STUDENTS STUDENT LED PHILANTHROPY PROJECT BUILDS COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITY ON CAMPUS

no secret that most students are struggling to keep up with increased tuition fees. With the current economic troubles of the state, not only has the cost of attending a university risen, but so has the cost of everyday living expenses. In response to these critical conditions, a group of UC Davis students

helping STUDENTS

have created We Are Aggie Pride; a student philanthropy initiative designed to provide emergency funds to undergraduate students with short-term financial trouble. “When I have run into unexpected financial crises in college, I felt like I was hurdling uncontrollably downward. Yet, my safety net—my family—has always caught me before I hit the

ground,” says We Are Aggie Pride Director of External Outreach, Quinn Morgan ’12. “I can only imagine the fear that students without that support structure in place must feel when they are struck with an unmanageable financial blow.”

The premise of the program is to encourage students to show their Aggie pride by making a donation

to the university-wide Students Helping Students Fund. The hope is that this fund will help students in need and foster a culture of student philanthropy on campus. The program also supports the objectives of the Campaign for UC Davis, a university-wide initiative to raise $1 billion through the support of 100,000 donors. Once the student

has donated, they will be treated like any other donor to campus, beginning what the student founders hope will be a life-long relationship with campus.

Zena Brown ’12, director of the program explains, “We Are Aggie Pride is close to my heart because I noticed a need on campus and felt like this program could be a part of the solution. By

participating in We Are Aggie Pride, students demonstrate their belief that UC Davis is a valuable institution and will be a contributor to their individual futures.”

The funds that are collected are disbursed through an application and review process led by a committee of students with support from the UC

The only requirement to be eligible for an award is to have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Dream Act, an alternative financial aid form for undocumented students, application on file.

Beyond that, applications are assessed on the basis of the student’s immediate need, determined by the information in their FAFSA and other financial assistance they may have previously

received. Sarah Hoover ’12, award liaison for We Are Aggie Pride, will assist in the process of selecting the award recipients with the help of a student committee and with support from the UC Davis Financial Aid Office. “There are so many performancebased scholarships available, which are great, but I feel that they sometimes send the message that a student isn’t worth supporting unless he or she is a superhuman,” Hoover says. “We can’t all be the best though, especially when concerns like working

three jobs and paying rent distract us.” The amount awarded to recipients is not a loan and does not need to be paid back. For this reason, contributions from student, alumni and friends are essential for success.

“Unless the state begins to reinvest in higher education, I believe that the future of the university will depend upon greater philanthropy.

This will require the generous support of future alumni,” explains Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Fred Wood.

The road to the launch of We are Aggie Pride was anything but simple. The program is modeled after Kansas State University’s student-led, nationally recognized fundraising campaign, K-State Proud.

Cal Aggie Student Alumni Association (SAA) board members first heard of K-State Proud at the annual CASE leadership conference held by the Affiliated Student Advancement Programs in the summer of 2010 and came back to UC Davis with the hopes of creating a similar program. With the support of the executive director of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, vice chancellor of student affairs and vice chancellor of development, the idea of the program slowly transformed into reality. “Starting the program was challenging at times, but also really exciting,” Brown recalls.

After collaborating with Advancement Services and University Development to build the giving site, donations started rolling in. The lead

donors to the program include the Associated Students of UC Davis and the board of directors of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, the Student Alumni Association and Picnic Day as well as various student clubs. One of the last steps was securing corporate sponsors that include West Village and various campus partners who are

Although it is still in its early stages, the committee expects that We Are Aggie Pride will successfully follow in the footsteps of K-State Proud, which raised more than $450,000 in its first five years. The UC Davis students’ intent is to raise enough funds during the first month of the We Are Aggie Pride campaign to begin to offer awards to students in spring quarter.

very UC Davis memory that REGGIE HIGASHI ’97

recalls starts and ends with Aggie pride. This comes as no surprise since Reggie immersed himself into all that embodied the UC Davis spirit during his four years as an undergraduate.

“Being involved with student activities, the Spirit Squad and various internships, I can say that it’s welcoming to know that you have a place to be proud of,” he says.

Even after graduating, Reggie never let UC Davis get too far out of reach. Not only has he made it to 18 straight Homecoming games, but makes an effort to attend other annual events such as the Causeway Classic football game and Picnic Day. Because he cheered for the UC Davis basketball and football teams during his time as a student,

Reggie pursued a career in rehabilitation after graduating.

