Eureka Springs Blues Party brings soul to town

The sounds of blues, rock and funk will echo through the Ozarks when the Eureka Springs Blues Party returns May 29 – June 1, for four days of live music downtown.

The main event on Saturday, May 31, at The Auditorium will feature two major artists for one ticket: Ruthie Foster, who just won the 2025 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album, and Anders Osborne, the acclaimed New Orleans songwriter and guitarist.

Foster first appeared at the Eureka Springs Blues Weekend in 2012, and her return marks a major highlight for the festival. Osborne’s mix of soulful lyrics and gritty guitar work has earned him a loyal following and adds to a Saturday night bill that’s one of the biggest in Blues Party history.

Altogether, this year’s festival features more than 20 performances across stages and clubs throughout Eureka Springs, with national acts and fan favorites taking part.

The action begins Thursday, May 29,

with a full evening of live music and the Ben E. Keith Street Party in Basin Spring Park, where Patrick Sweany will take the stage. This free outdoor show kicks off the festival with a high-energy set in the center of town.

BluesLand takes over Basin Spring Park all four days of the festival, serving as the central spot for vendors and a lively street-side atmosphere. On Friday, free live music adds to the scene, making it a great time to catch performances in the heart of downtown. The rest of the weekend, BluesLand stays active with vendors and festival energy.

Friday night’s headliner at The Auditorium is Indigenous, joined by special guest Monte Montgomery, known for his unique acoustic guitar style. Earlier Friday evening, The Chambers DesLauriers Band performs in the Barefoot Ballroom at the Basin Park Hotel, with another set scheduled for Saturday’s late-night Funk Party Upstairs at Grotto.

Thursday night, DK Harrell, the Blues

Music Award winner for Best Emerging Artist, takes the stage. Harrell has been turning heads with his modern take on classic blues and brings strong momentum into the weekend.

In addition to the scheduled headliners, bars and clubs across Eureka Springs will feature live blues music throughout the weekend, giving guests even more opportunities to catch performances in a variety of settings — from small clubs to latenight jam sessions.

The festival wraps up on Sunday, June 1, with the traditional blues sendoff at Chelsea’s with Patrick Sweany, bringing together musicians and fans one last time before closing out the weekend.

With headline shows, outdoor stages, street parties and music filling the town, the Eureka Springs Blues Party continues to grow as one of Arkansas’ top music weekends. For tickets, schedules and updates, visit www.eurekaspringsbluesparty.com.

eureka SprinGS and the BlueS

Taking a look back at the rich legacy of Blues performances in Eureka Springs

Long before it was called the Blues Party, Eureka Springs had already established itself as a destination for serious blues fans.

The city’s tradition of blues festivals began in the 1990s with the Eureka Springs Blues Festival, a grassroots event that grew into a long-standing celebration of the genre. Over time, it became known as the Eureka Springs Blues Weekend, before eventually evolving into today’s Eureka Springs Blues Party — but through every change, the heart of the event has remained the same: top-tier artists, live music on every corner and a welcoming town that knows how to host a festival.

The stages of Eureka Springs have seen performances from some of the most respected names in blues history. From Bo Diddley and Koko Taylor to Mavis Staples, Pinetop Perkins and the Blind Boys of Alabama, the city has been a consistent stop on the touring circuit for artists who helped define the genre. Robert Cray, Shemekia Copeland, Keb’ Mo’, Jimmy Thackery, Tab Benoit and Samantha Fish are just a few of the many who’ve made their mark here.

In 2012, a relatively unknown Ruthie Foster took the stage during the Blues Weekend. Even then, her blend of blues, soul and gospel stood out. Since that time, her career has continued to climb — earning her multiple accolades, widespread acclaim and most recently, a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

Her return to Eureka Springs in 2025 as a headline act is a full-circle moment for both Foster and the event and a reminder of how Eureka Springs has long recognized rising talent before the rest of the world catches on.

Beyond the big names, the festival’s reach has always extended well past the main stage. The unique layout of Eureka Springs — with its historic downtown, small clubs, outdoor spaces and walkable streets — made it a natural fit for a music event that lives in the whole town. Visitors could catch an afternoon set in Basin Spring Park, then wander into a tucked-away venue for an impromptu jam session or a late-night show.

Over the years, the event has welcomed a wide range of talent — classic and modern alike. Artists like Honeyboy Edwards, Coco Montoya, The Cate Brothers, John Hammond, Charles Thomas, Victor Wainwright and Hubert Sumlin have all

contributed to the rich musical history here.

The event has also embraced the next generation of players, helping introduce names like Cedric Burnside, DK Harrell, Fiona Boyes, Brandon Santini and Alvin Youngblood Hart to appreciative crowds.

The legacy of blues in Eureka Springs

is measured not just in the names on past posters, but in the way the music has become part of the fabric of the city. Year after year, it draws fans, artists and first-time visitors who leave with a deeper appreciation for the genre — and for the small Arkansas town that continues to honor it.

