Eureka Springs is a great place to explore nature
Philip Bengelink, Inga Savickas, Hayden Hill and Lindsey Baron from Grand Rapids, Michigan
Why did you come to Eureka Springs?
Inga: We are on spring break. Philip has family in Springdale. This is our first day of the trip. We drove down yesterday.
Did your family in Springdale tell you about Eureka?
Philip: They did. We also did some research about this place, so we researched it, and it was recommended to us.
What do you think of Eureka so far?
Hayden: It’s a very cute little town.
Philip: When we were driving down and looking at the buildings, it shocked me how historic it is.
How long have you been in town?
Hayden: Since yesterday at 8 p.m.
What are you looking forward to?
Hayden: We are going to do some shopping downtown, and we just came from the hotel. We’re staying at the Crescent
Why did you choose the Crescent?
Hayden: We heard about the whole cancer history thing and all that, so we thought we’d go explore.
Have you seen any ghosts at the Crescent?
Philip: Not yet.
Inga: We did see the cat, though. Second best thing.
Describe Eureka in three words.
Inga: Quaint
Philip: Zany
Lindsey: Friendly
Cosplay enthusiasts take note. The first annual Eureka Springs Steampunk Festival is happening on Saturday, April 26, and it’s an interactive affair.
Event organizer Danny Watson said he and his partner decided to host the festival after offering several successful steampunk games over the past year. A cross between geocaching, escape rooms and scavenger hunts, the games bring steampunk fans together the same way the festival will.
“We love that genre, because it encompasses so many years and subgenres,” Danny said. “You have dark academia, industrial fantasy and it’s all cosplay. Everybody loves to dress up.”
The festival will be absolutely jampacked, Danny said, with more than 25 vendors, a steampunk workshop and more. At the workshop, attendees can make a steampunk gun to accessorize their costume.
“We’ve collected all these Nerf guns and put black primer on them,” Danny said. “We have tubs and tubs of stuff to design your gun.”
The best part about the event? It’s a fundraiser for Good Shepherd Humane Society, the only no-kill animal shelter in Carroll County. Danny said Good Shepherd dogs will be at the festival, and there will be an award for best dressed pet in the parade. Cole Wakefield, executive director of Good Shepherd, said the adoption center is thankful for the exposure and donation.
“We were really excited to get the call that the event was coming to town and they wanted to make supporting Good Shepherd a cornerstone of it,” Cole said. “We’re completely honored to be the beneficiaries. It will make a big difference as we go through another year supporting this county.”
Danny said he’s excited to bring Tea Dueling to Eureka Springs. He explained how Tea Dueling works, saying two people dunk a biscuit into tea, hold it up and hope theirs is the last to fall.
“It’s a very family-friendly event for anybody that likes any sort of cosplay,” Danny said. “We have several games that we’re going to be playing that are free to the public, and we’re going to have some really great prizes to give away.”
Danny encouraged everyone, especially locals, to walk in the parade, saying Eureka Springs is the perfect place for an event like this.
“The steampunk genre is dark and gothic,” Danny said. “You could not pick a more suited backdrop for this type of a festival, because steampunk is set in the Victorian period.”
Eureka Springs Music Awards celebrate local artists
Eureka Springs is synonymous with art: visual, wearable, performance and musical. Local and regional musicians play for a packed house at The Auditorium. Their music fills Basin Park, countless bars and the streets of the city itself.
That’s exactly why Que Thomas came up with the idea for the Eureka Springs Music Awards, a first annual event scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at the Auditorium.
Que remembered strolling through downtown and hearing music in the distance. “I thought about all the local music in town and then I heard a different kind of music, and I realized that everybody loves local
musicians,” Que said. “They come to their gigs, but as far as public recognition, local acts really don’t have anything.”
He hatched the plan: Rent a venue, sell tickets and get sponsorships to host an awards show. It started small scale, but the idea took on a life of its own when he reached out to Mike Maloney, director of the Eureka Springs City Advertising and Promotion Commission.
“He said, ‘Que, let me bring this to my staff. We’re all music lovers,’” Que said. “He talked to them, and they asked me if I’d be interested in allowing this to also be a CAPC event and present it together at The Aud.”
Que will host the awards with the CAPC’s Danyelle Harris. He said the partnership with the CAPC has been wonderful. The best part about the event, Que said, is that all the musicians were nominated and voted on by locals. Nominations took place from Feb. 1 –22, and voting took place March 1 – 22.
“We consolidated all the nominees down to the top five and had a press conference to announce all the nominees,” Que said.
By March 1, the awards had already received more than 500 votes. Que said he can’t keep up with messages on social media about the event.
Story by: Samantha Jones
“It’s been shared over and over to where pretty much everyone has seen it,” Que said. “A lot of the musicians were pleasantly surprised. Some were shocked they were nominated.”
The awards ceremony is scheduled on a Sunday afternoon to accommodate the schedules of local artists; many of them play gigs on Friday and Saturday.
“We wanted to do it so they could be there and a lot of the public could be there without having to be up late and worry about going to work in the morning,” Que said.
Ten awards will be given, presented by CAPC commissioners and Eureka Springs Music Award board members. Nominated acts will perform during the ceremony.
“We’re doing this because there is a very large musical community in Eureka Springs,
“I thought about all the local music in town and then I heard a different kind of music, and I realized that everybody loves local musicians.”
— Que Thomas
lots of music lovers and performances all the time, but I don’t think everyone realizes the value of local music,” Que said. “We have live music every weekend in several places. Music brings people to Eureka Springs.”
Que continued, “People actually come to town to watch certain people. They’re not coming just to watch music here at night and drive home. They’re staying and shopping and eating at local restaurants. If you took music out of Eureka Springs, it would make a big dent in the economy.”
Que encouraged everyone to attend the awards. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet their favorite local musicians, who will receive the VIP treatment.
“It’s going to be exciting,” Que said. “We’re celebrating our local musicians, and we’re making it as fun and exciting as possible.”

Local Focus, a temporary exhibit featuring the photographs of Richard Quick, Susan Storch, Jim Nelson, Rick Armellini, Edward Robison and John Rankine, will be available to view until April 20 at the Museum of Eureka Springs Art..
MESA board member Steve Beacham said the exhibit fulfills the mission of the museum.
“We’re here to help promote local art history and the artists that live here in Eureka Springs,” Steve said.
Steve said the photos vary in subject, from days gone by to the 1970s to today. There is also abstract art and landscape pieces. All the work is for sale, and smaller pieces are available for sale in the gift store. Steve said MESA plans to have four temporary exhibits a year.
“This is the first show we’ve done where the work is actually for sale,” Steve said. “We can provide more wall space for longer periods of time for artists to display their work than most galleries can in town.”
