P Popular Traditional Events The Battle of the Marching Bands Doxie Derby Race Entertainment Stages

icnic Day is one of UC Davis’ most revered traditions for students, families, staff, faculty, the greater Davis and regional communities, and Aggie alumni. Taking place on April 18, this year’s Picnic Day is themed “Heart of Our Community” to celebrate the multifaceted and vibrant UC Davis community and the positive impact the university has had on countless individuals.

This family-friendly event is free for all to come and experience the richness of diversity and achievement at UC Davis in the areas of research, teaching, service and campus life. With more than 200 events taking place throughout campus, Picnic Day serves as the university’s annual Open House and is a great time for Aggie alumni and their friends and

family to come back to campus.

This year marks the 101st celebration.

With that in mind, CAAA wanted to take a spin on this milestone and share a “Picnic Day 101” classroom experience with our alumni. In the next few pages, CAAA Executive Director Rich Engel and four UC Davis families share tips and tricks on how to make the most out of a Picnic Day experience, no matter your stage in life, and why Picnic Day is such an important part about being an Aggie.

Picnic Day Tips for a Family with Young Kids

Get a place to stay as close to campus as possible so you don’t have far to go if the kids need to take a rest or nap.

If you can, find a pool so the kids can cool off at the end of long hot Picnic Day.

What is it about Picnic Day that embodies the Aggie spirit?

The livestock, horse and agronomy displays—the displays that exhibit the university’s agricultural roots. We think the farm and ranch displays ARE Picnic Day.

My favorite Picnic Day is easy to remember—it was in 2000, when Rich Engel introduced me to Vicky at the Alpha Gamma Rho BBQ. As a student I always enjoyed driving antique farm equipment in the parade, for the Antique Mechanics Club.

Vicky first went to Picnic Day when she was an undergrad. She remembers getting up at zero dark thirty to gather animals for the petting zoo. A couple years ago we made a resolution to see something different every year. We noticed that we were traveling the same circuit on campus each Picnic Day. After going to 25-plus Picnic Days it is a good idea to add some variety to what you see.

What’s your #1 Picnic Day tip for alumni in the same phase of life as you?

Engel kicks off our alumni guide to planning the perfect Picnic Day with some of his favorite memories and personal tips.

rowing up in a rural community that was a long distance from my relatives made family reunions a very special occasion for me. The gathering of my brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins became a time for celebration and reflection. My first Picnic Day was in 1986 and my initial impression was that this was an extended family reunion, albeit with tens of thousands of my extended Aggie family. This will be my 29th year, and what has never changed is that Picnic Day is an event to bring the next generation of Aggies to and get kids excited about higher education and everything UC Davis offers the world.

I believe what is most important about Picnic Day, and what this year’s theme speaks to, is that this signature event is still about the Aggie family first.

Picnic Day stayed strong through a period when other university tradition programs disappeared. When we experienced attendance challenges, particularly from

2007-09, this university made a commitment to re-focusing on our core, which is the Aggie family. That focus is what will keep this tradition going for the next 101 years.

Going to Picnic Day is a lot like visiting Disneyland. If you want to get the most out of it, you need a plan before you get there. There are so many things to see that you

cannot expect to see them in all in one, two or three years.

I still have yet to see many of the big ticket items, and I’ve been going for nearly three decades! If there’s one thing I’ve learned during that time, it’s to avoid falling into a set routine each year.

Plot Your Picnic Day Plan

One big lesson my family and I have learned over the years is that you really need to prioritize and map out your feature attractions beforehand. A full schedule of events will be on the Picnic Day website before the event.

In terms of what I love best about Picnic Day, there is a lot of competition for this response, but one of our favorite Picnic Days was when we selected Dr. Chet McCorkle, then Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, as our Parade Marshal.

The next year, Chet and his former wife hosted our wedding reception in their backyard on Oeste Drive.

For alumni who go back as far back as we do—the late 60s—it is best to arrive for the Picnic Day breakfast. It is a super charger for getting in the Aggie spirit, especially when the Cal Aggie Marching Band barges in and plays those standards that get our pulses racing!

What is it about Picnic Day that embodies the Aggie spirit?

Picnic Day brings out the best in Aggie spirit by emphasizing the friendliness of the campus. The welcome mat is out for all—students, faculty, staff, alums, Aggie families, and the larger California community. It also emphasizes the community spirit of the university since many pitch in to make this major undertaking happen.

What was your first Picnic Day like and how do you think or hope this year will be different?

Tom: My first Picnic Day was in 1962 when I was a sophomore in high school. I had been encouraged to apply to UC Davis by my high school biology teacher, Dr. Gordon T. Simmons, DVM ’53.

