T

he forum was constructed in Inglewood back in 1967 by Jack Kent Cooke, then-owner of the Lakers and founding owner of the Kings. The structure was originally designed by Los Angeles architect Charles Luckman and built at a cost of $16 million. It has always been appreciated for its intimate atmosphere with no seat more than 170 feet from the playing surface. The 18,000 seat arena hosted basketball and ice hockey for many years,

as well as being used for rehearsals and concerts from some of the music industry’s most popular performers including: Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Queen, U2, Prince, Sting, Cream, Aerosmith, Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, The Jackson 5, The Osmonds, Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross, Jethro Tull, John Denver, Kiss, Bee Gees, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson, Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Billy Squier, Fleetwood Mac, Bryan Adams, Jackson Browne,

Much of the Forum’s success came from the Lakers and Kings games held there and the celebrities that were often sighted at the games. Tennis and boxing matches were also held at the Forum, in addition to political events. In 2010, the Forum was acquired by the Faithful Central Bible Church,

who later sold to The Madison Square Garden Company (MSG) for $23.5 million. Soon after the sale, MSG announced plans to renovate the arena for use as a “world-class” concert venue. The Forum officially reopened in January 2014 with six concerts performed by the Eagles, who had last performed there back in October 1976.

Flying over the newly renovated arena, one could take in the giant 400 ft. wide mock Eagles “Hotel California” record actually spinning at 17 mph. MSG reportedly spent

nearly $100 million on the renovation of the “Fabulous Forum” as it became known as back in its hey day. It has officially been renamed “The Forum Presented by Chase.”

Clark Construction headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland with California offices in San Diego, Costa Mesa and San Francisco was chosen as the prime contractor on the Forum Renovation project. Clark was able to complete the demanding renovation in just seven short months. Work

included selective demolition, replacement of each stair riser in the seating bowl, added ADA compliance to the entire facility, as well as upgrading all of the building’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. It was also necessary to renovate much of the structural and non-structural walls and ceilings throughout the arena. Perhaps the largest and most extensive component of the renovation included the repair and added structural integrity to the existing cable roof truss system.

Two hundred thirty tons of steel reinforcement was added to the roof in order to support new state-of-the-art lighting and rigging equipment. They were also tasked with installing additional supplemental support framing beneath the seating areas, which had to be done by hand.

To help accomplish this major undertaking, Bragg Crane & Rigging was brought in to focus on retrofitting the roof and ceiling with the installation of a new compression ring and a complete retrofit to the existing radial truss system.

Luke Lemoine was the Project Manager for Bragg on this

project. “The entire roof system at the Forum was designed around a tension ring located in the ceiling and used to reduce gravitational forces,” says Lemoine. “We went in and removed and replaced the existing tie-rod bracing with new angle bracing in 14 of the radial truss lines and tied the angle bracing into a new compression ring located above the existing tension ring in order to reduce compression forces within the roof system.”

The lift plan associated with the new compression ring was perhaps one of the most difficult components for Bragg Crane & Rigging. “The compression ring

came out in two pieces and we had to set it up and full-pen weld it together on-site,” says Lemoine. “Once we layed it on top of the jacks, we noticed that we were a bit too short and we then brought in Bragg Crane Service for their assistance.”

Bragg Crane Service began taking measurements so that they could precisely lift the compression ring up inside of the tension ring and then jack it into place in order to receive the new angle bracing and complete the compression system. “We had to do all of this with only about a foot of head room and around 2 feet of space on each side,” says Lemoine.

Bragg Crane & Rigging was given three months to complete a scope of work that would normally take six to nine months to complete. They were able to accomplish their contract inside of the three month accelerated schedule by working two 10-hour shifts with 25 to 35 individuals per shift. “When you consider that there were 25 plus of us, as well as all of the other trades working at once, in retrospect it was quite an accomplishment,” says Lemoine. “There were concrete trucks moving in and out and framers, plumbers, electricians and dozens of other contractors on site. It was really quite the dance.”

Bragg Crane & Rigging utilized several specialized cranes on the Forum project including an 850-ton Power Tower gantry system that had to be transported, unloaded and setup in pieces. “We unloaded the jacks outside with our 90-ton Link-Belt and after tripping them outside, we carried them into the building with a 36,000 lb. forklift,” says Lemoine. “The track and other supplemental pieces were driven in on semi-trucks and off-loaded inside the building.”

