distant suffering XV | SYRIAN SKIES REVISITED [ 2,238 DAYS ] 17/05/1940 – 17/05/2017 is a contribution to the art project ‘pose the question . . . ‘ in the public realm of Middelburg by spaceCAESUUR. For this special occasion I returned to a former strategy: the paper collage, constructed out of existing material, taken from the mass media. I cut these selected images into small strips and subsequently glue them back into geometrical perfect patterns into new combinations. Rolf Bosboom in the Provincial Zeeuwse Courant - in an article about this oeuvre: 'The paper collages force the spectator to look intensively. The collections of cut and reconstructed images result in a new image of very high density. Sometimes you experience recognition - a date taken from a newspaper, a plan and / or information material of exhibitions and museums visited by the artist - but the images themselves are cut up in such a way that any ‘explanation’ is always at great distance. (…) Overvliet with an utmost precision fragmentizes reality. Looking from a distance, the rhythm of the lines and colors predominate. This rhythm constantly changes in relation to the position of the spectator. The more the viewer distances him or herself from the image, the more form goes over into content. The careful way the oeuvre is [re]constructed is a sign of his great devotion.’ distant suffering XV [ 2,238 days ] is the revisited version of the first exhibition of the art-series distant suffering, Syrian skies - 1,000days, 12 A4 prints on Hahnemühle German Etching Paper, 310 g/m², exhibited in the Willem3 in Vlissingen on April 05 & 06 2014. I reused the explosions and their ‘results’ photographed close by, published in de Volkskrant of 27/12/2013 and combined these images with a picture of the Nieuwe Kerk, part of the Abby Complex, which was bombarded by the Nazis on the 17th of May 1940, the day that the old centre of Middelburg went up in flames. One part will be exhibited in the public space of Middelburg. With the help of Art Camping, for the sister part I am investigating a way to present the work somewhere in Syria.
