Turns To Coastline Equipment and John Deere to Keep Their Underground Dry Utility Work Going Strong in Los Angeles and Orange County Written By: Brian Hoover L auren and Edith Hunt first started Trenchers West Construction Co. back in 1970 after Lauren realized that he was in the wrong business. He was working as a carpenter and one day found himself building footing forms. He struck up a conversation with one of the backhoe operators and found that they were making $22 an hour compared to his humble $5 per 6

hour arrangement. The decision was simple, Lauren quit his job as soon as he could, purchased a backhoe and began working as an owner operator. The husband and wife team started out digging footings and other small hourly jobs until they were approached by a housing developer at a job and asked if they had any experience at excavating for electric utilities. assured the contractor that they were very familiar with this type of work and the man offered them an opportunity. What he didn’t know was that this was really their first job performing dry utilities. It all worked out great and Lauren and Edith have been doing more of the same for more than 40 years now. “The Bush administration and the 1990s allowed us to get

our equipment paid for and our business just took off from there and we have been doing great ever since,” says Lauren. “I mean things slowed down pretty good in 2008 and for a few years after, but we were in good shape and weathered that storm without any issues.”

Trenchers West Construction Co. has 49 fulltime employees, 44 of which are operators and laborers working in the field each day. The company still takes on those smaller jobs that helped them get to where they are today, as well as $1 million projects for developers like Shapell Industries dba S&S Homes, Standard Pacific Homes and Brookfield Homes to name a few. “We stay very busy working for a short list of very reputable home development companies,” says Hunt. “This keeps us occupied and appreciative that we don’t have

to travel outside of Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties.”

Trenchers West is currently on nine separate jobs at this time, one of the more interesting projects being for Toll Brothers out at Porter Ranch in the San Fernando Valley. Interestingly, Toll Brothers recently purchased the home-building business of Shapell Industries, a Beverly Hills firm. This purchase significantly boosts Toll Brothers’ land holdings within the California market. Shapell Industries Inc. developed the San Fernando Valley’s Porter Ranch, which is now being developed by Toll Brothers, along with a significant number of lots that came with the deal. “We are content to see the housing industry doing so well right now,” says Hunt.

“Most all of our work is for new housing tracts, digging trench for primarily dry utilities.”

Trenchers West is installing 12 vaults and a couple of miles of trench out on the Porter Ranch project. The job started the first week of April and Lauren and his crews will stay busy there for around eight weeks. They are also on other fairly large new home sites in Hemet, Riverside and smaller jobs throughout their work area. “We are happy to be as busy as we are right now, but coordinating the crews and equipment to keep it all going smoothly can be daunting at times,” says Hunt.

Lauren and Edith Hunt own and maintain a pretty good-sized fleet of equipment that includes 11 backhoes, three compact excavators and a wheel loader.

“All of our backhoes are John Deere, as is our wheel loader,” says Lauren. “We also have a John Deere compact excavator.”

Recently, the company purchased another brand new John Deere 410K Tier IV backhoe from their dealer of choice, Coastline Equipment. They purchased the new backhoe to help keep up with the backlog of work.

“I have owned other brands, but the John Deere machines are simply built better and stronger,” explains Hunt. “The metal does not fatigue and you don’t see the cracks in the iron that I have experienced with other brands. Our operators prefer the John Deere machines and we feel like we get more 8

productivity at the end of the day.”

Lauren and his wife, Edith have dealt with Coastline Equipment for as long as they can remember.

“We deal with Tony Knight and he and everyone at Coastline Equipment take care of us like we are their best customer,” says Hunt. “If something goes down, they are there for us immediately.

