Live coral spawning broadcast TANYA MURPHY FOR the first time ever, the once-yearly spectacular underwater phenomenon of coral spawning will be broadcast live across Australia and the world from Moore Reef, just off Cairns.

REEF LIVE will air across two big nights on Friday December 4 at 8:30pm and Sunday December 6 at 8:40pm on ABC TV and iView and will draw attention to the amazing regenerative powers of the reef as well as the threats it faces and the people working to protect it.

In a world first, Port Douglas local marine biologist Dr Dean Miller will use a full-face diving mask equipped with a microphone to speak to audiences across the world and explain coral spawning in real-time as it is occurring at the Sunlover Reef

Freediver and marine scientist Lucas Handley, and shark advocate Madison Stewart will also do an underwater live cross from Heron Island, off the coast of Gladstone, while Dr Ann Jones, host of RN’s natural history program Off Track, will cover coral spawning in captivity by broadcasting from the world famous hitech Seasimulator in Townsville.

Thanks to the recently announced opening of Queensland borders, Television hosts Hamish Macdonald (Q+A, The Project), Brooke Satchwell (SeaChange) and Dr Jordan Nguyen (scientist and inventor) will present the show from a studio at Cairns Aquarium, joined by an array of experts looking at ways to preserve the natural and cultural

heritage for the reef for the future.

They will discuss Indigenous perspectives, conservation initiatives and how we can all get involved in citizen science projects.

Segments will also be shown about scientists who are capturing the spawn in a race against time to help regenerate the reef before it’s too late, and various other local organisations helping to preserve the reef.

Dr Miller said the show would be a huge boost in publicity for the reef, the region and for the people fighting to protect the reef. “ T h e spawning

event is a great opportunity to show to the nation and the world that the Great Barrier Reef is resilient, it’s spectacular, and it’s still here and worth fighting for,” he said.

“Cairns will be featured very prominently in the show, as well as segments about the Minke Whale Project, the Living Coral Biobank Project and lots of other exciting things people are doing to help the reef.

“It’s a really great way to get the whole nation and people online across the world to share in the wonder and excitement of the largest living structure on the planet.”

Corals across the 2400 kilometre length of

the Great Barrier Reef reproduce in a synchronized ‘mass spawning event’ every year, by releasing eggs and sperm into the water across a few nights, which always occur in spring after a full moon, and are also influenced by water temperatures, tides and salinity levels.

The world’s best coral scientists worked with the ABC to predict the spawning dates for the broadcast.

Karina Holden from show producers Northern Pictures, said it was an exciting challenge to take on, with more than 140 crew coming to Cairns two days in advance to prepare for the broadcast.

“Broadcasting live from underwater, at night time, on the Great Barrier Reef is a massive logistical challenge with high stakes, but we’ve been advised by the best experts, and we’re hoping it’ll be a bumper year for spawning and we’ll be there right in the thick of it,” she said.

The show is being produced in partnership with Screen Australia and Screen Queensland.

CHRISTMAS is the time to give back to your community and this silly season, a group of 30 local businesses are combining forces to give back in a massive way!

The businesses have donated $10,000, of which $5000 will go to a lucky winner, and the other $5000 will be donated to a local charity.

Practical solutions to youth crime NICOLE GIBSON Despite a lack of commitment from major parties at the recent Queensland State election, the Crime and Justice Action Group (CJAG) are pushing forward with their 12-point plan to tackle youth crime, with a focus on rehabilitation.

Section four of CJAG’s plan outlines a proposal to fund the construction of an education and employment sentencing academy and programs targeting serious youth offenders.

The academy will focus on identifying the cause of a youth’s offending and provide rehabilitation programs targeting mental health, nutrition and wellness, skills building and education, with pathways into employment, training and entrepreneurship.

Two local men who have experienced first-hand what a program of this nature can do are CJAG spokesperson Aaron McLeod and Almaden local Alwyn Lyall.

Both men were students at the Petford Training Academy, which the CJAG model is based on, and credit the program for giving them a solid foundation to become self-sufficient and create

success in their lives.

Mr McLeod said he was sent to Petford at 15 by his father after he decided to leave school.

“My father said if you don’t go to school and you don’t get a job, you’re going up to Norma who was Geoff Guest’s wife,” McLeod said.

Petford’s rigorous program included teaching students horsemanship, mustering cattle, farming and growing food.

