Not just because of the actual return of the sun (hooray for long days and warm evenings!), but for its metaphorical significance. • Take a detour from the freeway and discover the architectural delights of Heritage Square in Oxnard (page 9). The city relocated and restored several historic homes from all over town to create this charming slice of Victorian heaven. Architectural spotlight: Oxnard’s Heritage Square Ventura County beach town keeps its Victorian past alive

By Zachary Rosen Just a quick drive off Highway 101 down Oxnard Boulevard and around the corner from 7th Avenue sits an entire block of historic homes known as Heritage Square. Set amongst the modern-day developments in Oxnard, this collection of fully restored Victorian structures sit as if they’re preserved in their own time. Open for almost 30 years, Heritage Square hosts a variety of businesses year-round with seasonal events annually adorning the well-groomed grounds. Visitors can explore Heritage Square throughout the year and enjoy wine tasting, take a guided tour, or enjoy a meal while learning about the historic architecture and early days of Oxnard.

An idea long in the making The idea for Heritage Square first began in 1985 when the city was developing new infrastructure around town. Several of the properties contained homes that a previous survey had determined were of historical significance. Taking inspiration from other heritage squares in areas like Pasadena, the city decided to move all of the structures to one location. It began with the idea to relocate california101guide.com

The center of the Square provides a charming setting for public and private events alike. This summer will mark the return of the annual concert series, and organizers hope to bring back the Steampunkfest this fall.

three buildings, but they soon decided to expand the concept to a whole block, almost three acres large. The city worked for several years, wanting everything to be put in place before inviting the public to the site, officially opening Heritage Square in 1991. Today, the site features 15 historic structures, including an antique water tower set among the homes. During its development, the city wanted to make sure the grounds complemented the historic homes, placing a large emphasis on landscaping design. Patterned brick paths lined with flowers and shrubs connect each building and tie together the different areas.

A small rose garden, and a white garden with more than 60 varieties of white blooming plants, add to the Victorian ambiance.

built for Louis and Caroline Pfeiler in 1877, is the oldest house at Heritage Square and features the ornamented and symmetric woodwork of Italianate architecture. A water tower originally from the same property sits to the side of the central courtyard and helps set the antique scene. While visiting Heritage Square, guests can learn details about these buildings, the characters that commissioned the homes, and the families that lived in them throughout their storied past.

Built between 1877 and 1912, the different homes all tell of figures from Oxnard’s early days, with each one being commissioned by a unique set of personalities. The Perkins/Claberg House (1887) was built by a local Danish carpenter, Jens Rasmussen, who eventually became president of the Union Oil Company and an elected member of the State Assembly. Site Superintendent Gary Blum mentions that some people come to Heritage Square expecting a “house museum.” Each building is actually individually owned and houses one or more companies, although a visitor brochure and historic plaques in front of each building provide some self-guided education for visitors. The grounds are always open to sightseers, and visitors can come explore the grounds at any time. A small visitor center located in the Perkins Pump House (1887) gives guests guidance and brochures, as well as souvenirs from the small giftshop. Those looking for a deeper understanding of Heritage Square can arrange a guided tour with one of their docents. The guided tour gives guests an exterior analysis of the range of buildings and usually includes interior access to about three of the different buildings, depending on their availability.

These personal tours offer a more intimate experience with the knowledgeable staff curating the conversation to what interests the group. Heritage Square has approximately 30 docents that are drawn to the history and architecture from a wide range of areas. (Of course, Gary mentions that they are always looking for more volunteers.) Before the quarantine, private and group tours were led on weekends, but now a reservation system allows pre-scheduled guests throughout the week. This has provided them more flexibility, and they are giving more tours than ever.

Steampunk, speakeasies, and sandwiches in a Victorian setting With each building being personally owned, Heritage Square is home to a variety of businesses ranging from professional services, such as an orthodontist and a hair salon, to establishments like a wine tasting room and a small coffee shop. Located in the Laurent-McGrath House built in 1901, the restaurant La Dolce Vita 1901 faces the main courtyard and features al fresco dining and a range of tasty dishes inspired by

Italy and the Mediterranean. With a selection of Italian wines and such items as a zesty Lemon Pistachio Pasta or a more classic Chicken Piccata, La Dolce Vita 1901 offers an intimate setting to enjoy your evening. The restaurant also includes a full bar and attached speakeasy with Bar Manager Jared Krupp mixing up his classic yet innovative style of Prohibition-era cocktails. For his range of concoctions, Jared will harvest local ingredients and craft his own infused spirits like a pineappleginger rum or a strawberry-basil vodka. Grab an aperitif at this elegant speakeasy or to stop in to wrap up an evening at Heritage Square.

If you’re looking for a quicker visit or an early evening stop, try a round of wine tasting at Rancho Ventavo Cellars. Nestled in the Scarlett House that was built in 1902, this winery appropriately focuses only on red wines. On offer are more than two dozen wines primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Syrah grapes. Tastings are $10 and include a crystal logo glass. The tasting room is typically open Friday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, although reservations can be made for larger groups. For morning visitors, Heritage Coffee & Gifts, located in the Petre Ranch House (1912), provides caffeinated and decaf options to brighten up your day. With a warm wooden interior smelling of fresh roast and toast, the charming coffee shop features a range of sandwiches and baked goods to go Summer 2021

alongside their selection of coffee drinks. A small gift store lines the walls with items produced locally from Oxnard artisans.

The extensive landscaping and scenic ambiance of Heritage Square provides a natural setting for many events throughout the year. The Heritage Square Hall (1902) building was originally a church and inherently lends itself to weddings; however, the building is also often rented for workshops, group visits, and concerts. Throughout the year, Heritage Square produces a range of their own events, such as an annual Spring Tea, that highlights the distinctive grounds. During the holiday season, lights and decorations surround such festive features as a gingerbread house display.

One of the more unusual experiences held at Heritage Square is the annual Oxnard Steampunkfest that takes full advantage of the Victorian surroundings. This regional event, usually held in October, brings together workshops, costumes, and festivities for a day with plenty of people-watching and fun photos to be had.

One of the area’s most popular events is the Summer Concert Series, with an eclectic selection of musicians playing for their audience on Friday evenings in the outdoor courtyard. Of course, the quarantine has affected their schedule, but Heritage Square is bringing back events as it is safe to do so, with a full Summer Concert Series planned for this season.