That one day was all it took to hook me.

I loved everything I saw. I could not wish anything more for this or any subsequent Picnic Day—that these wonderful events will continue to showcase the campus in ways that attract the youth of today.

the parade. If you’re sitting in the central quad, you can’t cross the parade route.

Explore the Outskirts

If you want to see events that are further from central campus, such as at the Equestrian Center or sports complexes, plan extra time to get out to those places.

Battle of the Bands

If you want a prime spot for Battle of the Bands, you’ll want to lay down your picnic blanket next to Spafford Lake by at least 1:30 p.m.

Zone Out

While Aggies are famous for our bicycling, biking is a less-thanideal mode of transportation on Picnic Day because navigating the crowds can be difficult and unsafe—there will be a lot of dogs, kids, and strollers to watch out for.

pizza, respite from the elements, and get goodies from our partners. It’s also a comfortable meet-up spot for groups. Just remember it will close at 2:30 p.m.

Parking & Getting Around

Unfortunately there’s no secret parking lot for CAAA members, so the early bird rule applies again. If you do drive, write down your parking location or take a photo with your phone.

Taking Amtrak is the best alternative, and the Walter A. Buehler Alumni Center is just a 15-minute walk through the Arboretum from the station.

What do you love best about Picnic Day?

What’s your #1 Picnic Day tip for alumni in the same phase of life as you?

It’s a time to reconnect with campus and see the energy that exists between the students, the Davis community and alumni.

It’s a time to truly embrace our Aggie Pride!

Andy: The chance to see the combination of Aggie Pride and UC Davis Traditions, and to see the new aspects of UC Davis. My favorite event is still the sheep dog trials.

What is it about Picnic Day that embodies the Aggie spirit?

The students spearhead, organize, orchestrate, and pull off an amazing event.

To me, that’s what it’s all about—the students! It’s also fabulous to see so many alumni and friends of UC Davis return to campus. I hope the current students (outside of those involved with the planning of the event) understand the long-time importance of the day and will return to campus when they have families as well!

Andy: The fact that it is student-run and that it serves as true homecoming, which is focused on the school and not on sports.

Alison:

I’d say enjoy the time with your kids.

As parents of teens, it’s hard to always find the time to embrace the special moments.

So I’d say, cherish the memories, revisit the places that were important when everyone was young, love the time together, retell the same old stories, but also make a new memory or two. Bottom line, have fun together! Note to younger parents—start early in the day and take a break when the kids get tired!

Andy: Be flexible, listen for what they really like, and use it as a chance to see college students in their element.

What was your first Picnic Day like and how do you think or hope this year will be different?

It was probably Picnic Day 1986.

I transferred to UC Davis as a junior in 1985. I remember being in awe of all the people at my first Picnic Day. This year, I hope will be full of fun as it’s the last one before James (now a senior) leaves for college!

Andy: It was 1983. My primary memory was working late after an AGR Dinner to finish the float the night before, and then riding on the float. I would love to see more student-group-built floats.

Alison:

Bring portable diversions and snacks for waiting in line.

Bring earplugs for little ones who might be overwhelmed by the noise level.

Dress younger kids in bright colors. You’ll spot them faster if you’re separated. As an additional step, some parents choose to put their phone number on their kids with child safety temporary tattoos.

Also take a photo of the kids that morning (in what they’ll be wearing) on your phone.

If your children are younger, make an early trip to the Lost Children’s Booth at Hoagland Hall so they will know where to go, and to take advantage of the child identification system.

If your kids are older, both the Walter A. Buehler Alumni Center and Vanderhoef Quad are good places to designate as a meet-up spot.

Typically, when taking kids younger than 9 years old, it’s best to wrap up the day by noon.

The ARC Pavilion and Peter Rock Hall (formerly known as Chem 194) are not stroller-friendly. If you plan to attend events in either location, you’ll need to park or lock your stroller nearby. After parking your stroller, remember to remove anything valuable. Bring something to cover the seat, to protect it from getting too hot under the sun.

What do you love best about Picnic Day?

To me, Picnic Day is the real homecoming.

Alumni young and old return to campus and departments showcase the best of what they have to offer. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

What I love best about Picnic Day is that it serves as a homecoming for the UC Davis community. Sure, we have a homecoming in the fall with Pajamarino and what not; but, to me, Picnic Day is the real homecoming. Alumni young and old return to campus and departments showcase the best of what they have to offer. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

What is it about Picnic Day that embodies the Aggie spirit?

When I think of the Aggie spirit I think of the student-led efforts on campus. Whether it’s the CoHo, Unitrans or the ASUCD Pantry, these are organizations that exist to serve the Aggie community and all of them are student-led. Picnic Day celebrates the initiative of Aggies throughout campus, which itself is the largest student-run event in the country.

