context POSE THE QUESTION . . .

From the first day ( 1995 ) Willy van Houtum and I started ruimteCAESUUR, we wanted to develop a program in the form of a triptych, with the aim to install artwork in the public space in the historic centre of Middelburg. Click here for more context [ in English ]. The first part ( 1997 ) was simply donating artworks by 14 visual artists to Middelburg. The second part ( in passingMiddelburg | 2005 – ’06 ) was showing the city how artists partake the city mentally and physically. Thus adding another ‘map’ to the representation of the city. The third part, which is at hand now, is posing the city a number of questions which normally are not enquired. The difference with the previous parts is that we invited people with a variety of intellectual professions: writers, photographers, poets, architects, graphic designers, visual & performance artists, musicians, etc. from Holland, Belgium, Germany, Brazil, Great Britain and Spain. Also a group of students from UCR – Philosophy and Art & Design Track – wants to take part in this third stage; either with the de-sire to make an autonomous proposal or to collaborate with one of the professionals. The projects take place in the public space of Middelburg; the space of CAESUUR functions as a living archive in which the projects are represented. Click here for all individual projects. For each exhibition, Rinus Roepman made a so-called ‘rondje’: his interpretation of the presentation which he glued on the skylight above the door. context van STEL DE STAD EEN VRAAG

Vanaf dag 1 dat Willy van Houtum en ik in 1995 ruimteCAESUUR startten wilde ik een thematisch drieluik maken met kunstwerken in de openbare ruimte van de historische binnenstad van Middelburg. Klik hier voor de Engelstalige catalogus met de geschiedenis en context van het drieluik. Het eerste luik (het nissenproject | 1997) was eenvoudigweg het schenken van hun kunstwerken door 14 kunstenaars [ v/m ] aan Middelburg. Een aantal daarvan siert nog steeds de stad. In het tweede luik ( terloopsMiddelburg | 2005 – ’06 ) gaven kunstenaars, schrijvers, poëten, filo-sofen, etc. een beeld van de rol van de stad Middelburg in hun oeuvre. Zo doende voegden zij een nieuwe ‘kaart’ toe aan de stad. Dit derde luik dat loopt van 1 januari tot en met 31 december 2017 stelt vanuit diverse disciplines vragen aan de stad. Vragen die normaal gesproken niet worden gesteld. Ook aan dit thematische luik stel de stad een vraag doen weer professionals uit diverse vakgebie-den mee: schrijvers, fotografes, dichters, architekten, grafisch ontwerpsters, beeldend kunste-naars, musici, etc. uit Nederland, België, Duitsland, Spanje, Engeland, Brazilië, etc. Ook een groep studenten van U.C.R. neemt deel met autonome projecten of werken samen met de professionals. De openbare ruimte van de stad is het werkgebied van de participanten aan ‘stel de stad een vraag’, de ruimte van CAESUUR hun levend archief. ‘stel de stad een vraag ‘ opende met een video van Núria Búfarull|Spain op het raam van ruimteCAESUUR op 1 januari 2016 om 00:00:01 uur met tekstdelen van de hoogst controversiële tekst van Oscar Wilde | The Preface. [!] is a serious and at the same time extremely naive attempt by Ko de Jonge and Hans Overvliet to [ let ] restore and reinstate the vandalized statue 'The Mill' by Couzijn, a famous Dutch sculptor.

Deze eerste tentoonstelling werd bevolkt door Elis Vermeulen waar zijn mijn zusters? Een vraag die onder meer verwijst naar de opgegeven zustersteden van Middelburg; Ko de Jonge hier kan een huis staan? en parkeerplaats? handelen over een bijna-vergeten verwoesting in de stad ten gunste van de auto; leon riekwell Vermeende schoonheid of dictaat? Hoe kleurrijk mag je zijn? stelt vragen bij het dictatoriale kleurbeleid van de gemeente Middelburg; teamCAESUUR Wessel Couzijn terug in de stad? [!] is een serieuze en tegelijkertijd uiterst naïeve poging van Ko de Jonge en mij om het vernielde beeld ‘De Molen’ van Couzijn te [ laten ] restaureren en te herplaatsen.