United Rock turns to HER to supplement their fleet and most recently has rented a Hyundai R480LC-9A Excavator, Hitachi ZX850 Excavator, Cat D10 and D8 Dozers, along with five Bell A35D Articulated Trucks for use in their dredging and dry mining operations. Russ Caruso has been with United Rock for more than six years now and serves as the company’s vice president. Russ spent 20 years of his career working in the aerospace manufacturing business and has successfully transferred many of the techniques used in this business to the at times antiquated aggregate industry. “The majority of our mining at United Rock is done through the use of dredges, but we also perform a fair amount of dry mining,” says Caruso. “When demand is up and the need for additional heavy equipment arises, we turn to companies like Heavy Equipment Rentals, LLC.” With around 20 percent growth over the past two years, United Rock has needed additional 12

Renting Heavy Equipment From Hawthorne Rent-It Service Helps Keep TAD Excavation, Inc. Competitive and Profitable In Today’s Fluctuating Construction Market Written By: Brian Hoover

L

ike many small to medium sized contractors, TAD Excavation supplements their equipment fleet with rentals in order to remain competitive in today’s continuingly fluctuating construction market. When renting, owner Todd Hanna knows that not all rental companies are created equal. “We have been renting from Hawthorne Rent-It Service since 2005. They have everything we need and fit perfectly into our service area, says Hanna.

Approximately 50 percent of TAD Excavation’s equipment needs are fulfilled through renting.

When Todd first started out, the idea of renting additional equipment was not something he concerned himself with. for another contractor doing demolition and grading work and this provided the perfect opportunity to start a business of

his own. Todd and his fatherin-law, Danny Green, went in as partners and purchased a dump truck and backhoe. “I was doing nothing but hourly owner operator backhoe work,” explains Hanna. “Within two years, we built our business to the point where we owned seven backhoes, but we were still only doing time and material work.”

As the market began to change and evolve, so did TAD Excavation.

Todd starting taking on more underground construction projects, making a name for himself as a turnkey company that could offer an entire package deal. “We could now go in and do the demo and then grade and excavate all of the wet and dry utilities,” says Hanna.

in a package solution has helped us build and keep many of the clients that we have today.”

TAD Excavation continues to offer turnkey solutions and works for several highly respected homebuilders and other subcontractors on everything from single-family custom home projects to large multi-unit apartment complexes. Currently, TAD has 15 employees, half of which are equipment operators.

Their fleet consists of around a dozen machines including a Cat 320 Excavator, Cat 930G Wheel Loader and a Cat 259 Compact Track Loader purchased from Hawthorne Cat. TAD Excavation is currently working a 500 linear foot sewer replacement project, where his crews are installing 18-inch pipe for a multi-unit complex. TAD is busy on several projects in downtown San Diego where they are doing all of the grading and site utility work, on both apartment complexes and custom homes. “We have a long list of loyal clients that use us exclusively and this is really the busiest we have been in quite some time,” says Hanna.

“What we have built here so far actually resembles a happy, healthy family. We just have an exceptional relationship with not only our clients, but also our employees and vendors.”

TAD is an acronym for Todd, Andrew (Todd’s 13 year old son) and Danny (Todd’s father-inlaw). Although Andrew is only 13, he already knows much of the ins-and-outs of his father’s business and as it appears now is most likely the future of TAD Excavation. Danny still maintains a small minority share in the business, but is no longer active in the day-to-day aspects of the www.calcontractor.com

business. “I owe a lot to Danny for getting me started and providing the initial business that sparked our growth,” says Hanna. “Now our sights are on starting a trucking division to handle our own needs, as well as outside business.

We are watching the market carefully and plan to be very careful not to overextend ourselves or be too anxious to grow too quickly. I am happy with what we have and look forward to what tomorrow brings.”

Written By: Brian Hoover It is the mission of the nonprofit Crime Prevention Program of Southern California(CPP) to prevent and/or significantly reduce the theft of all types of construction equipment and the vandalism of construction jobsites. Our primary objective in accomplishing crime prevention is done through educating our members on what steps they can take to prevent their companies from becoming a crime victim. CPP provides law enforcement agencies with educational materials, along with corporate security contacts which are vital in recovering stolen construction equipment.

