C

rane Rental Service has one of the most diversified fleets in the Southern California with units ranging from 30-ton boom trucks and 50 to 90-ton rough terrain cranes, all the way to 40-140-ton hydraulic cranes and 240-ton to 450-ton all-terrain cranes. Crane Rental Service is owned and operated by the Foster Family, and Carl Johnson has been serving as the general manager for 5 years. “We have been in an expansion mode lately and have expanded our fleet and added several new cranes,” says Johnson. “We have also 6

diversified our revenue stream into some new areas where we have been pursuing more long-term contract jobs as opposed to taxi crane work.”

According to Johnson, a part of this recent expansion has included the addition of two new Terex T 340XL 40-ton truck-mounted telescopic boom cranes, a Link- Belt RTC-8090 Series II 90-ton rough terrain crane, and a Grove GMK6300L all-terrain crane. “We noted that we were subbing out more jobs than we wanted when we were busy, and that is always a good measurement

of when it is time to buy new cranes,” continues Johnson. “We go with Terex for our smaller cranes, Link-Belt for our midrange cranes and Grove/Manitowoc for our larger cranes. We are primarily a Link-Belt and Grove shop, which allows us to take advantage of our integrated interchangeable parts inventory.”

Like many other successful companies, Crane Rental Service pays attention to economic trends and future opportunities. “Part of our revenue stream and diversification plan is to recognize and seek out new areas of growth C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

and development. As a result, we are currently taking on more maintenance jobs as opposed to new construction, with a focus on longer-term projects,” says Johnson.

“This includes contract and civil work on freeway and roadbuilding jobs with a focus on widenings and bridge girder work.”

LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is in the midst of a multibillion-dollar modernization program, and Crane Rental Service has provided a long list of cranes

for a variety of projects. They had a significant presence on the LAX Tom Bradley International Terminal Expansion Project and specifically the Midway Satellite Terminal, where their cranes and operators are assisting in the construction of Jetway Boulevard and the Automated People Mover (APM) Project. The APM is an electric train system that will travel on a 2.25 mile and serve six stations on both the inside and outside of the Central Terminal Area (CTA). LAX broke ground on the project in March 2019 with anticipations that major construction will be completed

in mid-2022 and open for service in 2023. “We are working on both building and infrastructure projects at LAX and have been out there for the last two and a half years,” says Johnson. “We have supplied everything from a 40-ton truck crane to 450-ton all-terrain cranes, with several 90-ton RT cranes on-site for a couple of years now. Our work out at LAX has fluxuated from providing a single crane to multiple cranes being used in a variety of capacities, and this is the type of work that fits right into our new long-term jobsite business plan.”

Crane Rental Service has also remained very busy out on the Consolidated Rental Car Facility (ConRAC) Project that will soon be accessible from the Automated People Mover. ConRAC is one of the most high-profile components of LAX’s Landslide Access Modernization Program (LAMP).

The new rental car facility will consolidate rental care operations currently spread throughout LAX into one convenient location adjacent to the 405 freeway. “This job broke ground in January, and we will be on-site for the next two to three years with 90-ton RT cranes and 350-ton all-terrain cranes,” says Johnson.

OTHER LONG TERM AND TURNAROUND PROJECTS Crane Rental Service is well-known for their daily and weekly rental services, and they will continue to lead in that niche.

However, the real growth is coming in the way of more longterm projects like the Western Waste Transfer Station Project that they will have been on for around 12 months by jobs end.

“This is a great structural steel project where we had a 275-ton and a 240-ton crane working in tandem on at one point, along with a 110-ton crane and a 90-ton RT as well,” continues Johnson.

“We stay busy because we serve so many different industries, including power plants, where we will be starting several turnaround projects very soon.” Johnson points out another ongoing project that Crane Rental Service has been on with multiple cranes. “We were on the Grand Avenue Parcel Q Project and we be provided one to two support cranes at any given time,” says Johnson. This is a 39-story multifamily tower project with a 20-story Equinox hotel and a public plaza that will sit atop a six-level parking garage.

Crane Rental Service currently has around 35 to 50 operators and oilers that are each a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 12 and Local 428. Every operator is NCCCO, and OECP certified with many years of experience in all types of crane work, including general hoisting, freeway and bridgework, trucking, refinery work, high-rise construction and machinery moving. “As we begin our 54th year in business, we continue to be bullish on the Southern California economy and 10

see it remaining steady in the foreseeable future and even as far out as the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles,” says Johnson. “Our goal is to continue to increase our utilization within our existing fleet.

We had around 14% growth in 2018, but only around three to 3% in 2019. We see 2020 being fairly flat as far as growth is concerned, but still maintaining the very brisk pace, we have witnessed these past several years.” Johnson says that he just recently got back from an economic summit in Costa Mesa and points out that it is the forecaster’s opinion

that the upcoming presidential election will have a lot to do with our immediate economic future.

oundation Constructors, Inc. was founded in 1971 by Fred Cavin and partners, Ray Rose, Joe Hilton and Barney Murdock. John Honaker is the Vice President of construction for the entire state of California and he has been with Foundation for 15 years. “The pile driving trade requires heavy equipment that can standup to the daily rigors of our continuous, and aggressive work environment,” says Honaker. We use cranes and excavators equipped with special piling attachments to perform pile driving and auger cast pile duties.

