Council Grove Public Library

Community, Retreat, Identity

Council Grove, KS.

Spring 23

The Council Grove Public Library forms from a trio of limestone volumes, each delineating the building’s diverse programmed spaces while discreetly containing its core services. Between these solid forms, interspersed voids create a sheltered grove—spaces of pause and quiet connection. Rooftop terraces extend this dialogue upward, offering moments of reflection and visual ties to the surrounding limestone hills and the town’s life below. As a civic landmark and communal threshold, the library is designed to engage with downtown Council Grove and invite all community members into shared spaces for learning, gathering, and contemplation.

Kaw Cultural Center

Connection, Expression, Reverence

Topeka, KS.

Fall 23

The Kaw Cultural Center seeks to reestablish the connection between downtown Topeka and the Kaw River, honoring the deep historical ties of six Native American Nations to the land. The building is shaped around spaces of cultural expression—a council chamber, classrooms, auditorium, and workshops—where traditions and knowledge can be shared and celebrated. Users approach the center through a pathway that weaves into the landscape, guided by an observation tower that serves as a landmark, emerging from the core of governance. As the journey unfolds, the building reveals itself at the river’s edge, with a boldness that honors the river’s significance.