CPP also provide signs and decals offering rewards to get as many people involved as possible in the recovery process. Contractors of all types and sizes are members and a long list of law enforcement agencies, along with special law enforcement task forces work closely with CPP. These agencies include but are not limited to: 18

FEAR - Border and Customs, ISU California Highway Patrol, OCATT - Orange County, RAID - Riverside County, CARGO CATS - Los Angeles County, BAD CATS - Los Angeles City – LAPD, SANCATT - San Bernardino County, SLO CATS Central Coast, TRAP - Los Angeles County and VEN CATS – Ventura.

Insurance firms may offer a reduction in premiums for their insured that join CPP. Manufacturers and dealer/distributors also work closely with CPP to protect the interest of both their clients and end-users. CPP posts stolen equipment in bulletins and notices and online to increase exposure and the chances for a speedy recovery. According to their website, CPP members with decals and/or properly marked or unique identified markings on their equipment have seen on average a 75% recovery rate. The state average recovery is about 40% and the national average is about 12 to 15%.

The process is simple. You first file a report with local law enforcement and then call Crime Prevention’s hotline at 800-432-7257 ext. 823. CPP will then immediately notify over 175 law enforcement agencies throughout California, Arizona and Nevada and follow up to assure that a proper report has been made. CPP will continue to assist you throughout your loss all the way to recovery or attaining your insurance claim.

The loss of equipment is just the beginning, as there are many hidden costs and losses that go along with these thefts.

Lost work time and productivity, higher premiums and deductible costs, hassle and lost time spent filing reports and of course the final cost of replacing that stolen machine. CPP offers an exclusive equipment identification system that greatly increases the recovery of stolen equipment. Gabe Marquez is the new incoming Director of the Crime Prevention Program and has been on the Board of Directors for the past 13 years. Mr. Marquez has also served as a Highway Patrol Investigator for the past 15 years.

“At CPP, we have the eyes and ears of law enforcement. Your stolen machine is not just another piece of paperwork stacked up on some overworked officers desk. We act as your liaison between the world of business and law enforcement,” says Marquez. “We dig deep and make calls to get the right people involved. When we see someone trying to sell a piece of known stolen equipment, we work with law enforcement to set up an undercover buy. There is just so much that we do that increases the chance of a contractors equipment being returned safe and sound.”

Case In Point Recently in Riverside, a couple of rolls of steel, a bobtail truck and some smaller equipment items were stolen. This was reported to the Crime Prevention Program of Southern California, who immediately reached out to California Highway Patrol Inland Empire Investigator, Karie Mendoza. Karie interviewed the victim to ascertain where the stolen items may have gone.

As a direct result of Officer Mendoza’s follow-through, a wheel loader that had been previously stolen from the victim several years back was recovered.

So although she was not able to locate the rolls of steel and other stolen items, the leads led her to individuals involved in a cold case theft against the same victim.

The over $50,000 recovery resulted in removing the bad mark on the victims insurance record, as well as a return in deductible.

But the story does not end here. In addition to the wheel loader recovery, Ms. Medoza also found another members' stolen equipment item. Sukut Construction had a vibratory rammer stolen several years back that was rented from United Rentals. Sukut of course paid for and replaced the stolen item and when it was found they at least had something to show for this payment and hopefully the person responsible will be prosecuted and do time for their offense. None of this would have been possible without the connection between the Crime Prevention Program and law enforcement.

Officer Karie Mendoza is on the board of directors for CPP and is a previous recipient of the John Hootman Memorial Award. This award is presented annually and is named after the late California Highway Patrol Investigator John D. Hootman of the Inland Division Investigations Services Unit. This award is meant to honor the memory of an officer who gave so much time, effort, enthusiasm and innovation towards helping 20

the construction industry prevent and resolve the theft of heavy equipment. “I really enjoy working on cases that involve the theft of heavy equipment. When I received the bulletin about the stolen rolls of steel and various equipment items from CPP, I immediately thought of a suspect that I and other officers have arrested over the years for the theft of construction equipment, among other charges, said Mendoza. “Upon investigation we did not find the items we were looking for, but did find other stolen equipment items both for the victim of the case I was working on and for eight other victims of older cases. The Crime Prevention Program of Southern California definitely works by getting so many different agencies involved which dramatically increases the exposure of each stolen piece of equipment.”