What’s your #1 Picnic Day tip for alumni in the same phase of life as you?

If I could share a Picnic Day tip with alums in the same phase of life as me it would be to discover a new place on campus (especially the events CAAA puts on for the day). UC Davis is an amazing place

and I would venture to guess that most of it goes undiscovered during our times as students. I took a tour of the animal hospital last summer and I was amazed by the array of services the hospital offers. And it seems like every year I visit there’s something new like the new dorms in Tercero or the Food Science building on the southern end of campus.

What was your first Picnic Day like and how do you think or hope this year will be different?

My first Picnic Day was in 2009. My sister was a sophomore at UC Davis and decided to throw me a birthday party, which so happened to coincide with Picnic Day. When we stepped on the UC Davis campus for Picnic Day I was truly amazed by the magnitude of the event. It was after my Picnic Day experience that I decided to transfer to UC Davis instead of UC Santa Cruz or UC Santa Barbara. Who knew that two years after attending the event, which ultimately led me to UC Davis, that I would be its Chair of the Board of Directors?

Not me. I think that speaks loudly of the opportunities you can find at UC Davis even if you’re a transfer student.

My hope for 2015’s Picnic Day is that the Board of Directors puts on an event they can be proud of. I know that the board of 2011 did just that. They were able to inject new ideas into Picnic Day while preserving the overall tradition of the event. I think this is important because you don’t want to make Picnic Day into some kind of perpetual, perfunctory event. I also hope that the message of 2011’s Picnic Day hasn’t faded away because we were pretty close to losing the event altogether.

Hopefully Aggies and the UC Davis community can celebrate responsibly in a manner where we continue to have Picnic Day serve as the campus’ marquee event of the year.

Two Decades of Guidance

I Richard Kossak Richard Kossak has been a source of advice for students at UC Davis for over 20 years, and has been selected as one of this year’s Picnic Day Parade Marshals in honor of his service.

n his closet at home, Richard Kossak has a collection of shirts and hats representing different student organizations at UC Davis.

Many of them say “Richard Kossak, Advisor,” on the back. It was often an honorary position, but one that counted more in Kossak and his students’ hearts than any formal title could.

His warm reputation at UC Davis is such that Kossak was selected by students as one of this year’s Picnic Day Parade Marshals.

After 22 years of working with student organizations at UC Davis, it comes as no surprise that Kossak has gotten to know a lot of students. He was instrumental in putting student organizations— including service clubs and

the Greek community—to work at running events oncampus, including catering events, performances at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, concessions during sports games, and the annual Picnic Day. But Kossak did much more than give students job opportunities. During those 22 years, he estimates that he’s given between 6,000 to 8,000 students advice on everything from event planning and execution to managing the stresses of school, social lives, and personal goals.

“The biggest reason I came to work was to partner with these students,” Kossak said.

“Students would ask me if I could meet with them, and I always told them, ‘What time do you need me?’ I didn’t

mind 12-hour workdays. I got to see the sun rise and set while I was working.”

When Kossak visits campus he stops in at the Silo or the ARC Pavilion, where he was the manager for many years. Although he no longer works on campus, students easily recognize him and recall fond memories of chatting with Kossak over a coffee or working for him.

“I was shocked and honored, and I’m really excited,” said Kossak about being nominated as comarshal. “I got the email and I thought ‘There’s so many great people on this campus; why me?’ So now I brag about it any chance I get.

Along with getting married and having kids, this is going to be one of the highlights of my life.”

First Aggie Week of Service

s part of this year’s Picnic Day celebration, UC Davis students, parents and alumni will be participating in the first ever Aggie Week of Service to showcase the volunteer efforts of the entire UC Davis community. Aggies across the country are supporting causes from a fundraiser in San Francisco to student food bank drive in Davis.

The Aggie Week of Service occurs the week before Picnic Day, April 11–18. Here are a few volunteer opportunities: Sacramento: Sactown 10 DATe: April 12

Join local Aggies for a one, five or 10-mile run to support the Children’s Miracle Network, which supports the UC Davis Children’s Hospital.

San Francisco: NAMI Fundraiser DATe: April 15

SF Aggies will team up with the National Alliance for Mental Illness to support research and education.

Orange County Harvest DATe: April 18

Enjoy Aggie camaraderie in OC fashion and support the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Heart of the Community

W

hen you sit down to talk to UC Davis staff member Jane Eadie, it’s clear that she is thinking about how to help you. She and her husband John, who is a professor of waterfowl biology at UC Davis, moved from Canada to Davis with their three daughters two decades ago to resolve what Eadie calls their “mid-life crisis” that was much bigger than a sports car.