Having forged a successful career in government and business, McLeod said the routine, discipline and respect he learnt at Petford gave him the confidence he needed to pursue education and employment opportunities.

“I had a lot more respect for my parents, for my home and getting an education which subsequently I went on to do and I went on to get employment,” McLeod said.

From here, McLeod said the flow on effects of the what he learnt carried him throughout his life, even giving him the resilience to recover and continue onto business success after a serious car accident left him an amputee.

“It’s a matter of being able to make decisions and problem

solve, for us to make the right decisions as adults, then we can become independent, we can become resourceful,” he said.

“We can not only protect ourselves, we can develop the skills, the knowledge, the characteristics to be able to help other people and contribute to causes and a purposeful, meaningful life.”

Almaden man Alwyn Lyall also knows first-hand how early intervention can change lives.

Mr Lyall said he was on the brink of getting into trouble as a youngster when he started attending Petford.

He now manages a land trust in Cape York exporting timber and passes the knowledge he learnt onto others.

“I’m lucky enough to use Old-Man’s (Geoff Guest) stuff throughout my whole life,” he said.

“We’ve just started exporting to China and I have eight boys from Mareeba started up there working and they’re doing really well.

“The foundation of anybody, man or woman, is you’ve gotta know how to work, you’ve gotta know how to live your life and not depend on anybody.”

Young people love our natural assets YOUNG people rank the region’s natural assets as the top reason they love living in Cairns, followed by the relaxed lifestyle and the great weather.

That’s according to the inaugural Our Cairns Youth Survey, which was one of two community surveys undertaken by Council from August 28 to October 16.

Overall, 8065 people responded to both surveys – 6786 completed the Our Cairns Survey for people aged over 18, while 1279 people responded to the Youth Survey for people aged under 18.

Almost 80 per cent of respondents to the Youth Survey said exploring the region’s natural outdoor areas (beaches, creeks and waterfalls) was their favourite reason for living in Cairns.

This reflected in their

responses to what facilities they frequented, with beaches (83%) top of the list, followed by the Esplanade (80%), parks and sporting facilities (67%), walking tracks (58%) and the Lagoon (46%).

When it came to their future, getting a job (61%) and having enough money (60%) were the two greatest concerns for young people, along with mental health (50%), getting into university (43%) and climate change (30%).

Notably, half of the respondents in the Youth Survey planned to leave Cairns once they completed school, with 62% intending to return to the city in the future.

The main reason for leaving was for study (48%), followed by the allure of a bigger city (26%).

Almost three-quarters of the young people who responded to the survey (74%) have not been a victim of crime over the past two years.

Most young people indicated they feel safe in their suburb, with 50% feeling safe all the time and 28% feeling safe during the day.

Unfortunately, 4% do not feel safe anytime.

For those respondents who have been a victim of crime, they have been impacted by theft (71%), harassment (23%), assault (19%), bullying (18%) or sexual assault (12%).

Summer in the Tropics

THE Cairns & Great Barrier Reef tourism industry has 125 million reasons to be happy with the confirmation that visitors from Greater Sydney and Victoria will be able to travel from 1 December.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Mark Olsen said TTNQ was pleased to have confirmation that travellers from Victoria and the 34 communities of Greater Sydney would be able to start enjoying Summer in the Tropics in just one week.

“Visitors from Victoria and New South Wales inject $50 million a month into our region and the announcements, a full week in advance of the easing of the restrictions, mean travellers can book with confidence,” he said.

“Our destination has the opportunity for a $125 million boost to visitor spend for the summer holidays which will support hundreds of jobs in our community at a time when it is needed most.

“The first interstate flights in July were full of smiling holidaymakers arriving in paradise, with as many as 3500 visitors a week arriving from Sydney.

“We receive more than 225,000 visitors each year from Sydney, spending nearly $300 million per annum with most of that coming during winter.

“With summer officially starting the day the borders open, we will travel to Sydney in person next week to invite Greater Sydney back to Cairns & Great Barrier Reef.

“Now we just need confirmation that the reef operators and other tour operators can get back to 75 per cent COVID-safe carrying capacity to allow them to start their recovery.

“It is vital the State Government provide an extension to the Business Support programs including waiving operator fees and charges and continuing the rent relief as we try to give operators some chance of surviving what will be a bumpy ride in 2021.

