Notes from the Director • It’s clinic time again! We are expecting another great turnout as we move to Edmond this year.

• For the latest on the clinic speakers and schedules, go to oklahomacoaches.org.

• On Saturday, July 25th, we will induct our newest class of Hall of Fame coaches. This special evening will honor our inductees and celebrate the OCA. The Hall of Fame banquet will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Nigh University Center on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma.

Doors will open at 6:10 p.m., and the banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. Contact the office for tickets.

• Registration will begin at 11:00 am on Sunday, July 26th. It will close at 10:30 on Thursday, July 30th. Don’t forget that registration will be closed during the OCA business meeting on Tuesday, July 28th.

• If you plan to register at the clinic, please refer to the instructions provided later in this magazine.

Follow the instructions carefully to help Lea and our staff make the process as smooth as possible. Because these registrations occur after the preregistration deadline, please understand that our office will need time to process them after the clinic has concluded and there is no guaranteed date that coaches will receive their passes.

• Upon arrival, coaches who preregistered should check in at the Preregistration room (1890 Room). Coaches who still need to register should report to the Registration room (Cherokee Room). Notebooks and wristbands will be distributed at these locations, and a wristband is required for admission to all meetings.

• Coaches who preregistered will receive an email with their new OCA card between July 15th and July 25th. You will show your new digital card at preregistration and have the barcode scanned.

• Be aware that we are collecting data at preregistration and registration for the City of Edmond. Be patient with this process as this data will justify Edmond’s investment in the OCA clinic and games.

• The exhibit booths will open on Monday, July 27th at 9:00 a.m. and will close after lunch on Wednesday, July 29th. Be sure to stop by and visit our exhibitors and let them know how much we appreciate their support and what they do for coaches.

• Our corporate partners will all be on Corporate Row at the clinic this year. Please stop by and visit them. They have provided funds, equipment, and/or uniforms to the OCA for the clinic, All State Games, and our organization. We could not do what we do for our coaches and athletes without them.

• We would like to thank all the venues that are hosting the All State Games this year. Without their help, it would be impossible to have the games. This year our host includes Kickingbird Golf, Edmond Center Court (tennis), Edmond Schools Aquatic Center at Mitch Park (swimming), Edmond North High School (wrestling) and the University of Central Oklahoma (volleyball, basketball, football, cheer).

• We are looking forward to working with the City of Edmond, UCO and the Hilton Garden Inn as the clinic returns to the OKC area for the first time since 2008.

• REMINDER: The OCA office is closed the week after the clinic; August 3rd – 7th.

Digital Passes should be sent out around July 15th. You and your Guest should receive an email with directions on how to download the OCA Pass.

Coaches: Please create your login/password to enter the OCA Info hub. There you can edit your personal info and add your Guest and Guest’s email for their Guest pass. Only those who have added their Guest’s name and email will receive one.

Retired Coaches: Your physical paper passes and Guest passes should also be mailed around July 15th. We will mail those to the address we have on file for you.

Coaches, Former Coaches and Heroes

Chad Chronister, Kirk Moore and Mark Green

By now, unless you’ve been out of the country and out of touch with civilization, you’ve heard about the heroics of Kirk Moore, Pauls Valley High School Principal.

Throwing caution to the wind, Moore rushed a would-be school shooter to a bench, taking a bullet in the leg along the way.

What some don’t know is that before he became a principal, Moore was a coach, as were the two men who assisted him in this effort.

A graduate of Pauls Valley High, Moore is now in his 37th year as a staff member. He played for Tim Reynolds in high school, then assisted him in football as he began his own coaching career. He also coached with Rick 12

Clark.

Football was not his only coaching endeavor. He also assisted in basketball and baseball, serving the various sports for 20 years at his alma mater before being named athletic director.

He stayed for 12 years as A.D. before being named principal. He has held that position for the last five years.

Chad Chronister, Moore’s assistant principal, was an integral part of the episode, as he helped Moore restrain the would-be-shooter.

A graduate of Wynnewood High School, Chronister has been a staff member at Pauls Valley for 32 years.

He assisted in football, basketball and golf. He served as the head boys basketball coach for three years. He also OKLAHOMA COACH MAGAZINE

assisted with the boys and girls golf teams from 1999 until 2014, before assuming the head coaching position from 2014 through 2023.