From whale watching to parasailing, now is the time to experience oceanic adventures on the Central Coast

Summer is prime for getting out and (re)discovering the salty magic of the sea.

There is a bounty of options for getting wet, and our incredible surf breaks from mild to wild are only the beginning. Whether you plan to get out on your own or hire an outfitter or gear, there is a dazzling array of ways to engage with the sea. There are surf lessons, parasailing, jet ski rentals, whale watching, excellent fishing, sailing lessons, sea kayaking and paddleboard yoga, tidepool viewing, snorkeling and SCUBA diving, and the list goes on!

Our backyard is in one of the world’s top regions for watersports, from Sycamore Cove to Ragged Point, with close to 250 miles of coastline that spans Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties. Out of California’s 840 miles of coast, Ventura County checks in with 43, Santa Barbara boasts some 100 miles, while San Luis Obispo County has 93 miles.

Marine wildlife is rich here, thanks in part to its protected status and the stewards that help keep it amazing. The indigenous Chumash were the original stewards — and, arguably, original sportsmen. Their tomol canoes allowed them to paddle back and forth to the Channel Islands to fish and hunt.

(Check out northernchumash.org for some deeper perspectives.) These days, the Chumash’s old hunting and boating areas are federally protected and known as the Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary (channelislands.noaa.gov). Located off the coast of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, it includes 1,470 square miles of protected waters within the Channel Islands National Park.

biosphere reserve site. It is situated at the confluence of two major ocean currents, and this means incredible biodiversity.

That’s one reason we get such good fishing, and so many whales migrating through the area. Its pristine kelp forests and deep-sea coral gardens hold tons of sea life.

The entire shoreline of California, to 11 miles offshore, is protected by the Bureau of Land Management under the status of California Coastal National Monument. Along the Gaviota coast, some 76 miles are stewarded by the Gaviota Coast Conservancy (gaviotacoastconservancy.org). This is just one of many organizations working to protect the Central California coast.

This amazing transition zone of shoreline and ocean sustains us in so many ways and we have so many opportunities to play, educate ourselves, and be involved in helping to protect it.

This region is called the Galapagos of the North for good reason.

In Ventura County, most of the activities are based out of either Channel Islands or Ventura Harbors. Both harbors offer events along the waterfront, and now that we’re moving out of lockdown, many activities have started up again.

Channel Islands Harbors. They’re the folks you’ll want to call to go ashore any of the islands, whether for a day hike or to camp. Island Packers also offers marine tours and whale watching with knowledgeable guides to give you the best chance at spotting the diverse wildlife.

They have dive classes for individuals as well as the entire family, and flexible schedules. But if you’re in a hurry, you can be fully trained and certified in just two weekends.

Check their website’s marine mammal sighting page to see a daily tally of the number of both whale and dolphin sightings, including which specific species are currently plying the local waters.

There are days where well over 8,000 dolphins are spotted in the Channel.

Explore the verdant wonders of the Central Coast’s botanical gardens From Thousand Oaks to San Luis Obispo, these gardens celebrate the biodiversity of Mediterranean-type ecosystems

There are few better places to take in the best of Ventura’s views than at the Ventura Botanical Gardens.

The Central Coast is rich in botanical gardens filled with lush flowering plants, ferns, shrubs, and trees. But the earliest botanical gardens were founded by universities in Italy during the late Renaissance period of the 1540s. They were created for the study of medicinal uses of plants. Later, the cultivation of plants for profit led to academic studies in forestry, landscape architecture, ornamental horticulture, and garden design.

Botanical gardens today have become destination spots for millions of tourists who visit them each year.

Botanical gardens in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties focus their efforts on cultivation and preservation of the plants unique to Mediterranean-type ecosystems. There are just five 30

of these zones in the world, and the Central Coast of California — known as the California Floristic Province — is one of them. The others are located in similar latitudinal zones in Central Chile, the Mediterranean Basin, the Cape Region of South Africa, and Southwestern and South Australia. They are home to unusual and globally significant plant diversity

and endemic species. All five regions have received international designation as biodiversity hotspots, and share similar climates: short winters and long, dry summers. They also only occur on the west coasts of continents, and benefit from the coastal influence.

Plants in these regions have developed unique adaptations to these conditions, including tolerance to drought. Many are fire-adapted, which turned out to be a good thing for the Ventura Botanical Gardens.

“In 2017, the Thomas Fire came right through — 2,000 plants were burned,” laments Barbara Brown, board member of the Ventura Botanical Gardens.

Back in 2005, the City of Ventura provided Grant Park for the 109-acre Ventura Botanical Gardens, which has views of Ojai’s Topa Topa peak as well as the California Channel Islands.

Other structures, including a new entrance, welcome center, and giftshop, have been constructed.

Long-term plans include building the largest Chilean Garden in the

world outside of Chile. “An important component of botanical gardens is conservation,” says Barbara. “By caring for plants from other regions in the world, like our Chilean Wine Palm or our Tecate cypress, botanic gardens help to preserve rare, threatened, and endangered species.”

Valley Botanic Garden in the heart of Thousand Oaks hosts 15 different gardens and a hilltop trail with stunning views. Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve, near Lake Casitas, has more than 250 acres of native California habitat and open space. Its Art in Nature program emphasizes their mission to “explore the relationship between humans and their environment.”

The Santa Barbara Botanical Garden was founded in 1926. Some parts of the garden and historic structures have been designated as County Historic Landmarks. It, too, places emphasis on plants native to California, northwestern Baja California, and southwestern Oregon, which are considered part of the California Floristic Province. The Pritzlaff Conservation Center, completed in 2019, hosts a state-of-the-art lab for research on molecular plant genetics. It also maintains a seed collection of rare and endangered plant species.

Although not representative of the native flora, the Santa Barbara Mission Rose Garden, located at the Santa Barbara Mission, boasts more than 1,500 rose plants blooming from April to November.

Botanical gardens are dedicated to enhancing awareness and understanding about plants. Most offer children’s gardens, gardening workshops, and special tours. They are good places tobuy plants; many gardens propagate and sell cuttings from their collections.

gardens are relevant today. “It was one of the few places people could go during Covid-19,” says Barbara Brown. “The open spaces were wide enough for people to relax and enjoy being in nature.” Natural areas have proven to be sources of health and wellness in urban areas, and

Schools of the Ojai Valley The Ojai Valley used to be California’s best-kept secret. Although it’s best known as a tourist destination, it’s also a fantastic place to go to school. Educators have been coming here for decades — in some cases, as far back as the 1800s. Montessori School of Ojai

Across both campuses, Ojai Valley School will enroll about 275 students in grades PK-12 in the upcoming academic year. Of those, about 75 percent are local day students and about 25 percent are boarding students. In grades 9 to 12, the percentage of day vs. boarding is close to 50/50.

