THIS YEARS THEME - A Letter From The Co-Chairs Welcome back to ConFest! As you can imagine, since our original postponement in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have deliberated on this decision many times. In consultation with the CAATA board, artists, and theaters in Hawai‘i and across the nation, we have come to the conclusion that in order to heal and move forward, we as a community are longing to come together and celebrate.

However, given the severe impact of the last four years on our field and specifically on Hawai‘i itself, we can only do so in the most responsible way possible. This means that to mitigate the impact of inviting our colleagues to visit the ‘āina, we need to ensure that when ConFest is over, the Hawai‘i theater community is stronger than ever before.

As theater artists, we recognize the shifting landscape and the need to be both responsible and responsive. We see this as a moment of change. A moment to gather.

A moment to learn. A moment to act.

This year’s ConFest will focus on celebrating new works by Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian), Pacific Islander, and local Asian American theater practitioners. We are restructuring ConFest so that attendees can enjoy multiple live performances at our host venue and our partner theaters in Honolulu over the first weekend. In lieu of panels, attendees are invited to participate in consequential conversations, workshops and attend staged-readings.

We invite you to celebrate with us, to come together as a community, and to witness and learn from the work grown on the islands. We’ve included materials in this packet to encourage you to learn about the deep and rich history of Hawaiʻi and its people before attending and hope you will use these resources as a starting point for your visit.

He Leo Aloha & Mahalo WHO WE ARE The Consortium of Asian American Theaters & Artists (CAATA) envisions a strong and sustainable Asian American theater community that is an integral presence in national culture—evocative of our past, declarative of our present, and innovative towards our future.

Our mission is to advance the field of Asian American theater through a national network of organizations and artists. We collaborate to inspire learning and sharing of knowledge, and resources to promote a healthy, sustainable artistic ecology.

As a collective of Asian American theater leaders and artists, we bring together local and regional leaders to work nationally toward our shared values of social justice, artistic diversity, cultural equity and inclusion. We hold national conferences and festivals biennially in different parts of the country, reaching as wide a range of Asian American populations and communities as possible. We survey Asian American theater artists and organizations to find out their foremost concerns. We form alliances with other theater groups of different affinities to advance mutual goals cooperatively and to exchange ideas and strategies.

As we embark on this ConFest, let us take the time to acknowledge Hawai’i as an indigenous space where the descendants of the original people are today identified as Kānaka Maoli. We recognize that it was through coercion, force, and the breaking of formal treaties that this land was illegally seized. Her Majesty, Queen Lili‘uokalani, temporarily yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom and these territories, under duress and protest, to the United States to avoid the bloodshed of her people. Let us further recognize and express gratitude for the generations of Aboriginal Hawaiians and their knowledge systems that have shaped and continue to shape Hawai’i in a sustainable way that allows us to learn here today.

The ʻāina on which the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa sits is located in the ahupuaʻa of Waikīkī, in the moku of Kona, on the mokupuni of Oʻahu, in the Pae ʻĀina o Hawaiʻi. The particular ʻili ʻāina that Kennedy Theatre is situated on is at the triangulation of Kaualaʻa, Wailele, and Waʻahila. Ma kai of the theatre is Kapaʻakea and to the west is Puahia and Pilipili. Ma uka of our campus are the uplands of Kahoʻiwai, the water that is the source for our major stream of Kānewai. Acknowledging these traditional wahi pana honors the ‘āina and the historic relationship that Kānaka Maoli have with this place.

Friday, May 24th 5pm Mainstage

After moving away nearly a decade ago, Kaʻōnohi reluctantly returns home to attend his nephew’s first birthday lūʻau in Hōnaunau, Kona. No longer separated by the vast distance, Kaʻōnohi must examine his fragile relationship with his family members who are struggling with their own precarious reality. Hula and mele are at the heart of this story, revealing the polarizing complexities of this Hawaiian ʻohana as they navigate loss, identity and healing.

This hana keaka production will be performed in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, with some English and Hawaiian Creole English.

About Joshua “Baba” Kamoaniʻala Tavares Joshua "Baba" Kamoaniʻala Tavares hails from Hōnaunau, Kona on Hawaiʻi Island. He is the playwright, composer and director of Glitter in the Paʻakai. He is incredibly grateful for this opportunity to bring this moʻolelo to life with this remarkably talented ʻohana. Mahalo e nā kūpuna, e ke akua, e nā kumu, nā hoa, kuʻu ʻohana, a me ka poʻe lehulehu i ke kākoʻo piha ʻana mai i kēia hana keaka hou loa. An MFA candidate in Acting and Hana Keaka, he is expected to graduate in May 2024 and looks forward to continuing to build pilina in our community, training institutions and professional performing arts industry. Nothing Micro about Micronesia is a coming-of-age story about two Micronesian boys who encounter an unlikely place after a series of conflicts between them. They must navigate between the directions from elders and the government systems who have had an impact on their current lives and states of being/belonging. Join these friends as they take us through their lenses of island life in Micronesia while facing the rising tides of their transitioning ages, complicated family matters, new findings about the world and themselves, and uncertain futures.

