hether you travel eight miles or 8,000 miles to attend UC Davis, you want to make sure you are making the right decision for your college experience. This year, the Cal Aggie Alumni Association and Undergraduate Admissions partnered together on a number of opportunities to make that happen. CAAA staff including Ginger Welsh, international alumni programs officer, Becky Heard, director of parent programs and Jennifer Thayer, associate director of programs invited admitted students, alumni and parents of current students to come together between April through September to attend a series of Admitted More than 100 people attended the UC Davis Alumni event at the Greek Embassy in Washington D.C. this past April.

Student Events and Send-off Receptions.

In Washington D.C., Chancellor Katehi traveled to the Greek Embassy in April and hosted an event for alumni and friends of campus. Admitted students and their families were also invited and more than 100 people attended. It was an ideal opportunity for admitted students to talk with alumni about their time at UC Davis, and learn about transitioning back to life in Washington D.C. and being part of the D.C. Alumni Chapter. The alumni in Washington D.C. have a very active chapter with many programs throughout the year including museum tours,

Also in April, Welsh traveled to India and visited admitted students in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. For the first time, events were hosted that brought parents of current students and alumni together with these future international students and their parents. Most events ended up lasting 3-4 hours as the students had many questions and the alumni and parents present graciously spent many hours answering all their concerns and questions.

Heard traveled across the state this fall to host a number of Send-Off receptions for our incoming class of 2017. Her Parent’s Council members have been

huge supporters of these and even hosted some of the receptions in their homes.

An international Send-Off event took place in London on August 31. All admitted undergraduate, graduate and study-abroad students were invited to meet for lunch and have a chance to talk with alumni who reside in Europe.

Partnering with our alumni and parents at these events for admitted students has been an exciting new way we engage our alumni from UC Davis around the world.

Incoming students and their parents want to hear from people who have been in their shoes and why Davis was the right place for them — no one can tell that story better than our alumni.

A

fter commencement, most graduating students will start looking for a job or begin graduate school in the fall.

However, for 20 UC Davis seniors, the next chapter of their lives began with a three-week trip to Europe.

Aggie Adventure’s annual graduation trip spanned nine countries in 24 days and featured some of Europe’s most famous attractions. I had the opportunity to join these new alums, along with 20 UCLA alumni, and an alumna from UCSB, Cal Poly and Notre Dame de Namur, on their journey across Europe.

W

e began our journey in London, where we received a walking tour by a local guide.

Our tour highlighted Big Ben and Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and an unexpected encounter with the mayor of London. In addition to these sites, in my free time, I was able to explore St. Paul’s Cathedral, view art at the National Gallery and British Museum, and take a ride on the London Eye. From London, we traveled across the English Channel to France and, after a short drive, arrived at our next destination, Paris.

Our two days in Paris included a 600-stair climb to the top of the Eiffel Tour, a stroll through the Louvre and D’Orsay Museums, a peek in the Notre Dame Cathedral and a quick jaunt to the Palace of Versailles. One of the highlights of the trip was picnicking on the Seine, near the Notre Dame Cathedral, and watching the small boats navigate the river. It was a serene experience, being in the middle of a large, bustling city and feeling at peace.

ext, we headed to Amsterdam with a quick stop in Brussels for some Belgian waffles.

During our two days in Amsterdam, we visited the Anne Frank House and took a short bike ride through the countryside. As UC Davis graduates, we felt a sense of pride in our expertise in biking and we laughed as we watched our UCLA counterparts attempt to master their technique.

Our next destination was Germany, where we made stops in the Cologne, Rothenberg, Heidelberg, and Munich. Through our German travels, we saw everything from one of Germany’s oldest

fter a few days of relaxation in Austria, the whirlwind continued as we headed to Venice, Italy. Although we only stayed in the city for a few hours, we enjoyed delicious gelato, walked through San Marco’s square, and took a gondola ride through the city’s maze of canals.

After our quick stay in Venice, we continued on to Florence, where we once again received a guided city tour. We saw the Ponte Vecchio — one of Florence’s most famous bridges, the Duomo — an all-marble church, a recreation of the statue of David and the Uffizi Gallery. On our second day in Florence, a small group of us took an excursion out of the city to Tuscany. While there, we visited the winery where Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa and saw the original backdrop for the portrait. After seeing the Mona Lisa while in Paris, we appreciated visiting the place where Da Vinci painted the masterpiece.

fter saying goodbye to our new friends, we traveled to Austria. We made a stop in Salzburg to see Mozart’s birthplace and to visit some of the sets for “The Sound of Music.” After a few hours of exploring Salzburg, we continued on to the alpine village of Annaberg and nestled into our hotel in the Austrian Alps. During our three days in Annaberg, we had the opportunity to hike, whitewater raft, and mountain bike. We celebrated the Fourth of July by singing the Star Spangled Banner and spending time together as a group.

fter returning to Florence and spending one more night in the city, we traveled to Rome. As with most of the cities we went to, our first night in Rome flew by. Within a matter of hours we saw the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, a Roman aqueduct, and the Trevi Fountain. Open a Door for a Student in Need

F

rom September 18th through the end of October, UC Davis along with the entire University of California system is participating in a new crowdfunding initiative that will help raise scholarship funds for UC students in need.

