To honor UC Davis’ centennial year, the Associated Students of UC Davis (ASUCD) and the Cal Aggie Student Alumni Association (SAA) launched the Aggie Traditions

program in 2008. Together, these groups researched the 50 most quintessential Davis experiences and compiled the Aggie Traditions Book to raise awareness of these traditions amongst the student body. Starting with

the 2011-2012 school year, all incoming freshman receive an Aggie Traditions Book at the annual New Student Celebration.

Beginning this school year, SAA hosted an event specific to each of the 50

Aggie Traditions, which it will continue to do annually.

This gives students the opportunity to experience all 50 by the time they graduate. Students can print a worksheet from the Aggie Traditions website and take it along as they complete each tradition, then submit it to SAA for review. And as of May 2013, Aggie Traditions also has an app for iOS devices, with an Android version slated for release this summer. Users can easily check off and post photos as they complete each tradition.

Whether they attend the SAA-hosted events or complete the traditions on their own, those who prove they have completed all 50 will receive a medallion to wear proudly at their commencement ceremony.

This spring, four graduating seniors — MANDY HANOU, ANGELICA THORNTON, ARTEM TROTSYUK and PHILIP YIP — will be the first students honored for completing the program.

Hanou first learned about Aggie Traditions during her training as an Orientation Leader last summer, and immediately wanted to participate. “I have so much pride in UC Davis and I just love the school,” she said.

“The medal and the bragging rights were just icing on the cake.”

Though she did not actively start working through the checklist until her senior year, Hanou found that her activities on campus — including the California Aggie Marching Band-uh! — left her with just nine Aggie

Traditions still to complete.

these games, including the ones at Cal Poly,” Hanou said. “We won three of the four while I was in school here,” including a particularly exciting game in 2010 in which UC Davis defeated Cal Poly 22-21 in San Luis Obispo.

Like Hanou, Yip credits Band-uh! for helping him complete many of the Traditions. His Tradition #50 involved watching Band-uh! perform at games and rallies.

He even joined the band himself as a clarinet player last year. “Band-uh! has a long history with generations of students connecting with the school,” he said.

“It is what brought me to recognize Aggie Pride at a greater level.”

“I created a tradition called Stride for Aggie Pride 5K […] to promote student health and wellness, and raise money for student scholarship support,” he said. “Health and wellness are my passion, and the opportunity given this year to work on the 5K was remarkable.” The race, held on April 7, attracted around 1,800 participants and raised nearly $17,500 to benefit Associated Students of UC Davis (ASUCD) scholarships and We Are Aggie Pride emergency student grants.

Thornton was eager to complete the Aggie Traditions when she heard about the program through SAA at the

As a transfer student, she felt some urgency to experience the best of the University before graduation. “I wanted to get the most out of my time at Davis,” she said. “I am a senior and I think it dawned on me that I will never get this time back.”

While some traditions — like Picnic Day and Whole Earth Festival — are well known even outside the Davis community, others are lesser known. Yip first learned of the Meat Lab and on-campus movie nights through the program.

Picnic Day “classic favorites” that define the Davis community.

Trotsyuk particularly enjoyed riding the Unitrans bus, something he had never needed to do until senior year. “Unitrans offers fast and reliable service for students; it was pretty fun taking the bus to class,” he said. Yip loved the athletic traditions like participating in intramural sports and attending football games. Hanou and Thornton both agree on another beloved tradition: visiting the cows. “To me, this is the tradition that is most unique to UC Davis because few other schools have cows on campus,” Hanou said.

“Where I’m from, you only see cows at a petting zoo,” said Thornton, who made friends with one spotted brown cow she affectionately named Coco Puff.

As her time at UC Davis draws to a close, Thornton reflects on her Tradition #50: decorating her commencement cap. “I think it’s very easy to lose your individuality in college.

Decorating my cap allows me to show who I am and stand out from the hundreds of other Political Science students dressed exactly like me [at graduation].”

As the Aggie Traditions program becomes more accessible and better known, new generations of students can experience these quintessential elements of UC Davis, which Yip feels is an important once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all Aggies.

n April 6, CAAA held the Spring Scholars dinner to honor and recognize our 2012-2013 scholarship recipients and the donors that make these scholarships possible. Alumni donors were able to award their student and hear about their academic year. The CAAA scholarship program is one of the oldest in the UC system awarding over $50,000 annually to 48 students in 28 regions. our Cal Aggie Alumni Association Board of Director’s held its final meeting of the 2012-13 academic year on June 1. Dean HAROLD LEVINE gave a presentation on the first 10 years of the UC Davis School of Education and led a celebration of the official launching of the School of Education Alumni Association Chapter.

The major CAAA undertaking on behalf of the entire UC Davis community is the development of a family camp in the Sierra Nevada. The board moved closer to a purchase process for a piece of real estate in the mountains along the I-80 corridor and is developing a business plan and layout for an all season mountain camp. All CAAA members and selected non-members, parents, students, faculty and staff will receive a survey this month to help guide the board in this exciting project.

The board also celebrated the retirement of JAN MORRISON who served for six years as a director and scholarship committee chair. Also retiring from ex officio capacities on the board were REBECCA STERLING, former ASUCD President and KATIE KOLESAR, Chair of the Graduate Student Association, and AMBER MCINTIRE, Student Alumni Association President.

BRIAN EBERT ’92 (Political Science) serves as Assistant Chief Clerk and Parliamentarian of the California State Assembly and resides in Sacramento.

DANIELLE DUARTE ’05 (Psychology) is an elementary school counselor and lecturer at San Diego State University residing in Carlsbad.

NATHAN KOZON, ’03 (Biological Sciences) is a research associate with a biotechnology firm in San Francisco.