Beyond the academic program, many members of the OVS community consider Outdoor Education to be the school’s hallmark program. Our students learn in the outdoors starting in preschool, and opportunities expand in the upper grades.

In middle and high school, experienced outdoor leaders guide hiking, rock climbing, river rafting, and surf trips. Students develop confidence, and a respect for themselves and our environment.

They get to explore destinations that include Channel Islands, Yosemite, Sequoia, Joshua Tree, Zion, and Grand Canyon National Parks, and our local Sespe Wilderness. Service and environmental restoration projects are an important part of the program as well.

We offer a comprehensive equestrian program which begins in prekindergarten with weekly classes in the barn. Students in grades 4 through 12 may choose to ride in place of other PE or sports programs.

Our team provides guidance to students and their families starting in the freshman year all the way through senior year. Our recent 21 graduates earned more than 160 acceptances from colleges and universities across the country, from UCLA to Columbia, and their intended majors — from engineering to wildlife ecology — represent their diverse interests and dedication to pursuing their passions.

• Tell us more about OVS We are a California Green Ribbon school, and environmental sustainability is important to us. We’ve dramatically reduced our water use, embraced solar technology, improved our energy efficiency, and rebuilt our high school with fire safety as a key architectural component. We teach students to be forwardthinking and these initiatives are one way in which the school strives to lead by example.

Yes! We have fabulous summer programs for K – 12 students.

Summer is the perfect season for picnics at the beach or at your favorite Central Coast park. Time to start planning your picnic!

To keep the stress level to a minimum while I prepare picnic fare, I like to keep things simple. By simple, I mean keep the menu simple: one sandwich recipe, one side dish recipe, and some store-bought potato chips, cookies, or brownies.

My favorite picnic sandwich is a sub sandwich. I remember mom making subs for picnics and to take to baseball games at Candlestick Park. She cut the rolls in half. Then she slathered mayonnaise on both sides of the roll and piled in slices of Gallo salami. I can still taste it to this day! My version is different, and I think you’ll like it a lot.

Chicken salad sandwiches are my wife Robin’s favorite. She likes the chicken shredded and folded into a creamy dressing with celery, roasted almonds, and dried cranberries. I like to make it with pretzel buns, but you can make it with your favorite sandwich bread.

The Ploughman’s Lunch Sandwich is an open-face sandwich that features a generous slice of garden-fresh tomato, Kerrygold Dubliner cheese, and an herbal vinaigrette dressing on multigrain bread.

My version of a Bánh Mì sandwich is vegetarian and takes a little more time to make, but it is worth the effort if you want something spicy and different. One sandwich makes an entire meal. Its ingredients include mushroom pâté, marinated jalapeño slices, cilantro, and Sriracha sauce.

Choose one of the sandwiches below or make your own favorite sandwich. Add a side dish such as my Three Bean Salad and pack it to go with plenty of your favorite beverage.

In case you don’t have a favorite picnic beverage, I’ve made a few suggestions.

CALIFORNIA 101 Randy’s Recipes Seven-Layer Sub Sandwich (makes 4 sandwiches)

As my brother John used to say, “Make it long!” I like to make my sub sandwiches 24 inches long. Then I cut them into 6-inch lengths and wrap them tightly in plastic wrap. My version is veggie, but you can add deli slices of ham, turkey, roast beef, or salami. Perfect picnic food!

Add the oil and vinegar to a small bowl and stir to combine. Liberally sprinkle the oil and vinegar mixture on the top layer (bell pepper slices) and add salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste. Top with the other half of the French bread and slice into four 6-inch sandwiches.

Wrap each sandwich tightly with plastic wrap and put them in the refrigerator until ready to pack up and go on your picnic.

Directions: Poach chicken: Fill a 12-quart soup pan two-thirds full of water; bring to a boil.

Chicken Salad Sandwich (makes 6 sandwiches)

Directions: Slice French bread lengthwise, creating top and bottom halves. Spread Vegenaise on the sliced part of each French bread half. Do the same for the mustard. Slightly overlap layers of cheese on the bottom half of the French bread — layer Tofurky slices over the cheese. Layer the grilled zucchini on top of the Tofurky, and then layer the roasted red peppers on top of that. Layer onions on top of the peppers, layer the tomatoes on top of california101guide.com

Wrap each of the chicken breast halves completely and tightly in heavy-duty plastic wrap. Add the wrapped chicken to the boiling water — cover and cook on medium heat for 25 minutes. Remove from pan and let stand for five minutes.

Unwrap chicken and shred. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes or until completely cold.

Combine Vegenaise and the next five ingredients (lemon juice through black pepper) in a large bowl, stirring with a whisk until combined. Add celery, cranberries, almonds, and shredded chicken; toss well to coat. Cover and refrigerate for one hour to allow flavors to blend.

I like to serve this sandwich with a hoppy IPA and a side of chilled potato salad.

Ingredients: 24-inch-long loaf of French bread Vegenaise (or substitute mayonnaise) Whole grain Dijon mustard (your choice – I like Maille Old Style) 6 deli slices provolone cheese 1 package Yves Veggie Turkey slices 1 large zucchini (sliced thin lengthwise and grilled) 1 jar roasted red peppers (drained and patted dry) 1 red onion (peeled and sliced thin) 2 large and firm tomatoes (sliced thin) 1 green bell pepper (sliced thin) 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

Celery is a perfect way to add bulk and crunch to chicken salad and to offset the creaminess of the dressing — and the dressing on this salad is creamy!

The tangy cranberries add a touch of sweetness, and the toasted almonds provide crunch. What could be better?

I like to serve these sandwiches with my spicy Kohlrabi Slaw and a chilled bottle of sparkling wine. Ménage à Trois Prosecco goes nicely with the chicken and the spicy slaw.

