WelcomebacktoConFest!Asyoucanimagine,sinceouroriginalpostponementin 2020duetotheCOVID-19pandemic,wehavedeliberatedonthisdecisionmany times.InconsultationwiththeCAATAboard,artists,andtheatersinHawai‘iandacross thenation,wehavecometotheconclusionthatinordertohealandmoveforward, weasacommunityarelongingtocometogetherandcelebrate.
However,giventhesevereimpactofthelastfouryearsonourfieldandspecificallyon Hawai‘iitself,wecanonlydosointhemostresponsiblewaypossible.Thismeansthat tomitigatetheimpactofinvitingourcolleaguestovisitthe‘āina,weneedtoensure thatwhenConFestisover,theHawai‘itheatercommunityisstrongerthaneverbefore.
Astheaterartists,werecognizetheshiftinglandscapeandtheneedtobeboth responsibleandresponsive.Weseethisasamomentofchange.Amomenttogather. Amomenttolearn.Amomenttoact.
Thisyear’sConFestwillfocusoncelebratingnewworksbyKānakaMaoli(Native Hawaiian),PacificIslander,andlocalAsianAmericantheaterpractitioners.Weare restructuringConFestsothatattendeescanenjoymultipleliveperformancesatour hostvenueandourpartnertheatersinHonoluluoverthefirstweekend.Inlieuof panels,attendeesareinvitedtoparticipateinconsequentialconversations, workshopsandattendstaged-readings.
Weinviteyoutocelebratewithus,tocometogetherasacommunity,andtowitness andlearnfromtheworkgrownontheislands.We’veincludedmaterialsinthispacket toencourageyoutolearnaboutthedeepandrichhistoryofHawaiʻianditspeople beforeattendingandhopeyouwillusetheseresourcesasastartingpointforyour visit.