“We were looking to change our life, to be in a place where we could have community,” said Eadie. They found a town and a university that was warm, welcoming and supportive of family life.

In return, Eadie has opened doors for students looking to make changes of their own.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with students with great ideas.”

Eadie believes that part of being an Aggie is giving back to the community, and it’s easy to see this passion in the projects that she has worked on over the years. As associate executive director and chief

program officer at the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, she has been integral in founding student volunteer programs such as Aggie Classrooms and We Are Aggie Pride and in leading those student programs and their members on paths to success. Aggie Classrooms regularly visits elementary schools in the area to introduce young students to the idea of college, and We Are Aggie Pride is a student fundraising program that has raised more than $100,000 in emergency student aid.

Eadie finds so much innate reward in supporting students that when she first found out about being named one of the parade marshals for the 101st Picnic Day, she thought it was a friendly joke. When she discovered the position was genuine, she was humbled and honored.

“I always tell students ‘You’re the reason I get up in the morning,’” Eadie said.

“There’s nothing that could mean as much to me as being selected by students as ‘heart of the community.’ That’s what we came here for.”

UC Davis celebrates seven distinguished alumni and friends

n February 6, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento hosted the 42nd annual Cal Aggie Alumni Association Awards Gala, where seven alumni and friends of UC Davis were recognized for their excellence. It was an evening of celebration and joy as we honored Aggies who have helped make the world a more productive and fruitful place.

Jerry W. Fielder Award

Kevin Bacon ’72 Moving UC Davis Forward This award honors a UC Davis graduate in recognition of service to the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, the UC Davis Foundation and the university. The award was established in 1973 to perpetuate the lifelong interests of one of the university’s most esteemed and supportive alumni, Jerry W. Fielder ’39 (1915-1972).

has made it his goal to pay forward the generosity he’s received throughout his life.

Bacon began his studies at UC Davis with the support of his family and a $150 scholarship from the Cal Aggie Alumni Association. At the time, the scholarship paid for half of his tuition.

“I understand that I didn’t get here by myself,” said Bacon, recipient of the Jerry W. Fielder Memorial Award.

“My parents sacrificed to get us into college, and you have to understand that you didn’t Click here for video do this by yourself. There’s a community of people involved in it.”

Days after graduation, Bacon joined the UC Student Lobby—a first-of-its-kind

organization that served as a voice for UC students at the State Capitol. During his tenure, Bacon helped to allocate millions of dollars for undergraduate courses, teachers and financial aid.

He then had a successful career in consulting, working at a number of companies such as PriceWaterhouseCoopers and IBM. Bacon joined the UC Davis Foundation Board in 2004 and has served on nine other volunteer boards throughout the university.

“The more I got involved, the more I understood that I grew up in an era where the state government provided most of the support of UC Davis,” said Bacon, who, with his wife Kim cred. ‘79, have donated to a number of university programs.

Emmy Werner Resiliency Through Trauma This award recognizes a non-alumnus(a) whose extraordinary service has advanced the university and made significant and lasting contributions to the campus. The honoree’s professional, personal, civic and philanthropic pursuits must reflect the high standards and values associated with UC Davis, the Cal Aggie Alumni Association and higher education.

This award is given only in years when a deserving recipient is identified.

P

rofessor emerita Emmy Werner believes that

hope and resiliency— not trauma—are what define one’s destiny. It’s a belief made all the more

powerful considering her childhood in Germany.

“When I was a child, I was just grateful to be alive because I did grow up during World War II and was subjected to a

lot of bombing day and night, and so at that time, you didn’t look far ahead, you just tried to stay alive,” said Werner, Distinguished Friend of the University Award Recipient.

“I think the impact of what happened to me when I was a child was probably inadvertently a way for me to choose the topics I worked on.”

Werner became the first in her family to attend college and her work in human development led her to UC Davis.

As one of the university’s first female faculty members, Werner helped build the UC Davis department of human ecology.

“Obviously, UC Davis has given me in terms of the opportunity to do the work that I want to do, and the least I could do is pass it to others.”

A pioneer in her field, Werner has greatly influenced the way that modern scientists approach the subject of human development. She has published 13 books on the subject and is the recipient of the Dolly Madison Award for Outstanding Lifelong Contributions to the Click here for video Development and Wellbeing of Children and Families.

She is also the first UC Davis faculty member to receive the Constantine Panunzio Distinguished Emeriti Award, the highest honor for an emeritus professor.

While her research has received many accolades, Werner states that teaching has been the most fulfilling aspect of her career. For that reason, she and her husband, Stanley Jacobsen, recently endowed a fellowship to support graduate students researching the genetic aspects of human behavior and development.