Ingredients: 2 halves boneless skinless chicken breast 1/ cup Vegenaise (or mayo) 2 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1/ teaspoon salt 2 1/ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 1/ cup celery (chopped) 3 1/ cup dried cranberries 3 1/ cup toasted almonds (coarsely 4

Ploughman’s Lunch Sandwich (makes 6 sandwiches)

CALIFORNIA 101 Randy’s Recipes already know that a ploughman’s lunch is a cold meal originating in the United Kingdom, commonly served in pubs. Its core components are cheese, pickle, and bread. It is traditionally eaten with beer.

The dish can also include such items as boiled eggs, ham, and pickled onions. As its name suggests, it is more commonly consumed during the lunchtime period.

What you probably do not know is that the Ploughman’s Lunch was invented as a marketing ploy by the English Cheese and the Milk Marketing Board to promote the sale of cheese in pubs! A Ploughman’s Sandwich was served at lunchtime (or at supper) and was/is an open-faced sandwich containing cheddar cheese, pickle, and salad.

Here is my springtime version of the perfect Ploughman’s Sandwich suitable for my ploughman friends. Serve with dill pickles on the side and a pint of your favorite beer. I like to serve this with a Sierra Nevada Porter.

Dressing Ingredients: 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1 tablespoon fresh dill (chopped) 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 clove garlic (chopped) A wee pinch of sugar (optional) Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste Sandwich Ingredients: 6 slices multigrain bread 6 tomato slices 7 ounces Kerrygold Dubliner cheese (sliced thin) 12-ounce bag European greens 1/ cup pitted large black olives (sliced in 2 half) Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Puree all dressing ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth. Set aside.

and top with the tomatoes and then the cheese. Bake for five minutes to melt the cheese. Remove from oven. Set aside.

Place salad greens in a large bowl, add dressing, and toss to coat.

I like to serve this sandwich with a chilled three-bean salad. In addition, I like to pair this sandwich with a craftsman hard kombucha such as GoldVibe from the Nevada County Kombuchary in Northern California.

Just before leaving on your picnic, place sandwiches on the counter and pile greens on top of the sandwiches.

Garnish with olive halves and wrap the sandwiches tightly in plastic wrap.

Tip: Substitute 1/2 -inch slices of fresh sourdough French bread for the multigrain bread, and this is an altogether different sandwich.

Bánh Mì Sandwich (makes 6 sandwiches)

Bánh mì is Vietnamese for bread and is also associated with a single serving baguette made into a tasty sandwich.

My first taste of bánh mì was when our son Robert made one for us on one of his visits to Ojai in-between classes at school up north. He described it as a crisp, light roll with a cacophony of flavors inside. It is a true flavor flash for me, and as Robert says, “It is to die for.”

Although a bánh mì sandwich typically consists of one or more meats, vegetables, and condiments, my version is vegan and includes a mushroomlentil pâté, grilled tofu, and pickled vegetables. To cut the prep time in half, I use store-bought pâté. If you have the time, however, I recommend my recipe for Mushroom-Lentil Pâté below. For chiles, I use marinated jalapeño slices (nacho

Pickled vegetable ingredients: 2 tablespoons sugar 1 cup unseasoned rice vinegar 1 cup distilled white vinegar 1 large daikon radish (peeled and cut into matchsticks) 2 medium carrots (peeled and cut into matchsticks) Grilled tofu ingredients: 14 ounces extra-firm organic tofu 1 cup marinade (such as Soy Vay Island Teriyaki) Additional ingredients: 6 mini baguettes 6 tablespoons Vegenaise 1 cup mushroom pâté (see below) 1 medium cucumber (peeled and cut into matchsticks) 1/ cup marinated jalapeño slices (drained) 3 Cilantro (leaves only for garnish) Sriracha sauce (as a condiment) Pickled vegetable directions: Bring three cups of water to a boil. Put the sugar and vinegars in a mixing bowl.

Pour hot water into a bowl and stir to mix.

Add radish and carrot matchsticks. Cover and set aside to cool. If making this a day or two ahead of time, transfer pickled vegetables and liquid to a glass container (I use mason jars), cover, and place in refrigerator until ready to use.

Grilled tofu directions: Preheat grill to medium-high heat (about 450 degrees).

Remove tofu from the package and rinse under cool water. Cut it into three slices (a little less than 1/2 -inch think and 4-bycalifornia101guide.com

CALIFORNIA 101 Randy’s Recipes 4-inches square). Lay the slices on four paper towels and cover with another four towels. Press down to absorb as much liquid as possible. I put a cutting board on top of the towels, put a weight on that, and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Pour marinade into a 9-by-13-inch baking pan and layer the tofu slices over the top of the marinade. Cover, set aside, and allow to marinate for 30 minutes or more.

Carefully lay the tofu slices on the grill.

Baste with leftover marinade — close cover and grill for five minutes. Turn slices over, baste, and grill for another five minutes. Each slice should have nice charred grill marks. Remove from grill and set aside to cool. When cool, cut each square into two 4-inch-long by 2-inchwide rectangles. You should have six rectangles.

Assembly: To assemble the sandwiches, toast the baguettes in the oven until warmed through and the outside is crisp. Slice baguettes in half, leaving a bit of crust on one side to act as a hinge.

Spread a tablespoon of Vegenaise on the bottom of each baguette. Spread a couple of tablespoons of pâté on top of that and add a slice of grilled tofu. Top that with pickled vegetables, cucumber, chiles, and cilantro. Fold the top over the filling and serve with Sriracha sauce on the side.

Mushroom-Lentil Pâté Ingredients: 12 cremini mushrooms 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons butter 1 small sweet onion (diced) 2 cloves garlic (minced) 2 cups cooked brown lentils 1 cup toasted pecans (chopped) 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon tamari 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary (minced) 2 teaspoons fresh thyme (minced) 2 tablespoons fresh sage 2 teaspoons brandy 1 teaspoon light brown sugar california101guide.com

1 teaspoon Better Than Bouillon (vegetable base) Pinch of cayenne pepper Fresh ground black pepper to taste Mushroom-lentil pâté directions: Remove stems from the mushrooms and wipe the mushrooms clean. Heat the olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic. Cook, frequently stirring, until the onions are translucent – about six minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook until they’re soft and cooked through – about eight minutes.

Remove from heat and set aside.

Using a food processor, combine the cooked lentils, nuts, lemon juice, tamari, rosemary, thyme, sage, brandy, brown sugar, vegetable bouillon, and cayenne.

Add the mushroom mixture and process until completely smooth. Add pepper to taste.