“It is important to realise that the region is still missing more than $4 million a day in international visitor spend and most operators missed out on the normally strong domestic winter with hundreds of millions in lost revenue for the destination. “

Cassowary Coast gears up for tourists CASSOWARY Coast Regional Council Councillor and Economic Development and Tourism Portfolio holder Kylie Farinelli today said that Queensland reopening their border to Victoria and New South Wales from 1 December 2020 is a huge step forward and a welcome relief to our tourism sector.

“The reuniting of the states in the lead up to Christmas and school holidays is the perfect opportunity to encourage visitors to visit the Cassowary Coast and unwind after a stressful 2020.

“The local tourism industry has been significantly affected by the international and interstate border closure and Council has been proud to work collaboratively with Tropical Coast Tourism on a number of initiatives this year.

“This included the ‘102 things-to-do’ promotion, attending the Cairns Expo and Ironman Expo to highlight the Cassowary Coast as a holiday destination, presentations to Chambers throughout the year, and the two organisations have been in regular contact to ensure we were on the front foot to

promote tourism in an ever changing environment.

“With more people visiting our region and hitting the roads, I’d encourage the community to remember to take regular breaks when driving long distances, stick to the speed limits and stay safe this holiday season,“ Tropical Coast Tourism Executive Officer Patrick Bluett said Tropical Coast Tourism welcomes the reopening of the New South Wales & Victoria borders effective from December 1.

Learning from a natural disaster A fire that burnt through world-heritage rainforest has made the Wet Tropics a barometer for climate change and a testing ground for rainforest recovery practices.

Rainforest fires are unusual – so the forest near Silkwood has become a learning area for botanists, researchers and natural resource management specialists who want to be prepared for a hotter, less predictable future.

Terrain NRM is working with the Cassowary Coast Regional Council on a revegetation and weed control project in council reserve bordering Japoon National Park, where the wildfire moved up a ridge and continued burning for 10 days in late 2018.

Terrain’s Tony O’Malley said some areas had been taken over by invasive weeds, which could potentially threaten rainforest recovery.

“We are funding the council to replace fire-promoting weeds with fire-retarding rainforest trees at the entrance to the park,’’ Mr O’Malley said.

“The goal is to strengthen the park’s resilience to fire and weed invasions.”

The two organisations are also monitoring the rainforest’s regrowth by surveying sites for the next four years as part of the project.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council’s Damon Sydes said guinea grass, Siam weed, lantana and giant bramble had prospered in the five-hectare reserve since the fire.

“We began by selective

spraying right across the reserve in early 2020 and then planting native rainforest trees, from Council and Queensland Parks and Wildlife stocks, in strips bordering Nyleta Rd,’’ he said.

“The trees are growing well and there’s a bit of a seed bank from the forest that’s still there so there has been natural regeneration too. This is an experiment to see if we can accelerate the rainforest’s self-repair.”

Mr O’Malley said innovative weed control methods were being used.

“We want to maximise natural recovery of native plants so it’s light, selective spraying to knock weeds back without impacting native seedlings underneath,’’ he said.

“Unmanaged fires could potentially change species composition and make the whole system more vulnerable to wildfires. We are hoping this project will be a model for fire recovery in tropical rainforests.”

The work is part of Terrain NRM’s ‘Native Vegetation – Many Hands Make Light Work’ project, funded by the Queensland Government’s Natural Resources Investment Program. It is improving the resilience of big patches of native vegetation in partnership with local councils. Projects have included revegetation and weed control work at South Cedar Creek in the Ravenshoe area and the removal of hiptage, an invasive weed, near Mossman National Park.

Program wins national biosecurity award THE Panama TR4 Program has great news to share, winning the community award at the 2020 Australian Biosecurity Awards.

The award recognises delivery of significant biosecurity outcomes, awareness raising, and outstanding contributions to the protection of plant health.

The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment runs the awards each year. The Program was nominated by Australian Banana Growers’ Council CEO, Jim Pekin.

“The Panama TR4 Program is a fine example of how people can work together, combining their diverse skills and talents to protect a valuable industry against a serious biosecurity risk,” Mr Pekin said.

“Its continuing efforts in Queensland since 2015 have been an outstanding contri-

bution to plant health, and to the protection of our industry and regional communities that rely upon the banana industry.”

Program Leader Rhiannon Evans said the award recognises the hard work of growers, industry and past and present Program staff.

“The Panama TR4 Program has taken the concept of shared responsibility and really amplified it, making sure industry is with us in our decision-making every step of the way.

