Celebrating Hanukkah in Cairns

PHOTO: Tanya Murphy TANYA MURPHY TO celebrate the 2020 Hanukkah season, the Chabad Centre for Jewish Life North Queensland will light a giant boomerang menorah at the Cairns Esplanade this Sunday December 13 at 5:30pm, and the whole community is invited to attend.
Cairns Esplanade area, representing the confluence of both Australian and Jewish cultural history in Cairns.
Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is the major festival in the Jewish calendar, and this year, it goes from the evening of Thursday, December 10 until the evening of Friday, December 18.
Hanukkah recalls a victory in the year 160BC when the Jewish people drove out the invading Syrian Greeks and recaptured the Temple of Jerusalem, allowing them to re-light the menorah and resume practicing their religion after a period of religious suppression.
A menorah is a candelabra associated with Jewish culture for more than 2000 years, which was traditionally kept burning in the Temple of Jerusalem. This year the Cairns candle-lighting ceremony will feature a giant menorah constructed entirely of boomerangs. It was created with the blessings of the current elders of the Ydinji tribe, the traditional owners of the
Menorahs, candles, and Hanukkah-at-home kits will also be distributed to attendees at the COVID-safe outdoor event.
Cairns Rabbi Ari Rubin said the whole community, from all backgrounds and beliefs, were encouraged to join the event, which celebrates universal values like religious freedom and hope during times of darkness. “The menorah serves as a symbol of light and hope for us today amidst the darkness
of the pandemic, as it did for generations before us,” he said. “This year, the holiday has added significance as so many around the world will be isolated at home on Hanukkah amid these difficult times. “The menorah is a reminder that light can be brought to the darkest of times, and uniquely, at the core of the holiday’s observance is sharing the light with others who may not be experiencing it.” Cairns’ 500-strong Jewish community will join more than eight million Jews in more than 100 countries to celebrate Hannukah this year. Cairns’ boomerang menorah will be one of 15,000 large public menorahs around the world, including in front of landmarks such as the White House, the Eiffel Tower, and the Kremlin.

A place to belong for mental illness survivors TANYA MURPHY YOGA, fitness classes, art classes, cooking classes, computer classes, gardening, bingo, music lessons, social support, rehabilitation and plenty of laughter and companionship are on offer for people with a mental illness, at the Junction Clubhouse Cairns. The Junction was started in 2014 in Cairns, and is one of hundreds of clubhouses around the world which aim to rehabilitate and assist people with a mental illness in a safe, non-clinical environment. “The Junction provides a safe place where members can belong, form friendships with like-minded people, and support each other,” said clubhouse director Leonie Shawcross. “The clubhouse is unique in that it accepts members on a walk-in basis, with the only prerequisites being that you have a lived experience
of mental illness and believe that recovery is possible.” The clubhouse has more than 200 members who attend voluntarily whenever they need to. Many attend every day to get support and find meaningful ways to fill their day, and enjoy a cooked lunch from the clubhouse kitchen. “The Junction is open from 8.30am-3pm to give the sense of a workday - members nominate themselves for tasks to support the function of the organisation, such as helping with cooking, cleaning and answering phones for example,” said Ms Shawcross. “The Junction also has three recovery coaches who help members with their individual goals, whether that means finding housing, managing finances, applying for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) or getting a job.” The Junction also specialises in NDIS support for peo-
ple with mental illness.
Weekend social activities and outings are also organised by the clubhouse. Ms Shawcross said this year’s COVID-19 lockdown was a huge challenge for people with mental illnesses as it made it difficult for them to access services. “During lockdown the Junction developed an outreach service where we took food and assistance to members in their homes, which proved so successful that it has continued after lockdown,” she said. “It highlighted a need for outreach to help members who don’t have the confidence to come to the clubhouse.” The Junction is funded by Queensland Health and the Primary Health Network and the building for the clubhouse was donated by the Mangano family.

Freshwater’s Friday Night Festival Launch

FRESHWATER comes to life this Friday with the launch of a new and exciting night-time festival. The Freshwater Festival is a free family event which kicks off at 5.30pm in the Tennis Club Precinct, featuring a smorgasbord of local entertainment, food, attractions, arts and craft stalls and children’s activities.
“We wanted to be able to give the opportunity to the community to have an event like that,” Councillor Vallely said. “When people like that come up with ideas that are really innovative that are not just in the city, it’s nice to have events that are in the burbs.