Scrape pâté into a serving bowl and refrigerate for a few hours until firm.

Tips: I like to make the mushroom-lentil pâté the day before. One cup of dried lentils will make a little over two cups of cooked lentils. I generally use green lentils in my recipes because they tend to retain a firm texture even after cooking. For this recipe, I use brown lentils because I want them to be creamy when blended. You will have leftover pâté that will keep in the fridge for three or four days.

Most recipes for three-bean salad consist of green beans, kidney beans, and garbanzo beans. My recipe substitutes white beans for the garbanzo beans and my dressing gives it a slightly sweet, tangy bite that is irresistibly good.

Ingredients: Two 15-ounce cans green beans (drained) Two 15-ounce cans white beans (drained and rinsed) Two 15-ounce cans kidney beans (drained and rinsed) 21/2 cups red onion (chopped) 1/ cup granulated sugar 2 1 1 /3 cups red wine vinegar 2/ cup vegetable oil 3 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon celery seed 1 teaspoon dried tarragon Directions: Gently mix all ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for 12 hours before serving.

Hattie’s Potato Salad (makes 3 to 4 servings)

If you’ve always thought that nothing tastes as good as it used to taste when mother made it, here you go! This recipe is passed down by Robin’s mom, Hattie. It is simple and simply the best homemade potato salad ever.

Ingredients: 5 to 6 medium-size red potatoes 1 medium red onion (chopped fine) 1/ cup Vegenaise 2 Summer 2021

CALIFORNIA 101 Randy’s Recipes 1 teaspoon celery seed Salt and pepper (to taste) 4 hard-boiled eggs (divided) Paprika (for garnish) 2 tablespoons parsley (chopped for garnish) Directions: Boil the potatoes until tender throughout (about 15 to 20 minutes). Let the potatoes cool but peel while still warm. Dice potatoes and combine with onions. Add mayonnaise, celery seed, salt, and pepper to taste. Gently stir to combine.

Peel the eggs. Chop two of the eggs and fold them into the salad. Slice the other eggs and layer them on top of the salad. Sprinkle with paprika and chopped parsley. Cover and refrigerate. Serve chilled.

Spicy Kohlrabi Slaw (makes 6 to 8 servings)

41/2 cups water (divided) 1/ cup white vinegar 4 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon dried oregano Directions: Peel the kohlrabi by cutting off the top and bottom and then peel the skin off with a paring knife. Using a box grater, grate the kohlrabi on the large openings until you have about four cups — transfer kohlrabi to a large mixing bowl. Add carrot, onion, and jalapeños to the kohlrabi. Pour four cups of hot water into the bowl. Cover and let steep for five minutes. Uncover and drain. Set bowl aside.

Bring 1/2 cup water, vinegar, salt, sugar, and oregano to a boil in a saucepan.

Pour over the kohlrabi mixture and allow it to cool. Cover and refrigerate until you are ready to go picnicking.

Refrigerator Dill Pickle Spears (makes 16 pickle spears)

The first time I saw kohlrabi, I thought, “This is one alien-looking, whatever it is.”

Don’t be put off by its appearance, even if it does look like someone teleported a Martian vegetable right into your kitchen. Once it is peeled and grated, you’ll love its flavor and texture. It pairs perfectly with the carrots, onions, and jalapeños in this spicy kohlrabi slaw.

Ingredients: 4 cups kohlrabi bulbs (peeled and grated) 1 medium carrot (coarsely grated) 1/ cup onion (peeled, cut in half, and 2 sliced thin) 2 jalapeños (seeded and diced fine) 62

Ingredients: 11/4 cups distilled white vinegar (5% acidity) 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon sugar 2 cups cold water 8 Persian cucumbers (cut lengthwise into halves) 2 tablespoons coriander seeds 6 large garlic cloves (peeled and halved) 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 1/ teaspoon red pepper flakes 4 16 dill sprigs Directions: Combine the vinegar, salt, and sugar in a small non-reactive saucepan (such as stainless steel, glass, or ceramic) over high heat. Whisk until the salt and sugar are dissolved. Transfer the liquid into a bowl and whisk in the cold water.

Refrigerate brine until ready to use.

Stuff the cucumbers into four clean pint jars. Add the coriander seeds, garlic cloves, mustard seeds, red pepper flakes, dill sprigs, and chilled brine into jars, dividing evenly. If necessary, add a bit of cold water to the jars until the brine covers the cucumbers. Cover and refrigerate for at least 24 hours for best flavor. The pickles will keep in the refrigerator for two or three weeks!

It’s Back! Santa Barbara Studio Artists’ Open Studios Tour Returns Labor Day Weekend Opening reception Friday, Sept. 3, at the Community Arts Workshop

(landscapes and botanical paintings), Pamela Larsson-Toscher (portraits & surrealistic dream paintings), Susan Tibbles (assemblages and encaustics), and many more. Participating artists will display a yellow flag, signaling that their studio is open for visitors.

The Central Coast’s oldest and most prestigious open studios tour returns to Santa Barbara Labor Day Weekend, following a one-year hiatus last year due to Covid-19. Twenty-eight acclaimed artists will welcome visitors to their studios for the 20th Annual Open Studios Tour, which begins with a reception Friday, Sept. 3, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Community Arts Workshop, 631 Garden Street. The event continues through Monday, Sept. 6.

Each year this exceptional group offers the public a rare chance to visit the artists in their work environment. The tour draws local, national and international collectors, decorators, gallery owners, and art lovers of all kinds for a weekend devoted to viewing and purchasing fine art.

And because the tour—and most galleries—were closed last year

Bob Jones Trail One of the favorite stops for locals and tourists is the Bob Jones Trail.

This 3-mile paved trail, open for bicycles and foot traffic, begins on Ontario Road and ends in downtown Avila. Walk alongside San Luis Obispo Creek and take in excellent views of the Avila Beach Golf Resort as well as oak and eucalyptus trees and blossoming flowers along the road, swaying in the ocean breeze. This is one of the most popular hikes in Avila Beach and is a splendid way to introduce you to the town.

Sinor-LaVallee sources its grapes. Located in downtown Avila, Sinor-LaVallee winery features wines from estategrown, organically farmed grapes with varietals that include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. The Black Label Pinot Noir and White Label Syrah all come from the Bassi Vineyards.