These two men are humble about their reaction to this event, but there’s still another staff member who was there, a man who asks for no accolades, even though he deserves them as well.

Mark Green is a Pauls Valley graduate, who spent all his school years as a Panther. He began his teaching career at Wynnewood, where he spent five years before returning home to Pauls Valley to teach science. His classroom is just down the hall from the office. He literally crawled through a window and rushed to the scene when he heard shots.

Mark does more than teach science. He was an assistant tennis coach for two years before being named the head coach. He served in that capacity for 19 years before officially giving it up at the end of this school year. During that span, his boys team made it to the state tournament all 19 years, while the girls advanced 18 times. He also coaches the trap shooting team.

With all three of these educators having coaching experience, the obvious question is: Did any of this coaching training or experience help in reacting to this situation?

istrators also prepare for the worst when it comes to school violence. “I had thought that maybe sometimes we over-prepare. We do twice as many drills as the state requires, but after I saw how our staff responded to this incident, I am thankful we prepared the way we did,” he emphasized.

He went on to say that remaining calm, taking care of the kids and notifying the parents were handled so well by the entire staff that he is thankful for all the time spent preparing.

Moore went on to add that the fact that he and Chronister have been together for 32 years enables them to know what each other is thinking. “We have an instinct to protect the kids. Being together this long we behave like brothers,” he related.

Chronister went on to add that decisions that have to be made on a daily basis as a coach helped prepare them to deal with situations that may arise.

Green re-iterated that dealing with parents in stressful situations as a coach helped prepare him for this extreme event. He’s the one who called 911 and helped clear the school afterwards.

In a lighter tone, Moore told the story about when he was the head girls coach, Chronister and Chris Caldwell were his assistants. “It took us a year and a half to win a game.”

In one of the more challenging games, the Lady Panthers were playing Tecumseh. It was late in the first quarter. Caldwell leaned over and quietly said, “Do you know we haven’t got the ball past half court yet?”

Although they didn’t experience much success early on, he went on to say he was proud of the fact that they never had a girl quit the team.

When asked about giving advice July 2026

to young coaches, Moore believes it’s important to establish a network.

“Make good friends. If coaches have any friends at all, it’s other coaches.”

He said most of the calls he received after the incident were from members of the coaching establishment he had connected with over the years, coaches who are now lifelong friends.

“We stole all the good coaching ideas from other coaches over the years,” Moore chuckled as he reminisced about his coaching background.

Another bit of advice from Moore for young coaches is “Don’t feel you have to start at the top. You learn to coach at the junior high level. It’s amazing how much you learn by coaching that age level,” he emphasized.

Chronister added that young coaches don’t need to try to move up the ladder too fast. He believes that a solid foundation is important before making that next big move.

One of the enamoring qualities of the Pauls Valley School System, according to Moore, is the fact that “We’ve been fortunate to have school board members and administrators who have confidence in us to have input into naming our successors when we leave a position. They’re hometown people who get it.”

Over the years, many coaches have been unfairly criticized for climbing the ladder of school administration simply because of their coaching background. In reality, a coaching background is ideal training for anyone aspiring to enter school administration.

Dealing with unhappy parents for one reason or another, learning to respond with character in victory or defeat, working hard to achieve goals, all of these are excellent life experiences OKLAHOMA COACH MAGAZINE

for any school administrator.

The coaching fraternity is one of the most interesting in all of education. While these people are bitter enemies between the lines, many remain lifelong friends after the last whistle blows. This is a lesson we all could learn.

The following quote sums up my feelings on these three brave men. It’s from Douglas Adams. It goes like this: “I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.”

Black Coaches Association Played by the Rules

by Doyle Greteman Editor’s Note: The following article contains much material that was taken from a thesis that was written in 1949. Some of the terms that referred to people of color that were considered acceptable then are not commonly used today. In the interest of accuracy, we will do our best to quote the author, while respecting all coaches, past and present.

As impressive as the performance of African-American athletes in Oklahoma over the past 70 years or so, many young people have little knowledge of the fact that until 1955, they weren’t even allowed to compete in OSSAAsponsored activities.

That doesn’t mean they didn’t compete for championships. They were just limited to competing against other schools in what was then called the “Negro Oklahoma Interscholastic Association.”