poetry festival ’11 poets’ on 20/06/’17 teamCAESUUR requested Jan J.B. Kuipers and Robbert Jan Swiers to organize a poetry festival. They gathered a group of poets and asked them to make a question poem following the theme ‘pose a question to the city’. The poetry festival took place on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Helm, the small square behind the Vleeshal in Middelburg, where the Metamorphosis Class Room is planned to be opened in September. Elis Vermeulen | where are my sisters 2 The second part, Boro | (mending), of Elis’ project about the forgotten sister cities of Middelburg: Nagasaki, Folkestone, Vilvoorde and Glogow. Durk van der Meer | Echo | soundscape • • n n • • | is it safe? a question going physically viral Hans Overvliet | moved into acting? | distant suffering XV | syrian skies revisited [ 2,238 days ] paper collages bridging the effects of the destruction of the inner city of Middelburg and the ongoing wars in f.i. Syria. The work is partly exhibited in De Nieuwe Kerk in Click here for the catalogue distant suffering XV Dance Centre Dazzle Joke Provoost, in cooperation with her dance crew made a choreography that questions the position of young people within the social tissue of Middelburg. The dance was performed on June 10, on the Koorkerkplein, during the City Festivals Middelburg. The video of the performance, projected on the windows of ruimteCAESUUR will end this year project pose a question to the city at December 31 23:59:59. See also page 98.

The words youâ€™d hope you never have to write down. Shortly after each other, Harmen Eijzenga ( on June 8 ) and Fred van den Berge ( on June 14 ) passed away. Two people, each in their own special way, made CAESUUR to what it is and will be. With their wisdom, their thoughts and deeds, in short, with their full presence. We are going to miss Harmen and Fred dearly, but as a consolation, CAESUUR will carry their traces for ever. De zinnen waarvan je hoopt dat je ze nooit hoeft op te schrijven. Kort na elkaar overleden Harmen Eijzenga, op 8 juni en Fred van den Berge, op 14 juni. Twee mensen die elk op hun bijzondere wijze CAESUUR mee-maakten tot wat het nu is en zal worden. Met hun eigen wijsheid, hun gedachten en daden, kortom, met hun volledige aanwezigheid. We gaan Harmen en Fred zeer missen, maar als troost geldt dat ook CAESUUR hun sporen voor altijd in zich draagt en in zich zal dragen.

entr’act | Harry Vandevliet | console #865 | a gift to CAESUUR 'Console', image carrier and carrier of itself as image is the theme that runs consistently through my work. Manufactured in granite, wood, marble, copper, lead and numbered. The numbers correspond to the quantity produced. From the non-existing but numbered, framed certificates are manufactured, as proof of imaginary existence. Over the centuries, the console has functioned as a carrier in an ever-changing manner and changing aesthetics; to serve. In the work of Harry Vandevliet the console is freed from her servitude. He abstracted the console into an autonomous image, gluing it on wood, paper and canvas. It provides a unique gilded number, the gold of the Renaissance. In his latest project he brings lead-made consoles to the public space, as in Italy. The console with homesickness to its origins.’ Fred van der Berge | 2016

