DISTANT

SUFFERING LVVII | i.d. of adjacent skies

one random month of consciousness May 14 – June 14, 2026

hoe kan deze vermoeide lucht mij ademen

how can this worn-out air breathe me

Rezan Habash

On my way from the hospital to the studio, under a heavily over-cast sky, the national news channel reports on the atrocity that has left at least 21 people dead in a Russian attack on Kyiv. It’s the same story every day over & over again: institutional murder and manslaughter all over the world. In Ukraine, Iran, Iraq, Yemen. Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, the West Bank, in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Haiti; it’s an endless list. The realization that these worn-out skies, as my friend the poet Rezan Habash experiences them, connect me with that suffering, is what prompts me to look up for a moment every day. This month I record that.

In the hope that my distant friends also make it somehow through the day alive . . .
