Whatever the precise situation of the miniature character, the appeal of the underlying idea, the miniature, is great. Perry Nodelman and Susan Stewart, among others, point out the relevance of Claude Lévi-Strauss's dictum that all works of art may be viewed as, essentially, miniatures. Stewart, whose highly theoretical On Longing includes, in a chapter on miniatures, examinations of doll houses and miniature books as well as more conventional texts, considers the miniature to be "a metaphor for the interior space and time of the bourgeois subject". Nodelman, more practical in orientation, identifies the main reason for this appeal: "So when these small beings prevail over insurmountable odds, as they always do, they represent a potent version of the wish-fulfillment fantasy: the very small can triumph over the dangerously large, the very powerless over the exceedingly powerful".

The illusion of mastery is especially significant – the idea that, in Lévi-Strauss’s phrase, the “intelligible dimensions” of a miniature can help us to feel in control in a world that rarely gives us that option. ( … ) The Chapman brothers recreated Goya’s horrifying etchings with remodelled toys, and scattered Nazis through other vitrine collections; in 1995 the Polish artist Zbigniew Libera used Lego to recreate a concentration camp.

A toy is an item that is used in play, especially one designed for such use. Playing with toys can be an enjoyable means of training young children for life in society. (…) Playing with toys is considered to be important when it comes to growing up and learning about the world around us. Younger children use toys to discover their identity, help their bodies grow strong, learn cause and effect, explore relationships, and practice skills they will need as adults. Adults on occasion use toys to form and strengthen social bonds, teach, help in therapy, and to remember and reinforce lessons from their youth. ( …) The act of children's play with toys embodies the values set forth by the adults of their specific community, but through the lens of the child's perspective. Within cultural societies, toys are a medium to enhance a child's cognitive, social, and linguistic learning. (…) in other cultures, toys are used to expand the development of a child's cognition in an idealistic fashion. In these communi-ties, adults place the value of play with toys to be on the aspirations they set forth for their child. In the Western culture, the Barbie and Action-Man represent lifelike figures but in an ima-ginative state out of reach from the society of these children and adults.