Sinor-LaVallee owner Mike Sinor is one of the most celebrated winemakers on the Central Coast. He has been making wine in the region for more than 20 years. “I worked hard through school at a winery, and that is when I fell in love with winemaking,” he says. Mike’s done a lot in the last two decades: worked at Byron Winery, then became winemaker at Domaine Alfred Winery, and is now director of winemaking at Ancient Peaks Winery in addition to helming Sinor-LaVallee. Sinor-LaVallee is taking off and Mike is excited to see it grow. “I got the best education about wine at Byron Winery when I first started in the wine business. I love the diverse lifestyle that winemaking offers.” It is physical — “some days I am working a forklift or fixing equipment” — but also cerebral, he notes.

Mike’s first harvest was in 1993, and Sinor-LaVallee was born in 1997. He opened the official tasting room in downtown Avila Beach in 2015. Come taste the fruit of Mike’s labor at his gorgeous tasting room in the heart of Avila.

Move around Avila with ease on these electric bicycles and scooters, which can be rented for the day or by the hour.

“It was all by accident how my business started,” says owner, Matt Maxwell. During his third year at Cal Poly State University-San Luis Obispo, the campus was under construction, and parking was a challenge. “I needed not to be late to school, and this solved the problem by having an electric bicycle,” he explains. Matt purchased two electric bikes so he could get 40 percent off the sticker price, and rented the other bike to his roommate to offset the cost.

His roommate loved it, and Matt decided to start a business renting ebikes to the college students. Being a finance major, he figured out how to make a profit and ended up with 200 monthly subscriptions. Avila Beach Paddlesports Avila Beach is great from the land, but from the water it’s a whole different experience. Take it all in from both directions with Avila Beach Paddlesports. Conveniently located on the Port San Luis Pier, Avila Beach Paddlesports does more than just rent kayaks and paddleboards. Vincent and Emily Shay have shared their business on the port with local fishermen for the past 12 years and have developed a great relationship with them, as well as local wildlife agencies and other paddleboarders.

Vincent believes if you work together you can create a safe place for customers who visit. The Shays created maps to educate people on the routes for paddling, as well as tips on wind and ocean conditions, and wildlife viewing. “They learn how to really see them and protect them, and they pass that along. I love to embrace them with the knowledge and see how to approach an otter and be responsible and care for marine life. I feel that is my way of giving back to the people,” says Vincent. “It was amazing to see inner-city kids who have never seen the beach and watch them touch a batch of kelp.”

The experience is sure to leave you with a profound respect for marine life and the ocean. Tours lead you past the Port San Luis Lighthouse and through the habitats of seals, otters, and if you’re lucky, humpback whales. Stop off for a tour at the lighthouse every Saturday at noon and 1 pm.

SLO.Tours and the Shark Exhibit Sharks: so fascinating, yet so misunderstood. Michael Brink aims to change that. His Shark Exhibit allows people to get up close and personal to several species that inhabit the waters around Avila.

Located in Passage Landing, the exhibit incudes a display of shark’s teeth, egg sacks, and a lifesize model of a great white shark. There’s also a shark cage where you can take pictures.

Michael’s other venture, SLO.Tours, takes small groups on harbor and ocean tours. You’ll catch views of the stunning Central Coast, and (hopefully) glimpses of sharks, sea lions, otters, humpback whales, sea birds, dolphins ... the list goes on!

SLO.Tours begin in June, when you’ll have a good chance of seeing humpback whales migrating along the coast. Michael’s got a good track record for spotting wildlife; he has been on the popular television show “Shark Week” two times! His boat tours hold a maximum of six people, which keeps it intimate.

Central Coast Aquarium To see marine life up close, visit the Central Coast Aquarium. “I was here when I was 12 years old from a school program. We got into a boat and we identified sea life, and it changed my life,” says Gabriela Morales, the aquarium educator and coordinator. Bank of Italy Cocktail Trust Ventura Husband-and-wife team, Brandon Ristaino and Misty Orman, have actually opened two new bars in the midst of the pandemic while running their other three establishments. These three bars — The Good Lion, Test Pilot, and Shaker Mill — are all based in Santa Barbara and are known for their stylish touch and distinctive themes. For a while, Brandon and Misty had been interested in opening a new bar in Ventura. They couldn’t believe their luck when they discovered a historic Italian bank building was available on Main Street in Ventura.

They quickly jumped on the property and began developing it. The building had previously been a clothing shop, so the site needed a complete rebuild, including adding a kitchen. This restaurant and bar would be the first of Brandon and Misty’s establishments to have an integrated kitchen, and they had big plans.

shutdown began, and they were stuck in development. It was tough to decide whether to continue, but they knew that they would never find such a cool building again.

Brandon has Italian roots and they both share a deep love for the culture and cuisine. They wanted to combine a range of Italian influences, pulling largely from southern and coastal Italy with many bright citrus flavors, vermouths, and amaros, like an Amaro Sazerac. The Fluffy Garibaldi cocktail combines fresh orange juice with lemon, Campari, and cherry bark vanilla bitters. The menu also features more “brown and boozy” cocktails, with one of their bestselling drinks being a mezcal cocktail. For something mellower, there is a selection of Italian natural wines available that fit the “quirky Italian comfort food” they serve in the restaurant.

Brandon and Misty had just signed the lease and gotten the keys when minutes later the government closure of bars and restaurants was announced. Suddenly, they had two new bars on their hands, and no idea when they’d be able to open them. They were quiet for a long moment, but then began figuring everything out and putting in the arduous work to make it happen.

Venus in Furs opened in August 2020 as an all-natural wine bar and bottle shop that features small bites and a popup by Barb’s Pies.

enamored with the rebellious French farmers in the 1970s and ‘80s who began to reject the more processed techniques that had become normalized in the industry, and who revitalized the historic production methods and organic farming processes. The punk rock attitude of these farmers inspired Brandon and Misty and had them listening to a lot of rock music from those eras. Misty was inspired by the Velvet Underground song Venus in Furs, which was originally named after a book on female empowerment. They named the bar after the song, feeling it perfectly captures the moody vibes and lush interior they envisioned.

Their selection of wine cocktails doesn’t have any hard alcohol but does bring a full set of flavors that is easier on you the next day. The New Rose in Town adds strawberries and lemon to a lush red wine, with cherry bark vanilla bitters bringing a dash of complexity. The bar has a curated playlist to fit the theme and the drinks are named after different rock songs. The *Real* Wild Child, a reference to the Iggy Pop track, is their take on a cucumber Tom Collins. Black Leather captures the rocky edge of the Sex Pistols’ song by blending the smooth yet sharp herbal notes of amaro and red vermouth with a punch of Angostura bitters and a lemon twist.

