REDESIGNED TO EMPOWER

Empowering people begins with accessibility. And with our new NANOspikes® traction, we’re giving people more freedom to safely and confidently explore right in their neighborhoods. From walking the dog and shoveling the driveway to training for a marathon, the redesigned NANOspikes® provide improved traction, fit and comfort over the first-generation model, offering even more ways to get outside when ice and snow lingers.

IMPROVED TOE COMFORT

Inspired by the award-winning design of MICROspikes® and EXOspikes™ footwear traction, an integrated toe bail contours to variable footwear and reduces pressure points.

IMPROVED FIT + SECURITY

An all-new elastomer harness design with enhanced geometry provides an even more precise and comfortable fit on the latest running footwear, and an improved heel tab makes putting on and taking off a breeze.

IMPROVED TRACTION

A new concave tungsten carbide spike profile provides near-instant engagement on ice, while a stepped lug design and center plate ridges deliver enhanced grip on uneven ice and snow.

INDEPENDENTLY OWNED. ASSOCIATE LED.

From the early days in owner and founder Danny Giovale’s family workshop to a growing team of over 20 associates, some things at Kahtoola have remained the same. We’ve stayed true to who we are as an independently owned company, resisting pressures to sell and merge. Not only does this allow us to focus on a bottom line that’s defined as much as by positive impacts to people and communities as it is by financial success, it also allows us to operate with our unique associate model.

Across all areas of the business, Kahtoola associates function within a flat, lattice structure instead of a hierarchy of managers and supervisors, with an emphasis on collaboration and building consensus. While the process sometimes takes longer, the result is that more voices are heard and more ways of thinking are acknowledged, giving each associate a seat at the table. By empowering associates first, we build a foundation that enables us to empower others.

TRACTION

A STEP ABOVE

We’ll be the first to admit: you don’t always need traction in spring and summer. But for the times that you do, it can be even more crucial. High in the mountains and when late season snow lingers, having the right gear can sometimes mean the difference between a great day and a frustrating or even dangerous trek. From over 20 years of experience in designing footwear traction, we’ve learned a few lessons. And we’ve put those in practice to be a step above the rest.

THE ULTIMATE IN SAFETY

In 1993, Kahtoola owner and founder Danny Giovale had a near-death fall in the Italian Dolomites. He walked away unscathed, but recognized the dire consequences that could result from a single slip on snow. Since the Kahtoola Traction System (KTS) crampon was first created, we’ve stayed true to our roots in creating gear specifically for flexible footwear. And to this day, our hiking crampons enable safer and more accessible adventures for thru-hikers, backpackers, and nontechnical mountaineers alike.

SUSTAINABILITY

THE LONG ROAD AHEAD

Social and environmental responsibility have been at the heart of Kahtoola’s values since day one. It’s an ongoing journey that’s evolved with us as our company has grown, and we’ve taken steps both big and small to make a difference.

In 2022, we officially became carbon neutral, completing the rigorous task of calculating our scope 1 (direct), 2 (indirect) and 3 (supplier indirect) emissions and investing in sequestration projects through Native Energy to offset 100% of our footprint. In the long run, we know that offsetting doesn’t solve the issue, but in the short term, we believe it’s better to take action than to wait.

In the year ahead, we’re deepening our commitment to sustainability and reducing our footprint. The next step begins with mapping our entire supply chain – a formidable task – so we can start to investigate carbon reduction strategies at the supplier level. We’re also working to eliminate harmful PFAS or “forever chemicals” across our product lines and recently completed testing through an independent third party to identify all individual components with PFAS content. In the meantime, we’ve worked with Native Energy and Offsetra to offset 100% of our emissions for a second year, and we’ll keep taking meaningful steps on the road towards long-term sustainability.

UGANDA DIGESTERS PROJECT THROUGH NATIVE CARBON OFFSETS

This project helps farmers reduce methane emissions by installing 10,000 biodigesters that convert manure into biogas and fertilizers.

SKY WIND PROJECT IN MAHARASHTRA INDIA THROUGH NATIVE CARBON OFFSETS

Renewable energy generated by this project helps one of the world’s dirtiest electricity grids reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.

THE PACAJAI REDD+ PROJECT THROUGH OFFSETRA

By preventing unplanned deforestation of native forests in Brazil, this project allows forests to regenerate and avoid net emissions of 264,116 tCO2e over 40 years.
