After serving his country for four years in the Navy, Bob Turner has worked in the construction business his entire adult life. In 1972, he joined the Operating Engineer’s Local 12 Apprenticeship Program, where he learned to operate a wide range of heavy equipment from dozers to cranes. Bob spent his first five years in the

business operating cranes and equipment for a bridge building contractor, before going to work for Ed’s Crane Service for another six years. Then in 1983, Bob Turner founded Bob’s Crane Service as an owner/ operator when he purchased a used Bucyrus Erie 12-ton crane. This was a tremendous risk at that time in Bob’s career

and as fate would have it, the very day he signed the papers for that first crane, he found work on the Interstate 8 and 67 interchange; a job which lasted nearly a year and a half. Bob comments, “I was fortunate to land a long-term first job when I went out on my own. After this initial job, I spent most of my time out on freeway jobs or

moving palm trees. I formed a sort of partnership with another individual and I would work my crane as an owner operator in the daytime and then move palm trees until around 10-o’clock at night. As the freeway type work began to dry up, I started growing and wholesaling trees and this went on for seven or eight years. Eventually we ended our partnership, but we both ended up with a nice inventory of palm trees. I still move trees today and continue to sell them from our inventory of over 300 trees at Bob’s Tree Farm.”

While the beginning of the 90’s saw a downturn in construction and the closure of several crane companies, it was the beginning of an upturn for Bob’s Crane Service. Bob’s company was small and did not have the large inventory that the other companies had, and he was able to weather the tough times. In fact, he was

able to purchase several used cranes at auctions as other companies were going through transitions. Bob continued to work as an owner/operator until 1992, when he incorporated his company as Bob Turner’s Crane Service, Inc. There were (3) other crane companies in the San Diego area at that time, and they all decided to cease operations due to lack of work.

This created somewhat of a void in the industry that only Bob’s Crane was able to fill at the time. Bob comments, “I began to rent cranes from one of the companies that had gone out of business and even hired a few of their people to keep up with demand. When that company decided to get back into the game, I decided it was time to begin acquiring cranes of my own. Operating capital was of course limited and so I started looking to buy cranes at auction and soon I had a

50-ton, an 80-ton, a 12-ton and two 14-tons. In just five years we went from one old crane to seven very respectable cranes and things just sort of took off from there. We purchased our first new crane from Nixon-Egli Equipment Co. back in 1998 and then another one in 2000. I built a very good relationship with Mark Lomas at Nixon-Egli and he sold me many new and used cranes over a stretch of 25 plus years. Today I work with Tom Trevithick of Nixon-Egli and purchased a 100-ton from them just last year. We have a great inventory of cranes including several 40-tons, a 70-ton, a new style 75-ton, (3) 90-tons and a new 100-ton, new 200-ton and new 275-ton. Nixon-Egli has always been there for us with nothing but excellent service over the years. We are celebrating 30-years in 2013 and Nixon-Egli has been a big part of our success.”

From one single crane back in 1983, Bob’s Crane Service has grown to a fleet of over (20) cranes, ranging from 5-tons to 275-tons with boom lengths from 40 foot to 343 feet. The company continues to work for the biggest names in the business, providing cranes and operators for work on a long list of bridges and freeways. Bob’s Crane Service is proud to have been part of jobs like the new San Diego Petco Park, a long list of surrounding hotels, as well as work in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter and multiple military bases. Michelle Drosis has been with us since 1996, she worked long hours as our main Dispatcher for about 15 years, along with various payroll/administrative duties. She has and continues to do a great job. Michelle now serves in Operations, performing accounting duties and back up to the Dispatcher. Lester Williams has over 34-years experience within the construction industry,

with 26-years in the truck crane rental industry exclusively.

Lester’s vast knowledge and experience are a huge asset to our organization and he has progressed from operator/ foreman and dispatcher to his current position in sales and estimating today. Ray “Chip” Enniss joined us in 2005 with over 36-years experience in crane rental applications. Chip worked for many years at one of California’s largest crane rental companies and his experience and reputation for quality services is well known in our industry.