Open since 2013, Grapes & Hops is located just one block away from Bank of Italy Cocktail Trust on Main Street and is known for its curated wine selection. The owners of Grapes & Hops have found the local Ventura bar community incredibly supportive during this difficult time, especially as they launch a new cocktail program. The recent opening of Main Street into a walking promenade has also been a saving grace, with the area now being a more accessible destination point. Being just blocks off the beach, Grapes & Hops is in the heart of a thriving social scene. This classy bar has the feel of a winery with wood stave walls and barrel furniture to complete the theme.

In nearby Westlake Village, Nonna brings a more familial experience.

Grapes & Hops was originally started by Tami White, a wine sales rep in the area. In November of 2019 Teri Formanek, a friend of Tami, jumped on as a partner. One of the first changes they decided to make was to introduce a full cocktail bar to the space. They recently obtained a liquor license and a new sign with their updated name, Grapes & Hops With a Twist.

In the past Grapes & Hops had around 250 wines, focusing largely on California labels but making sure to include a few global vintages in the bottle shop. As they add a full bar, they will be streamlining the wine and beer selection to make way for the new range of spirits. They will be putting together eight or so signature cocktails to launch their bar program that will fit their chic interior. They have also expanded the kitchen and menu to now include a range of flatbreads, warm sandwiches, and other tasty bites to have alongside your drink. The outdoor patio offers live music from Thursday to Sunday and while many of the shows have been outside since reopening, they plan to bring the performances back indoors soon. In a time that has been challenging for so many, they feel grateful that they have been able to turn this moment into a success story, using this past year to grow Grapes & Hops With a Twist.

Nonna means ‘grandma’ in Italian, and Jacopo wanted a grandmother’s touch throughout the restaurant. The silverware and dishware intentionally do not match and look as if they came from a grandma’s cupboard. For the food, Jacopo wanted to make it as authentic as possible, focusing on traditional ingredients and techniques, including a pasta maker that comes in each morning to make that day’s pasta. Drinks are served in different vintage glasses that they collected over the years.

Jacopo incorporates a lot of ingredients into his cocktails that are often found in the kitchen and not a drink. These unique flavors also reveal his skill behind the bar and vast mixology experience.

For Jacopo, cocktail making is a “360-degree passion” covering everything from the drink’s execution and a full ice carving program to his coaching of the staff. Photographing each drink has led to a side passion for food and drink photography.

Beyond his restaurant and bar experience, Jacopo has authored books and made media appearances over his extensive career.

Having been in the industry for so long, those who have followed Jacopo through his different restaurants know him for a Balsamic Vinegar Martini, which has become one of his signature drinks.

In addition to this distinctive martini, Nonna has many unique cocktails with whimsical ingredients, like the Avocado Toast.

Muddled avocado is mixed with orange and lime juice plus a touch of simple syrup, and then completed with mango-infused rum and Cointreau. For something more summery and uplifting, try the Loredana that blends orange vodka and St Germain with a balancing bitterness coming from grapefruit juice and Aperol.

Of course, they have more classic cocktails like a Negroni and an Americano as well.

combines a hibiscus-spearmint infused vodka with a housemade elderflower cordial and a hint of lemon and rosemary.

Much of their menu is family-style dining and showcases the skills of chef Danelle Jarzinski with dishes like Coffee Rubbed Skirt Steak and Duck Chalupas. With such strong flavors on the menu, many of the cocktails are designed with the food in mind.

Salt Circles is built around their popular curried deviled eggs and includes turmeric-infused vodka with a hint of turbinado sugar, egg white, and citrus to brighten up the other flavors. To make the exotic drinks more familiar, their menu lists the general families that each cocktail belongs to. The Belladonna is their take on a Painkiller. Butter-washed rum from nearby KROBÅR Craft Distillery is added to pineapple and orange juice with some soothing spice coming from cream of coconut and the Caribbean allspice liqueur, falernum. The drink comes out in a special copper goblet and is flamed tableside with high proof rum and cinnamon dust to add a little extra warmth to this already inviting environment.

Their menu offerings focus on high-end comfort food like a lobster mac and cheese with some healthier options to balance things out — although Donovan mentions that the Red Eye Old Fashioned goes particularly well with their chicken and waffles dish. With a back and front patio, plus live music on the weekends, Pappy McGregor’s has a local yet vibrant vibe.

Being a speakeasy, the bar is all indoors, and true to the style of these hidden spots, is only accessible through a secret entrance.

The room is lined in dark wood and golden accents, with a marble countertop filling the space. Jazz music in the background and bartenders wearing themed clothing while using all golden bar tools takes guests back to a bygone era.

The elegant interior pairs well with their top selling drink, the Butter Pecan Old Fashioned.

Bourbon with a dash of Angostura and orange bitters is balanced by a butter pecan syrup and comes to you in a glass dome, where the drink is smoked with hickory. For the Forgotten Cocktails

In 2018, Eleven Twenty-Two (1122) was named as one of the Top Must-See 50 hidden speakeasies in the world by the Venue Report. When designing the bar, Donovan and Troy wanted guests to have an “elegant and elevated experience” that would transport them back to the Prohibition era. They recently began taking cell phones away, checking them at the door. Guests are sometimes hesitant at first but will often thank them on the way out, mentioning how much they enjoyed being away from their phone.

Just four blocks away from Paso’s Downtown City Park is Robin Fields Park, where The Pour House delivers local brews and moods. With warm wooden interiors and tap handles lining the walls, The Pour House has the coziness of a local drinking hole.

Offering 27 taps and a selection of bottled beers and wines, The Pour House is the perfect place to grab a pint and enjoy some socialization.

The tap list circulates with many of the beers coming from local breweries like Central Coast Brewing and SLO Brewing Co. Freshen up your day with a Barrelhouse Brewing Co. Strawberry Daze, which is brewed with wheat and fresh strawberries. The menu, of course, includes a range of IPAs like the classically flavored Mustang IPA by SLO Brew, and the ever-changing Luponic Distortion IPA from Firestone Brewing Co. brewed with a new set of hops each time it is released.