Here, he helps patients who are recovering from various heart problems. In addition to this, Reggie works as an adjunct professor at American River College teaching human anatomy and physiology.

Besides keeping busy with these two professions, he also finds time to teach CPR and first aid classes.

In 2001, Reggie acted as the assistant coach for the UC Davis Stunt and Cheer Team.

Reminded of his experiences as a former member of the team, he found himself inspired to get his friends involved in the sport again.

This prompted him to become involved with the Cal Aggie Alumni Association.

After becoming a life member of CAAA in 2003, he decided to start the UC Davis Alumni Spirit Squad Chapter.

“This was an opportunity to stay connected with old teammates and have a vehicle to connect them to Davis in an organized way,” Reggie explains. His dedication to staying in touch with his old teammates as well as the campus did not end there. He makes an effort to attend any CAAA events that are in the area and has

Reggie currently lives in Elk Grove, California with his wife, Erica Higashi ’97, and their children.

he Cal Aggie Alumni Association is happy to welcome their first International Alumni Programs Officer, GINGER WELSH. In this position, Ginger will work to coordinate communication and activities for our international alumni to build our worldwide alumni network.

The position will work to manage existing international volunteer leaders, identify and orient new leaders, increase

awareness of chapters and network opportunities among alumni internationally and foster improved connections between UC Davis, the Cal Aggie Alumni Association and alumni, resulting in growth in event participation and engagement.

NO STRANGER TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA

After graduating from UC Davis in 1995, Ginger soon found herself back in the UC system working at UC Santa

T Cruz. In 2003, she returned to her alma mater. At UC Davis she worked for the law school for four years as well as in the student housing department for another four.

Ginger reflects on what has kept her at Davis for the past nine years. “I like the students and people that come to Davis,” she says. “I have worked at private, public, large and small universities; UC Davis has the best mix of students, faculty and staff.”

After attending graduate school in South Carolina, Ginger obtained an internship in Alaska. This was not the end of her traveling experience.

She has also been to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Europe and the Caribbean Islands. The farthest place and her most recent was a three week excursion to Cambodia and Thailand in December. When asked what her favorite place has been so far, she immediately chose Malta which is off the coast of Italy. “I have never had a tour guide that had so much pride in his country,” she recalls.

“Plus, Malta encompasses thousands of years of history in just one place.” Next on Ginger’s dream itinerary is an exploration of both Greece and Turkey.

he 2012 Alumni Awards Gala was held on February 4 at Jacuzzi Winery in Sonoma, California and honored seven distinguished alumni and friends of UC Davis.

and traveling, Ginger also likes spending time with her family. Something that most people don’t know about her is that she has a twin brother, Jim Welsh ’96. “We act and look nothing alike. I pass out at the sight of blood; he is a doctor,” she says. Her brother is currently living in Texas, while her sister Heather Welsh ’94 resides in Georgia.

Because of the distance, she greatly appreciates the times when her entire family can be together. Ginger also enjoys the company of her five nieces and nephews. “I love having the opportunity to experience and see the world through their eyes,” she says.

chose UC Davis because of its reputation for veterinary medicine. It was not until he began attending classes that he realized he simply did not have the stomach for blood. Instead of immediately deciding upon another career path, Jeff chose to explore a myriad of majors.

From landscape architecture to botany, Jeff had yet to find a major he felt comfortable in.

“I had always desired a career that allowed me to get outside, had a lack of routine, and was a marriage of art and science,” Jeff explains. It was with this in mind, that he eventually pursued viticulture and enology.

After graduating in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in plant science that emphasized

viticulture, Jeff obtained a job in wine sales for a distributor in the Sacramento region. Now, after 28 years

GRAD SPECIAL: $25 from staying involved with campus events, however. As a member of the UC Davis Alumni Wine Program, Jeff believes that campus seminars, meetings and events focusing on viticulture and enology help to keep him informed on the latest research and development in the industry.

Jeff is not the only one taking part in campus life though. J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines has partnered in research with UC Davis graduate students and professors, providing supplies, funding and support.

“I am particularly proud that we were very involved in the new teaching and research winery development,” Jeff states. “We were honored that the new fermentation room was named the J. Lohr

Vineyards & Wines Fermentation Room.”

Over the next few years, Jeff’s role with J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines will continue to progress so that he and the next generation of the Lohr family will eventually manage the business. Because of the time commitment that comes with his responsibilities, Jeff says that it is difficult to be as involved with CAAA as he would like to be. Despite this, “UC Davis will always have a special place in my heart,” he insists.
