frágiles ramas parecen bailar entre luces y sombras, como si se burlaran de los calcetines y los delantales colgados en el patio, allá abajo. Don Manuel nos obsequia su intimidad convertida en intensa observación - "pensando a través de mis ojos", escribió Joyce- como si cada imagen lo llevara a los inicios de su indagación fotográfica, como si cada una de ellas nos trajera algo de aquellas primeras obras maestras: las escaleras de piedra milenaria, las misteriosas cortinas de enredaderas, la humedad que se esconde de la luz del sol, el día abriéndose paso por cada resquicio de la maleza.

La de don Manuel es una mirada nostálgica que, sin embargo, está abierta a la captación de los nuevos signos. Ya desde sus primeras imágenes, don Manuel consignaba el extraño e inexorable maridaje entre el mágico mundo ancestral de los indígenas y la avasallante marcha hacia el progreso de la civilización occidental. Muchas de sus fotografías están tomadas desde un auto en marcha , y algunos autorretratos no son sino su tímido reflejo en el espejo retrovisor. Las imágenes mismas de los maniquíes desnudos, deidades posmodernas abandonadas en la soledad de los aparadores, son un comentario elocuente de la condición humana en el aciago final de este siglo.

Curioso insaciable, Manuel Álvarez Bravo sigue con interés los caminos de la fotografía digital y aumenta su colección de discos láser. No en vano , recientemente afirmó : "Creo que la verdadera libertad existe en la utilización de las posibilidades del arte". Sus Variaciones son , entre otras cosas, la encarnación viva de una libertad poco común, de una búsqueda y de un riesgo que

Incesante de Manuel

Con una nueva serie de imágenes desafiantes, Manuel Álvarez Bravo -con más de setenta años de ser fotógrafo y noventa y cinco de edadnos sorprende de nuevo . Lo primero que asombra es la manera tan sistemática con la que esta mirada privilegiada explora incesantemente las cosas que la rodean y establece implacablemente ciertas líneas de búsqueda. Esta exposición es una rica muestra de sus más recientes exploraciones sistemáticas.

En todas ellas hay siempre hallazgos, innovación, y a la vez fidelidad a los grandes temas de su obra. Por ejemplo, la serie dedicada a mirar maniquíes nos recuerda inevitablemente algunas de sus más célebres fotografías de 1930, como Maniquíes riendo , o Maniquí con voz. En estos nuevos maniquíes hay una fascinación renovada por esas presencias semiengañosas que simulan cuerpos de personas ofreciéndonos, no una ilusión completa de realidad pero sí un gesto, una posición y un volumen que son reales. La cámara captura esa realidad entera y la enfatiza ante nuestros ojos que así aprenden a mirarla con más atención.

Nos enseña a ver cómo un maniquí frente al balcón mira al horizonte mientras, extrañamente, como sin quererlo , los árboles reflejados en la ventana nos hablan de lo que tal vez mira. Otra mujer maniquí , por la posición que tiene casi parece haber sido congelada mientras caminaba. El reflejo de los automóviles en su ventana nos brinda una calle por donde podría suceder esa caminata. En cada caso el fotógrafo completa el cuadro vital aumentando lo enigmático que de por sí ya tienen esas presencias fantasmales , al añadir un reflejo como elemento semitransparente en un collage.

En OLra imagen , la muj er conge lada en su balcón es visLa por el fOLógrafo tan desde abajo que es esa misma posición forzada la que compleLa y aumenta lo enigmático de la fotografía. La presencia misLeriosa del maniquí crece al hacerse notar sutilmente la presencia implícita del que mira, es deci r, del fOlógrafo.

Hay fOLógrafos que casi se borran de su obra, o tros que se borran aunque no quisieran . Hay Lambién quienes enfaLizan su presencia con burdos manierismos que afecLan la eSLética de sus fOLografías . Manuel Álvarez Bravo , al conLrario, sabe eSLar presente de ma ne ra sULil pero decidida .

