Dear Kahtoola Dealer,
What a ride…and some of you have been along from the beginning!
A quarter century is a big milestone, and I couldn’t be more proud of the caring and skilled team of Associates dedicated to fulfilling our mission and purpose, and the excellent dealers who sell our products. Behind the award-winning products and giving back we do as a company, there is a long-term view at Kahtoola that makes us carefully consider the why, what and how for everything we do.
In 1999, I made a commitment. A commitment to try. A commitment to take action, to get over my fears and listen to what was welling up inside me (which was not to start a business). It was simply a desire to help people.
As a climber and a minimalist, I have always preferred a flexible hiking shoe over a heavy-duty boot as a means to travel efficiently and quickly through the mountains. At the time, crampons were designed around stiff hiking boots, but none that were compatible with lower volume, flexible footwear. This kind of traction did not exist back then.
In 1993, I slipped while descending from a long rock climb in the Dolomites on unforeseen snow and ice, fell hundreds of feet, and was very lucky to walk away with only minor injuries. This eventually resulted in the commitment to develop the KTS crampon designed specifically for flexible footwear, motivated by the idea of making us all more capable and agile in slippery conditions and reducing serious accidents.
Those early days were full of long days prototyping, learning new skills, solving a myriad of problems, and testing repeatedly to get the results I wanted. While we have significantly improved traction over the years and have judiciously introduced other categories, this unwavering focus persists even today. Our design team, with their abundant skill and knowledge, now surpasses my own expertise (though I can still excel in destroying prototypes, if need be).
Today, Kahtoola is a thriving business that celebrates the positive potential of people by making exceptional gear and giving back to make the world a better place. Thanks to all of you who support us by buying our products and learning about what makes us unique. We appreciate you!
Sincerely,
Danny Giovale

Kahtoola: “directly” in Tibetan. Why did this word become our name?
When Danny founded the company in 1999 in the family workshop (affectionately known as “The Shop”), he was venturing into unknown territory. He didn’t know anything about starting a business. But he knew that he wanted to make a difference in the world.
The Tibetan meaning of our name embodies more than just helping people go directly in the outdoors. It also embodies the idea of interconnectedness, of community, and of directly empowering people to help them reach their potential. And this idea begins right in our headquarters.
Within Kahtoola’s unique, flat lattice organizational structure, each and every Associate is given a seat at the table. Directives are swapped for building consensus. Every voice is given an opportunity to be heard. It doesn’t mean it’s easy, or that it’s always faster. But it’s our belief that people thrive when given the room to grow and the ability to have a say, directly.
Over the last 25 years, staying true to our values has guided every decision we’ve made. And every single Associate has been a part of this ongoing journey.

CONSERVATION
A MONUMENTAL WIN FOR THE GRAND CANYON
On August 8, 2023, President Joe Biden announced the designation of a Tribally led proposal to establish nearly 1 million acres of public lands surrounding Grand Canyon National Park as the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. In the Havasupai language, baaj nwaavjo means “where Indigenous people roam” and in the Hopi language, i’tah kukveni means “our ancestral footprints”.
The designation protects the lands for cultural and spiritual uses, but it also respects existing livestock grazing permits and preserves access for outdoor recreation, hunting and fishing. After years of efforts to protect the Grand Canyon from uranium mining, this is a significant milestone for Kahtoola. But, more importantly, it’s a historical watershed moment for the thirteen Tribal nations that comprise the Grand Canyon Tribal Coalition. Since time immemorial, the Indigenous peoples of the Southwest have lived and prayed in these canyons, and this monument is but another step in acknowledging the injustices of the past.
Kahtoola stands behind the Tribal nations in celebrating this achievement, but the work doesn’t stop here. We’ll continue to partner with Indigenous leaders, advocates, scientists and communities to protect endangered and significant places for both present and future generations.
PHOTO KENNETH J. HAMILTON | GRAND CANYON, AZ
“This designation marks a positive stride towards recognizing the importance of tending to our public lands and the well-being of the Native communities intertwined with them. We extend our wholehearted congratulations to the Tribes and their advocates for their dedicated efforts in pursuit of these goals. Let us now channel our energies into collaborative stewardship, which is essential for effectively overseeing our public lands, ultimately benefiting everyone involved.”

GIVING IS THE MEASURE OF OUR SUCCESS
Giving back to people and communities isn’t just lip service for us. It’s the core reason why Kahtoola exists as a business.
Since day one, we’ve held a fundamental understanding that our path is shared with others. That’s why our bottom line isn’t defined by profit, but by the fact that as we grow, so does our capacity to create positive change in the world.
From its early days, the Kahtoola Philanthropy Program has expanded in both scope of giving and purpose. Starting with a focus on the indigenous mountain cultures of Tibet and Nepal, we’ve broadened our giving to encompass indigenous cultures around the world, as well as outdoor community and environmental responsibility. Three times yearly, we award grants to organizations that are doing vital work in one or more of these areas.
For us, giving is the measure of our success. On the opposite page, learn more about highlighted partners in each area of focus who are making a difference.
PHOTO RUNNERS FOR PUBLIC LANDS
INDIGENOUS CULTURES
Elevate Nepal pursues long term projects that enhance education, public health and infrastructure to some of the most remote villages in Nepal. As a long time KPP recipient, Kahtoola has supported a diverse range of projects over the years, including the multi-year Makwanpur Water Project. Now in its third and final phase, the project will provide thousands of gallons of clean drinking water to the villages of Gopeghari, Deurali, and Dhusurang, and bring electricity and toilets to every home.
OUTDOOR COMMUNITY
Runners for Public Lands fosters inclusive running communities with an emphasis on climate action, equitable access to nature, and environmental stewardship. By offering financial and in-kind support through the Everyone Runs Project, RPL encourages runners from underrepresented communities to pursue their running goals, and in turn, inspire more runners to get out on the trails.
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Wilderness Volunteers is dedicated to stewarding America’s public lands through projects like trail maintenance and habitat restoration, while emphasizing Leave No Trace principles. With 38 volunteer projects in national parks, national forests and other public lands across the U.S., the Stewardship & Preservation of Public Lands Project spearheads crucial maintenance and conservation efforts to promote sustainability and enhance outdoor experiences for all.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
DESIGNED WITH INTENTION
We believe design is more than the means to a new product. It’s a practice in intentionality and purpose.
From the very beginning, we’ve chosen quality over quantity, resisting the pull of releasing products for the sake of novelty. From our community — customers, dealers, athletes, and our team — we gain valuable insights that continuously inform our approach. Through this process of vigorous validation and identifying genuine needs, we design products that are crafted with intention.
By creating durable, meaningful gear that’s used year after year, we ultimately reduce what goes in the landfill. It’s a simple philosophy, and it’s the guiding principle behind every product that we make.

HIKING CRAMPONS
BORN FROM EXPERIENCE
After experiencing a near-fatal fall in the Italian Dolomites in the early 90s, Kahtoola’s owner and founder, Danny Giovale, became acutely aware of the potential consequences of a simple slip on snow. Now, a quarter-century after the launch of the Kahtoola Traction System (KTS), our hiking crampons still stand as a direct link to our origins. They evoke the essence of the mountain environments that sparked the creation of a product and a company. Above all, their versatility and packability continue to shine, enabling safer and more accessible adventures on ice and snow.