Wilmington Refinery Erects New Vacuum Tower

new unit is fully operational at the 97,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Wilmington, California. This 26-foot-tall tower will help the plant maximize gasoline, diesel and jet fuel production by increasing the amount of vacuum gas oil produced from crude.

The erection of the new vacuum tower was erected with the help of Bragg Crane Service back in July of 2012.

Bragg Crane Service salesman and marketing executive Paul Reitnourer explains, “This was an engineered lift that was slightly complicated by the fact that we were required to work in an extremely limited space area. All three of the cranes that were utilized in the lifts had to be placed right next to the base of the vessel. In addition, we were of course required to follow all of the usual refinery safety precautions. We build a pad out of dirt base material and timber mats in order to properly distribute the ground bearing load, as the ground in this particular area was soft and showed lower than normal physical ground bearing limits.

We utilized our Liebherr LR1400 crawler crane for the primary lift and a Grove GMK7550 as the tail crane. When the vacuum tower came into port; the shipping saddles did not lineup. So in order to transport the load, they had to build a sail fixture to fit their transport system. So

once we began the lift at the refinery, we used the Liebherr for the primary lift, the Grove 7550 as the tail crane and our Grove GMK5275 to remove the sail fixture, which was attached to the bottom of the vessel.

Now we were able to upend the 500,000 lb. vacuum tower. It is not every day that perform a 250 ton pick, but by taking our time engineering the lift plan, the entire job went off without a hitch.”

Rose Bowl Renovation Improvement Project

The Rose Bowl Stadium is currently receiving a $152 million renovation, the largest investment in the history of the 88-year-old iconic structure. The focus of the three-year, threephase project is to expedite ingress/egress, improve concourse circulation, increase the number of concession stands and restrooms, provide state-ofthe-art premium seating products in a rebuilt press box and install a new scoreboard and cuttingedge video board. In addition, the renovation will address key stadium infrastructure needs that will allow the facility to continue to operate for decades to come.

Bragg Crane and Rigging was called upon by W & W Steel to erect in the press box renovation portion of the project. Matt Brondos is a project manager for

Bragg Crane and Rigging and he comments, “This project lasted around one year for us, from October 2011 to October 2012.

We were utilized in several ways, but predominantly to erect, bolt, and weld the new iron around the existing structure in order to make the press box larger. We also helped in the demolition of the existing press box structure by lowering large portions to the ground for further demolition and processing. We started out with a 160-ton American 8460

conventional crane that was setup with 180-feet of main boom and a 40-foot jib to assure that we could reach over the back side of the structure and be able to put the pieces down on the front or bowl side of the press box.

The heaviest of the picks were about 62,500 lbs. and in total we did around 2,300 lifts and a grand total of around 1,800 tons.

columns and also three levels of rakers on both the north and south wings, where we set some large and heavy precast pieces.

For this we brought in 300-ton Liebherr 1280 crawler crane. We also utilized our 40-ton Link-Belt and Grove cranes to assist with other lifts.

Coordinating between lifts for the demolition and tying into the existing renovation presented

somewhat of a challenge. We worked with Miller Environmental performing demo lifts on a second shift and hanging iron the next day on new construction.

The owner’s schedule had a pretty tight deadline, where there had to be a certain number of box seats available for opening day. We worked hard and smart and completed all of our work safely and on time.”

Bragg’s Heavy Transport and Bragg Crane Service Assist with Installation of the new Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum’s New HighDefinition Video Display

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission recently went forward with plans to manufacture and install a new high-definition video display for the Coliseum. The new display tower stands approximately 40 feet high and spans 150 feet long, ranking it among the largest of those in college facilities, at the renowned home of University of Southern California football.

The high definition display is 792 lines of resolution high by 3,000 columns wide with lines of LED’s on 15 mm spacing. The video board can operate as a single giant display or be divided into multiple zones (windows) to show a wide variety of statistics, information, graphics, animatio and live and recorded video.