Mrs Ives said they would not give up on their home. “We’re not going anywhere,” she said. “This road wasn’t on the planning scheme when we bought the block of land. “We raised our two kids in this house, we’ve put so much work into it over the years, there’s nowhere else we want to live. “It’s our home, you can’t put a price on it.” A council spokesperson confirmed to Cairns Local News that the proposed road would necessitate acquisition of the Ives’ house, and said the link road would provide “safer passage for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians as they will no longer have to travel via the highway.” The spokesperson said council had received Roads to Recovery Funding from the Federal Government to bring forward the road construction to the 2021-22 financial year. “The link road has been proposed for over 20 years and the property owners at 148 Trinity Beach Rd have been aware of the potential acquisition of the property,” said the council spokesperson. cluding reduced travel times between the suburbs, improved running times for Sunbus, reduced congestion on the highway, and improved access to the Trinity Beach Sporting Precinct and Trinity Anglican School as well as to the suburb of Kewarra Beach in general, which currently can only be reached via one road, Poolwood Road. A concept plan is expected to be completed within the next three months and will then be released to the community for comment.

The resort is his current priority and when finished will consist of 27 blocks of four cabins/rooms, totalling 108 rooms, as well as a dining room/ restaurant and water park. After the Mareeba resort Mr Wu plans on renovating the old Mad Cow/Jungle Bar as well the units behind it on Lake Street. Plans include turning the main
building into a backpacker’s with pod style bedding and an Asian quarter with restaurants from all over Asia behind it.

then the government changed their mind. “When we took over the island everything was broken or run-down including the sewerage, electrical and water. “Nothing was compliant on the island, we can’t get insurance on buildings that are not compliant, there was a lot of leftover problems from previous owners. “Over the past few years we have just been patching things up.” As for Acacia Court on The Esplanade and the house beside it, Mr Wu plans on renovating the site and turning the top levels of the hotel into a retirement village.

THE Port Douglas Markets will turn on the Christmas magic with a special festive-inspired market day this Sunday from 8am – 1.30pm. Christmas carols, a roaming tropical Santa and decorated market stalls will feature at the Port Douglas Markets Spectacular.

Local singer Alteouise De Vaughn will be singing Christmas Carols next to St Mary’s Church from 12pm to 1pm with a bevy of the region’s most talented buskers playing throughout the day. Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr will judge a stallholder competition where regulars will be vying for the most creative and decorative stalls. Opened in July 2020 during the peak of COVID-19 lockdowns, Maker is the brainchild of young local entrepreneur Raine Ward. “I wanted to create a platform to celebrate and showcase local artists” said Ms Ward. “Often our local artists rely on the local markets, and their own social media channels alone to showcase and sell their pieces. With COVID restricting travel and events, I wanted to create a space that could connect buyers
with artists, not just through our boutique in Port Douglas, but also through the online shop and our social media channels. Local artists showcased in Maker include Port Douglas local Annetta Mills of Kokee & Ko. Annetta began making her now famous kokedamas as gifts for friends and family. Aunty Fiona’s Yarrabah dream comes true PETER MCCULLAGH AFTER a distinguished career in Rugby League, Johnathon Thurston felt a calling to work with indigenous youth, providing education, cultural and employment opportunities. The Johnathon Thurston Academy is the fruit of his passion. Established three years ago and harnessing support from the corporate community, the Academy has set about changing lives, building confidence and empowering those working within the programs.

The purpose-built building in Yarrabah was opened this week in honour of much-loved Elder Aunty Fiona Patterson to provide a welcoming space for the community’s young female residents to continue their ongoing learning and reach their full potential.
“The idea for a dedicated space for Yarrabah’s young women was always Aunty Fiona’s dream,” Johnathan said. “She has always wanted to create a welcoming and safe place where they could continue their learning – a place to call their own.
“The building provides a great opportunity to continue Aunty Fiona’s amazing work in supporting the younger generation of the Yarrabah community, in delivering the JTBelieve program. Thanks to her, young women will continue to have a light shone on them for years to come.”