“This collaboration and strong positive relationship has led to one of the most successful control and containment efforts for this disease anywhere in the world.

My team and I are incredibly proud of what we have achieved.”

Australian cocoa first ready to go global NICOLE GIBSON Chocolate makers are rejoicing with the release of the country’s only locally produced cocoa butter and cocoa powder, further cementing Far North Queensland’s status as the chocolate capital of Australia.

The brains behind the products are Gordonvale chocolate growers Laurence and Ginetta Marmara who own Australia’s largest cocoa farm, East Trinity Cocoa.

Two years ago they saw a niche in the market due to the volume of chocolate makers and home hobbyists using overseas forms of the products to make chocolate.

They embarked on a process which resulted in the establishment of a $1.2 million manufacturing facil-

ity, opening their doors for business last month.

“I could see what we needed to do was to multifunctionalise and give Australia something other than just a chocolate bar and to cater for all the other people who wanted to make chocolate,” Mr Marmara said.

The introduction of the products means it is now easier than ever before for businesses and chocolate enthusiasts to produce their own 100% Australian made chocolate.

Since launching the husband and wife team have sold about 500kgs of the products to producers across the country and received significant overseas interest from countries like America, Europe and Brazil.

Mr Marmara said he believed the attraction to Australian cocoa was due to

farming practices and product quality.

“They (clients) know how strict we are with our farming practices,” he said. “(On our farm) they know how strict we are with our water quality and manufacturing practices.

“We’re aiming for an excellent product, we don’t want to settle for a good product.”

Like most industries, COVID-19 caused significant impacts for the farmers who, prior to the pandemic, had a list of international clients waiting to receive their other products which include cocoa beans, cocoa paste and cocoa tea.

“I can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

“We’re ready to go global.”

Still strong after 40 years with HIV A CAIRNS man who has lived with HIV for nearly four decades wants people to know that the sexually transmitted infection (STI) is no longer a death sentence, now that effective treatments are available.

Ahead of World AIDS Day on December 1, Mark Mills has shared his story about becoming infected with HIV in the mid-1980s in Sydney.

“I was diagnosed in 1984 and moved up to Cairns in 1988 for a tropical lifestyle, because I believed it would give me a better chance of survival,” he said.

Mark, 60, started his HIV treatment in the early 1990s, and the viral load he was carrying has become undetectable.

This means the virus has been reduced to such small quantities that it can no longer be detected by standard blood tests, and can no longer be transmitted through sex.

“Living with HIV hasn’t changed my life greatly. I’ve got a great life here in Cairns: a house, a dog, a mortgage. I take HIV medication – tablets – just once a day,” said Mark.

“When I was first diag-

nosed with HIV all those years ago, I never thought I would get to this stage, nearly 40 years in the future.”

People of all ages can be affected by HIV. In recent years in FNQ, people in their 20s have been most affected, although adults of all ages have been newly diagnosed with HIV. While Mark has had a fortunate life, clinicians from the Cairns Sexual Health Service are urging people to reach out and support others living with the STI. Cairns Sexual Health Service clinical nurse consultant Libby Power said people living with HIV can experience stigma and feel isolated because of this.

A PERSPECTIVE ON THE BRERETON REPORT

No one could ever deny that the findings handed down last week with the Brereton Report were shocking to say the very least.

Although the report was heavily redacted, there appears to be a credible body of evidence to support the allegations of war crimes committed in Afghanistan by Australian special forces.

This was a comprehensive four-year enquiry by Major General Paul Brereton and the findings have rocked Australia to the core.

War is an ugly affair. It’s brutal and uncompromising. I do not condone any such actions as outlined in Brereton’s report.

I do feel for the thousands of serving men and women, their families and friends who also would feel repulsed by the report’s findings.

Australia has a proud military history. A distinguished service record where we stand up for what is right and fair and as a nation we have sent our very best men and women without hesitation.

From Simpson and his donkey on the shores of Gallipoli, Colonel Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop caring for his fellow prisoner of war on the Burma-Thai railway we have always served proudly and passionately.

We have served with compassion, and continue to serve with distinction and thousands have given their lives to ensure that not only Australians, but millions of families world-wide can be free from tyranny and have a better life.

I re-read the short poem penned in 1970 by American Charles M Province. The words are so pertinent today.

Disability Royal Commission Interim Report

I welcome the Disability Royal Commission’s interim report on its first 15 months of operations.