The main lift crane on the project was Bragg’s Link Belt HTC 3140LB and this was used to lift the compression ring into place. A Link-Belt 8690 was used to lift steel, help setup the gantry system and basically move heavy items around.

The smallest and most mobile crane utilized was the Tadano TR150XL 15-ton crane. The heaviest lift, at just under 15

onstruction was completed on the first segment of the Metro Gold Line back in 2003. This 13.7 mile segment includes 13 stations and connects the cities of Los Angeles, South Pasadena and Pasadena. The Eastside Extension of the Gold Line was then added in 2009, adding eight stations between Union Station and East Los Angeles.

The success of the Metro Gold Line led to the San Gabriel Valley pursuing an extension that further connects the Gold Line east along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. Referred to as the Foothill Extension, the project has been split into three phases including the Foothill Extension from Pasadena to

Azusa, Foothill Extension from Azusa to Montclair and Ontario Airport Extension.

With the passage of Measure R, Metro has allocated $735 million toward construction of the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension. The Phase 2A project will extend the Gold Line from Pasadena and move on east to Azusa. This phase will add an additional six stations, at a length of 11.3 miles. Phase 2B will extend the Gold Line corridor from Azusa to Montclair. This 12.6-mile section will also have six stations and is projected for completion sometime between 2017 and 2019. Phase 2C proposes to continue the Gold Line from

Montclair on into the Ontario International Airport.

In April 2012, joint venture contractor Kiewit Parsons was issued a Full Notice To Proceed (NTP) on the Gold Line Foothill Extension Project. They officially began work in mid-2012 with the replacement of the railroad bridge over the Foothill Freeway in Arcadia. During March and April 2013, the concrete supports for the Colorado St. Bridge located west of Santa Anita Avenue were being constructed.

construction over Santa Anita Avenue. Although it will be several years before the Gold Line Foothill Extension will be fully completed, it is projected to be operational by November 2016.

Kiewit Parsons will have numerous subcontractors working on the Gold Line Foothill Extension Project.

Dan Nunley is a Project Manager for Anglemyer Crane Rental and his company has worked for a long time, attempting to become a Kiewit approved subcontractor. “We were put through a rigorous prequalification period and before we could even be considered it was necessary that we have a stellar safety record,” says Nunley. “They visited our facility and looked over our equipment, interviewed

every member of our management team and examined our safety programs.

We are very happy and proud to be one of the select few that qualified as a crane subcontractor for their company.”

Since that time, Anglemyer Crane Rental has worked intermittently on phases currently in progress.

They had a Link-Belt ATC-3275 all-terrain 275-ton crane working for around eight weeks setting forms for bridges off Foothill Avenue. They also sent out their Linkbelt HTC-8690 truck crane to various locations to set steel and forms. Anglemyer’s 350-ton crane was also utilized setting iron and beams for bridge erection on the Foothill Project.

“We have been working on and off at the Foothill Extension Project for more than 9 months now,” explains Nunley. “ When you work for a large contractor, they generally have a pretty impressive fleet of equipment.

We are happy to work for them on an as needed basis, the longest being 3 months straight placing forms and setting rebar.”

It is necessary for Anglemyer to be at the top of their game at all times. “I have an entire book on my desk covering crane safety

alone for this project and to complicate things even more, we are also working with rail road certifications,” says Nunley.

Everyone must be outfitted with gloves, safety glasses, vests and it is required that every lift have a prepick plan. All of the rigging has to be qualified by Kiewit and that means no nylons or synthetics.”

Anglemyer Crane Rental is used to stringent safety standards and planning each job down to the smallest detail.

“It is always a challenge getting our massive cranes into spaces that are less than adequate.

The most important factor is to use the right crane for the right application and remain under 85 percent capacity,” says Nunley. “Our wide variety of cranes and personnel allows us

n the 1880s much of California’s oil production was located in Ventura County with discoveries at Sulphur Mountain, Rancho Ojai, Rancho Sespe and Rancho Santa Paula. It is said that the State’s first “gusher” occurred in Adams Canyon near Santa Paula in 1888, producing an estimated 1,500 barrels of oil a day. The Ventura Oil Field was first discovered in 1919 and as the seventh-largest oil field still in production in California, it produces around one billion barrels of oil a year.