“Obviously, UC Davis has given me in terms of the opportunity to do the work that I want to do,” Werner said, “and the least I could do is pass it to others.”

works to prevent people from becoming his patients in the first place. He is internationally recognized as a pioneer in gun violence research and was among the first to look at the problem of gun violence as a public health issue.

His interest in injury prevention was first realized while he volunteered in Cambodia shortly after it was liberated from the Khmer Rouge regime.

“From those experiences, I quit my job,” said Wintemute, recipient of the 2015 Distinguished Achievement Award.

believes that UC Davis is a smart investment and its socially-conscious students and alumni are what set UC Davis apart from other universities.

“Davis has a sense of community, where you walk around and most people are friendly, and it’s really nice to be in a place where the standards are high,” said Dolan, recipient of the Aggie Service Award.

A member of the UC Davis Foundation Board, Dolan worked closely with UC Davis to revamp its investment strategy.

Using much of his own money and expertise, Dolan invested countless hours and traveled across the country interviewing money managers. The end result was a very innovative strategy for managing the UC Davis endowment that helped the university weather the most significant recession since the Great Depression and grow its endowment to more than $900 million.

Despite his impressive 30year career at multi-billion dollar investment firms, Dolan states that he’s most proud of his role as a mentor, which is why he teaches two classes each year at the

UC Davis Graduate School of Management.

“I worked with a lot of young people to give them some of the advantages I got that helped me in my career,” he said. “It’s extremely gratifying to see them not only professionally successful, but be very happy.”

When asked why he dedicates so much time to UC Davis, he said, “I’m really grateful for what UC Davis gave me in terms of the quality education, the relationships I developed and the inspiration for later career.

Dolan continues to invest his time, talents and resources to the university to ensure that the Aggie community will continue to produce quality graduates.

In 1978, his family immigrated to the United States in search of refuge and better opportunities.

Acclimating to the United States was challenging, but González found comfort in being part of a team by pursuing his lifelong passion of competitive swimming.

He flourished as a UC Davis student athlete, earning top honors as “All American” for three consecutive years.

“Going to the United States and getting an education at UC Davis taught

me values such as freedom, equality, democracy, helper of the oppressed, rightness, family and faith,” said González, who integrated those values as he built his career in and gave back to his hometown of Managua.

González has served as a volunteer firefighter for Managua, headed the Nicaraguan swimming team at the 2000 Summer Olympics, presides over the Nicaraguan Institute of Hispanic Culture, and volunteers at the Young Entrepreneurs of

Nicaragua—an organization that trains students from rural Nicaragua in financial literacy, entrepreneurship and workforce readiness. In addition to volunteer work, González serves as executive director of the Nicaraguan Development Institute.

“I’m committed with passion to work and to my loved ones and hope that I am remembered as someone who lavished love and energy upon the people and change someone’s life for the better,” said González.

nvolvement in public service has been part of Gita Sai Ram’s life from an early age. It is a passion that grew during her time at UC Davis and has earned her national recognition as she’s pursued her young career.

“I was that kid that during elementary school, junior high, and high school was always in student government, and also doing side projects of community service,” said Ram ’07, who was awarded this year’s Young Alumna Award in recognition of her outstanding professional contributions to the community soon after graduation. “At one point, it just felt so natural to not only have this as like a side thing, but more Click here for video

to pursue a career in community advocacy. Working through the Pew Charitable Trusts, Ram contributed heavily to the Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act, which helps military serving overseas vote in US elections.

She also chaired the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL), which helped place a record number of Asian American Pacific Islander interns and scholars in public

service. The MOVE Act was recognized by “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central and Ram’s work with CAPAL was personally recognized by Vice President Joe Biden.

“Growing up and kind of seeing how so many minority groups lacked a voice in politics, I’ve taken it upon myself to be that person to really represent minority groups,” Ram said. “Being able to make a difference is what motivates me every day.”

“I think this is a thing that we almost always underestimate,” said Chuang, whose first company, BEA Systems, employed more than 15,000 people across 38 countries.

Memorial Union Renovation Underw hen the renovated Coffee House opened in 2010, it was almost too popular. Students liked the open layout so much they would study at dining tables for hours, instead of using some of the other lounges in the Memorial Union.

So, Campus Recreation and Unions has embarked on an 18-month, $23.5 million renovation to modernize the campus’s aging main student center with a feel more like the CoHo, the Student Community Center and the front part of the ARC. University officials planned the project by holding monthly meetings with students, faculty and staff.

Funding for the project will be taken from reserves and financed through the existing Memorial Union bond.

