combat the erosion of our civil rights. Thus, it becomes imperative for us to stand united as a community and secure the support of all members in our journey to propel the organization forward. JLTLA encourages each member to actively engage in serving the organization. Be it volunteering on a committee, facilitating CLEs, or mentoring aspiring law students, there are abundant opportunities to serve. JLTLA is also committed to forging pathways of success for our law students through mentorship, resources, and our newly founded Law Student Leadership program. Our aim is to empower these law students to become effective practitioners of tomorrow. Together, in unwavering unity, we have the power to redefine the scope of JLTLA’s contributions to future generations of Black Lawyers and paralegals in the profession. Through partnership and steadfast dedication, our organization can continue to build upon the legacy that JLTLA and its members have cultivated in Dallas since 1952. I extend a heartfelt call on each of you to collaborate with JLTLA in creating resources, growing its membership, and serving our community. A special note of gratitude goes to our Gala Committee for curating a night that truly befits royalty! Congratulations to all scholarship recipients. We eagerly anticipate the indelible mark you will make in the legal field. And to our generous donors, your investment in the future of Black lawyers is deeply appreciated. In Service! J.L.