Through the program, called Promise for Education, students, alumni, faculty, friends, and family can make a promise (run a marathon, volunteer at a homeless shelter, wear flippers

for a week — anything!) at PromiseForEducation.org in exchange for donations to support UC undergraduate scholarships. Promisers share their promises with their networks, asking for contributions toward their promises.

Once the crowdfunding goal has been met, the promiser fulfills his or her promise and shares proof. Money raised will help fund scholarships across the University of California system. For more information, visit the program website.

or the fourth consecutive year, UC Davis is ranked among the top 10 public U.S. universities by U.S. News & World Report.

The Aggies are ranked ninth among the nation’s top public universities and 39th among national universities overall in the magazine’s most recent “Best Colleges” rankings. UC Davis’ College of Engineering is ranked 32nd, based on a national reputational survey of deans and department chairs in engineering programs across the country (undergraduate engineering and business programs are the only rankings by discipline in the “Best Colleges” publication). As part of this ranking, UC Davis is also acknowledged for being a leader in graduating its students with the least amount of debt.

UC Davis also moved up from 100th to 85th spot in the QS World University Rankings. Linda P.B. Katehi, chancellor of UC Davis, said the rankings indicate the university’s growing international stature. “The rankings recognize that UC Davis is one of the best universities in the world,” she said.”We provide a world-class education, and our faculty are among the leaders in their fields.”

The QS World University Rankings also named UC Davis among the top 50 universities in the world for the “natural sciences” and “medical and life sciences” disciplinary categories. This accolade follows QS World University Rankings from May 2013, in which UC Davis was named the No. 1 university in the world for teaching and research in the area of agriculture and forestry.

he term “homecoming” often conjures up images of football games, cool evenings and spirited celebration. As UC Davis’ 2013 Homecoming approaches, we want to remember what it means to be an Aggie and to look ahead to this year’s celebration.

October 11 marks the 101st anniversary of our first

Pajamarino, which began when students sneaked out of the residence halls to meet alumni returning by train for Homecoming. Since those early beginnings, Pajamarino has become a trademark tradition on our campus, rallying alumni, students and community members together to experience an event unlike any other university.

Led by alumni members of the Cal Aggie Marching Banduh!, this year’s participants will parade from Central Park to the Davis Amtrak Station in their pajamas as our Aggie ancestors did back in 1912.

Profile Karen Collins

K

AREN COLLINS has recently been hired to serve as the new Director of Business Development at CAAA. She is no stranger to CAAA, having spent the last three years managing membership programs for alumni, parents and current undergraduates.

A 2003 graduate and life member of CAAA, Collins began her career as the marketing assistant for ICA Athletics at UC Davis before joining Copia: The American Center for Wine Food and Art, created by Robert Mondavi in 2004.

“Since my first visit to campus in 2000, the university quickly became a special part of my life that I’m proud to still be connected with today,” says Collins.

“I’m thrilled to be moving to a new opportunity at CAAA. I look forward to expanding our Aggie Adventures travel program and working with UC Davis alumni in the wine industry to build the UC Davis Alumni Wine Program, formerly known as “Vintage Aggies.” This program will continue to offer exclusive Vintage Aggies Wine Tastings

Collins lives with her husband in the bay area with their two dogs, Diesel and Sadie, and the newest addition, Pepper (the house cat). Her husband has quickly become a pseudo Aggie, joining CAAA as a life member in 2011. He even was involved in pulling the Student Alumni Association (SAA) Picnic Day float in the parade that same year.

Donald Lockhart

W

hen DONALD LOCKHART

came to UC Davis with Future Farmers of America for the first time in 1926, he had no idea that this Army housing field would one day be his very own alma mater. Starting as a non-degree student, Lockhart says he didn’t know what he wanted to do.

However, since his parents really encouraged education he figured he would go to the place he fell in love with years prior.

First moving to Davis in 1936, Lockhart recalls staying at University Hotel on B Street. Lockhart says, “I was walking around campus and went by the sheep barn where George Phillips offered to let me stay there.

Later I worked for the ranch

division. It was a huge farm and there were about 20 workers so I earned my keep by keeping the farm clean and working on the farm.”

Earning his way through school by working at the farm department, Don recalls, “They even had me handwatering the trees near Putah Creek which, at that time, was just a dry river bed.”

Lockhart didn’t just work for the farm department, he was a jack-of-all-trades helping “close the gates to the farm, lighting the infirmary fire for the dead animals, pulling weeds, picking melons and getting materials for the blowfly population to pollinate the onions.”