It also doesn’t mean they didn’t have guidelines to follow, similar in many ways to the rules of today. In fact, the men who organized this association were true professionals, doing things the right way in order to develop the young students under their tutelage.

Moses F. Miller, legendary Douglass Trojans head football coach, did more than just coach football. He is also responsible for a well-researched thesis about the history of the Black Oklahoma Coaches Association, officially titled “A History of the Negro Oklahoma Interscholastic Athletic Association.”

Miller, born in 1907, attended Douglass Schools in Ardmore and lettered in four sports. He starred at Langston University and served as captain of Lions teams his last two seasons.

He began his teaching and coaching at Crescent Douglass in 1932, later coaching at Okmulgee Dunbar. He also served as principal at Tuskahoma before his tenure at Oklahoma City Douglass, where he stayed for 17 seasons. During his tenure there, he won OIAA (Oklahoma Interscholastic Athletic Association) championships in 1947, 1945, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, and 1955.

After school integration, the black athletes began to compete in the OSSAA playoffs, and he led the Trojans to the Class 2A title in 1956.

In 1955, Miller’s Trojans competed in the first ever integrated football game, going against Capitol Hill, coached by the legendary C.B. Speegle.

On November 3, 1955, more than 8,000 fans were in attendance as Capitol Hill scored in the final seconds to win, 136. It was the end of a 46 game winning streak for the Trojans.

Miller was promoted to Vice Principal at Douglass in 1962, relinquishing his head coaching duties. He was subsequently inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Hall of Fame in 1971.

While working on his Masters Degree at the University of New Mexico in 1949, Miller compiled a detailed history of the role black schools and black athletes played in the history of Oklahoma sports. Some of this story will be direct quotes from his thesis. Here is one example: “The Negro athlete appeared on the scene about 1890 and has since that time made his contribution in the various athletic contests. The debut of the Negro came with the participation of W.T.S. Jackson and W.H. Lewis, two Negro boys who played football at Amherst College and has carried down OKLAHOMA COACH MAGAZINE

to participation of Negroes in the 1948 Olympic games in London, England.”

In 1949, when his thesis was written, 72 high schools comprised of all-black players were members of the organization. According to Miller, until 1906 there were no organized black high school or college associations for the promotion of athletics. He described the advent of these organizations as follows: “In 1906 there met in Washington, D.C. several educators who planned an association of colored schools for athletic purposes. It was called the Interscholastic Athletic Association of the Middle Atlantic States.”

From this more college associations began to grow. Among the more well-known organizations was the Southwestern Athletic Conference of Colleges in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

In the early days, Miller writes that “Sportsmanship was only an occasional practice, and officials of ability and worth were rare. With the formation of these organizations, a premium was placed on sportsmanship, and “practices have worked to make sportsmanly conduct a prominent outcome.”

The growth of high school organizations did not directly evolve from the colleges. Howard High School in Wilmington, Delaware, was one of the first high school organizations for black athletes. They joined with several other high schools in Maryland and Virginia to form the South Atlantic High School Athletic Association. Miller stated that this organization “appears to be the first Negro high school athletic association formed.”

its high school athletic program after World War 1. Oklahoma soon followed, along with Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Alabama. In Miller’s opinion, Texas and Oklahoma seemed to have the best organization.

When these organizations formed, the constitutions required that athletes must be bona fide students of the school they represent. Age was an issue, with no state organizations permitting players to be over 22 years of age.

There were only three black secondary schools in Oklahoma in 1907, Douglass in Oklahoma City, Favor High School in Guthrie, and Langston High School, located on the campus of what was then called the Colored Agricultural and Normal University at Langston, Oklahoma.

Coaches at these schools were H.A. Berry of Douglass, George Kerry of Favor, and Sam Saddler, a student coach at Langston.

In these early days, the boys who participated in athletics came to school only on days when games were to be played. There were very few rules concerning eligibility or attendance, and age was not a factor.

As the state’s population grew, more black high schools were added.

By 1914 Tulsa, Nowata, and Muskogee were competing in baseball and football. After World War 1, Miller noted that schools were established in El Reno, Boley, Ardmore, Claremore, Chickasha, Okmulgee, Luther, Shawnee, and Sapulpa. These schools all competed in some kind of athletic program.

As more schools were added, administrators realized that there needed to be some kind of organization established to regulate the competition. Unfortunately, many of the early records have been lost or destroyed, making it difficult to trace the early beginnings of the Association.