“The MU is UC Davis’ iconic student center,” said Matt Fucile, director of Building Services with Campus Recreation and Unions. “Its prominence to campus is huge, (but) it’s a relic that doesn’t really vibe with what our students are looking for in social spaces.”

What’s Changing

The north side of the Memorial Union will expand slightly, interior walls will come down, the bookstore will get a facelift and more room for textbooks, the campus Veterans Affairs office will get a new space and seismic upgrades will be made.

One of the first noticeable changes is the relocation of the post office and Campus Copies to a portable building adjacent to Wickson Hall, west of the Memorial Union. The CoHo-to-Go has closed,

way while the nearby Corral convenience store will remain open for one more quarter. See the sidebars on these pages for all the logistics.

In March, construction began and the first and second floors of the union—not including the east wing or CoHo—and are now closed, along with the north courtyard.

The MU’s north wall will not only be pushed out, but it will be straightened, eliminating the angle that came with an addition in the 1990s. Inside, an atrium will be created with the top floor overlooking the first level, similar to the Student Community Center.

Also in March, textbook sales moved from the basement to a temporary location in The Pavilion, and the bookstore’s general merchandise moved to the east wing of the Memorial Union.

“The arcade games are terribly underutilized,” Fucile said.

Construction on the rest of the Memorial Union will continue until October 2016, at which time the remaining areas and the games basement will reopen.

Back to the building’s original style

The union was much more open when it was built in 1955, said Greg Secor, senior project manager with Design and Construction Management. Then, in an early ‘90s renovation, rooms were cordoned off, creating small lounges that he likened to a quiet library instead of

an open space where students can work together.

“How students study now is very different than the model that it was designed on,” Secor said.

The remodel will take the Memorial Union back to the intent of the original design, and reemphasize a fact that not everyone knows: that

the building is a memorial to UC Davis students who died while serving in the military.

Today, the names of 135 fallen Aggies are engraved on a wall next to the fireplace in Griffin Lounge. In the MU renovation, the fireplace will be removed and the memorial relocated and redesigned— complete with a computer

screen for display of the Golden Memory Book, which has a page for each of the fallen Aggies. The original book will also be displayed.

he Cal Aggie Alumni Association, in partnership with international alumni chapters, is helping UC Davis break new ground in the Americas through recent trips to Mexico City and Chile.

For the first time in UC Davis history, Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi visited Mexico City for an alumni reception at the Casa de California. The event, which was attended by 110 alumni and friends of the university,

was made possible because of the collaborative effort of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association (CAAA), UC Davis Office of Student Affairs, the Mexican government and the UC Davis Mexico City Alumni network led by Gustavo Garcia and Garrett Nasworthy. Chancellor Katehi, who is leading UC Davis in pursuit of becoming a Hispanic Serving Institute by 2018, promoted increased engagement between countries and more opportunities for academic collaboration.

“The Chancellor is excited for UC Davis to engage with

international universities, to travel and make connections, especially in the Americas,” said Ginger Welsh ’95, Director of International Alumni Programs. “We have a lot of alumni in Mexico who are doing really interesting things, and we’re delighted to provide more support and opportunities for cooperation.”

Alumni also have been building international relationships in Chile, where the new UC Davis Life Sciences Innovation Center opened this past January.

Linda Alexander ’72

U

C Davis alumna Linda Alexander’s life changing moment happened during the summer of 1963 when she was 13 years old. Growing up in South Stockton, California, she would help her aunt, who was a teacher, in her classroom. One day, she met the principal of the school who she said told her that she would never become anything.

“I was determined to prove that man wrong,” said Alexander. “When I was in college, we were some of the first students of color to go to school at UC Davis in real numbers. We were confronted with people saying ‘What are you doing here? You don’t belong here.’

“Because of that, my message to current students

is always ‘You do belong here. You can be the doctor, the lawyer, the president that you want to be.’”

Alexander attended UC Davis thanks to the Educational Opportunity Program, part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. After graduating from UC Davis with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1972 and a master’s in education from CSUS, Alexander dedicated her 30-year career to helping bring black students at UC Davis the wealth of resources that the university has to offer.

Alexander started working in the financial aid office, and then moved to the Learning Skills Center and the STEP program, teaching study skills to students. During this time, she developed the Empowerment Program with her colleague John Ortiz-Hutson.

The Empowerment Program helped bring academic assistance, faculty exposure, cultural excursions, and positive role models to students, with a focus on the African and African-American community. She played a major role in creating courses designed to increase the retention rates of African and African American students and helped develop the African and African American Academic Theme Program that continues to this day in Leslie Campbell Hall.