FIREWORK displays will be held at the Cairns Esplanade and Palm Cove to draw the curtain on a challenging 2020 and celebrate the coming year with a renewed sense of optimism. New Year’s Eve celebrations in Cairns are being finalised, with Mayor Bob Manning revealing plans for early fireworks at the Esplanade and Palm Cove, as well as a traditional midnight display on the Esplanade. “It has been a very challenging year for everyone,” Cr Manning said.
“You get the sense that people are relieved to see the back of 2020 and looking very much towards a 2021 that brings the promise of open borders, travel and renewed enthusiasm. “New Year’s Eve events are important in that they give residents the chance to celebrate after such a tough year. “They also give everyone the chance to support businesses in our city, especially those in the tourist industry, which have been so deeply impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.”
At the Esplanade, family friendly fireworks will be held at 8.30pm with a second display at midnight to welcome the New Year. The Palm Cove fireworks display will be at 8.30pm. Cr Manning said the fireworks displays had been pared back this year due to a lack of sponsorship and the high costs of staging the events to maintain COVID compliance. “Staging this year’s events has significant extra costs associated with additional security and the

implementation of systems to allow for contact tracing,” Cr Manning said. “However, I am sure that it will still be a spectacular show that everyone in attendance will thoroughly enjoy.” People attending New Year’s Eve events are asked to practice social distancing as much as possible and will be required to “check-in” using a QR code available at numerous points along the Esplanade and at Palm Cove.

Running into 2021 NEW Year’s Eve at the Esplanade offers an alcohol-free and family friendly environment with live music, roving performers and a fun run – culminating in two spectacular fireworks displays. Hundreds of revellers are expected to welcome 2021 on the front foot by joining the New Year’s Eve Resolution Fun Run, starting at the northern end of the Esplanade at 5pm. “You don’t need to be super-fit, just willing to have some fun and finish 2020 on a high note,” Mayor Bob Manning said. “Participants are also encouraged to dress as a superhero in recognition of the superhero-like efforts of our frontline workers during this past year. “We are also making this year’s run more inclusive, with people allowed to run with their dogs.” Dogs need to be on a lead, be supervised by someone 16 years or over, must be socialised and comfortable around crowds and loud noises. The event is suitable for
all ages and fitness levels, although children aged under 12 must be supervised by an adult. Everyone who registers will receive a race bib, and the first 300 runners past the line will receive a free Jackley’s Bakehouse cupcake to celebrate their efforts. There are two race classifications – the “In it to win it” class which will include runners attempting to complete the 4km course under 24 minutes, followed by the casual “I just want to finish/I’m running with my furry friend” category. Prizes will be presented for the fastest male and female, along with prizes for best dressed humans and dog. Registrations close 28 December and are free via Council’s website at www. cairns.qld.gov.au/whats-on/ annual-events/ny-resolution-fun-run. There will be no registrations on the day due to COVID restrictions.

What a year it has been for the English language. The Macquarie Dictionary reports this week two notable additions based upon common usage throughout a period of the year. We will long remember 2020, perhaps for some of the colourful words that have sprinkled our vocabulary. COVIDIOT: A person who refuses to follow health advice aimed at halting the spread of COVID-19, as by social distancing, taking part is large gatherings, in addition to buying large amounts of perceived essentials especially toilet paper.
Each year we have an annual flu-shot. Why? Because the flu changes and mutates as it develops. I feel the COVID vacination will be an annual one, due to the ever-changing nature of the virus. But I now hear the howls of the anti-vaccination fools in our town. Look-out it’s a WHO conspiracy. Grow up guys. Vaccinations save lives. Me being vaccinated might save your mother or father from dying. Are you doing the same for my mum and dad?

