Hidden Sound, Silent Thought

De kunstenaars Margré Steensma (NL) en Yuk Kan Yeung (CN/NL) ontmoetten elkaar via Jorieke Rottier, teamlid van ruimteCAESUUR. Yuk Kan en Margré hebben gedurende juli en augustus samengewerkt in Middelburg. Vanuit nieuwsgierigheid naar elkaars achtergronden, generatieverschillen en manieren van werken, ontstond een artistieke dialoog die leidde tot nieuwe perspectieven en gedeelde ontdekkingen.
De tentoonstelling Hidden Sound, Silent Thought toont zowel bestaande als nieuw gecreëerde sculpturen. Een deel van de nieuwe werken bestaat uit combinaties van bestaande sculpturen, die zijn samengevoegd en opnieuw geïnterpreteerd om tot nieuwe inzichten te komen. Centraal in hun samenwerking staat de inspiratie uit de Chinese scholar rocks (gongshi): stenen die eeuwenlang door geleerden werden verzameld vanwege hun unieke vormen, texturen en gelaagdheid. Deze stenen werden niet enkel gewaardeerd om hun esthetiek, maar ook als dragers van gedachten en innerlijke reflectie.
Daarnaast reageren de kunstenaars op de ruimte zelf van ruimtecaesuur. Zoals Yuk Kan verwoordt: “De muur in de ruimte is zelf al een door mensen gemaakte rots om te bewonderen. Hij draagt een lange geschiedenis in zich, maar staat toch open voor ons om onze ideeën eraan toe te voegen – als momentopnamen in de tijd.”
In een eigentijdse vertaling onderzoeken Steensma en Yeung hoe materiaal, vorm en leegte betekenis dragen, en hoe culturele verschillen juist een bron van verbinding kunnen zijn. De tentoonstelling vormt een ontmoeting tussen werelden en generaties, waarin sculpturen gedachten in stilte dragen én doorgeven.
Artists Margré Steensma (NL) and Yuk Kan Yeung (CN/NL) met through Jorieke Rottier, a team member of ruimteCAESUUR. Yuk Kan and Margré collaborated in Middelburg during July and August. Curiosity about each other's backgrounds, generational differences, and working methods sparked an artistic dialogue that led to new perspectives and shared discoveries.
The exhibition "Hidden Sound, Silent Thought" features both existing and newly created sculptures. Some of the new works consist of combinations of existing sculptures, combined and reinterpreted to generate new insights. Central to their collaboration is the inspiration from Chinese scholar rocks (gongshi): stones collected by scholars for centuries for their unique shapes, textures, and layering. These stones were valued not only for their aesthetics but also as vehicles for thoughts and inner reflection.
Furthermore, the artists respond to the very space of spatial caesura. As Yuk Kan puts it: “The wall in the space is itself a man-made rock to be admired. It carries a long history within itself, yet remains open to us to add our ideas to it—like snapshots in time.”
In a contemporary interpretation, Steensma and Yeung explore how material, form, and emptiness carry meaning, and how cultural differences can actually be a source of connection. The exhibition forms a meeting between worlds and generations, in which sculptures silently carry and transmit thoughts.

Since 1995, some hundred twenty plus exhibitions of contemporary art have been made in ruimteCAESUUR (spaceCAESUUR). From 1999 on at the Lange Noordstraat 67 in Middelburg.
Visual arts, in relation with the contemporary art discourse, are always the guiding principle for an exhibition, but a historical and social perspective also determine our choices.
ruimteCAESUUR stands for the autonomy of art embedded in larger systems, and puts the artist’s oeuvre at the center of organizing its (solo) exhibitions. Young, novice as well as "arrived" artists are offered a platform in order to present their work in a noncommercial environment.
Real meeting and learning from each other play important roles within our annual planning.
ruimteCAESUUR is a private initiative, without any profit motive, with Willy van Houtum and visual artist Hans Overvliet as its core; they form the board of the CAESUUR foundation.
teamCAESUUR is more than completed by the artists Jorieke Rottier and Giel Louws.
The exhibitions also in 2024 will be organized as much as possible in cooperation with art initiatives from other countries such as Lípa Art Collection and Luxfer Open Space, both from the Czech Republic, Gallery Durden and Ray uit Los Angeles, U.S.A., Slipvillan from Sweden, Bloom Gallery in Valencia in Spain, etc. Exchange with Dutch artists ensures reciprocity in this process.
The unique composition of this team crosses borders of art practices, gender and generations.
