Labelled “Canada’s Most Patriotic Village”, Arthur was established in the mid-1800’s and is notable for its incredible contributions to WWII. A COMMUNITY YOU WILL BE PROUD TO CALL HOME THE HISTORY OF ARTHUR
ESTABLISHMENT Arthur is named after Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, best known for defeating Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. In the 1840s, Arthur’s first settlers tilled the land together, creating the foundation for a community dedicated to collective success and happiness. This is still an important aspect of life in Arthur that remains today.
A NEW ERA Arthur became a natural market centre for the area’s agricultural production. After the grist mills were established, a post office, church, official newspaper, and school soon followed, ushering in a new era of prosperity for the community. In 1872, Arthur was incorporated as a village.
