Before the big weekend Resume Writer (CPRW), is the founder of Collegial Services, a consulting and recruiting firm that specializes in launching careers. As a business leader with some of the largest international staffing firms, Reshwan has interviewed, placed and hired thousands of people across a broad spectrum of companies, industries and functional areas. Read her tips for networking in the article on page 6.

A CAAA member since 1993, Reshwan is also an active Junior Achievement instructor, volunteer teacher and mentor in her community. She has been honored as a Professional Business Woman of the Year by the American Business Women’s Association and has served as a member of the Regents Scholarship Committee at University of California, Davis. Reshwan graduated Phi Beta Kappa and as a Regents Scholar from UC Davis with a degree in international relations. She lives with her husband and three children in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Solar panels A roof-mounted 9.5kW solar photovoltaic system supplies all of the energy for heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, hot water, appliances and consumer loads, in addition to charging

UC Davis has partnered with Honda to build a positivenet-energy prototype house that not only generates its own power from on-site renewable sources, it charges an electric car and waters the garden, too. The Honda Smart Home US, opened in March 2014, is the latest innovation at West Village, the largest planned zero-net-energy housing development in the United States.

The combined energy used to power homes and light-duty vehicles contributes to approximately 44 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. The Honda Smart Home’s energy management system and energy-efficient design uses less than half of the energy of a similarly sized new home in the Davis area for heating, cooling and lighting. The home is also three times more water-efficient than a typical U.S. home, and recycles its own graywater for its xeriscaped garden.

The fully furnished home, which comes equipped with a Honda Fit EV battery electric vehicle, will serve as a residence for a member of the UC Davis community, whose selection will be announced this fall (visit CAAA’s Facebook page to learn who wins).

The home will also function as a living laboratory where the company, along with researchers from UC Davis and Pacific Gas and Electric Co., will evaluate how to adapt the cutting-edge technologies to mainstream use.

UC Davis and Honda partnered on the innovative design to address the challenges in the United States’ transportation and energy sectors. California’s Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan, for example, sets a goal for all new homes to be zero net energy beginning in 2020. Through a combination of advanced technology integration, energy efficiency measures and sustainable design techniques, Honda Smart Home surpasses that goal by producing more power than it consumes.

“In West Village, UC Davis made a commitment to build zero net energy housing and gave our research center the goal of creating the first university hub to focus and energy and transportation research,” said Dan Sperling, director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Davis.

First, pay it forward The foundation of successful networking is an attitude geared toward helping others, without quid pro quo expectations.

“In a world that is filled with generic and mass appeal marketing, making a unique connection is extremely valuable,” says ROBIN RESHWAN ’92, who is a contributing blogger for U.S. News: On Careers. “One of the best ways to distinguish yourself is to start a relationship through giving, as opposed to taking. People like to work with others that they know and trust. The relationships built through ‘giving back’ tend to be more substantial and longer lasting than those that are just one-sided.”

Be sure to balance extending yourself to others with being realistic about how much time you have to commit, so that you have a reputation as someone who always delivers. A good rule of thumb is to estimate how much time you’ll need to sufficiently follow through, then build twice that amount into your time management system.

Casting a wide net Reshwan emphasizes the importance of keeping an open mind toward who might be a part of your network.

“Cast a wide net when networking since you never know who may be that key connector between you and your next opportunity,” says Reshwan, a CAAA member since 1993.

“Remember to have a clear, concise explanation of what you are looking to accomplish to make it easy for your connection to be of assistance. Have a ‘personal commercial’ that explains who you are and where you are looking to go.”

There’s no place more welcoming to start practicing your personal commercial than a CAAA event. With seven academic chapters and school associations, 11 special interest groups, 24 regional networks in the U.S., international networks in 20 countries and a program exclusively for alumni wine professionals, there are numerous events to choose from. Everyone is professionally judged on his or her online presence, like it or not, and making sure a Google search of your name makes a good impression involves more than adjusting your Facebook privacy settings. Digital portfolios aren’t just for those working in visual fields or with HTML skills — everyone can share professional or academic projects online. Sharing the best examples of your work enhances your credibility and makes you far more memorable.

Portfolium, a new social network with a private UC Davis network, offers a robust digital portfolio to complement your LinkedIn profile. All students and alumni are welcome to join the UC Davis network, and may request hands-on training from Portfolium ambassadors on how to craft and leverage a polished profile (email info@ portfolium.com to schedule office hours or a workshop).

Think of your professional social media profiles as dynamic visual aids, not merely electronic resumes.

Take advantage of the rich media options on LinkedIn or Portfolium and practice aloud pithy descriptions of the projects you’ve uploaded. Then bring your tablet or smartphone to your next interview and illustrate your answers (try the SOAR format) with relevant projects.