In reading this week, I have been confronted by a few other rather notable additions of my own. These words capture succinctly many of my thoughts this year.
CJAG story December 4, Cairns Local News. Sounds like a soft option to me. No punishment, good food, activities and education. Are we addressing the real issues here? The parents don’t give a stuff and the kids don’t have respect.
SHARENT: noun/verb – a parent who frequently uses social media to share photos or other details about their child. With the pandemic lockdown, boredom has increased with some and the frequency and duration of social media has increased, resulting in increased instances of blatant sharenting. BEARDO: noun – nickname for a person with a beard. Requires very little explanation, but is more prevalent during November for some reason. A great one for Cairns, SKY PUPPY: noun – a colloquial word for a bat, especially a flying fox. Sky Puppy seeks to add a warmth and cute persona to our bats and we could see this in common useage before long. Perhaps my favorite must be INFODEMIC: noun – a situation in which there is such an abundance of information available on a particular subject, that it is almost impossible to determine which is reliable and which is not. My vote for the most hateful and divisive word for 2020 would have to be BOOMER-REMOVER to describe COVID-19. Does not bear explanation. I would prefer to remember 2020 for the colourful and fun additions to the language, as we morph our vocabulary almost a quickly and the virus that has dominated headlines this year. TANYA MURPHY SANTA Claus will be busy taking selfies with families, handing out free gifts, helping sprinkle his Christmas cheer (and creativity) at our workshops, and hitting the ice when he returns to DFO Cairns this Christmas. Father Christmas will feature daily at Frozen Wonder-
land’s ice-skating rink (but he won’t tell us which session) when he appears at the shopping centre from this Saturday, December 12, until Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24. He will also be taking ‘socially distanced selfies’ with families and handing out free goodies from 10:30am – 1:30pm each day. He’s a jack of all trades,
as he joins in the gingerbread decorating workshops and helps families solve the ‘Scan Santa to Win! Competition’. In this scavenger hunt-like game, customers have to solve the Christmas poem, by scanning the QR codes on the mini Santas around the Centre, to win. Each mini-Santa will contain a ‘word’ to include in the Christmas poem and ‘clue’ as where to find the next Santa.
Once complete, customers are to take their completed poem back to the Information Hub to claim their prize… and guess what, multiple prizes contain a golden ticket with cold hard cash (in the form of a gift card) to spend at DFO Cairns. Located next to TK Maxx and opposite Urban Habit, Frozen Wonderland will be open over the Christmas holidays