We need cranes and equipment that we can depend on and an equipment distributor who can be there for us at a moment’s notice.”

Foundation Constructors and Foundation Pile collectively own and maintain a fleet of 40 pieces of heavy equipment, including multiple cranes and a hydraulic excavator. “Our drill rigs are Woltman PVE 90s, along with a variety of sizes of Fundex machines. Our cranes are primarily Link-Belt and Manitowoc, and we just recently added a Tadano GTC-800 80 metric ton tele-boom crawler crane to our fleet,” says Honaker. “We were renting the Tadano from Coastline Equipment and almost immediately moved it into a rental/purchase and decided to buy it. David Demichei contacted us and let us know that Coastline was handling the Tadano/Mantis cranes and so we started out

by renting a Tadano GTC-600 and GTC-800.”

Honaker explains that the main benefit of owning the Tadano GTC-800 is that it is a hydraulic rig and that means it comes preassembled with tracks and boom. “There is no real erection time involved with the Tadano, other than the counterweights that we install in 30 to 40 minutes,” continues Honaker.

“Typically crane rental companies do not like or allow their customers to drive pile with rough terrain cranes and other hydraulic rigs. The 88-ton Tadano is advertised as a pile driving crane and that is the beauty of this machine. It is built to drive piles. We have driven pile with diesel hammers and have pulled and driven sheets with no issues whatsoever.

It is everything they claim it to be.”

Foundation Constructors has utilized their new Tadano GTC-800 in San Francisco to drive sheet pile at the Soma Hotel project. “The Tadano has plenty of boom length where I can set or splice pile. We typically pile drive with one rig and set additional pieces with the Tadano crane. We have had it for nine months now and it is just such a versatile crane. This machine has never had an idle moment and I have never seen it in our yard,” says Honaker. “We plan on purchasing more Tadano cranes because they fit right in with our niche market. They are built for pile driving and they are definitely our crane of choice when it comes to hydraulic rigs.”

Foundation Constructors also recently used their GTC-800 on the Highway 4 bridge widening project to install all of the bed pile at the 680-freeway intersection for Brosamer & Wall. “We also were recently awarded the pile driving contract for the Mission Rock project in San Francisco. This is for four separate buildings and some of the longest pile ever driven in San Francisco,” continues Honaker.

“We are driving around 1,300 piles around 250 feet deep. We are doing test piling right now and should be in full production by the end of June.”

Better Built Truss Company Utilizes Boom Trucks and Swing Cab Cranes to Off-load and Place Their Wooden Roof and Floor Trusses

D

urabilt Truss started in 1964, and by the early 2000s, the company had tripled in size, enabling the owners to sell to Universal Forest Products in 2006. The housing and general building industry was booming in 2006, but the housing industry crashed by 2008, prompting the company to close its Riverbank plant in 2010. Shuttering the business meant that 37 hardworking, long-term employees were about to become a statistic, and that did not sit well with anyone, including general manager, Jeff Qualle.

Jeff happened to mention the sad predicament to his longtime friend, Dave Sanders, who worked with Jeff to arrange the purchase of the assets and then moved the company to Ripon. With a change of name and location, the new entity, Better Built Truss Company (BBT), was formed in 2010 and began to thrive once again with 60 fulltime team members and a great location just off Highway 99 in Ripon. Today, the company 14

fluctuates between 125 to 150 employees, depending on the time of year.

Alan Kosky has been the plant manager at Better Built Truss since 2012. He worked for the company under the previous name in the 90s through 2008 and has been in the truss industry for more than 20 years. “At BBT, we serve an approximate 100-mile radius, with the majority of our business located in the greater Sacramento area, and over the hill and on into the greater bay area,” says Kosky. “We manufacture wooden roof and floor trusses primarily for developers and framing contractors in the commercial, residential, custom and light industrial niches.” Kosky points out that their clients either pay for and manage the installation of the trusses themselves or pay BBT for craning services to erect floor and wall panels. “We use the latest technology and equipment to manufacture our products. This includes MiTek Industries’ software systems for

their plate manufacturing and software operating systems,” says Kosky. “It also includes the best crane and high reach machinery available. We primarily use boom trucks and swing cab cranes from a few trusted manufacturers and distributors.”

According to Kosky, cranes are an integral part of their delivery system, and in Northern California, their contracts require plate line delivery. “Most of our support boom trucks consist of Peterbilt trucks with a fixed boom attached.

We currently own seven boom trucks and two swing cab cranes, including a Manitex 2281T 22-ton capacity boom truck with 81 feet of boom, and a Manitex 40124 40-ton capacity swing cab crane with 124 feet of boom.

We purchased both of these crane trucks from Coastline Equipment Crane Division out of Sacramento.”

