In Animation Design, students develop concepts and technical skills in three-dimensional computer modeling and animation, digital video and web design using industrystandard software. Students explore all types of virtual visualizations including text animation and motion graphics, character animation, storytelling and architectural modelling, rendering and animation.

The ability for these eight seniors to work as a cohort paid dividends as they spent one semester crafting research papers and then translating that text into the temporal works you see in this exhibition.

The Animation Design senior works displayed here run the gamut from rotoscoping and pixel art videos to glitch art and traditional frame-by-frame animations. Their themes range from childhood memories of growing up in Abu Dhabi to the friction between contemporary youth culture and traditional ways of life. Most importantly, they discovered the power of narrative while also embracing more abstract and conceptual forms of presentation. The bar has been set and the future animation students will be eager to push the boundaries of art and expression even further.

Aliyah Alawadhi

As an artist, I reconcile philosophical precepts with the prevailing socio-political climate. I utilize the visceral nostalgia of childhood and adolescence in juxtaposition with the harsh realities of power structures and systems that dictate and limit what is “acceptable” to experience.

I am fascinated with the concepts of subcultures and deviancy. Sourcing imagery from archives, pop culture and my surroundings, I illustrate the growing relevancy of “subculture” and how the influence of the internet on the individualist pursuit of identity is often exploited by neoliberal marketing, paradoxically creating a collectivist culture of consumption.

In my senior project, I utilize glitch art, text and auditory elements to explore liminal relationships. I examine the areas of uncertainty in the threshold between the rebelliousness of contemporary Arab youth culture and the mystical nature of traditions, between the perceptions of female hypersexuality and hypermodesty, and between traditional conformity and rapid development.

Everyone has their own way of expressing their inner feelings. Some choose to write about it while others may draw, paint or act. As an animator, I work to combine all of these distinct practices.

My art relates to a number of emotional problems including how a lack of confidence can lead one to becoming an introvert. I draw in order to deal with the stress of everyday life. As an artist, whenever I have new experiences, I like to think that I have a unique point of view. This gives me the ability to translate them into entirely new stories and narratives while still keeping them relatable to my audience.

As an animator and artist, my interest lies within creating interesting stories, plots and narratives. I enjoy giving life to characters and putting them in situations that might not exist in reality. I embrace open-ended stories and plots that invite sequels. Taking viewers on a journey through the eyes of my characters is exactly what I strive to do.

Mystery stories tend to have a great deal of suspense, but more importantly, they involve well-rounded characters, unique settings, a strong plot, a distinctive problem and a novel solution. These elements, including the difficulty of actually executing the production of an animation is what led me to choosing this genre for my senior project. The process of this project was quite the journey. I hope it connects with the viewers and takes them on their own experience.

I became an animator because I’ve always wanted to draw and share my tales with the world. I am particularly drawn to the traditional nature of rotoscoping. This process involves tracing over existing video or film footage in order to create an animation. Many different styles can be experimented with and used in rotoscoping which gives me a chance to try new things all the time.

The purpose of this project is to make the audience feel okay about connecting with fictional characters and situations. With a wide variety of sources, I found elements to connect these very disparate characters and scenes. This project communicates how I feel, but not in a direct way. Emotions like anxiety, frustration, shyness and determination to be honest and open about one’s opinions are present in one form or another in each vignette.

As an artist, what makes my day is touching the audience emotions by my artwork and by bringing them to life. In my point of view art is something needed and mandatory to the world. This is what makes it beautiful, unique and different from other subjects. It leaves an impression on people, especially children. Remembering a specific moment in life that is shaped with colors and feelings is an art piece itself, that creates a depth in emotions that turns it into a masterpiece.

Ever since I was a kid, I have always dreamed to be an artist in many different media, however animation caught my attention, because of the emotions that can leave a memory in people. Thus, I have decided to show my art as memories through 2d animation frame by-frame technique. The concept of my short film is the way of people’s feelings toward their memories guides them to the future that they dream about. I believe that the emotions of specific memories are our guidance in this world, by sharing my own experience.

As an animator, I find myself expressing my thoughts through 2D frame-by-frame animation. I believe in having fun while creating something beautiful and enjoy bringing my characters to life.

In particular, I’m quite interested by the golden age of pirates and buccaneers. What spiked my attention towards it is the contrast between the carefree life of pirates and comradery that is built upon sailing the seas with the hardships that fall along the way. I built those characters and showed them in many of my previous works and it is no surprise I decided to include them in my final project as well.

What is different is my decision to work with the pixel art aesthetic. Pixel art caught my attention in the painstaking way in which it is put together and especially taking into consideration how it would work and be executed in animation.

Having grown up with animated films, cartoons, and video games, I was always fascinated and drawn to them when I was a kid. It wasn’t until years later that I wanted to know animation from behind the scenes and how these works are created. How are these characters designed? Who writes these stories? How can motion (and emotion) be captured in so many creative and technical ways?

The narrative of my project borrows from three genres: comedy, action and mystery. Based on a game that I have long played, we follow a murder case through the courts. Only through the careful questioning of witnesses can we hope to find out who the real culprit is. The purpose is to share with the audience that sometimes games, board games and video games can involve real-life scenarios which you might face and you wouldn’t know what’s going to happen next.

Creating art comes from an innate need to express myself—an act that is best communicated through animation. Animation gives the illusion of a world that cannot exist in reality and invites anyone to join in. I frequently resort to vibrant colors because they reflect the kind of energy that I want to invoke, and my artistic style is a balance of naturalism and stylistic interpretation. With color as such a powerful narrative element, it furthers my storytelling to create a compelling atmosphere.

My project is concerned with the popular culture of the Emirates from the early 2000s. It compiles some of the most defining features that marked the childhood of any kid growing up in Abu Dhabi including afterschool visits to the grocery store, trading stickers with friends and playing video games. With the tremendous amount of development this country has witnessed, I pay homage to these shared experiences.