The continuing education edge The benefits of continuously honing and growing your skillset are manifold, including helping you re-engage with your current position or preparing you for a new challenge. Besides being crucial to staying competitive in the job market, it is an ideal opportunity to develop meaningful connections over time with fellow participants.

“All successful businesses strive to keep in front of their customers’ needs and competitors’ service offerings to keep their companies relevant. Smart employees should do the same,” says Reshwan. “You are the manager of your career.

Make it actionable If making time for networking seems impossible, remember that it can be as simple as having coffee with a fellow Aggie. Pick one or two small goals and focus on the benefits of networking: new connections and serendipitous circumstances.

“Networking connects you to so many new people and opportunities,” says COOKIE LEE (DEBRA LEE ’78), founder and former CEO of her eponymous multi-milliondollar jewelry company. “The most important thing is to just start! Network wherever you go. Be prepared by being open, being excited about meeting new people, and having your business card ready. Focus on what you can give to other people, and it will come back to you a bazillion-fold.”

• Did you know LinkedIn can be used as a database?

Explore the different ways you can drill down into the Aggie network using the “Find Alumni” tool (the third option under “Connections” in the top left toolbar).

• Portfolium offers the functionality to integrate your profiles: your Portfolium account’s dashboard can link to your LinkedIn account, and you can add Portfolium’s thumbnail URL to your LinkedIn summary.

• Strike a balance between industry-specific keywords and active verbs in your position descriptions. Crossreference your content against LinkedIn’s annual blog post about the most overused buzzwords.

• Join and actively participate in relevant LinkedIn groups. Block off weekly or biweekly time to participate in discussions and/or answer questions to build public awareness of your expertise.

• Evaluate profiles that impress you. What is appealing about them? What elements can you adopt and personalize?

• Go with your gut. There are countless tips to consider, but ultimately your online presence should accurately reflect your values, goals and unique professional persona.

Ramak, a sales enablement lead for a high tech firm in the San Francisco Bay Area, recalls that alumni participation was influential to them as students, and enriched their campus experience.

“We had mentors,

friends, donors—a lot of different alumni who positively impacted our lives as we were going through school. We feel compelled to do the same for students who are on campus now,” he said.

Garrison Award scholarship in recognition of her campus leadership. After graduating, she spent a year working with CAAA programs.

Then the travel bug bit her again, and Bradley spent five months backpacking across Australia, New

Aggie adventurer comes back to campus to engage young alumni Zealand and Southeast Asia.

Before her sojourn, however, Bradley spent a year in San Francisco trying her hand at different jobs, networking with UC Davis alumni and serving on the leadership board of CAAA’s San Francisco Network.

“I organized a young alumni career seminar, helped with their annual event at The Press Club and attended community service events,” said Bradley. “It was nice when I moved to a city as large as San Francisco that I could get involved right away in something that I was already familiar with, and the CAAA network let me continue to establish my network outside of work.”

Her volunteer experience, coupled with her student leadership activities, proved the perfect preparation for her current position as Student and Young Alumni Program Coordinator. Already she has helped invigorate the Los Angeles chapter with two young alumni events and will soon be taking the lead on helping some of CONTINUES ON PAGE 24

a career in investing as a means to achieve wealth—but not the kind typically associated with Certified Financial Planners. For Jeff and his wife Judy, true abundance means sharing the bounty of James Family Cellars with friends and family.

“After graduating, I spent about 10 years of working in agriculture for other people,” said James. “I decided to pursue my interest in investing so that I could afford a farm of my own. I had to leave agriculture in order to get back into it on my own terms. And every gathering around the table with our family, friends, food and our wine makes it all worthwhile.

Working on ranches during his high school years sparked James’ passion for working with the land and fueled his determination to enter the industry. It was only when he and Judy began growing grapes on their farm and his brotherin-law shared his passion for hobby winemaking that James began dabbling with “mostly mad scientist stuff in the garage.” The evolution into a gold-medal-winning professional winery was driven by their commitment to low-impact farming.

Thai style pumpkin soup with coconut milk and lime-cilantro topping Kristine’s version of a traditional autumn dish—pumpkin soup—pairs perfectly with a chardonnay.

Makes 6-8 servings 2 T. butter 2 T. mild olive oil 1 small onion, finely diced 1 c. celery, thinly sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 quarts chicken broth (use homemade for best flavor) 2 T. lemongrass, thinly sliced from the base end 1 T. fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced 3 T. green curry paste 3 T. nam pla (Thai fish sauce) ¼ t. cayenne powder (or to taste) 1 can (29 oz.) pureed pumpkin or 16 oz. pureed butternut squash 1 can (14 oz.) coconut milk (light is okay; set aside ¼ c. of the coconut milk for the soup topping) Juice from half a lime 2 c. cooked chicken, cut into small dice (optional) Salt and pepper (to taste)

Heat the butter and olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the onion and the celery and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are limp.