Heavy Transport specializes in over-sized, multi-dimensional and large capacity cargo (from 1 16

ton to 1,600 tons) and they were responsible for the safe shipment of the truss system used to hold the new video board. Terry Derrick, project manager for Bragg Crane & Rigging explains, “The truss was dismantled into six sections for both the top and bottom chord. Once on site, a five-man Bragg Crane & Rigging crew reassembled the truss frame with the help of a 40-ton crane, supporting forklifts and boom lifts. Bragg Crane Service then hoisted the truss with two Link-Belt 300tons conventional truck cranes with 205 feet of hammerhead boom. One crane was used on either end, coordinated by the Ironworker General Foreman, utilizing two raising gangs and both operators. The truss was then lowered down on the (2) 6 foot in diameter columns and welded into place. The (20) catwalk sections were installed using a Bragg 90-ton hydraulic crane and one erection crew. The braces for the screen structure were comprised of a comprised of a combination of 1 inch plate,

10 inch tubes and 1-1/4 inch diameter bolts, which required scanning, and core drilling into the existing 80-year plus existing concrete structure. We logged 550 hours of overtime in the field in order to have the screen functional by the September 3rd game day deadline. The screen itself was producing images by August 30th and the final speaker cabinets were hoisted into place on September 19th using a 40-ton hydraulic crane and a composite crew of ironworkers and technicians. The final siding in USC Trojan red and yellow is expected to be complete prior to the next scheduled home game on October 1, 2013. At the height of the project, the manpower was ramped up to a total of 15 ironworkers and operators.”

Caltrans and Port of Long Beach begin $1 billion Gerald Desmond Bridge replacement project Written by: Brian Hoover

The Port of Long Beach is the nation’s second-busiest seaport and more than $140 billion in trade moves through this harbor each year. The Gerald Desmond Bridge is a vital part of the flow of goods from the Port, with nearly 15 percent of the nation’s waterborne cargo bearing down upon it. This bridge was first

opened in 1968 and was quite obviously not intended to support today’s tremendous traffic loads and volumes. While the old bridge is safe for commuters today, it is rapidly deteriorating.

The bridge now handles as many as 68,000 vehicle trips a day and about 18 million trips a year. Even with costly maintenance, the old bridge cannot be sustained long-term. With that in mind,

the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Port of Long Beach have begun a project to replace the Desmond Bridge. The nearly $1 billion project is a joint effort of Caltrans and the Port, with funding also from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro).

Construction of the new bridge is expected to take five years, create thousands of jobs and meet the region’s transportation and cargo-movement needs for many years to come.

The new bridge will be built with a cable-stayed design. With 200 feet of clearance over the water, the new bridge will be high enough to accommodate the newest generation of the most-efficient cargo ships. And with three lanes in each direction plus safety lanes it will be wider and better able to serve the thousands of cars and trucks that use the bridge each day. Major participants in the joint venture include: Shimmick Construction Company Inc., FCC Construction S.A., Impregilo S.P.A., Arup North America Ltd. and Biggs Artist Rendering

Cardosa Associates Inc. The total cost of the overall bridge replacement project is estimated at about $1 billion, including site preparation, demolition and other considerations.

With the twin 50-story-high towers, the new bridge will be one of the tallest cable-stayed bridges in the United States and the first of its kind in California.

The replacement project will allow the Gerald Desmond Bridge to remain in use while the new bridge is erected adjacent to it.

The new bridge is among $4.5 billion in current and planned

improvements to further modernize the Port of Long Beach and keep it competitive.

Over the years they have added several other equipment lines to their offering and in 2002 decided to get into the crane sales and rental business under the name Coastline Equipment Crane Division.

continue to manufacture price point machine sales from our rental fleet and I think this will continue well into the next several years.”

Coastline Equipment Crane Division has offices in Sacramento and Santa Ana and Terisa McConnell is the crane division manager.

Terisa comments, “Coastline Crane started out at a prime time in the economy and by our third year of business we were solidly entrenched in the California crane industry.

Getting all of the various departments lined up and running properly with the right personnel was definitely a challenge. Consistent steady 22

growth was realized, as our customer base continued to increase in all three states.