“I’m proud of how much I grew at UC Davis, through earning my master’s degree, working as a staff member on campus and bringing educational programs to African and African-American students,” said Alexander.

“I’m proud that as a retiree, there are still avenues for me to go back to the university

and continue supporting those students.

“When I worked on campus, I told students: ‘I’m just your advisor; you are the ones who are living this, the ones who will benefit. This is a learning experience for you that will carry over to your life after college. These programs are not ours; they’re yours.’ Students have a unique and special opportunity to grow and flourish at UC Davis that can’t be found at other universities.”

In 2011, UC Davis founded the Linda Frances Alexander Scholars Program in Alexander’s honor, a success program for minority students. The LFA Program provides academic, social, and cultural enrichment for African, African-American, and multi-racial students, with the aim of promoting educational success in a competitive global market.

“I’m so honored that the university supports LFA, that it continues the things that John [Ortiz-Hutson] and I worked for, to help black students succeed academically, get them ready for graduate school by teaching them how to do in-depth research, and get them ready for the job world,” Alexander said.

Andrew Borst is the 2014 –15 Blue and Gold Leadership Scholarship Recipient

treats community involvement as a given in membership of the UC Davis student body.

Growing up in a small, close-knit community in Tehachapi, California, Andrew Borst’s family taught him to put other people’s needs ahead of his own.

Seeing his father work as a firefighter and administer first aid to victims of drug abuse and domestic violence inspired Borst to make his own positive impact on the community. Some of the projects he tackled as a student included tutoring children of migrant farm workers who were learning to read through the Migrant Education Program and renovating the helipad of the local fire department as part of his Eagle Scout project. These projects developed in Borst a compassion for the underprivileged and the tenacity to enact positive change.

“What good is it to make yourself better if you’re not picking up other people around you?” said Borst. “The world is a difficult place for some people, and having someone who wants to help makes it easier for them.”

the community means being part of a mutually reinforced success team, and that perspective has guided his first months at UC Davis.

He and his international roommates have been giving each other language lessons, he’s spent several hours developing connections and studying with professors, and he’s made new friends through intramural sports.

Above all, Borst is glad to

know that the UC Davis community places a high value on the reciprocity of learning with teachers and students who are all committed to helping each other excel in their studies.

In recognition of his leadership in community service, Borst is this year’s CAAA Blue & Gold Leadership Scholarship recipient—the most prestigious award given by the Cal Aggie Alumni

Association to an incoming freshman student.

“UC Davis provides an environment in which you can feel comfortable, no matter how many people there are,” Borst said. “Within the first week I felt like this was somewhere I’d want to spend the rest of my life.”

Profiles Janis Akuna ’72

uccess in any business starts with passion,”

Janis Akuna ’72 said in

describing her dual careers in financial planning and wine.

Akuna is vice president and a senior investment management consultant with Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. “I absolutely love that I can help people make the right decisions about their money,” she said.

Her passion for helping customers came together with her appreciation for wine in 2008, when she co-founded Andis Wines in Amador County’s Shenadoah Valley. Winemaking is a competitive business, but Akuna said, “It’s a lifestyle that involves meeting wonderful people, eating wonderful food and, of course, drinking wonderful wine.”

Akuna directs the operational and philanthropic activities, contributes to the marketing and sits on the tasting/blending panel.

The winery is already earning recognition for its Zinfandel, Barbera, Grenache, Sauvignon blanc, Petite Sirah and other wines.

“Our goal at Andis Wines is to build the brand by consistently making the most delicious wines,” she

ARL ANTINK ’99 remembers

“Not that I was drinking at the time, mind you,” said Antink with a chuckle. “The industry was experiencing a lot of growth while I was in high school, and later

on I got started with home brewing and stuff like that.”

Antink’s father worked for Liquor Barn at the time, and Antink would work for him during holidays and breaks from school. From early on, he was interested in the craftsmanship and precision involved in winemaking and related industries.

When he entered UC Davis, Antink participated in the Master Brewers Extension

Even before graduation, Antink began pursuing winemaking professionally.

In 1997, he was hired as enologist at St. Helena’s Folie à Deux, where he worked for the next three years. By the time he graduated, Antink was assistant winemaker, supervising all day-to-day winery operations.

In 2000, Antink became winemaker for the familyowned Von Strasser Winery, continuing his administrative work and adding a hefty artistic element as well. He was a guiding mind behind Von Strasser’s collection of wines for the next five years.

“With winemaking, every year starts out new. You only get one shot a year with winemaking. Every vintage is a little bit different, and I like the challenge that poses,” he said. “It’s not just a business; it’s your style and skills on display for everyone. “We wanted a design that reflected our Swiss heritage, and also was about place,” said Diane. “Pinot is really about the site—the grapes truly taste different from one vineyard compared to a neighboring vineyard.”

the hill, would likely not be in the family if it weren’t for her husband John’s dedication.