En toda la se rie de maniqu íes hay un sobreentendid o, algo que no se ve dentro de la fOLografía pero que e lla nos dice que ex isLe: la mirada fascinada del fotógrafo que vuelve excepcional para nosotros las cosas de la call e.

Cosas que tal vez miraría mos al pasar sin da rles impo rLa ncia.

Es curioso que en el cine, el gé nero do nde más se utiliza el procedimiento de Lener e invocar presencias importantes fuera de la pantalla, "fuera de cuadro", sea e l ci ne de misterio. Y es indud able que la ob ra de Manuel Álvarez Bravo, con su gran dominio de las presencias implíciLas, cultiva y fij a el miste rio e le mental de la vida. La magia misma que ti ene la vida y el acto extraño de poder mirarla , de poder deLenerla en una fOLografía , de poder enfatizar cie rtos rasgos de esa vida d ete nida .

El fotógrafo mex icano escribió en 1939 que el secreto abie n o de Atget consistía e n transfo rma r el torbellino d e técni cas y teo rías de' s u ti empo "en la magia se ncill a de vivir y trabaj a r".

Yeso es lo que nos ofrece con esta nueva ex posición Manuel Álvarez Bravo , un canto s iste máli co y profund o a la magia se ncill a de la vida . Y desde mucho a nle é a e la primera y más fu e n e de la presencias implícitas en la obra de e le a ni la, la del homb re que fesleja , al rilmo de us pasos, con la mirada y u cá mara , la magia de vivir y trabajar.

dedo que eñala , que hace dibujos misterio os en el aire . Pero u filigrana de pases mágico y a n e anale se resuelve fina lmente en una imagen sencilla que a pa re e eña lada ante nuestros ojos po r ese o rfebre paradójico.

La me ntalid ad barro a se reconoce po rque está poseída por la pasi ón del orfebre que pul e de mil mane ras su pieza hasta logra r la form a de purad a que prete ndía mo tra rno . Para varios histo riado res de las fo rmas artísticas, el barroco es el a n e de la a rgucia, del argumento sagaz que se ñala lo inédi to , el arte de la agudeza .

rodean. La mentalidad barroca intensifica altamente esa relación. Por eso el barroco es también un erotismo. Una pasión astuta que nos relaciona de manera más intensa con las cosas del mundo. Todo orfebre es en el fondo un erotómano. Todo hombre barroco guarda con el mundo una relación fundamentalmente erótica que lo hace indagar sistemáticamente los pliegues de su magia.

Manuel Álvarez Bravo es un hombre barroco pero pausado. La se ncillez de cada imagen es un momento de su ritmo complejo. Estas series de imágenes sistemáticas revelan a este hombre barroco como un gran orfebre apasionado. Y pa ra mí es evidente que su relación con el mundo es altamente erótica. Mira un pequeño espacio o un traspati o como quien corteja. Entra en la intimidad de las luces y las sombras como quien escucha entre unas y otras un a invitación , una demanda de tocar con la mirada.

Espera a que la luz cambie como si esperara a que creciera en el mundo el deseo de su mirada. Entre los árboles y los cables eléctricos descubre, o establece , un abrazo caprichoso.

Sabe que el mundo es un cuerpo extendid o ante nosotros como un desierto poblado de espejismos. Él mismo se mira como un espejismo, un reflejo en las partes brillantes de ese cuerpo. Espejismo es el bosque que flota sobre el cristal inclinado de un automóvil. Pero en el ámbito imaginario creado por la fotografía los espejismos son reales yesos bosques sí pesan , cuentan como formas de composición. Nuestra imagen puede hasta extraviarse en ellos.

llega a pesar lo mismo que una hoja y que su sombra: todo y nada. Los herrajes de su ventana, las enredaderas y la fili grana de sombras atan y desatan una co mplicid ad ex traña porq ue en la fotografía, para una composició n, todo lo negro pesa lo mismo , aunque sea vegetal, hierro o sombra.