The Center Street Block Party Returns

TEureka Springs Historical Saturday’s at 11:00 a.m.

he Center Street Block Party returns on Saturday, May 31, from noon to 4 p.m., featuring a beer tasting and a performance by the Brad Absher Band. This lively gathering adds to the downtown atmosphere, bridging the gap between daytime events and the big shows later that evening.

The best part? It’s for a good cause. The block party benefits Eureka Springs Community Center, where you’ll find locals playing pickleball, hosting events and working out in the fitness center yearround.

“The block party is the Saturday event for the Blues Party Weekend,” said Anna Smedley, executive director of the Eureka Springs Community Center.

4127 East Van Buren

A 60-minute walking tour through a peaceful and well-maintained setting covering many historical remnants led by period-dressed guides.

Smedley is excited about the beer tasting, a ticketed event that costs $30.

“That will also include bites and treats from renowned Eureka Springs local chefs,” Smedley said.

Smedley thanked all the community center’s supporters. The community center is located at the site of the old Eureka Springs High School and features an office park, the Museum of Eureka Springs Art, the Eureka Springs Farmers Market, community meeting rooms, locker rooms, a fitness center and more.

“We’re preserving a historic campus while improving the quality of life in our community,” Smedley said. “What an amazing thing that we’re building for our community together.”

How did you find Eureka Springs?

Dale: We were looking where we wanted to go, and we decided to head down to Louisiana. We stayed at a place called Bayou Pigeon, which is deep in Cajun country and spent …

Wanda: ... five weeks there.

Dale: Then, we came here because, well ...

Wanda: ... it sounded interesting.

Dale: It’s historic, all the hiking and the Civil War. We’re going to Pea Ridge. I have a huge passion for the Civil War.

What’s your favorite food so far?

Wanda: We just got in last night, so we picked the first thing we saw, and it was Bubba’s and we had a lovely experience. I had the Cuban sandwich.

Dale: The ribs were amazing. The food was great.

Where are you staying?

Wanda: The Heartstone Inn. So far, it’s really nice.

How would you describe the vibe of town?

Dale: It seems to be laid back and relaxed. We saw there’s a noise ordinance when we came in, so I suspected it will be quiet in the evening.

Wanda: We feel like we’re just starting to explore, but we love what we see so far. It’s beautiful, old buildings everywhere.

Dale: I love the architecture. I like the history.

Describe Eureka Springs in three words.

Dale: Quiet, quaint and historic.

What does ARTrageous mean to you?

It's time for the May Festival of Arts in Eureka Springs, with events happening all month long!

Check out the May calendar on Pages 16-17. One highlight will be the annual ARTrageous Parade, to be held Saturday, May 3, in downtown Eureka Springs. The parade begins at 2 p.m. and you don’t want to miss it! We asked some of our local residents to tell us about their vision of ARTrageous and answer the question: What does ARTrageous mean to you?

and however which way you want to do

Steve Beacham: Surprising, funny, shocking — all of those things rolled into one.
Brad Eskridge: Celebrating all the artists in Eureka.
Linda Caldwell: Pretty much anything goes.
Heather Wilson: Community – people passing on traditions and new people discovering more about who Eureka really is.
Kenny Ray Jackson: Eureka Springs.
Amanda Haley: Self-expression
that.

The Souls of Humanity

Museum of Eureka Springs Art features iconic painting beginning this month

Velvalee Campbell’s famous painting, Souls of Humanity, will be on display at the Museum of Eureka Springs Art beginning in May.

MESA director Steve Beacham described the story behind the painting, saying Velvalee lived in Eureka Springs in the 1980s. That’s when she had a metaphysical moment, a message from beyond telling her that she was going to create a painting that would have a big impact on the world.

“She spent months after that figuring out what to paint,” Steve said.

Velvalee finished the painting while she lived with her friend in Alaska during one of the coldest winters the region had ever seen. She meditated each day before painting. The final product, a 3’ X 4’ oil painting, made an impact before she left Alaska. Steve described how a woman from Moscow touched the heart of the painting.

“And she felt the heartbeat and it felt warm,” Steve said. “She had this moment of ‘aha!’ ”

That woman encouraged Velvalee to take the painting to Russia. After returning to Eureka Springs, Velvalee and her husband sold some possessions to raise money to produce prints of the painting. Then, for the first time in 50 years, foreigners entered the Soviet Union. Velvalee was invited to travel there to share the painting.

“They displayed the painting in churches and private homes,” Steve said. “People were having experiences seeing the painting as if it was a church icon that had some special powers.”

Velvalee passed away on June 5, 2019, leaving the painting to hang in her daughter’s Oklahoma home. In 2022, Steve contacted Velvalee’s daughter. Now, years later, The Souls of Humanity painting is hanging in MESA for all to see.

“It’s such a Eureka story. There were a lot of people in Eureka Springs who helped send Velvalee to Russia,” Steve said.

Steve said the museum is honored to feature the work of local artists like Velvalee, with more than 150 artists represented in the collection.

“Every time I come here, I enjoy it,” Steve said. “I feel comfortable and at home here. I usually see something new in pieces of art I hadn’t seen before.”

The opening exhibit takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 10, and the exhibit continues until July 10. Admission is free.