Through strategic diversification and hard work John has successfully preserved his parents’ legacy and built a new business for his and Diane’s children while many other small family farms throughout the country have been on steady decline.

“The goal has always been: what’s it going to take to keep the farm in the family? No matter how tough things get, farming’s not like running a retail operation or service business, because you are tied to the land,” said John Bucher ’84. “You have to

figure out how to navigate through lean years with the land you have.”

The farm has been in the family since 1958 when John’s parents purchased 360 acres in the Russian River Valley and realized their dream of owning a dairy. John loved growing up around animals and was the kind of kid who’d bring home injured birds and wildlife and nurse them back to health. To this day his family says it’s hard to find a photo of him without a dog or cow nearby.

With his knack for caring for animals, majoring in animal science and agricultural economics at UC Davis was a

natural choice. It also proved excellent preparation for the rapid changes that rippled through the California dairy business soon after John took the reins. In less than a decade, the average herd size doubled, putting pressure on smaller operations.

I took a short course in viticulture, but what I really gained from my undergraduate years was learning how to learn and how to use your resources.”

After evaluating farmstead cheese and berries, John concluded that winegrapes were the best opportunity to diversify. Over time, John cultivated relationships with wineries and the vineyard

This enabled the vineyard to bolster the farm during years when the dairy was impacted by the recession, high feed prices, and drought. A few years after the vineyard became established, so did the market for organic milk.

The Buchers completed the dairy’s transition to certified

organic in 2008, and found the shift has benefited their grapes as well.

“Everything John does in the vineyard protects the organic integrity of the nearby pastures,” said Diane. “The goal is to continually educate ourselves on best practices going forward and keep our footprint as small as possible.”

In 2011, the Buchers expanded into producing their own wine. Participating in CAAA’s Alumni Wine Program coincides with their “a rising tide lifts all boats” philosophy.

“It’s a true symbiotic relationship. After winemakers try our wine at tasting events, many inquire about purchasing grapes,” said John. “And becoming a winemaker has helped me become a better grape grower, because I understand even more deeply what the winemakers are looking for and I can give my wineries frontline information on what’s happening in the vineyard and on the vine.”

The true bottom line for the Buchers, not surprisingly, is how the business is helping build a new family legacy.

“The wine brand was a way to bring Diane and my stepkids into a business of our own,” said John. “It brings the talents of the whole family into a product we are very proud of.”

In 2006, Antink began working at J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, where he has been white winemaker since 2013. He has spearheaded a number of new wines for J. Lohr, including the J. Lohr Highlands Bench Chardonnay and the J. Lohr Estates Flume Crossing Sauvignon Blanc.

“White wines are more fragile than reds, so they take more care,” he said. “It’s more difficult to get those varietal aromatics and flavors from the grapes and preserve that character. The focus on white wines has greatly advanced my knowledge; there’s always something to learn, and we’re always experimenting, looking for something new and better.”

Antink maintains his connection with UC Davis and the Alumni Wine Program out of a continuing interest to learn, hone, and develop his craftsmanship and winemaking. The Alumni Wine Program also serves as an additional venue to show off the best examples of his work from J. Lohr. He is a regular attendant at annual events like Wine Flavor 101 and Recent Advancements in Viticulture and Enology (RAVE). For Antink, the

value of these events lies not just in the information imparted, but also in the interactions they enable between winemakers.

“It’s a very open industry when it comes to sharing information. You always meet new people at the events, and a lot of these folks were my classmates at UC Davis,” he said.

“We do a lot of precise, technical stuff at J. Lohr, and getting a chance to do that in a lab while I was in school was really valuable.”

“I’ve always been interested in helping others, in doing the greater good,” said Bishop-Green. “As a UC Davis alumna and life member, I feel like I’ve reaped all the benefits and

When this opportunity came around, I couldn’t pass up working for such a wonderful organization as CAAA.” After graduating from UC Davis with a bachelor’s degree in communications and sociology, Bishop-Green worked at the UC Davis Athletics Department where she collaborated with students and interns on event planning and marketing initiatives to

Last fall, the magazine’s 2015 “Best Colleges” report puts UC Davis as ninth

among the nation’s public universities and 38th overall, up one place from the year before. UC Davis consistently performs strongly on national and international college rankings.

Other USNWR rankings UC Davis School of Law jumped five slots to rank 31st overall. The law school also placed 23rd in the U.S. News diversity rankings, one of the few law schools to rate in the top 40 for both overall quality and diversity.