The oil industry in Ventura County brought about tremendous population growth, new industries and plenty of jobs. One of those niche industries included companies that could lift and set the heavy oil rigs, pipe and operating equipment into place. We could not justify purchasing a 23 ton, when we already have two 20 tons,” says Ballesteros. “The Manitex 30-ton is right around the same size and weight as the 20-ton, but offered that additional tonnage and further pick that we are more in need of these days.”

Ventura Crane has several other cranes and boom trucks in their fleet including a 40-ton and two 20-ton units. “The Manitex from Coastline brought us further into carb compliance, but beyond that, we really wanted to try out a Kenworth chassis,” says Ballesteros. “We were previously a Peterbilt only company and we were hearing that Kenworth was the way to go.”

Knowing that Coastline deals with Kenworth, George checked out the new Manitex. “We got a lot of truck, for a great price. Down to the Neway off road and high center of gravity air ride suspension Kenworth offers,” says Ballesteros. “I am the operator for this new Manitex 30-ton and I am really impressed with the compact size and 51 ft. telescopic boom. This unit just allows us to do so much more in the oilfields and other jobs that require more reach.”

For George Ballesteros, every day is an adventure and according to him he is never bored. “You never know what you are going to get into each day when you arrive out on the jobsite,” says George.

INTERSTATE 215 PROJECT BOOSTS KEY INLAND EMPIRE TRANSPORTATION CORRIDOR Caltrans today announced the completion of a “major overhaul” of Interstate 215, which includes 15 new bridges, four new lanes, two flyovers and the reconstruction of 34 ramps along the 7.5 mile route.

The project included construction of new general use and carpool lanes in both directions of I-215 from I-10 to SR-210 and an auxiliary lane from SR-210 to just south of University Parkway. Connector ramps between I-215 and SR-210 were also added to improve mobility between freeways. Crews also built 15 new bridges and two flyovers and reconstructed 34 ramps.

Artistic wallscapes that reflect the San Bernardino Mountains, the region’s railroad history, and natural springs have also been added along the roadway.

The project was funded through a combination of $128 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds, $117 million in State Proposition

IB funds, and local Measure I funds —the voter-approved half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements in San Bernardino County.

This four-phase project was a close partnership between SANBAG (San Bernardino Associated Governments), Caltrans, the city of San Bernardino, and the Federal Highway Administration. The seven-year, $647 million project will reduce travel times and increase safety along one of the region’s major transit corridors.

This project also created or supported thousands of jobs in the San Bernardino area.

“SANBAG and Caltrans are proud to unveil this beautiful finished freeway to the public today,” stated SANBAG President Bill Jahn. “It represents fifteen years of planning and design, plus seven long years of construction that occurred while heavy freeway traffic continued to flow. We witnessed an amazing

engineering and construction feat, as we watched this giant puzzle assembled, piece-by-piece, during these years. We now have one of the nation’s most elaborate, efficient, and safe freeway systems passing through the heart of San Bernardino County.”

This major expansion and revitalization project will increase traffic flow, eliminate fast-lane entrances and exits, and aid traffic merging with the added auxiliary lane, which enhances access to both the east and west sides of San Bernardino on this major goods movement corridor between the Victor Valley, Riverside County, Orange County, and Los Angeles County. Other added benefits of the project include improved air quality and noise reduction.

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON NEW PROJECT TO CUT CONGESTION AT U.S. HIGHWAY 101/STATE ROUTE 23 INTERCHANGE Long-awaited improvements are now underway at the heavily-used U.S. Highway 101/ State Route 23 interchange in Thousand Oaks that will ease traffic congestion and improve safety for more than 170,000 motorists who travel through the area daily.

The project will add one new lane in each direction to U.S. 101 between the Los Angeles/Ventura County line and Moorpark Road, a distance of about four miles.

It will also build a new lane on ramps connecting 101 and SR-23; widen bridges at Hampshire Road, Conejo School Road, and Moorpark Road; realign the Moorpark Road ramps; and construct soundwalls and retaining walls throughout the project limits.

Caltrans, the Ventura County Transportation Commission, and Thousand Oaks are partners on the $43 million project, which is scheduled to be completed by the

LINK-BELT TO UNVEIL TCC-500 AT CONEXPO 201400 AT CONEXPO Link-Belt will unveil its all-new 50-ton (51-mt) TCC-500 telescopic crawler crane at ConExpo, March 4-8, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Boom Up The TCC-500 offers an impressive capacity chart that rivals even lattice crawler cranes with a similar base rating. Foursection, full-power boom on the TCC-500 is 35 ft 6 in -110 ft (10.8 – 33.8m) in length with box type construction of high tensile steel consisting of one base section and three telescoping sections.