Growth continued as basic infrastructure like bridges, highways and utilities were in desperate need of repair or replacement. We also began to see a heavy spike in the energy business and utilization of our cranes for use on oilfields, wind farms and solar projects. 2012 was a record setting year for Coastline Equipment’s crane division. Our rental operation also enjoyed a record year.

in our fleet that is older than three years and all are CARB compliant. It is the combined efforts and unmatched service and support from everyone here at Coastline that has allowed us to do so well since our inception. He has been with the company since 2003 and has this to say about the rental division, “We have a very healthy inventory of 17-ton to 35-ton Manitex boom trucks for rent, as well as 15-ton to 100-ton Tadano rough terrain cranes and Skyjack 20,000 lb. reach lifts. Link-Belt’s CraneFest 2012 Hosts International Crane Market Link-Belt’s triennial CraneFest hosted a record number of attendees September 24th 28th. Nearly 800 customers, distributors, and members of the media were treated with Bluegrass hospitality while they observed the best the global crane market has to offer. “It’s a real privilege for us to be able to accommodate such a large contingency of crane owners. Not only do they get to observe our machines first-hand, but we get to show them our appreciation for being great customers of our product,” said Link-Belt Vice President for Marketing, Sales, and Customer Support, Bill Stramer.

This year’s CraneFest festivities included dinner at the Keeneland Sales Pavilion.

The demonstration highlighted transportation and lift features of

the entire line of Link-Belt cranes, culminating with the unveiling of the new 248 HSL and RTC-8080 Series II. Lunch was provided afterward and cranes were made available for customer

Link-Belt’s 298HSL Upgraded From 230 ton To 250 ton Capacities Lexington, KY (October 2, 2012) —The highly successful, jobproven 298 HSL lattice crawler crane from Link-Belt has received an increase in its base rating, from 230 USt (207 mt) to 250 USt (226 mt). This upgrade will take effect immediately and will be designated by a 250 USt capacity badge on all new cranes shipping from Link-Belt. An upgrade kit will be available for existing 230 USt (207 mt) 298 HSL machines which will include crane rating manuals, as well as a software upgrade with no physical changes or components required.

When introduced in 2007, the 298 HSL had a significant impact on the 230 ton replacement market that was identified as 26

consisting largely of an “aged fleet.” At that time, several regional and national users upgraded their older mechanical and early hydraulic crawlers with the 298 HSL.

Existing I-5 / Ortega Highway Interchange

IRVINE - Caltrans put shovels in the ground today on a project that will bring much-needed improvements to a major interchange in San Juan Capistrano, while creating a new gateway to the historic downtown area.

The $86 million project will replace the existing I-5/Ortega Highway interchange and increase the traffic-carrying capacity of the bridge over the freeway.

“These improvements will relieve congestion at one of Orange County’s busiest traffic chokepoints, making driving much less stressful for motorists,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty.

The existing on-and off-ramps at the interchange will also be widened, a new northbound I-5 on-ramp from the Ortega Highway will be built, and the highway will be realigned to reroute westbound drivers from Ortega onto Del Obispo Street.

Since 2004, the average daily traffic volume at the intersection daily has risen from 71,000 to nearly 100,000.

The project, which is expected to take two years to complete, is a partnership between Caltrans, the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and the city of San Juan Capistrano. It is funded by the State Transportation Improvement Program ($47 million); Proposition 1B ($31 million); OCTA’s Measure M; San Juan Capistrano ($4 million); and Orange County ($4 million).

“We are very pleased to partner with the state, county and city on a project that will bring significant relief to those who live, work and visit San Juan Capistrano,” said OCTA Chairman Greg Winterbottom. “Improving Ortega Highway is another positive example of government at all levels working together toward a common goal.”

Along with the traffic benefits, more landscaping will be planted to attract visitors to historic San Juan Capistrano.

“Ten years in the planning, the start of the I-5/ Ortega Highway Interchange Project is finally here,” said San Clemente Mayor John Taylor. “It will transform the flow of traffic on and off the freeway.