H.A. Berry, the former coach at Douglass High School in Oklahoma City, was one of the first to demand accountability. He insisted that if an athlete were to represent a school he should be under 21, a resident of the July 2026

school district in which the school that he represented was located, limited to five years participation in any one sport, passing in three-fourth of his subjects, required to carry not less than the minimum load of subjects, and required to maintain his amateur standing.

In 1924, according to Miller, S.E. Williams, coach at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, and L.L. McGhee, coach at Douglass High School of Oklahoma City, took responsibility for drafting a set of rules and regulations for some kind of athletic association among the schools.

In 1926 the constitution was completed and adopted. The first basketball tournament sponsored by the Negro Oklahoma Interscholastic Athletic Association was held at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa.

Langston University played a big role in the early development of this association. Since many of the athletes who graduated from the segregated schools attended Langston, it was a perfect fit.

At that time, approximately 90% of the coaches were graduates of Langston.

Lee K. Anderson, secretary of the Oklahoma High School Athletic Association, was given credit by Miller for advising the founders in matters regarding to eligibility, etc.

Miller firmly believed that high school principals played a vital role in the development of this organization.

He emphasized the fact that this unselfish group of men stressed fair play, sportsmanship, and high ideals.

From the very beginning, there was a discrepancy in the size of schools competing against each other. The big schools, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Muskogee had an unfair advantage, according to the smaller schools, because of sheer numbers. Therefore, in 1943, the association voted to establish three separate divisions, more evenly dividing the competition between schools according to enrollment.

With the advent of World War II, many of the young black athletes went to war. Upon their return, many of them had exceeded the age of 22, and OKLAHOMA COACH MAGAZINE

wanted to continue playing. In what must have been a very difficult decision, the board kept the age limit the same, denying these young men, who had valiantly served their country, a chance to continue playing. They felt there would simply be too much of an age discrepancy in them and some of the younger players.

The Association followed many of the same rules that are recognized today by the OSSAA, including residency, recruiting, etc. Participation was limited to 10 semesters, with students being able to compete as early as seventh grade.

An interesting note is that in the 1940’s, Oklahoma teams won four consecutive national championships in basketball, including Douglass High School in 1945, Booker T. Washington High School of Cushing in 1946, and Booker T. Washington High School of Tulsa in 1947 and 1948. Booker T. Washington of Tulsa has continued that tradition to this day.

Miller had little reason to believe that anything would change in regard to segregation of schools. Keep in mind he wrote his thesis in 1949, five years before the Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling. Therefore he continually worked for progress in policies in regard to building young men in sportsmanship and character.

After the Supreme Court decision in 1954, schools began to gradually integrate into the formerly segregated white schools, and by 1958, the Negro Oklahoma Interscholastic Athletic Association had dissolved.

In 1973, Douglass High School officially named its stadium after Moses Miller. When the new stadium was built in 2007, it also carried his name.

Because of the foundation laid by men like Moses F. Miller, many young black athletes have gone on to successful careers, both in and out of athletics.

We owe a great deal to men like this, who, in spite of living in a time when they were treated unequally in most facets of our public education system, were able to not only succeed, but achieve excellence! They played by the rules!

As the OCA All-State Games and Summer Clinic roll into Edmond for five days in late July, the blue-ribbon start to the festivities will be a salute to the people who have helped make the organization a national standard for high school coaches and their athletes.

The 59th OCA Hall of Fame banquet raises the curtain on All-State Week, recognizing 13 individuals who have devoted their careers to furthering the athletic and academic experience of Oklahoma youth.

Founded in 1934, the Oklahoma Coaches Association enshrined its first Hall of Fame class in 1967. The OCA Hall of Fame was the first of its kind in the nation.

Including the 13 to be honored this year, the Hall of Fame will total 643.

The first class of inductees numbered 15.

Three times in its first decade, the Hall of Fame welcomed classes of 19 honorees.

The 2026 honorees: Jay Arneson – Coached wrestling for 29 years, beginning in 1973. Won state championship at Owasso in 1978 before moving to Yukon for 24 years.

Coached 1980 All-State West squad.

Kenny Bare – Recorded more than 900 basketball victories with boys and girls teams during 41 years in education.

His Velma-Alma girls won state titles in 2001, 2002. He has 641 wins with boys. President of Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association.