Now is not the time to be complacent

PETER MCCULLAGH RECENT weather conditions have seen extended periods of hot and dry weather in large areas of Queensland and in particular the Far North. With the current weather conditions we are experiencing, it’s difficult to comprehend that the official summer storm and cyclone season officially starts on November 1. The Bureau of Meteorology has outlined the forecast for the coming months indicating we may see below average rainfall and a less than average number of tropical cyclones along with hotter days and nights. While residents in coastal North Queensland have proven time and time again that they are resilient people, with a forecast outlook as such it is easy for people to become complacent about the true risks we face each storm and
cyclone season. Remember Australia has had at least one cyclone cross the coast each year since accurate records commences. Not all property loss is caused by cyclones. In March 2018 the Far North region bore the brunt of a significant weather system. It was not a cyclone or tropical low. It was a combination of factors which saw large amounts of moisture pushed onto the coast which resulted in significant rainfall over a period of days and weeks. March rainfall totals in many regions were over 1500mm and more than twice the average monthly rainfall. The culmination of this weather event saw major flooding in numerous communities from Cooktown to Rockhampton, resulting in isolation for days at a time and requiring the mobilisation
of emergency crew and the declaration of a natural disaster in many area. As a result of the heavy rainfall there were thousands of calls to Emergency Services and crews mobilised across the Far North. Rising flood water combined with storm damage to houses resulted in evacuations and emergency repairs. Now is the time to prepare your home, family and even your business for whatever may eventuate this storm and cyclone season. Do not be complacent. Prepare now and avoid the panic and confusion that could follow when an event does occur. LAST Monday, December 7, the Reef Restoration Foundation (RRF) celebrated three years since the first of their coral nurseries was installed by volunteers at Fitzroy Island. It was the first time such an intervention had been permitted on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), and since then, the not-forprofit start-up’s volunteers have transplanted more than 5000
semi-mature coral colonies at Fitzroy Island and Hastings Reef. The first transplanted corals are now flourishing, providing habitats for fish and other marine animals. RRF Chief Executive Officer Ryan Donnelly said reef restoration had been happening in other parts of the world for about 30 years, typically to repair dive tourism sites damaged by destructive fishing practices. “Prior to 2017, the policy on the GBR was to allow the reef to recover naturally after disturbance,” he said. “However, climate change has made coral bleaching and tropical cyclones more frequent, which means there is less time between events for reefs to recover. We are now permitted to employ methods that accelerate the natural process of recovery. “Reef restoration projects like our coral trees are designed to build ecological resilience at the local site scale. They are suited for dive site stewardship and are not designed to restore the entire Great Barrier Reef.
“Importantly, no reef restoration technique is designed to replace the need for urgent action on climate change.” At the RRF nurseries, volunteers cut off small fragments of healthy coral from large ‘donor’ colonies, and attach them to artificial ‘tree’ frames which are anchored to the bottom and float toward the surface. The RRF’s methods have been subjected to rigorous scientific testing over the past three years by James Cook University’s TropWater and Reef Ecologic and the results, released recently, are very positive. The study found that the RRF’s coral fragments grew twice as fast on the trees than on the sea floor, with less competition for space and sunlight, proving that the method is effective for speeding up coral recovery on a local scale. After about six months of growth, volunteers transplant most of what are by then semi-mature colonies back onto damaged sections of reef using marine cement, while the remaining colonies
are cut up into fragments and re-attached to the tree frame to begin the process again. The RRF currently focuses on just ten species of hard corals, which are species that naturally grow quickly after disturbance events, providing a habitat for marine animals until other slower-growing corals can recover naturally. The RRF is also looking at other methods of reef restoration, including re-planting pieces of living coral that have broken away from colonies through wave action, aiding recovery of corals from a wide range of species. In future, the RRF have permits to set up additional coral trees at Moore Reef, with further research to be undertaken into best practices for optimising coral growth. The RRF relies on corporate sponsorship and individual donations and has around 60 hard-working volunteers. They also receive logistical support from Fitzroy Island Resort and Seastar Cruises. TRINITY Beach residents are demanding action to solve the suburb’s youth crime problem which is so bad it has left them too afraid to speak publicly for fear of retaliation. Alarming numbers of parents are refusing to let their children visit Coastwatchers Skate Park and businesses are shelling out tens of thousands to repair damage due to ongoing attacks. Cairns Local News spoke to four residents - none of which wanted to be identified. The general consensus was groups of youths, who have taken up residence at the skate park, were responsible for the problem with bullying, fights, thefts and attempted break ins an everyday occurrence. One mother said she was intimidated by youths after a fight broke out when she visited the park with her young children recently. “My son was too scared to keep playing because he was scared they were going to hurt him,” she said. “So we said we’ll go because we haven’t been down there for six months because
of the same reason. “As we were walking away one of the kids on their scooter went into the bowl and jumped out of the bowl and almost knocked my shin and landed right in front of me and just glared at me.” The residents who spoke to Cairns Local News said they thought Cairns Regional Council’s Division 9 Councillor Brett Olds was doing a good job to effect action on the issue at that level. Councillor Olds said while part of the solution rested with families, youth justice reform was needed. “There’s got to be crime and punishment, there’s got to be an action and a punishment and we just don’t have it,” he said. “Our police do a good job especially at the Cairns Northern Beaches but when they take it to the Magistrate it’s a revolving door. “The State made the promise before the election of 150 extra police officers up here. “Even if they get them it’s not going to fix the problem, they need a complete overhaul of the Youth Justice Act.” Cairns Local News con-
tacted Minister Crawford to find out when the Palaszczuk Government’s pre-election promise of 150 new police officers and policing infrastructure would commence. The Minister said the allocation of resources was a matter for the Police Commissioner. “I take issues of crime in our community seriously and continue to advocate on behalf of local residents and businesses to ensure our regions gets the police resources it needs. “While the allocation of resources is an operational matter for the Police Commissioner, as she has previously said, this will include a minimum of 150 extra police officers to be deployed to each policing region, including Cairns.” Crime and Justice Action Group spokesperson Aaron McLeod also weighed in on the issue saying the culture of fear these situations created had hidden costs that were not being accounted for. “The current system has created an underbelly of anxiety and depression within the community.”

