First elected to the Calabasas City Council on March 5, 2013, David served as the city's mayor from 2014 to 2015. Re-elected to the council in 2018, he was installed for a second term through 2019. David took the oath of office a third time this past December at City Hall.
“I always strive to make a positive difference for all our residents and maintain our quality of life,” notes the mayor. “For almost 30 years, I've proudly lived, worked, and raised my family in Calabasas. I take great pride in having served the residents of our wonderful community on numerous city commissions and committees.”
David’s accomplishments can be witnessed in almost every aspect of the Calabasas community. He led the planning, design, and construction of the City Hall Civic Center, library, and Calabasas Senior Center. David also initiated the Veteran's Garden to support our residents that have served in the military and those that continue to serve our country. One of his most important accomplishments as mayor was signing the Gun Safety Ordinance, one of the first gun-safety measures in the state and country.
For our younger residents, David initiated the formation of Calabasas’s 1st Mayor’s Youth Council, led an anti- bullying campaign, and brought forward an anti-bullying ordinance that designated October as AntiBullying Awareness Month. Passionate to preserve our environment, David also initiated environmental reform as mayor, including the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge, a secondhand smoke ordinance, and the ban of single-use plastic straws, cutlery, and cups. He worked tirelessly to get funding and support to build the Lost Hills overpass and led our city’s efforts to recover $4 million in damages from the Woolsey Fire.
David’s goals for the upcoming term remain consistent: to keep our city safe and prepared for natural disasters and keep the city financially strong. He has also pledged to support our schools and students, advocate for our seniors, and continue to provide environmental leadership.
Mayor Shapiro received his bachelor of arts degree in history from UCLA and a doctor of law degree from the University of San Diego. He’s served clients throughout Southern California from his Calabasas law office for more than 35 years. David, along with his wife, Barbara; sons, Adam and Alex; and daughter, Samantha, also supports such philanthropic organizations as the Rotary Club of Calabasas, Habitat for Humanity, Cordasco Something Yellow Foundation, Loving Home Hospice for Children, and Golden West ALS. n