Daryn Brantley – Former president of Oklahoma Football Coaches Association. Coached at Bray-Doyle, Dibble, Rush Springs, Marlow. In his 30th year, is now AD and Transportation Director at Marlow.

Derald Glover – Coached Bristow girls to basketball championships in 1997, 1999 and runner-up spots in 1995, 1998, with 13-year record of 261-83.

Member of Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association (2013). Former superintendent at Bristow, Fort Gibson.

Ed Lewis – Ranks No. 5 among alltime Oklahoma boys basketball coaches with 801 wins in 45 seasons at his alma mater, Roland. Coached three runner-up teams. Active coach and AD at Roland.

Lee Ann Musgrove – Made track and cross country coaching stops at Purcell, Ardmore, Wynnewood, Pauls Valley before retiring in 2018. Won state titles with Ardmore girls 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000. In 2009, became first female inducted into Oklahoma Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Scott Raper – Joins his late father, Dub Raper (inducted 2001) in the Hall of Fame. In a 20-year basketball head-coaching career, made stops at Westmoore, Alva, Oklahoma Centennial, Yukon, Bishop McGuinness. Won OKLAHOMA COACH MAGAZINE

state championships at Centennial, 2011, 2012, with a runner-up at Westmoore, 1989. Retired after 30 years coaching.

Larry Taylor – Coached 35 years at Hollis, from which he graduated in 1967, leading boys basketball (17 years), football (5 years), track (13 years).

Had a basketball record of 355-97 that included 1998 state championship and three runners-up. All-State coach 1990, Faith 7 coach 1998. He died in April at the age of 76.

Pete Williams – In 13 years as head coach, he worked at Dale, Lamont, Anadarko, Choctaw, Konawa. Coached baseball, boys and girls basketball and track. Won two state championships in boys track. Member Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Official OCA All-State ring provider for 30 years.

Rick Wilson – The second most successful girls basketball coach in Oklahoma, trailing only Bertha Frank Teague. He has 956 wins and seven state championships. Only coach to lead 10 different schools to state tournament, and in every classification (6A through B). Member Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Distinguished Service Dale Patterson – After seven years coaching football at Cushing and his alma mater Okmulgee, moved to Northeastern A&M as head coach for 10 seasons. Inducted into National Junior ColJuly 2026

lege Athletic Association Football Hall of Fame (2005) and NEO A&M Athletics Hall of Fame (2011). Received Merv Johnson Integrity in College Coaching Award, 2004.

Barry Switzer – Earned induction into National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame in 2001 after coaching University of Oklahoma to three national championships (1974, 1975, 1985) and the Dallas Cowboys to Super Bowl victory (1995). His 16-year record at OU, 157-29-4. Dallas record, 45-26.

Special Service Glenn Smith – Served as head trainer and director of Sports Medicine at Oral Roberts University, 1973-2011, and OCA All-State trainer 30 years. During 59-year career, worked as trainer at Northeastern A&M and Oklahoma State. ***** There was a seismic shift in the Oklahoma City basketball landscape during

the spring. Two powerhouse programs — Millwood and Carl Albert – underwent coaching changes that involved top-level luminaries and a spate of gold balls.

To start, Jay Price announced his retirement after 23 seasons at Carl Albert. He put together a record of 486146 while leading the Titans to state championships in 2007, 2016, 2021 and runner-up finishes in 2015, 2023, 2026.

Price is a Carl Albert alum, having played basketball under his father, Pat Price.

Jay went into coaching and made his first stop at Choctaw. He began his 11year stay as an assistant before moving into the head position.

In a 34-year career, he registered a record of 561-261.

His replacement was found at Millwood in the person of Dorrian Williams, no stranger to on-court success.

In his three seasons at Millwood, Williams won back-to-back state championships after a runner-up debut. As a player at Douglass, he was a point guard on 2010 and 2011 championship teams.

He had a 69-16 record as he gave Millwood its state record 19th basketball state title.

Next man up at Millwood is Xavier Henry, former Putnam City McDonald’s All-American and five-year NBA pro.

Henry starred on 2008 and 2009 state championship teams at Putnam City before playing a year at the University of Kansas. He was a first-round NBA draft pick in 2010. His final year as a pro was 2017 with the Oklahoma City Blue, GLeague affiliate of the Thunder.