Getting Hitched The Right Way THERE are many things to consider when towing a caravan. From loading and hitching the caravan correctly, to safe driving techniques, do your research before you set off. The following article is courtesy of RACQ.com.au

Loading the caravan
• Rubber matting or foam on shelves will stop the contents from sliding.
It’s important to load the caravan correctly so that it tows well. Here are some tips: • Keep the centre of gravity low by putting heavy items near the floor and where possible over the axle/s. • When packing a caravan for the first time, check that its ATM/GTM and ball load is not exceeded; and that you meet all tow vehicle and tow bar specifications. If you do exceed the ball load, you can try re-stowing contents – but don’t simply move gear to the rear of the van, as this will affect the stability. If this doesn’t work, you may need to change the caravan/tow vehicle combination. • Some caravans carry greater weight on one side (because of the fridge, stove, sink, etc.). Balance this out by loading portable equipment on the other side. • Remove unnecessary items and use lightweight items wherever possible to

Hitching the car to the caravan isn’t as hard as it looks. If you’re doing it on your own, you can get hitching aids from caravan accessories shops. If you’ve got an assistant, here are a few tips:

Lane filtering ANYONE living in Cairns would be familiar with lane filtering, in particular during the peak hour commute into the city. Lane filtering is when a motorcyclist rides their motorcycle at low speed between stationary or slow moving vehicles travelling in the same direction. The 2 lines or lanes of traffic must both be travelling in the same direction. If one of the lines or lanes is a dedicated turning lane (left or right) they must not lane filter using this lane. You’re only allowed to lane filter in Queensland if you hold an open licence for the motorcycle you are riding and: • your speed when filtering is 30km/h or less • it’s safe to do so. You’re not allowed to lane
filter: • at a speed more than 30km/h • in school zones during school zone hours • if you’re a learner or provisional licence holder • when a ‘no filtering’ sign applies to the length of road • if it isn’t safe. A motorcycle rider is not allowed to use a bicycle lane to lane filter. To ensure pedestrian safety, lane filtering is only allowed between stationary or slow moving vehicles, not between a vehicle and the kerb. Red Hot Summer returns to Cairns AUSTRALIAN rock legends Jimmy Barnes, Hoodoo Gurus, Killing Heidi, Jon Stevens, Diesel, Chris Cheney and Vika and Linda are set to sizzle at the Cairns Showgrounds with the return of the Red Hot Summer Tour on Saturday May 15, 2021. With most of the 2020 tour cancelled because of COVID-19, Far North music-lovers rejoiced as tickets for the 2021 concert went on sale yesterday. Jimmy Barnes, affectionately known to all as Barnesy, hardly needs any introduction as he is the heart and soul of Australian rock and roll. He released his 17th solo album, My Criminal Record, in 2019 and recently dropped a new single, the haunting co-write with Don Walker, Killing Time, which featured the Australian Chamber Orchestra. His third book, Killing Time: short stories from the long way home, debuted at #1 on the non-fiction book charts. Hoodoo Gurus are one of the country’s favourite bands, melding together their distinctly Australian sound with a big chunk of punk attitude, making them a formidable force for more than 35 years. This is a band that helped give loud guitars a new lease of life, back when synthesisers ruled the airwaves back in the early ‘80s. The Gurus are still going strong releasing three new singles this year –
Answered Prayers, Hung Out To Dry and Get Out Of Dodge - and have a new album, and 40th anniversary celebrations, scheduled for 2021. After a sell-out tour in 2019, Jon Stevens returns to thrill audiences far and wide with the Noiseworks and INXS Collection, which pays homage to the bands that helped cement him as Aussie rock royalty. With a career that spans more than four decades, Jon has a swag of solo hits to his name, as well as songs which have become all-time favourites from his time with bands Noiseworks, INXS and the Dead Daisies. His performance will feature hit after hit and at the 2019 Red Hot Summer Tour he had punters on their feet from start to finish. Diesel brings a special show to the stage in 2021, with Re-injected 30thAnniversary. It is hard to believe that it has been little over three decades since the release of his debut album Johnny Diesel and the Injectors. Since then Diesel has released a swag of albums and forged an impressive solo career, but has always had a soft spot for the classic singles spawned from that original release. His 2021 show will revisit the essence of that record, including singles Don’t Need Love, Cry In Shame and Soul Revival, to name a few, as well as other beloved hits from throughout his career.