There are many lessons to be learnt from the evidence shared with the Royal Commission by people whose lives have been impacted by violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Abuse is not inevitable for people with disability and must not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The report makes special note of the difficulties of reaching all people with disability who have experienced abuse.

For this reason, Endeavour Foundation continues to encourage all people with disability to contact the Commission or an advocacy organisation that can assist them in doing so, if they wish to speak out.

I acknowledge the courage of those who have already come forward and shared their experiences, and I applaud

the Commission’s commitment to creating a safe, inclusive and accessible environment for people who wish to disclose abuse.

The interim report highlights many of the far-reaching challenges people with disability experience, from policy and funding constraints, sector practices and interfaces with other mainstream services to a lack of understanding and undesirable community behaviour.

We all must listen to people with disability who are speaking out in the Royal Commission, so our nation can become a place where people with disability feel safe, valued, and free to live the lives of their choosing.

Former Ravenshoe resident Hayley Buchanan has amazed doctors TANYA MURPHY HAYLEY Buchanan, an ex-Ravenshoe resident and business owner is currently fighting for her life against an aggressive and rare form of cancer.

Hayley’s fight for life

She accessed special treatment in Thailand thanks to a fundraiser organised by her family, and has amazed her doctors with her progress, despite being told in February that there was no hope for her survival.

“The treatment has done wonders and Hayley is now so full of energy that you wouldn’t know she has cancer besides the fact that she’s skinny and doesn’t have a lot of hair.

Originally from Melbourne the 39-year old mother moved to the Tablelands region in 2010 where she settled in Kuranda for two years. She later moved to Ravenshoe for eight years where she opened her own community shop/café, the Octopi Garden.

After a family crisis forced her to move back to Melbourne in 2018, Hayley was living with her family in relative bliss until a shock diagnosis.

In February this year, Hayley was diagnosed with Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumours (DSRCT), a rare cancer that has only been reported 200-400 times worldwide with a 15 per cent fiveyear survival rate.

New Childcare Centre

Grab a piece of history at charity auction

A childcare centre in Edmonton catering for up to 180 children has been approved

by Council.

Located at the former Pynes Indoor Garden Hire, the proposed centre at 24 and 26 Hartill St, will be set on 5400 square metres and incorporate four buildings, connected by covered and uncovered walkways and outdoor play areas.

The centre will cater for a maximum of 180 children up to 12 years old, include before and after school hours care, and will employ 30 staff members.

The development will see the removal of current buildings on the site to make way for purpose-built childcare facilities, except for the existing lowset house on 24 Hartill St, which will be refurbished.

A range of antique items salvaged from the old nurses’ quarters at Atherton Hospital will be auctioned this Saturday, November 28 at the cattle sheds at the Atherton Showgrounds, to raise money for the Atherton Friends of the Hospital Foundation (FOHF).

“An expert crew went through the building and removed French doors, arched and casement windows, balustrades and other items which have been donated to the Atherton FOHF for a community auction,” Ms Jennings said.

Two Cairns sports club will share in almost $6000 of Go Clubs grant funding.

Council has approved $3,122 for the Stratford Bowls Club, while the Leichhardt Junior Soccer Club has been awarded $2,800.

Go Clubs grants are available to community organisations that have registered with the Go Clubs program and have attained and maintained a Bronze level of accreditation.

Atherton Hospital Acting Director of Nursing, Leonie Jennings, said the Atherton Hospital Redevelopment team had made it a priority to capture the past by salvaging recyclable items from the Primary Health Centre before it was demolished.

“I know how important this building was to the community but unfortunately it was financially impossible to preserve as part of the redevelopment.

“It was in very poor con-

dition. This way the community will have the chance to take a piece of the old building home as a keepsake at the community auction.”

FOHF president Dianne Williams expressed her gratitude to the health service for the donated items and said it was a wonderful way for the old Atherton Hospital buildings to be remembered and cherished.

“We’re all very excited about the new facilities being provided but it’s beautiful to be able to remember the special times that happened in the old buildings,” Mrs Williams said.

Among items to be auctioned are a board room table, dozens of doors and windows, other furniture and a vintage Beale piano.

Mrs Williams said the Beale piano was made some time between 1912-16.

“It is thought that Jim McConnell sold the piano for 175 pounds to the Atherton Hospital after his first wife Luisa died of the Spanish Flu. He had the piano shipped up from New South Wales and brought up to Atherton by horse and buggy,” she said.