The vertical side plates of the boom have diamond-shaped steel impressions for strength to weight ratio. Fly options include a 28.5 – 51 ft. two piece bi-fold lattice fly, stowable, offsettable to 2, 20 and 40 degrees; maximum tip height is 165.5 ft.

Smooth Move Of course, being a Link-Belt, the TCC-500 moves quickly and easily on or off the job site.

With a standard counterweight package of 25,000 lbs, the TCC500 transports in just one load while staying under 100,000 lbs in most cases. On the trailer, the TCC-500 travels at a height of 9 ft 10.55 in and a width of 11 ft 5.24 in.

For flexibility on the jobsite, a hydraulic cylinder mounted in the lower frame can hydraulically extend and retract all welded, precision machined, steel frames. The TCC-500 can work at three different track widths: 15 ft 2.37 in fully extended, 13 ft 6.11 in intermediate, and 11 ft 5.24 in retracted. It has two travel

speeds and can travel up to 2 miles per hour to spend less time traveling and more time lifting.

Power to perform A Tier IV final Cummins QSL engine powers the TCC-500, producing 215 hp (160.3 kW) and driving a variable displacement piston pump package. Simple and dependable hydraulic pilot-operated control valves distribute flow to all functions. Tried and tested Link-Belt hoist packages using piston motors and 5/8 inch rope handle the flow of the crane.

The winches have 17,084 lbs of line pull and a maximum line speed of 549 feet per minute.

JOHN DEERE UPDATES MOTOR GRADERS TO MEET FINAL TIER 4 EMISSION STANDARDS John Deere’s best-selling G-Series Motor Graders now meet Final Tier 4 emissions standards with the implementation of a John Deere PowerTech™ EPA Final Tier 4/EU Stage IV engine. The engine update also allowed engineers to implement several customer-inspired ideas to better meet the needs of today’s operator.

The G-Series still boasts 12 models (670G/GP, 672G/GP, 770G/GP, 772G/GP, 870G/GP, 872G/GP) with net horsepower ranging from 220 to 287. Six of the units (those models ending in two: i.e. 872G) feature six-wheel drive, enabling them to power through the toughest cuts with power flowing to all wheels.

Six-wheel drive gives operators increased traction, the ability to get more work done in fewer

blading passes and a 30-percent increase in blade pull.

VOLVO CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT SET TO ACQUIRE HAULER BUSINESS FROM TEREX In a move that will improve the company’s penetration in the core earthmoving segment and extend its presence in light mining, Volvo Construction Equipment has agreed to acquire the off-highway hauler business of the Terex Corporation for a purchase consideration of approx. USD 160 M (approx. SEK 1 billion) on a cash and debt free basis.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has announced that it has agreed with the Terex Corporation to acquire the hauler manufacturer Terex Equipment Ltd, including related assets and intellectual property.

The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, includes the main production facility in Motherwell, Scotland and two product ranges that offer both rigid and articulated haulers. It also includes the distribution of haulers in the U.S. as well as a 25.2% holding in Inner Mongolia North Hauler Joint Stock Co (NHL), which manufactures and sells rigid haulers under the Terex brand in China. NHL is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

The acquisition includes five models of rigid haulers, with proven designs and payloads ranging from 32 to 91 tons. The introduction of rigid haulers will extend Volvo CE’s position in light mining; an industry area that is complementary to general construction, oil & gas, aggregates & quarrying and road building – segments that Volvo CE is already active in.

The deal also sees a further three models of articulated hauler added to the Volvo portfolio, with payloads ranging from 25 to 38 tons.

These machines support Volvo CE’s already established position in the articulated hauler segment, offer an extensive field population and opportunities for considerable growth in emerging economies.

If approved, the acquisition adds some 500 employees to Volvo CE’s existing workforce.

It also allows for the continued use of the Terex brand name on the relevant machines for a transitional period.

The transaction is expected to be finalized during the second quarter of 2014. For implementation, approval is required from relevant authorities. Cc

This also keeps costs down and certainly helps in the bidding process.”