About Teada Productions TeAda Productions is proud to cohost CAATA ConFest 2024, and present its newest play Nothing Micro About Micronesia which explores the Micronesian experience through the lenses of climate change, education, migration, storytelling, justice, cultural erasure and reclamation both in Hawai'i, and across Micronesia.

What does a delicious can of SPAM have to do with colonialism and Asian identity?

CHamoru/Filipina artist Sierra Sevilla attempts to answer this in her hilarious one-woman show.

For the Love of Spam is a one-woman comedic stand-up, puppetry, participatory, and multisensory show dedicated to two things: canned meat and colonialism. We’ll find out how this (delicious) canned meat symbolizes modern-day colonialism, and threatens the very livelihood of a whole civilization in these ‘West vs East’ political games. Can this formerly catholic, angry, and god-fearing woman help educate (and feed) the masses, all while ‘liberating’ her island?

About Sierra Sevilla

"Sierra is a CHamoru/Filipina multidisciplinary theatremaker in London, originally from the island of Guam. She has worked in theatre as a facilitator, director and writer/performer. She is passionate about using theatre to shift immigrant narratives, telling unique and diasporic stories that directly challenge the current political immigration rhetoric, as embracing these narratives can help fight political rhetoric demonising immigrants.

After receiving her MA in Applied Theatre from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, she went on to help start theatre companies in the UK and on Guam.

Sierra recently graduated from the New Earth Performance Academy. In 2023, She received a a Seed Commission from Camden People’s Theatre for her one-woman show ‘For the Love of Spam’. She also showcased her show at NEAPfest in Brazil (November 2023), and had a sold-out run at the Pleasance Futures Festival (December 2023). She will perform the show at Edinburgh Fringe in 2024, followed by UK and international tours through 2025.

Sierra dreams of creating and touring theatre about the diasporic Guamanian & Filipino experience. She wants to use her unique experience growing up in Guam to showcase injustices and political issues in the East, combining her art with activism."

10 Minute Play Festival The Beach Cave Written by Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl This monologue is based on a true story I heard over forty years ago and have never forgotten. The woman who told me her story was here in the islands recovering from some kind of personal issue. I cannot remember her name, and I never saw her again. It made me think very deeply about the ancestral presence in our ʻāina, and what kind of agency our kūpuna might actually have in our temporal realm. And like the woman in the monologue says, I did not want this story to be completely lost in the chasm of time.

10 Minute Play Festival Lele Ka ʻUhane

Written by Jackie Pualani Johnson Venerable Mauna a Wākea, the towering eminence that created Hawaiʻi Island, draws Alvaro and Palila to her summit to appreciate the night sky, resplendent with stars.

The mountain pulls the reins after their chance meeting as Alvaro rushes to fix failing astronomical equipment at the summit. Palila counters his impetuous response and accuses him of ignoring cultural protocols. The two tussle over pono, correct, behavior and both learn about family kuleana, responsibility, as the forces on the mountain take charge. Pīpī holo kaʻao. So the tale unfolds.

10 Minute Play Festival Koa's Eulogy Written by R Zamora "Zack" Linmark Set in a mortuary chapel in present-day Honolulu, with flashbacks to San Francisco in the early 1980s, and narrated by sixty-plus year old Koa, a Scottish-Hawaiian local teacher, "Koa's Eulogy" centers on the kumu's friendship with Scott and Bubble, from when they'd first met, to Scott's AIDSrelated death, to Bubbles' untimely passing that reopens the door of remembering, love, and loss.

Friday Keynote Speaker DR. KEAWE LOPES JR. Director of Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language & Ka Waihona a Ke Aloha Dr. R. Keawe Lopes Jr.’s teaching focus is on Hawaiian language, mele, and hula. He leads Ka Waihona A Ke Aloha: Ka Papahana Ho‘oheno Mele, an interactive resource center for the promotion, preservation and perpetuation of mele and mele practitioners. The Center helps to create venues that highlight mele and mele practitioners, provides educational opportunities that support Hawaiian language revitalization and restoration efforts through the learning of mele and the practice thereof. He is a co-kumu hula of Ka Lā ‘Ōnohi Mai o Ha‘eha‘e: A hula school that provides a rich learning environment upholding a legacy of mele hula and mele oli that have been passed down through the generations. He has served as a Hawaiian language, haku mele and music judge for the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Artists, Wai‘anae Coast Song Composing Contest, World Invitational Hula Competition, Mokihana Festival Song Writing Contest, Moku o Keawe International Hula Festival, and the Malia Craver Hula Competition.

Saturday Keynote Speakers Sammie Choy Hawai`i Pono`ī Coalition Sammie Choy has educational, community, and professional experience as an actor, director, and teacher, as well as a BFA, MFA, and Ph.D in theater. After working as an actor in the SF Bay Area, she returned to Hawai‘i.