‘Console’, drager van beeld alsook drager van zichzelf als beeld is het thema dat als een rode draad door mijn werk loopt. Uitgevoerd in graniet, hout, marmer, roodkoper, lood en genummerd, corresponderen de getallen aan de hoeveelheid geproduceerde. Van de niet-bestaande maar wel doorgenummerde worden ingelijste certificaten vervaardigd, als bewijs van denkbeeldig bestaande. Door de eeuwen heen heeft de console als drager een functie vervuld op steeds nieuwe wijze en veranderende esthetiek; dienstbaar aan. In het werk van Harry Vandevliet is de console bevrijd van haar dienstbaarheid. Hij abstraheerde de console naar een autonoom beeld, verlijmt ze op hout, papier en canvas. Voorziet ze van een uniek verguld nummer, het goud van de Renaissance. In zijn nieuwste project brengt hij uit lood vervaardigde consoles naar de openbare ruimte, zoals in Italië. Anonymized shops in Middelburg; Paola Leenhouts | The Vox – a wooden booth, functioning as a kind of analogue facebook, in which the people of Middelburg can share their questions, dreams, thoughts, etc. The Vox was placed at Plein 1940; Ko de Jonge Colour Space [ Dam Squaire ] | 27 June – 100+ children occupied the Dam Square in order to colorize a grid of dissapeared houses; jen gossé | Where were we last time? – in the public library of Antwerp, jen secretly put 100 ‘reminders’ in books; Jan Moekotte | Street Signs – restauration of unique stree signs, dating from 1850. Joke Provoost developed, after conversations with her dancers, a choreography based on the above question. The Vox stond op Plein 1940; Ko de Jonge KIeurplaatS [ Damplein ] | 27 Juni – 100+ kinderen bezetten het Damplein en kleurden een grid van verdwenen huizen in; jen gossé | Waar waren we alweer gebleven? – in de openbare bibliotheek van Antwerpen verborg jen 100 boekenleggers met deze tekst; Jan Moekotte | mag ’t de originele naam hebben? Restauratie van unieke straatnaambordjes, daterend uit 1850. Dance Centre Dazzle | hoe zit ‘t met mij en de stad? [uit de brief naar de scholen die de gratis kleurboekjes begeleidde ] In het kader van Middelburg800 organiseert ruimteCAESUUR een bijzonder project: Stel de stad een vraag. De meest uiteenlopende activiteiten worden daarbinnen uitgevoerd. Zie daartoe de website caesuur-posethequestion.nl. Ook voor leerlingen van de basisscholen is een speciaal project ontworpen. In dit geval door Ko de Jonge. Als opmaat naar de tentoonstelling Façade 2017 “Face your freedom” werd op het Damplein door ruimteCAESUUR een bijzondere actie georganiseerd waaraan leerlingen van de groepen 5, 6 of 7 deelnamen. De titel van dit evenement is “Kan hier een huis staan?”. Het is een verwijzing naar het verleden van deze plek in de stad, maar tevens een zoektocht naar de toekomst. Er werd op het plein een enorme tekening gemaakt als basis voor de kinderen om in te kleuren, aan te vullen met hun toekomstdromen, etc. Om iedereen enthousiast te maken, kregen de kinderen van de Teeken Akademie Middelburg, de Drvkkery en de Kloveniersdoelen een bijzonder kleurboekje “EEN VRIJE KLEURPLAATS” aangeboden. Daarin kunnen speciale ontwerpen worden gemaakt. Op 27 juni vindt vanaf 13.00 uur vond de uitvoering op het Damplein plaats. Giel Louws Ruach | The Breath Of The City part 2 | The color of the breath. Ruach | De Adem Van De Stad deel 2 | De kleur van de adem. For The Breath Of The City part 2 used the precipitation of the breath of Middelburg on the facade of CAESUUR. On 7-11-2017 I washed the dirt from ruimteCAESUUR, and thickened that moisture. Adding Arabic gum turned this material into watercolor paint. I divided this paint into seven small bottles, used in watercolor pant boxes. The result is "Ruach-brown", a one-time and unrepeatable recipe. This color symbolizes a shared breath of CAESUUR with the city of Middelburg during the project pose the question . . . Voor De Adem Van De Stad deel 2 gebruikte ik de neerslag van de adem van Middelburg op de gevel van CAESUUR. Op 7-11-2017 waste ik het vuil van ruimteCAESUUR, en dikte dat vocht in. Door Arabische gom toe te voegen werd dit materiaal aquarelverf. Deze verf verdeelde ik over zeven napjes gebruikt in aquareldozen. Het resultaat is "Ruach-bruin", een eenmalige en onherhaalbaar recept. Deze kleur symboliseert een gedeelde adem van CAESUUR met de stad Middelburg gedurende het project stel de stad een vraag.