Kosky and BBT purchased the Manitex 2281T boom truck in 2015 and the Manitex 40124 swing cab crane in 2019. “Both cranes have a specific job to do, with the boom trucks taking on residential jobs and projects that require 81 feet of reach or less. The Manitex 40124 swing cab crane comes into play when greater reach capacity and higher reach capacity is required,” continues Kosky. “The Manitex 40124 is a high-speed machine, and it exceeded our older cranes in weight capacity.

It is an extremely reliable boom truck, and we are thrilled with the service and support we are receiving from Coastline.” Kosky goes on to say that the swing cab crane trucks are typically used for multifamily structures with several levels that need more boom capacity. “You don’t have quite the flexibility with the swing cab cranes, and you cannot tow cargo behind like you can with the boom trucks, but when we need greater capacity, they are irreplaceable.”

BBT has two additional boom trucks on a lease-purchase option from Coastline. “We find that we don’t lose much with the lease/purchase option, and it gives us the flexibility in the event there is a downturn in the market,” says Kosky. “Dave Demichei is our representative from Coastline, and we had a relationship with him from years back when he worked for another crane company. He made a move to Coastline and reached out to us, and we are glad he did. Coastline has been very flexible and responsive to our needs, and we appreciate their customer service-oriented approach.”

BBT deals directly with a long list of national builders, as well as local framing contractors.

Leon Zermeno started the company in 1947 with one bobtail truck hauling drilling mud for the local oil companies. Steve Stansbury manages OST’s Bakersfield location. This location serves the areas oil fields, construction jobs, refineries, wind farms, and a variety of local agencies and commercial businesses. Every day brings a different list of jobs where they may be moving drill rigs one day and setting modular buildings the next. Every project is different requiring the use of cranes, boom trucks, and/or forklifts daily.

OST likes these particular boom truck cranes because they are larger than the smaller tonnage cranes that other manufacturers offer. At 30-ton capacity and a 51’ proportional boom. They are reliable and popular cranes within the industry.

rian and Diane Smith started Crainco, Inc. a little over 30 years ago from their home in La Mirada. It all started with just two small Dyna-Lift sign cranes in 1990 that they used to primarily lift A/C units, signs, motors, light poles and such objects. Diane Smith remembers that their very first job was to lift the main beam of their

church into place. “An earthquake damaged the church, and our pastor heard that we had just started our crane business,” says Smith. “We were more than happy to help and lift the large beam into place for our new church.” After a little more than two years of hard work and sacrifice, the Smiths

were able to generate enough business to justify a move to their first office space in Santa Fe Springs.

is the workplace safety law now requires that every heavy lift company must now have a qualified signal person and a qualified rigger.

Another key to Crainco’s success is that every employee also serves as a salesperson.

“When we first established the business, one of the founding philosophies and was to pay commission to operators. Our operators are our most valuable salespeople,” says Smith. “They are out in the field amongst all of the various trades, and they interact with the decision-makers.

It makes sense that they should be empowered to help meet our customer’s needs out on the job site.”

Over the years, Crainco has been called on to provide skilled operators and equipment for a wide variety of projects. They work for the U.S. Forestry Service, major Hollywood movie studios, theme parks, airports, presidential libraries, hospitals and medical facilities, and on many other specialty rigging projects. One of

the more interesting and recent projects involved a waterway system that needed to be packed and shipped to Hawaii. “We received a bulk shipment of 20” pipe at our Santa Fe Springs yard where we assisted a professional packing crew in the shipping and crating process for a safe and expedient trip to Hawaii,” says Smith. “We are also currently providing a Marriott Hotel with long-term storage while their site is being prepared. We will then truck the equipment to the site at a later date and then provide the scissor lifts and cranes to hoist the various units to their forever homes.”

After being in the business for 45 years, running a company for over 30 and meeting people in the industry through trade shows, events and job sites, Brian and Diane say their success has humbled them. “Along with our

successes, we feel compelled to give back. We have been able to give and serve with a few organizations over the years; Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, OC United, Royal Family Kids, to name a few,” continues Smith. “We want to thank all of our employees for working so hard with us over the years. We truly appreciate their dedication. We also want to thank customers, some who have partnered with us since we opened

Their patronage has been truly a blessing for our company and the families it supports.”

Volvo Construction Equipment & Services (VCES) just wrapped up an enjoyable and entertaining event at their Gold Rush Day in Corona. The event was held Saturday, Jan. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and featured the Special Edition Volvo EC200EL Excavator currenting touring the country at select Volvo dealerships.

Attendees were able to meet Juan Ibarra from Discovery’s Gold Rush, while listening to great classic rock tunes provided by 96.7 KCAL radio personalities.

VCES provided food tickets to registered attendees for use with a variety of food trucks and other food vendors. There was also plenty of exciting and fun things to do for the smallest of Volvo supporters, including face painting, jumpy houses and even a pan for gold exhibit provided

by Tom’s Farm. Everyone had a chance to walk away with prizes from KCAL, along with other VCES giveaways and raffles.

Volvo’s full line of equipment was also on display for everyone to see, but the real draw was that 28
