y r o t s s ’ g n i l May
Hi my name is Mayling. I am 10 years old.
I come from Nicaragua, a country in Central America.
Here I am with my family. My grandmother looks after me.
Finding food is a big problem for us. Droughts, heavy rains and pests also make it difficult to grow food. I sometimes feel unwell because Grandma can’t afford enough healthy food.
Some days all we have to eat is two tortillas, about the size of the palm of my hand.
CAFOD showed women in our area how to keep bees and gave us some bee hives. Grandma now looks after bees.
When there is some honey left over, we can sell it to buy food. I love the honey because it’s sweet and tasty, and it also gives me energy to concentrate at school.
God is important to me because he gives us our daily bread. He is the one who looks after me and helps us to get through the day.
Things to think about… • How do you think Mayling feels when all she has to eat is a tortilla the size of the palm of your hand? • How have the bees helped Mayling? • It is important to remember that what God created is not ours to give, it is for everyone to share. What have you shared today?