Leni van den Berge Revolution? In early August, Middelburg was startled by two words in a clear blue sky: terror / revolution. It delivered, the PZC reported, according to the principle 1.2, lot, a 'flood of troubled calls'. It was an art project by Dani Ploeger and it would have been better that people before calling first gave it some thought. (or does the terror of primary reaction apply here?) It is now November. The October Revolution of 1917, which also revolutionized the art brought about, has already been broadly remembered. Now, in 2017, Vladimir Mayakovsky climbs de Lange Jan & (crazy) Betje calls us to speak out against the bomb. And I, I have a question to the city: 'What about art? Is it hiding in the fog, or do we opt for a revolutionary élan? " Leni van den Berge | the roof print pers.

Revolutie? Begin augustus werd Middelburg opgeschrikt door 2 woorden in een helderblauwe lucht: terreur/revolutie. Het leverde, meldde de PZC, volgens het principe 1,2, heleboel, een ‘stortvloed aan verontruste telefoontjes’ op. Het betrof een kunstproject van Dani Ploeger en het ware beter geweest eerst even na te denken alvorens te bellen. (of geldt hier de terreur van primair reageren?) Inmiddels is het november. De oktoberrevolutie van 1917, die ook een revolutie in de kunst teweegbracht, is al breeduit herdacht. Nu, in 2017, beklimt Vladimir Majakovski de Lange Jan & roept (gekke) Betje ons op ons tegen de bom uit te spreken. En ik, ik heb een vraag aan de stad: ‘Hoe staat het met de kunst? Zit die in de mist, of kiezen we voor een revolutionair elan?’ Leni van den Berge | de roofprint pers.

(...) and so a memorable evening ended. Around half past ten, I showed out Anja and Robbert Jan as the last people. Outside, a man and a woman, about fifty years old, were looking very focused into the space of CAESUUR. That was pretty strange: the room was fairly empty. Only one wall showed three points and two brackets, an echo of the first sentence of the exhibition by Hans Bommeljé [ Hier bin ich mensch, hier darf ich’s sein ( J.W. von Goethe) ]. Anja, Robbert Jan and I said goodbye, while the man and the woman kept on looking, completely undisturbed. With a lasting, quiet concentration. They turned out to be from France and were spending a week on an art travel through the Netherlands, The Hague: Mondriaan! and finally Duisburg, Germany. 'What a beautiful art space this is. So completely empty and white and full of light. With those enigmatic dots and brackets. We feel that we are looking at ourselves because we can fill the space with our own images and associations; each for ourselves and yet together. ( . . . ) en zo liep een memorabele avond ten einde. Rond een uur of half elf liet ik – als laatsten – Anja en Robbert Jan uit. Buiten stonden een man en een vrouw van rond de vijftig zeer geconcentreerd de ruimte van Caesuur in te kijken. Dat was tamelijk wonderlijk: de ruimte was namelijk volledig leeg. Alleen de wand waarop als echo van de eerste zin van de tentoonstelling van Hans Bommeljé [ Hier bin ich mensch, hier darf ich’s sein ( J.W. von Goethe) ] zijnde drie punten en twee haakjes was overgebleven. Anja, Robbert Jan en ik namen afscheid van elkaar, terwijl de man en de vrouw maar bleven kijken, totaal ongestoord. Met dezelfde verstilde concentratie. Ze bleken uit Frankrijk te komen en waren een week op kunstreis door Nederland, Den Haag: Mondriaan! en tenslotte Duisburg, Duitsland. ‘Wat een prachtige kunstruimte is dit. Zo helemaal leeg en wit en vol van licht. Met die raadselachtige puntjes en haakjes. We hebben het gevoel dat we naar onszelf kijken doordat we de ruimte kunnen vullen met onze eigen beelden en associaties; ieder voor zich en toch samen.’ ‘Zo’n beetje alle tentoonstellingen die we zagen, komen langs. ‘ ‘Het restant van een tekst van Goethe zegt u?’ ‘Hier ben ik mens?’ ‘Hoe prachtig toepasselijk, want dat is wat er kennelijk precies ook met ons gebeurde.’ ‘Mogen wij u bedanken voor dit prachtige plek en dito moment?’ Wanneer ik de deur dichtdoe, komt Harmen bij me langs . . . . zondag 12 november 2017 | Hans Overvliet | tevens gepubliceerd in decreet #15 [ BESLUIT ]