When onions and celery are limp add the garlic, lemon grass and ginger and curry paste. Cook an additional minute or two or until ginger, lemongrass, etc. are aromatic. Do not let garlic brown. Put the onion mixture into the pitcher of a blender and add approximately one cup of the chicken broth. Process the onion mixture until it is completely pureed, then pour it into a large soup pot. Add remaining broth and stir to blend. Bring the soup to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer 20 minutes. Add the nam pla, cayenne, pumpkin OR butternut squash puree and remaining coconut milk; stir to blend.

Allow the soup to heat but not boil; add the lime juice, the chicken if using, and salt and pepper to taste. Pour servings of fully heated soup into soup bowls, garnish with a large spoonful of LimeCilantro Topping. Serve immediately. Hot basmati or jasmine rice or toasted Tandoori bread is a good side dish with this soup.

Lime-cilantro topping Makes about 2/3 cup 1 c. cilantro leaves (lightly packed), cleaned 1 T. scallions, thinly sliced Juice from half a lime ½ t. salt ¼ c. coconut milk

Place all ingredients into a blender or the bowl of a mini food processor. Process until pureed. Set aside in a small bowl or wrap and refrigerate for a day or two.

You may not know what your career could be outside of the U.S, but you should want to develop yourself.

For me personally, establishing a career outside of the U.S. was really about developing a skillset that works overseas. You need to believe in yourself and you need to continue to reinvent yourself. Because the culture you are living in overseas is different than your own, you must be adaptable.

“I’m excited about the possibility of connecting recent grads with alumni further established in their careers.

We already have great programs for current students to connect with alumni, and I would like to extend those opportunities to recent graduates as well,” said Bradley. “I really believe the Aggie network is a resource. When you stay connected, others and UC Davis all benefit from sharing information and connections.”

Bradley lives in downtown Sacramento, where she plays in a softball league and enjoys all that Sactown offers. She also loves her three dogs, two Corgis named Louie and Penny Lane and Maggie Mae the chocolate Lab, whom she walks whenever she visits them at her parents’ home in Sonoma.

“It was an eye-opener seeing how alumni of all ages are so committed to keeping UC Davis strong and growing. The event reminded us what a great alumni community we have—Aggies are so sincere,” said Kristine. “It’s an honor to be associated with such intelligent, successful people, and we have high hopes for continuing the partnership.”

BOARD’S EYE VIEW New Board Leadership

he Cal Aggie Alumni Association has elected RAMAK SIADATAN as president and DEBBY STEGURA as vice president of its board of directors for 2014-2016.

Siadatan assumed the office effective July 1. A CAAA Life Member since 2005, he has served on several committees, including chairing the Chapters Committee, and as vice president of programs. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural and managerial economics in 1999, and an MBA in 2006, both from UC Davis. Siadatan is a learning and development professional, and works for Guidewire Software Inc. as its sales enablement training manager. He lives in Roseville with his wife, ALLISON ‘03, and their children. Read more about Siadatan on page 18.

RAMAK SIADATAN Stegura assumed the office effective July 1. She has served CAAA in numerous capacities through the years, including chairing the development committee and spearheading fundraising for and installation of CAAA’s Donor Wall. Stegura graduated with honors from UC Davis in 1979 with degrees in political science and mass communication. She received her juris doctorate degree from the University of Southern California in 1984 where she was an editor of the law review. Stegura practiced business litigation law for many years, most notably at the former Alschuler, Grossman, and Pines in Los Angeles. Stegura holds elective office as a board trustee of the Palos Verdes Library District. She lives in Rolling Hills Estates with her husband Larry. They have three grown children. Stegura will assume the president role at CAAA in 2016.

Eadie oversees CAAA’s engagement efforts with the more than 230,000 alumni of the University of California, Davis, and coordinates the efforts of more than 40 alumni chapters and networks throughout the world.

Eadie joined CAAA in 2006 as the membership manager and became the director of programs in JANE EADIE 2008. Prior to CAAA, Eadie spent nine years with Kelly Services, a personnel company, where she directed business operations for the Canadian national service department.

Gould comes to UC Davis from UC Berkeley, where she’s been an administrator in the athletics department since 2001, most recently as the deputy director of athletics, chief of staff. She has 25 years of experience overall TERESA GOULD in intercollegiate athletics, media, television and higher education.

She started on August 18 and is responsible for managing CAAA’s programs and operating budget; implementing strategic objectives related to member acquisition and retention, corporate relations and sponsorships; and overseeing CAAA’s marketing, communications and business development strategies.