The Pour House does not have a kitchen, however they do allow outside food to be brought in. They are conveniently surrounded by local restaurants including Pizza Planet, Cali Grill, and Goshi Japanese Restaurant. Most of the time on Thursday through Sunday, they have live music in the outdoor courtyard so guests can enjoy some tunes with their brews. Come to The Pour House to watch some sports or just listen to a live band while sipping on local suds.

By The Unknown Golfer Whether or not you are a golf enthusiast, the Dairy Creek Golf Course should be on your list of stops this summer. The San Luis Obispo course recently went through a facelift, going from 18 to nine holes; but don’t let that fool you, it’s not your typical nine-hole track.

Dairy Creek offers a par-36 challenge, which includes three par-3s, three par-4s and three par-5s. Josh Heptig, golf course superintendent for San Luis Obispo County, said, “We are very proud of how the course has evolved. It plays as long as 3,400 yards for those golfers looking for a challenge, and it’s in beautiful shape right now.” The course also offers five different sets of tees to accommodate golfers of all levels.

Dairy Creek also offers a Toptracer® facility — an excellent place to start if you have never picked up a club, and an even better place to refine your skills if you’re experienced.

According to Heptig, the facility opened in October 2020 and it has been sold out nearly every day since. Toptracer uses the same technology used during PGA broadcasts, and allows golfers to monitor ball flight, launch angles, ball speed, curve, and

much more. “The Toptracer experience is fun for everyone, even the large percentage of people who have never played golf before. It’s a great social event and it has really added to the fun here at Dairy Creek,” added Heptig.

If you’re hungry or thirsty, Dairy Creek has you covered there as well. The course recently welcomed The Siren El Chorro to the family; the restaurant offers a diverse menu including delicious sandwiches, burgers, flat bread pizzas, a taco bar to die for, and much more. “Having The Siren on site has been a great relationship, and they have been awesome partners,” said Heptig. “Now that COVID-19 restrictions are starting to lighten up, we are talking about bringing live music to the venue as well, so it will be another fun option for locals and those visiting the area.”

They are also finalizing plans for a zipline, disk golf, miniature golf, a BMX skills course, and more. “This is going to be the place to be in San Luis Obispo County when it is complete,” added Heptig. The COVID-19 pandemic did slow some of the expansion progress, but according to Heptig, things are back on track and moving forward.

For those looking for some professional golf instruction, Dairy Creek also has robust offerings in that area.

The course hosts six or seven local professionals who offer lessons. The facility is also home to the California Polytechnic State University-SLO Mustang golf program, and its Cal Poly Practice Center which can be rented when the team isn’t out sharpening its skills.

It wasn’t all that long ago: Our grandparents would pile the kids and the dog into the car and go out for a Sunday drive in search of new adventures on the quieter, lazy highways not too far from home. In our region of the Central Coast, there are still many such backroads — the

blue highways on the nostalgic paper maps that denoted a two-lane, somewhat rural road off the well-beaten path, and connected tiny communities and estates to the outside world. In some ways, this feeling that time has forgotten us here still exists.

Along the Central Coast not far from the intense 101 freeway, you will find historic wooden buildings that dot oak woodlands, neatly nestled in the golden rolling hills of the coastal ranges.

Working farmsteads offer their inviting fruit stands, and cattle munch quietly into the gloam of another simple day.

Some of these mellower and often scenic byways have been quietly revitalized with vineyards and tasting rooms, as well as bicycle lanes for those wanting to slow it down even more.

This is essentially the character of the Edna Valley, and State Route 227.

The Edna Valley is just 5 miles inland from the coast, and essentially parallels the 101 freeway. It provides a nice alternative offshoot from the traffic, and the drive itself is recommended if you have a spare half hour.

Like many towns along the Central Coast, Edna started as a

deeded Mexican land grant in the 1840s. The highway first appeared in 1933 but didn’t officially become “the 227” until 1964 when it got its official number and corresponding signage.

It wasn’t until 2000 that the town of Edna changed hands again, when restoration began to replicate some of its old charm and began very actively inviting tourists into the area.

But let’s back up just a bit for a turn-by-turn, if you will. Heading south on Highway 101 through San Luis Obispo, the exit for the 227 lies across from the famed (and quirky) Madonna Inn. The Inn began in 1958 and features over-the-top decor and delightfully themed rooms. So far, I have only been in the men’s restroom, and I have to say, that alone was an unparalleled architectural experience — just not in the way you might think. It’s worth a trip to find out why.

After crossing Highway 101, the 227 then cuts through various SLO neighborhoods, and quickly becomes rural after you pass the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport. It’s a neat place to stop to watch airplanes, and grab a beer in one of the nearby breweries.

Summer also brings live music to the area, particularly at SLO Brew (slobrew.com) with its event center and beer garden.

But it you’re more of a wine drinker, drive on. The meandering 227 highway bisects and provides easy access to one of the denser concentrations of quality vineyards, cellars, and tasting rooms in California. And as we know, the Central Coast is world-renowned for its vineyards and vintners.

This appellation, blessed with the coastal fogs, creates incredible Mediterranean micro-climates that mimic, and arguably surpass, some of the other magnificent grape growing regions in the world like coastal Croatia, Italy, Spain, and France. One fun idea is to bring your

bicycle and park in Old Edna townsite, which sits at about the midway point of the 14-mile-long highway, and fan out on a ride to enjoy some of the nearby tasting rooms. The road is gently rolling on the valley floor and into the surrounding foothills, so the grades are not too stout.

All told, there are almost three dozen wineries and tasting rooms spread across the Edna Valley — many on the 227 itself, and several more off Orcutt Road which runs parallel to the east. Because of its climate, you’ll find plenty of top-notch chardonnays and pinot noirs in particular. No matter which you choose, you’ll find sprawling patios and stunning views at every stop. Take your time and discover other hidden gems, from a pumpkin patch to rescue centers for turtles, tortoises, and donkeys.

After passing through Edna Valley, the highway crests barbwire, eucalyptus, and cattle dotted foothills, and descends to Arroyo Grande Valley. After enjoying some tasting rooms, it’s nice to finish off the evening at one of a handful of diverse and highquality atmospheric eating options in Arroyo Grande Village, located at the southern terminus of the 227 where it hooks back to the 101. Recently, we chose Gina’s Italian kitchen. Seared scallops with penne pasta and handmade ravioli with shrimp and crab, paired with their solid selection of wine and draft beer, rounded out the day perfectly. So please go explore.