Since then, in addition to teaching theater and acting at Kapi‘olani Community College and UH Mānoa, she has been a co-director/coproducer for public radio show Aloha Shorts and director/producer for the Hawai‘i Pono‘ī Coalition. With the HPC, she has directed living history plays by Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl, the most recent being Ke Kauā o ka Lāhui: The Life of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole Pi‘ikoi.

Saturday Plenary Speakers Craig Howes Center for Biographical Research, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Craig Howes is the Director of the Center for Biographical Research, the co-editor of Biography: An Interdisciplinary Quarterly, and a Professor of English at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He has been involved in the Hawaiʻi theater scene for forty years. Highlights include ten years on the board of Kumu Kahua Theatre, appearing in the premieres of two of Victoria Kneubuhl’s plays— Ola Nā Iwi and The Holiday of Rain—and regularly performing in living history productions focusing on Hawaiʻi’s political and cultural legacies at ʻIolani Palace, the Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, and Foster Botanical Gardens.

Kiki Rivera (he/they) is an internationally produced, theatre artist, educator, and arts activist. They hold a BA in Theatre and MFA in Playwriting from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM). Original plays include Faʻalavelave: The Interruption.

Published plays include “Puzzy” (featuring New Zealand Playwright Victor Rodger) in the anthology Samoan Queer Lives, To “Our Black and Brown Babies of Ocean and Islands” in the anthology We’re Not Neutral, and “Kumu Kukui” in Lighting the Way: An Anthology of Short Plays About The Climate Crises.

Sunday Keynote Speaker Hone Kouka Tawata Productions/Kia Mau Festival Hone Kouka (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Kahungunu) MNZM is an acclaimed Māori writer, producer and director, the youngest winner of the Bruce Mason Playwriting Award and multi award winner. He has had plays produced in South Africa, Britain, Hawaii, Canada, Australia, Japan, New Caledonia, as well as throughout New Zealand, with three plays being translated into French, Japanese and Russian. Hone’s plays include Ngā Tangata Toa, Waiora: Te Ūkaipō, The Prophet and Bless The Child.

In 2004, Hone co-founded the production company, Tawata Productions, focusing on the development and presentation of new theatre and film by Māori and Pasifika artists. Hone became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to Contemporary Māori Theatre in June 2009.

Created in 2015, Hone is the Artistic Director/Chief Executive and founder of Kia Mau Festival, a Māori, Pasifika and Global Indigenous contemporary performance platform based in Te Ūpoko o te Ika a Māui.

Hone’s work also extends to the film industry, most recently with two feature films screening at the Berlin Film Festival, Born to Dance (Screenwriter) and Mahana (Executive Producer). Hone’s earlier work across short films includes as Executive Producer for a series of successful short films that screened at Cannes, Sundance & Berlin film festivals.

In 2022 Hone was an Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Laureate Award winner.

Sunday Plenary Speakers Tammy Hailiʻōpua Baker Professor and Director, Hawaiian Theatre Program, Department of Theatre and Dance Tammy Hailiʻōpua Baker is a playwright/director/scholar/educator from Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i whose work focuses on revitalizing Kanaka Maoli moʻolelo (Native Hawaiian history and narratives) through Hawaiianmedium theatre, Hana Keaka. She holds an MFA in Directing from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) and a PhD in Māori and Indigenous Studies from the University of Waikato in Aotearoa/NZ. Haili‘ōpua oversees the Hawaiian Theatre and Playwriting Programs at UHM and is a recent recipient of the Kennedy Center Medallion of Excellence.

Lucy Burns Advisor 10-minute play Lucy Burns is a dramaturg, and also an associate professor in the Asian American Studies Department at UCLA.

Sunday Plenary Speakers Harry Wong III Kumu Kahua A Kumu Kahua Board member from 1989 to 1997, Harry Wong III received an Associate of Arts Degree from Honolulu Community College in 1987, a Baccalaureate in Philosophy from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 1990, and in 1993 went on to receive a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Direction from UH Mānoa. Harry has been the Artistic Director of Kumu Kahua since 1997.

While a guest lecturer at Windward Community College and Guest Director for Honolulu Theatre for Youth and The Actors Group (TAG), Harry oversees all season selection and direction of productions, as well as the annual playwright contest, and also directs at least one production each year at Kumu Kahua.

Additional achievements include: a Po‘okela for Play Directing for Topdog/Underdog, 2010; Outstanding Alumni Award, Honolulu Community College, 2010; Hawai’i Shakespeare Festival, Co-founder and Director; an Individual Artist Fellow Grant for Theatre Directing, State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, 1999; a Princess Grace Award for Directing, 1996; Participant in the Young Director’s Lab at Lincoln Center Theatre, New York, 1996; Allen Lee Hughes Fellow, Arena Stage, Washington, DC, 19951996; and a Masako Sakamoto Scholarship for Acting, Kennedy Theatre, UHM.