EQUIPMENT SHOWDOWN: EQUIPMENT COMBO VS. INTEGRATED BACKHOE One could say it’s better to own a skid steer loader and a compact excavator rather than a tractor loader/backhoe alone. Another could say the opposite, arguing you only need a backhoe since it can do the work of a skid steer and compact excavator. Both are correct. The choice depends on more than just the machines themselves, requiring a closer look at application, business type, employee skills and operating capacities.

Skid steer/compact excavator combo advantages There are distinct advantages to owning a skid steer/compact excavator mix versus owning only a backhoe. They are: • Fuel efficiency: Skid steers and compact excavators are small machines with smaller engines than those powering backhoes.

• Maintenance and repair flexibility: The benefit of owning a skid steer and compact excavator can provide flexibility in terms of timing the work that needs to be done on the machines between work cycles.

Determining whether it costs more for maintenance over the life of the equipment for one scenario versus the other requires a detailed analysis given that the outcome is clearly driven by the equipment application.

• Equipment application and crew: Is there a greater need to run two machines at once versus having a single high-capacity machine on the job? Are you a solo act without other equipment operators to run two machines simultaneously? Do the jobs involve tight spaces where the small footprint of a skid steer or compact excavator outweighs the higher capacity of a backhoe?

• Transportability: It would seem easier and less costly to get a skid steer and compact excavator to a jobsite versus a backhoe given the need for a sizeable trailer and commercial driver’s license when hauling a backhoe.

However, that’s not true if the goal is to haul both the skid steer and compact excavator to the site on one trailer, because it comes with the same requirements as hauling the backhoe.

Understanding the requirements for transportability will help drive the decision. Cc

TIER 4 REGULATIONS DRIVE INNOVATION BEYOND MEETING It’s easy to lump the entire Tier 4 conversation into two technological buckets: selective catalytic reduction, or SCR, and Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation, or CEGR. These are the two technologies – with some variation – that are helping equipment manufacturers achieve mandated emissions standards.

Better Fuel Efficiency Through Electronics and Engine Evolutions Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final solutions have forced engine manufacturers to focus more on efficiency, and one way has been through the marriage of advanced electronics and fuel injection methods/designs. At its most basic level, emissions are made up of leftovers from the combustion process.

More Consistent and Reliable Turbo Power Another example of the marriage of electronics and engine technology is the improvement of turbocharger performance through the implementation of a boost pressure modulator valve, commonly found on small- to medium-size Tier 4 engines.

SCR and Wheel Loaders Provide Faster Throttle Response, Improved Torque Evolutions in Tier 4 treatment has also lead to significant advancements in productivity.

Not Just for Big Equipment: Taking Skid Steers to the Next Level In the past, cost, size and simplicity made it impractical to go to an electronic engine control on a skid steer. As Tier 4 pushed engineers to find new ways to meet standards, electronic engine control became a viable option for skid steers and has allowed for significant advances, including the addition of HPCR and better control over the speed and power output of the engine. It has also allowed for more sensor inputs within the machine, which provides better machine management, more informed operation and better troubleshooting of machine issues.

Engineering a Better Machine While Tier 4 mandates represent a line in the sand, we know that “reduced emissions” is not a productivity or performance factor that improves your bottom line.

Cindy Trump Inc. “dba” Lindy’s Cold Planing is a General Engineering Contractor that has specialized in asphalt grinding since 1987. They offer everything from ½ lane milling and mid-size grinders to mini grinding machines and perform cuts from 4 feet to 7 foot 3 inches in width. From highways to parking lots, Lindy’s does it all.
