“I think design and transparency go hand in hand. It’s crucial to make things that stand out and appeal to students since we are competing with 15-20 other emails per day. I hope Student Union graphics can bring a sense of joy even though our inboxes are often a place of stress.” -Cienna Newett

“As an additional designer, I want to be the support to the other members by being available to help with any task/design that needs to be done. I hope to make their load lighter in any way possible, so they can put their best foot forward to lead and serve the student body. In addition, I hope to bring what I know about design to assist in communicating to the student body in a clear, engaging and friendly way.” - Emily Lew

“As we push for systemic change at CalArts, we can’t fall behind in terms of structural changes in areas that we, the students, can control. Creating change needs to start from the bottom up and not the other way around.” - Tan Sangmanee

The Student Union Constitution Committee is a newly formed group responsible for overseeing and proposing the ongoing policy structure of Union. The group is comprised of only Union representatives as they are tasked with creating new draft proposals for the Union bylaws (if needed) and is the designated place where drafts of Union letters/proposals are created before it’s approved and sent out to the student body.

“Working with the Wellness Committee this past semester has been very rewarding. During such an uncertain time it was wonderful to have a place to work on positive things that were directly helping students with their wellbeing.” -Wes Love 28

Wellness // Student Union Fall Recap // 2020

“Working with the Wellness committee this past semester has been really exciting. As a new student it’s been great to be able to have a connection to the physical space and something to plan for and look forward to when we return to campus. I’m really excited we were able to raise money last semester so that this next semester we can work on the details as well as other resources for combating food insecurity at CalArts.”

“By bolstering our pantry, CalArtians won’t have to worry about when or where their next meal will come from and will be able to perform better in their classes. A healthy mind starts with the basics of being able to maintain sufficient diet and hygiene and that is what the members of Student Union want to provide for all. We hope to successfully build a healthier CalArts community together with help from the public.”

Mission Statement The Student Internationality Committee (SIC) was developed as a result of institute negligence to the black community and students of color at large. We, the Student Union Student Intersectionality Committee (SIC), aim to create a safe space working to provide radical inclusion and amplified student input for all at CalArts. We want to provide an ever changing platform that serves the needs of the students as those needs evolve. SIC will be a place of constructive, actionable conversation and cross pollination of ideas, people, pedagogical approaches, and backgrounds. We want to promote a sense of transparency and accountability between the student body’s marginalized communities and the faculty and administration, furthering the idea of shared governance and student input in institute diversity decision making.

Halloween // Student Union Fall Recap // 2020

The CalArts Halloween Event functions as a celebration of the artists who attend our school, as well as an opportunity for the whole of the CalArts community to gather and showcase our uniqueness. In partnership with Student Union, we have created an event that celebrates our diverse community that makes up CalArts. It is run, managed, and designed by current CalArts students, making it an entirely one of a kind experience.

D O N AT I O N U P D AT E CalArts Halloween was supported by a generous gift from The Evelyn Sharp Foundation. Student Union & CalArts look forward to strengthening our relationship with current and new donors as we work to fund this Institute facing event separately from Student Activity fees.