While Lockhart recalls not having much money in the

years before graduation, he does recall the fun of going to a baseball game and visiting the sheep barn, as well as “the quality teachers like Hart and Miller in the agriculture department.”

After living at the ranch for the maximum two years allowed, Lockhart joined Beta Phi in 1940 and stayed with the fraternity on B Street.

That is where he was when war broke out. “We were all in the family room of the fraternity house and I was reading the paper, when we heard on the radio that Pearl Harbor had been bombed.

A month after getting a degree in Animal Science in 1942, Lockhart joined the United States Army. After getting out in 1945, he looked to his alma mater for help with a job. He talked to one of his professors who told him to go to General Mills Feed and Grain where he worked for four years.

Later, Lockhart would work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 34 years until his retirement in 1982.

After nearly a century of life, Lockhart now resides in Davis with his wife and has three adult sons: John, Donald and Brian.

Profile Karl Antink

A

s the white winemaker for J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, KARL ANTINK

combines a commitment to the hands-on approach that defines great winemaking, with a comprehensive understanding of viticulture and fermentation science.

Raised in Pleasant Hill, Calif., Antink’s road to becoming a winemaker grew from a simple interest in home beer brewing.

In 1993, after graduating from the UC Davis Master Brewers Extension Program, Antink decided to combine his passion for the art of fermentation with his growing love of wine. After pursuing additional studies at Diablo Valley College, Antink earned a degree in fermentation science from UC Davis.

In 1997, Antink began his career in the wine industry as the enologist for St. Helena’s Folie à Deux, where he worked with an array of varietals, and in January of 1999, was promoted to assistant winemaker. In this role, Antink supervised all of the winery’s day-to-day operations. Following his time at Folie à Deux, Antink was named winemaker for the family-owned Von Strasser Winery in Calistoga.

As Von Strasser’s winemaker for the next five years, Antink guided production of the winery’s esteemed portfolio of premium wines, while managing both the vineyard and winery crews.

Eager to pursue new challenges, Antink joined J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines as assistant winemaker in 2006.

in Vatican City. After the tour, we explored the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel and the Coliseum. On our final night in Rome, we had our last meal as a whole group and said goodbye to some amazing new friends.

Twenty of us stayed and traveled to Greece, where we relaxed for three days on the island of Poros and experienced a day of exploring Athens. We enjoyed water sports and bike riding on the island and toured the Acropolis and the Olympic Stadium in Athens. After all the traveling and constant activity,

our journey had come to an end.

I’m glad that I was able to visit, experience, and learn so many different things in Europe.

Not only did I get to visit and experience new cultures and cities, I also met a diverse, wonderful group of people. Although we traveled with students from many different backgrounds, we all shared an incredible journey.

This trip positively impacted my personal growth and enriched my life significantly. I know I speak for my fellow travelers when I say this was the trip of a lifetime.

This year’s Homecoming game is not just about football either. The celebration will start much earlier when the Golden Society teams up with the alumni association for a VIP tailgate outside Aggie Stadium. Those alumni that graduated 50

years ago will be returning to campus throughout the year to celebrate their 50th anniversary at various events, culminating in a Golden Society Reunion celebration on Picnic Day Weekend.

At this year’s Homecoming, current Golden Society members will join 1964 graduates for an exclusive pregame experience. For those not yet celebrating a golden graduation, UC Davis Athletics will be hosting a number of pregame activities including the 2nd Annual Wine Tasting with the Aggies.

However you choose to participate, remember that Homecoming is about celebrating your alma mater and why it’s important to you. Join us this year and see what it’s all about.

The Cal Aggie Alumni Association Board of Directors has been very active in shaping the future structure of our organization that now serves 36,000 members and approximately 225,000 living alumni of UC Davis. As the alumni population continues to grow, the need for strategic communication practices has steadily increased. This past year, the board formed a Marketing and Communications (MARCOM) Committee to develop ways to make regional and demographic specific updates to our alumni. CAL AGGIE FAMILY CAMP

The board of directors has been exploring the possibility of a family camp in the Sierra Nevada for the past several months. An offer has been made on a piece of property that could lead to a permanent home for Aggies in the near future. The preferred site for the camp is off of I-80 between Sacramento and Truckee and will provide year-round activities for students by the year 2015. Stay tuned.

ABOUT THE CAAA BOARD

T

he Cal Aggie Alumni Association board of directors is a group of alumni volunteers who lead the organization in its service to UC Davis and its alumni.

Leadership provided by the board is essential to the successful implementation of programs designed to accomplish the alumni association’s mission: “To enrich the lives of alumni, students, families and friends worldwide, and develop lifelong ambassadors for UC Davis.”

The CAAA board of directors meets four times a year to establish policy, develop goals and objectives, assist with long-range planning, and monitor alumni association finances. The board consists of a president, vice president, and up to 23 directors-at-large. Board members are elected for two-year terms with a three-term limit and participation is open to all CAAA members.

Board meetings are usually held on campus; however, one meeting each year may be held at an off-campus site within California.