Killing Heidi celebrated an auspicious anniversary in 2020, two decades since the release of their rock-pop debut Reflector. The smash hit singles – including Weir and Mascara – embedded the album in Australian music history, took out four ARIA awards and reached four times platinum status. It also catapulted Killing Heidi and its teen musicians – Ella and Jesse Hooper – into international superstar status. The Hooper siblings were revered for their songwriting prowess and their subsequent albums earned them critical acclaim. Chris Cheney is revered as one of the country’s most phenomenal guitarists, and as lead-singer of rockabilly band The Living End, has been touring the world for more than three decades. Responsible for penning the smash hit singles Second Solution / Prisoner of Society, All Torn Down and Roll On to name a few, he has released eight studio albums with The Living End and have a massive fan base not only in Australia, but also the United States and United Kingdom. Extra tickets released This month’s easing of restrictions is great news for Busby Marou fans who missed out first time around, with a return to capacity ticket allocation when the duo plays two nights at Tanks Arts Centre this Friday December 11 and Saturday December 12. Having earned the badge as one of Australia’s hardest working live bands, Busby Marou will wrap up their current “Back On The Tools” tour with two intimate shows in Cairns. Making a return to the Tanks, having performed a series of sell-out shows in
the atmospheric surrounds, most recently in November 2019, the duo will be supported by local favourite, Leanne Tennant. CAYLA GEORGE ROUND five is upon us as we get into Cayla’s Court this week and fans can expect to see some epic battles, especially from the top four teams as they look to solidify their finals spots.
The WNBL action over the past week has been fast and furious with teams are playing hard to make every match count. My Melbourne and Cairns worlds collided this week being back home with the Boomers which has been amazing albeit it pretty exhausting for us playing
six games in nine days. Finals kick off in Townsville on Wednesday. The leaderboard as it stands is the Capitals, Southside, Melbourne and Townsville and I think these are the teams we will see in the finals. Matches between these teams this weekend will prove to be absolute rippers and a great pre-finals preview as we fight it out to determine who finishes where in the four top spots. Just scraping into finals is not good enough for us, we want to be top two so Sunday’s game against Townsville is a must-win for us to do this. The games to look out for this
with the help of Shyla Heal who scored 27 points. The win was bittersweet for the team with guard Lauren Nicholson charged and subsequently found guilty of Careless and Medium Impact on the Capitals’ Tahlia Tupaea during the clash. The close of round five this weekend sees Townsville taking on Adelaide tonight in Cairns and Melbourne on Sunday back on home ground. Adelaide sit in fifth spot just below the Fire with five wins and six losses to Townsville’s seven and four respectively. This is their first and only match-up of the year after matches had to be changed when Adelaide was forced into quarantine earlier in the season. Each team has two games
left to play ahead of next week’s finals and it could go any which way for Townsville with a win, lose or draw situation on the cards. Whatever happens this match is sure to give Cairns fans some of the season’s best oncourt action as these two battle it out for fourth. Sunday’s match against Melbourne will be intense with the third placed team out to get some back on Townsville after they came out hard in an earlier clash beating them 87 to 75. Consistently ranked among the league’s top teams Melbourne know how to win and will make Townsville fight for every point. The Fire will need to give it everything they have got to hold them off and cement a finals spot.

It was a week of highs and lows for the Townsville Fire and now every match is a must win with the Adelaide Lightning hot on their heels for a 2020 WNBL finals berth. The Townsville Fire finished round four on a high defeating defending champions, the UC Capitals, on Sunday after a shock loss to the Perth Lynx on Friday night. Perth were seeking revenge after the Fire smashed them in their first match–up of the season and they got it. They downed Townsville 84-75 after a final quarter onslaught from Lynx forward Darcee Garbin. They fired back into action Sunday beating the Capitals 8471 and managing to hang onto fourth position on the ladder