He landed his first coaching job at Oklahoma City Grant and endured a tedious 1-22 start. He followed that, however, with a 15-9 success story in 2025-26.

He takes over a program that has won four of the last five Class 3A championships. ***** Mick Wilson retired in April after five years as Tulsa Public Schools director of athletics and accepted a similar role with Rejoice Christian School in Owasso.

The 60-year-old Wilson had been the Tulsa AD since 2021 when he succeeded the retiring Gil Cloud.

Rejoice Christian has been a member of the OSSAA for 15 years.

Jay Price ally famous after hitting a World Series home run in 1993, was inducted in June into the NFHS National High School Hall of Fame.

At the Salt Lake City ceremony, Carter was one of 12 honorees. Also, he became the 12th Oklahoman to be enshrined by the National Federation of High School Association.

Carter was a four-sport athlete at Millwood. He starred on the baseball diamond for three seasons at Wichita State before being selected by the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the MLB draft in 1981.

The highlight of his 16-year, 5-time All-Star career came in 1993 when his walk-off, three-run home run gave the Toronto Blue Jays their second straight World Series championship.

Carter joins these other Oklahomans in the NFHS High School Hall of Fame: Bertha Frank Teague, 1983 Johnny Bench, 1986 Bill Blackburn, 1990 J.C. and the local gentry.

Nowadays, he can sometimes be found pitching phones to the senior population.

The 65-year-old former high school and college coach is in a rotation of television ads extolling the virtues of Consumer Cellular.

He says he is accepting no payment for his appearance in the commercials.

Nor is he expected to give up his role as analyst for the men’s basketball team at Oklahoma State University.

The cellular provider, he said, just happens to be an entity in which he solidly believes.

For the last four years, Hinson has served as NIL administrator for OSU. During that time, he said he had become dissatisfied with his personal cell phone service. He had seen a few Consumer Cellular TV commercials and decided to give the company a try.

A month or so into his service, he received a query seeking comment on his satisfaction.

Hinson, always known as a loquacious individual, replied with bubbly enthusiasm.

Almost immediately, he was contacted and asked if he would comment publicly.

Of course, he said. He had been commenting publicly about his basketball teams for years. Decades. Going back to Bishop Kelley High School in Tulsa in the 1980s. Extending through his head-coaching college stops at Oral Roberts (1997-99), Missouri State (19992008) and Southern Illinois (2012-19).

Hinson was invited to audition before Consumer Cellular representatives.

He then advanced to the filming stage in Midwest City.

He was confronted there with staff in charge of makeup, hair, clothing and script, he recalled.

He balked at reading the script. After all, he had spent 35 years or so in front of microphones, hosting his coaching shows, responding to media questions.

“I don’t want to read something,” he told the producers. “Just tell me what you want me to say, and I’ll do it.”

The session obviously worked.

Filming began immediately.

Within a couple of hours, Coach Barry Hinson had morphed into TV spokesman Barry Hinson.

His presence, his command of the moment charmed the TV crew.

The first airing of the commercial triggered a barrage of phone calls to Hinson.

First came his former boss, Bill Self.

The Kansas coach was standing near a supermarket counter in Las Vegas when Hinson the pitchman appeared on an overhead television screen.

Self quickly telephoned Hinson. So did one of Hinson’s classmates at Marlow High School.

“From Maine to Texas, I heard from people,” Hinson said.

As impressed as company representatives were with Hinson’s comfortable, easy-going style in front of the camera, they were again fascinated with his decision to forego payment for his appearance.

“I told them that I did not want to be seen as a paid pitchman,” he said.

“I would do it because I believe in the service.”

Selling recruits and families on his basketball philosophy just might be more difficult than hawking cell phone service.

clock can be the difference of winning the game. With the help of Southern Nazarene University’s Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership program, Taylor Matlock of Colbert High School continues to find himself on the winning side of the scoreboard.

A high school graduate of Valliant in 2011, Matlock earned his undergraduate degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University prior to entering education and the challenging demands of coaching at Colbert.

“I was coaching boys and girls baseball, basketball and softball grades four, five and six,” said Matlock. “We had games scheduled almost everyday but Wednesday.”

With a move to become an assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Colbert possible, timing was everything.

“My principal at the time, Stephanie Carleton told me about the Master’s program at Southern Nazarene, “ said Matlock.