En ese jardín interior, las mismas sombras se treparon alguna vez sobre un cuerpo desnudo, tocándolo , poseyéndolo. El fotógrafo dijo en el título de esa im age n que e ra un a te la de araña. Posesión eró ti ca por medio de las somb ras.

Pero es evi dente que el erotismo de Álvarez Bravo no está únicamente en sus cé leb res desnud os. Incluso la fotografía reciente de un a muj er frente al ma r, de espa ld a a nosotros, aunque está vestida, tiene tal carga erótica que podría ser exhibid a co n sus desnudos. Su erotismo generali zado es el co nductor de su tre mend a afirm ación vital. La alegría de vivir y trabaj ar, que Álvarez Bravo festejaba en el fotógrafo francés Atget , en él se convirtió en alegría eróti ca. Y su magia sencilla es la del deseo . La magia de la atracció n que nos imponen las formas pa ra penetrar en su misterio.

¿ o es ésta una manera de entender la pasión obsesiva po r los árboles y sus formas mi steriosas que muestra Álvarez Bravo en esta nueva serie de im ágenes) Observa r estas fo rmas ca pri chosas de la naturaleza, es detenerse en sus texturas acc id entadas , los giros de sus tro ncos y de sus ramas, la ga ma de sombras que despliegan , es reconoce r que se hicie ron lentamente, como todos los cuerpos, en el torbe llino fo rtuito y sistemático de la vida.

Cab les y ramas tejen un ciel o para nuestros ojos. Es cotidiano y a la vez extraño. Sólo una mirada barroca lo descubre, lo ex plo ra , y lo muestra pausadamente, co n si mplicidad . Sólo una mirada eróti ca se deja enredar en sus

nervaduras y goza ex pl o rand o su imaginaria bóveda de venas , sus colum nas orgánicas, su anatomía de gestos indescifrab les.

Otra observación minuciosa sucede en un pequeño espacio, cercano a su casa, dond e el fot ógrafo mira día a día las va ri acio nes que puede ex perim entar un te nd ede ro . Más allá de su ya clásica im age n de sábanas secándose sobre magueyes que él agudamente llamó Las la va nderas sob re-

entendidas, ve mos en esta nueva se rie de sobree ntendid os al sol, ese deseo pausado de un hombre metiéndose intermitenteme nte en el ritmo de la vida. El artista aquí mete su cuchara , su cá mara, su mirada curiosa , en el espacio pequeño que otros transfo rman día a día. y el sol también ayuda, como las nubes.

propios ángulos. Princi pi o erótico po r excelencia: el artista se mete ahí como si cada vez hicie ra lo mismo pero nunca es igual. El hombre barroco parece repetir hasta la saciedad lo que en rea lidad es apasionada proliferación de sutiles diferencias .

Esta afirmación vital de Manuel Álvarez Bravo es un nuevo canto a la vida en forma de fuga barroca de imágenes que se persiguen mientras las vemos.

Aprendo de nuevo a mirar con ellas, a entrar en el mundo de otra manera, a ser amante pausado (pero obsesivo) de lo que uno mira. Muchas de las imágenes creadas por Manuel Álvarez Bravo form an , desde hace varias décadas, parte de nuestra piel cultural. Hemos crecido con ellas y hemos aprendido a sentir y observar las cosas de otra manera a través de sus fotografías .

Possessing an except ional artistic sensibil ity and having mentored various generations of photographers, Manuel Alvarez Bravo is not only a great contemporary photographer but a poet and interpreter of images of Mexican time and space . His art, the re sult of an inqu iring spirit, is always discovering new perspectives in the topography of Mexico, a land w ith many as yet unexplored depths. Alvarez Bravo' s gaze has the ability to perceive, and tran slate into a universal language, the invisible signs tran smitted by objects and beings, angles and landscapes, whose mean ings cross over a country 's territorial and cultural boundaries.The astound ing series of photographs now on exhib it at the Centro de la Imagen is a show of th is universally influential art ist' s oeuvre, as he continues to produce work at the age of ninety-five . Shot between 1995 and 1997 as part of his recent work, these Variations explore nature and everyday life .