A coffee van and food stalls will be present. After the auction, a cent sale will be held at the Merriland Hall.

Sailability brings a smile to their faces TANYA MURPHY The joy and freedom of sailing has brought a smile to the faces of many local people living with a disability since Sailability Cairns became the first in Australia to launch four new SV14 dinghies in mid-October.

The CV14 high performance sailing dinghy features special seating, stability and steering equipment to enable it to be sailed by two people, one or both with a disability.

“The joy on the faces of our regular participants after such a lengthy shutdown was a pleasure to behold,” said Sailability President Jeff Crofts.

Sailability Cairns is an independent registered charity set up in 2014 by members of Cairns Yacht Club (CYC), to provide sailing for people with disability within the Cairns community.

“Hopefully next year, if social distancing rules ease, we will also be able to once again operate our Hansa 303 dinghies together with the SV14’s - a total of nine vessels - providing sailing to all Cairns people with disability.”

In March they were forced to close due to COVID-19, as their existing five Hansa 303 dinghies had side-by-side seating which didn’t allow for social distancing.

Tropical Tree Day celebrations at Arthur Strike Park THIS Sunday a team of dedicated volunteers will aim to plant more than 1500 native trees to mark the annual Tropical Tree Day celebrations in Cairns.

This community event is jointly sponsored by Cairns Regional Council, Skyrail and Pacific Toyota.

This year’s tree planting is planned for Arthur Strike Conservation Park in Edmonton, the site where more than 1500 trees were planted last year.

GIVING CHARITY A GOOD WRAP STARTING this Saturday November 28, gift-wrapping services will once again be offered at Mount Sheridan Plaza, to raise much needed funds for the Cancer Council.

The ‘Flower Power’ team of volunteers have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Cancer Council over the years through gift wrapping and other fundraising activities.

They have 14 regular members and about 30 casuals who help out

with gift wrapping at Christmas time and at last year’s Christmas gift-wrapping they raised more than $13,000.

“We couldn’t do much fundraising this year due to COVID-19, so we’d love people to support our gift-wrapping and help in the fight against cancer,” said volunteer Maureen Gardiner.

The gift-wrapping service will be available at Mount Sheridan Plaza, from November 28 to December 24.

Funding for Splash Park and Port Douglas Pool Concept DOUGLAS Shire Council has stepped up plans to build a splash park and public pool in Port Douglas, tipping $465,000 into developing concepts, designs, and a masterplan at today’s 2020/21 Annual Budget Review.

A recent online survey completed by more than 600 people revealed about 87% of respondents believed the tourist town needs a splash park, while 68% supported building a public pool.

Multiple ideas such as a café, mini golf and entertainment precinct near the site were also suggested by survey respondents to form part of the brief for the options report.

Once complete, the concepts and design options will be put back out to community consultation for further feedback.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said Council was acting on a clear mandate from the community to progress the project.

“Our recent survey confirmed the findings from previous consultation that there is widespread support for investment in a safe swimming option and water play area in Port Douglas,” he said.

“The next step is to pull together some really ex-

citing concepts and designs that reflect the desires of the community, before asking for further feedback on the project.”

“I continue to seek a meeting with Cook MP Cynthia Lui to discuss the community survey results and her Government’s $1.5 million election commitment. I look forward to sitting down with her and discussing how the Douglas Shire Council and community can work with her to deliver this exciting project.”

We all love our dogs, but is it fair to leave them unattended in your car at anytime of the year.

Some of the key facts: • Vehicles in the sun get hot at any time of the year.

• A vehicle can get hot even with the windows down in a cool, shaded position – the clouds and sun can move quickly.

• Leaving car windows down on an unattended vehicle is illegal and will not prevent a car from reaching extreme temperatures.

• Vehicles are made of metal and glass – both heat up quickly and retain heat.

Generally speaking, vehicles with larger glass surface areas (e.g. hatchbacks) heat up faster and to higher temperatures than similar-sized sedans.

• Tray-back utilities can get extremely hot. Dogs travelling on the back of utes must be secured and have access to shade and water – preferably under a canopy.

• Due to health regulations, dogs cannot enter shopping centres, unless in special circumstances and with prior agreement from management.

• Dogs tied up unattended outside a car or building may present a risk to the public and may be at risk themselves (from cruelty, theft and weather conditions). You may also be in breach of local council laws.

