Babies!

By Anna D. Guanche, MD Bella Skin Institute

Being the official beauty contributor at Calabasas Style Magazine for the past decade has given me the opportunity to share a lot of news, information, and trends as they relate to the beauty world. As I began to write my 60th article for the magazine, I was struck by how far we’ve come in the field of cosmetic dermatology and how quickly new products are expected to continue to change and improve our lives in the years to come.

One of the most shocking things I discovered occurred during the recent pandemic. During a time when people were forced to spend more time at home than ever before, I initially believed that my business, along with all other cosmetic practices, would suffer. Like many of my colleagues around the country, I thought that offering in-person services would see a dramatic decrease in patients, possibly forcing me to permanently close my doors. But that didn’t happen. On the contrary, cosmetic dermatology practices across the nation not only survived, but they thrived.

So, what happened? Some believe that the combination of increased stress levels, regular video and Zoom calls for work-from-home professionals, more free time, and a new YOLO (you only live once) attitude allowed more people to opt for cosmetic services as an outlet for stress relief and self-care. While I think that’s true, I think it may go deeper, so I’d like to share my thoughts about how my patients regard their visits to Bella Skin Institute.

First and foremost, I believe that people love to feel confident about their skin and bodies. While they may choose to forgo other types of purchases, the need and desire to feel good about themselves is non-negotiable. The boost in confidence and self-esteem from self-care dramatically impacts their ability to function at their highest level. Many of my patients attribute their positive outlook on the world and their success both personally and professionally to how they regard themselves. Basically, the old adage—“when you look good, you feel good"—is true, and it encourages people to be more inclined to go after all the many treasures that life has to offer.

Secondly, the pandemic forced everyone to engage in more screen time and that hasn’t decreased much even though many people have returned to their offices. Our society has permanently changed, I believe, and many will never return to a traditional work situation. FaceTime with friends and family, social media posting, and taking and sharing selfies and photos with friends is at an all- time high. With this increased focus on appearances, Americans of all ages are seeking out ways to improve their looks.

Thirdly, the products and techniques used for minimally invasive procedures have advanced significantly in the past decade. Advancements in technology include rejuvenation techniques such as radiofrequency microneedling, platelet-rich plasma treatments, biostimulatory injectables, adipose allograft matrix-based fillers, new neuromodulators (wrinkle relaxers), and more. Many of these injectable treatments have become mainstream, and the stigma has been removed. Many people who could “hide” behind their masks and work from home opted to try injectables and cosmetic procedures for the first time. Most of these procedures provide satisfying results and can be performed quickly—with patients getting in and out within 15 minutes.

Fourth, the “Covid 19” 19-pound weight gain was no joke, and people are seeking new and innovative ways to boost their workout regime and accelerate results. EMSculpt high-intensity electromagnetic muscle toning is a game changer to create flatter abs and a toned, perky booty. Tried-and-true Coolsculpting is great for reducing stubborn areas of fat, and Kybella deoxycholicacid injectable is perfect for small pockets of unwanted fat, such as the underarm “bra fat.” Body firming with radiofrequency or high-intensity-focused ultrasound are extremely popular for those complaining of loose skin when they finally do lose weight. These are all ways to promote body positivity, and though they do not substitute for healthy eating and exercise, they do inspire these habits through visible progress in the right direction.

We are coming out of some difficult times, and we’ve come a long way, Babies. This truly will be the second roaring twenties. We will not only survive but thrive in this era. Giving ourselves permission to look and feel our best is part of this new era, especially when we all remember to trust our skin to the best! n