FAR North Queensland businessman and CEO of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, Tony Williamson announced this week he will vacate his role as chair of the Ken Frost Northern Pride Rugby League Club.
The Pride Board made a conscience decision two years ago to build a financial reserve to underpin the club in case of a rainy day.
Citing a mixture of family and charity commitments for the decision, Williamson felt the time was right to step aside.
Through good management and some tough decisions we managed to build a cash reserve. This cash reserve has managed to get us through, and we are well set up for next year,” said Williamson.
“The past year we have made some considerable positive inroads and I believe now is the right time for not only myself; but also the club, to allow for some fresh hands to step up and take the baton.” Williamson had planned to step aside earlier in the year at the 2020 AGM scheduled for March. COVID changed those plans along with the cancellation of the 2020 season. Williamson felt compelled to remain in his position to steer the club through

Williamson says he will leave the club with a strong sense of achievement having seen them though a very different and challenging 2020. “I am extremely proud to have some young blood coming up through the ranks around the board room table that are passionate and energetic. While I might be retiring as Chairman, I am not walking away from the club. “The Northern Pride has formed a very important part of my life and I will continue to support the Pride and the Board from afar. “I look forward to sitting in the grandstand as one of their biggest fans for many more games to come and cheering them on to more Championship victories. 2021 will be a new look Pride, with a strong roster of players training under Coach Ty Williams combined with increased sponsorship for the club, with the announcement of the Brothers World of Entertainment sponsorship last week. Williamson will remain in his role as CEO of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, a position that was both demanding and personally rewarding. After this week’s announcement the Pride board
will have an opportunity to announce the new chairman in due course, with the 2021 Annual General Meeting scheduled to take place in February 2021. Williamson’s Time at the Pride: • 2014 Williamson was invited to join the Northern Pride’s Board. That year the Pride won the Queensland Cup defeating Easts Tigers and then the Inaugural NRL State Championship against Penrith. • Contributed to a new constitution for the club in 2015, which included representation from the CDRL, CDJRL and the Cowboys • In 2016 after the retirement of then chair, Terry Mackenroth, Williamson was elected to that vacant position. • Williamson has served the Pride as a Director, with four of those years as Chairman.

Taipans Indigenous Program visits Cape and Torres Strait THE popular Sea Swift Taipans Indigenous Program has completed another successful visit to remote Far North Queensland communities, recently delivering sessions to hundreds of local students on Thursday Island and Bamaga. Headed by Taipans Indigenous Programs Manager and former NBL star Kerry Williams, the program aims to spread healthy living messages to children living in Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait Islands. Since March 2019, the award-winning Sea Swift Taipans Indigenous Program has: • engaged more than 2,000 Indigenous youth in 25 communities • spent more than 150 hours delivering the sessions. CQUniversity Cairns Taipans centre Nate Jawai made the recent visits extra special for the children as part of the regular program across the region, which encourages kids to stay in
school, keep active, and eat healthily. In 2009, Jawai became the first Torres Strait Islander to play in the world-famous National Basketball Association (NBA), and played a key role in the Taipans’ highly-successful 2019-20 NBL season. Williams said the students are always excited to meet the local basketball legend, who grew up in Bamaga. “Nate loves being back home. He is a positive influence for his community, and when the kids hear he is coming, they make sure they get to school, so they do not miss out,” said Williams. “Nate is able to tell his story and address our key message of respect through story. “Nate speaks at assemblies about his journey, and then plays games, hands out T-shirts, and reiterates his respect message – there’s always a lot of excitement from the students.” In the past 18 months, the Sea Swift Taipans Indig-

Diehard attitude to the game IT’S a long way from the Taree Red Rovers on the midNorth coast of New South Wales to the tropical climes of Far North Queensland, however the Prides latest recruit, Jayden Corrigan is feeling very much at home. Recruited by Coach Ty Williams to add additional dimension and pace to an already strong back line, Corrigan has fitted in and starting to find his feet in training. For the past two seasons Cirrigan has played for Norths Devils in Brisbane and Valleys Diehards. Having played the majority of his junior and Cup career at full back, Corrigan is focussed upon earning his spot in the side. Training in the humid Cairns summer is something new for the recruit. “The pace of training at the moment is a lot of running so it’s a little different to what I’m used to.