What steps can be done to safe guard you dog this summer: Do not risk your dog’s life in a hot car. Leave your dog (and other animals) at home with shade, shelter and access to fresh water.

If, as a last resort (or in an emergency) you need to have your dog with you, the RSPCA advises: • DON’T leave your dog inside a stationary vehicle, even with the windows down (locked or otherwise). Leaving car windows down on an unattended vehicle is illegal and will not prevent a car from reaching

• DO leave your dog secured in a safe area in the shade outside the vehicle with access to water, and ideally under the supervision of a reliable person, if you have to leave the animal for a short time.

• DO ensure sufficient ventilation while the car is moving (air conditioning, windows down safely) and that your dog, or its cage, is adequately restrained.

• DO ensure your dog has regular access to cool, clean drinking water.

Leaving an animal without appropriate water and shelter is an offence under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 and you may be prosecuted.

THE Irish Pub is an iconic institution, to be found in every major city of the world, renowned for its welcoming, relaxed social atmosphere and hearty food and drink.

But there are few Irish bars in the world where you can sit back and relax on a huge open deck with gorgeous uninterrupted views of a palm-lined beach!

So it’s little wonder that O’Donnell’s Irish Bar and Grill has quickly taken off, since its opening three years ago, to be one of the most popular spots for locals to catch up for a meal and a drink.

Within only 18 months of opening it had already reached its current Trip Advisor rating as one of the top

three restaurants in Palm Cove.

And while the light, airy and open setting is certainly a far cry from the cold and rainy Emerald Isle, the atmosphere is true to the traditional Irish spirit of hospitality, where visitors come as strangers and then come back every weekend as friends.

Owners Mark Byron and Martin Pleasants are from Liverpool (an English city which is close to Ireland) and Belfast respectively.

After realising there were no Irish pubs between Cairns and Port Douglas, they decided to rectify the situation by creating a restaurant with a theme that they were both very familiar with, and absolutely nailed it.

According to Mark, prior to O’Donnells moving in, the building had seen seven businesses come and go in as many years, so O’Donnells’ success and continuing expansion is not just a testament to its beautiful location, but also to its delicious food, welcoming service and quality live entertainment.

Naturally the a la carte

menu offers plenty of traditional Irish fare such as braised beef cheeks, steak and Guinness pie, bangers and mash, Irish stew, and Irish mussels, but there is much more on offer.

The grill offers some of the best steaks and seafood in town and a pizza kitchen will soon be unveiled on Wednesday.

On my last visit I had an absolutely amazing eye fillet cooked to perfection and my friend had the mussels, which she declared to be divine.

Of course you can get a Guinness here, but we opted for cocktails, and with chilled out live music setting the mood we watched the moon rise over the sunset - it was a

slice of heaven!

The family-friendly restaurant caters to everyone with a kids’ menu, vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options, regular specials, a function room that can be booked for parties, and live music every weekend.

More than a day in Herberton THE Historic Village Herberton provides a rare glimpse spanning two centuries into Australia’s pioneering past and cultural history.

Exhibits range from dwellings, antiques and vehicles through to Aboriginal artefacts and World War II memorabilia.

It is a living museum experience, with demonstrations of vintage machinery and trades, including blacksmithing and printing.

The Village occupies 16 acres (6.5 hectares) at Herberton and has been laid out to resemble a tin mining town with a garage, newspaper

office, butcher’s shop, chemist, grocery store, frock salon, toy shop, coach house, John Deere tractor shed, radio store, sewing machine shop and tool shed.

Each are stocked with period wares and items of the day.

Elderslie House, built by John Newell, ‘the father of Herberton’ sits grandly among more than 60 restored buildings. These include the Herberton State School, circa 1883, and the haunted Bakerville Tearooms, where food is served daily.

Allow a full day for your visit.

The Village is open seven days

Nearby there is the Herberton Town. The oldest town on the Atherton Tablelands has its entire precinct listed on the National Heritage Register, and is best discovered via its intriguing photo posts and self-guided Heritage Walk.

See the earliest building, the 1881 School of Arts, in the main street and wander down to the Jack & Newell Store c.1882, which houses the fascinating Spy & Camera Museum.

Open seven days, this museum is one-of-a-kind and will transport visitors from down-

town Herberton to the cold, dark streets of the former USSR and the world of espionage.

Learn the history of photography, starting with the birth of today’s modern camera and finish with owner Michael Peterson’s favorite, the spy camera.

The Railway Museum is also worth a visit. Located at the end of John Street in Herberton, the Railway Museum is open on weekends and public Holidays.

The Museum is operated by the Atherton-Herberton Historic Railway inc. volunteer organisation.

Having restored the old train line, they now operate train rides from Herberton Station to the Historic Village Herberton on a regular Sunday timetable between 10am and 3pm.

There’s so much to see and do in Herberton, and so much history in the region.

Well worth heading off to spend the day and explore the region. Access from Cairns can be via Kuranda of the Gillies, either way the drive is pleasant and the perfect way to spend the day.

Heidke’s glittering onenight show TANYA MURPHY Award-winning multi-talented Kate Miller-Heidke will perform a glittering one-night show on Sunday December 6 at Munro Martin Parklands, hot on the heels of releasing her fifth album, ‘Child In Reverse’ last month.

The Brisbane-based singer-songwriter’s sweet yet deceptively powerful voice can most easily be brought to mind by recalling her threetimes platinum tearful ballad ‘The last Day on Earth’, which made it to number three on the Australian charts in 2009.

With her four previous albums she has achieved multi-platinum status, appeared in the top 10 album and singles charts numerous times and has been nominated for numerous ARIA awards.

As if being a multi-platinum pop star wasn’t impressive enough, Miller-Heidke is also a classically trained singer and composer, performing in the New York and London

operas, as well as writing her own opera ‘The Rabbits’ and collaborating on the music and lyrics to ‘Muriel’s Wedding: the Musical’ which both toured to sold out crowds across Australia in 2015 and 2019 respectively.

In 2015 Miller-Heidke broke into national television, featuring in The Divorce, a fourpart ABC mini-series and was recently crowned fan favourite for her performance as The Queen, on hit TV series ‘The Masked Singer’ in 2019.

Miller-Heidke was also Australia’s representative at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest, where her heartfelt performance and the out-of-this world staging won her a top ten placing.

small instruments, BIG personalities TANYA MURPHY The ukulele might seem like a baby version of a guitar, but a trio of men are out to prove that it’s not the size of your instrument, but the way you play it that matters.

Dazz and The Boyzz are a ukulele band whose shirts and personalities are as loud and jolly as their music, and who also hold the world record for the band name with the most “Z’s” in it.

Playing every Sunday from 2pm to 5:30pm at the Beach Almond in Palm Cove, the band consists of Darren Howie on bass and lead vo-

cals, Russel Boswell on lead ukulele and Stephen Myhre on percussion.

After traveling and playing in various professional rock bands for most of their lives, the trio eventually figured out that the happiest rock stars are the ones who play in thongs at the beach.

With three-part harmonies and loads of classic feel good sing-along songs from the likes of the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Nancy Sinatra, Tom Jones, Garth Brooks, John Denver, Jimmy Buffet and no less than

CAYLA GEORGE CAIRNS should be ready for some exciting matches as we dive into Cayla’s Court for a wrap up of round three this weekend and kick off round four.

as we reach the halfway point of the season in a tough scenario where most players and staff are away from their families, kids, husbands and wives.

Not even at international events like the Olympics or World Cup would players be in such close quarters for such a

long time so we’re all very aware of looking out for each other in these unique circumstances.

The main focus for teams right now is to keep doing the right things, keep recovering and keep pushing on.

This will make for some epic battles in the coming week with Adelaide now out of quarantine, in a revised season that has seen each team’s game schedule reduce from 14 games to 13.

Some courtside action to look out for include the double headers in Cairns on Saturday and Townsville on Tuesday.

The Fire’s other big match and must-win according to Seebohm, is in Cairns on Sunday when they take on Sydney Uni. “That one is crucial for us in terms of trying to be a top four team and we had a really tight contest with Sydney last time we played,” he said.

“Sydney have had a couple of really nice performances recently and they’re a really tough team so we need to make sure we bring our own game.

“That one’s going to be a big one for us.”

The Townsville Fire are proving they’re a force to be reckoned with, circling the top of the 2020 WNBL ladder as they make their Cairns season debut this weekend.

After finishing 2019 last, Townsville have surged into the top three over the past week with coach Shannon Seebohm crediting the team’s comradery in helping to boost them up.

“We’ve got a really tightknit group and some really great personalities and the girls get along really well off the court so those kinds of things really help,” Seebohm said.

“We’re trying to be really stringent with our recovery giving the girls days off and time away from the court outside of games.”
