Welcome to the December edition of C3SC’s members’ newsletter. First of all, we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended and supported this year's C3SC AGM and the Cardiff Volunteer Awards 2021. It was great to see so many of you and to hear your views during the AGM and workshops, and to hear from Councillor Huw Thomas, Leader of Cardiff Council. We really appreciate him taking the time out of his demanding schedule to deliver the key note speech. It was a packed agenda, and in response to your requests, we will be running two extra workshops to discuss how a joint strategy and C3SC’s Networks can work best to support the sector. We would also like to thank everyone who was involved in the Cardiff Volunteer Awards, with a big shout out to Jason Mohammad, radio and TV presenter for his congratulatory speech to all the volunteers, and to our sponsor - Wales and West Housing who kindly sponsored the event, and the Open University Wales and 2Buy2 who sponsored some of our award categories. It was amazing to see over 100 attendees on the day, and we hope everyone had a great time. As ever, our thanks go out to everyone in the local volunteering community for the invaluable differences you make. Cardiff Volunteer Awards 2021
It was amazing to celebrate volunteering at the Cardiff Volunteer Awards 2021 on the 12th November 2021 online with over 100 attendees, and to recognise the hard work of all our winners and nominees. It’s been a very busy time for us at C3SC. We are involved in and will be commissioning some exciting initiatives over the forthcoming months, providing new opportunities and resources for our members. Below gives an outline of some of the things that have been happening, and keep an eye on our website for further information about the things we have coming up:
WCVA Winter Pressures Fund Winter is historically a time of when demand and pressure increase on the health and social care system. The Winter Pressures Grant Fund will provide amounts of £500 - £5,000 to directly support local not for profit organisations working at a local community scale with activity that can help to alleviate pressures, create additional capacity/activity, or extend existing activity where other funds are running out.
Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan Hau / Seed Fund The Fund is to help deliver solutions in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan that focus on minimizing the impact of the pandemic on the voluntary sector and the communities they serve, reducing the inequalities across society highlighted or resulting from COVID-19. Applications must demonstrate how they meet the Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act 2014 four fundamental principles: Voice and control; prevention and early intervention; wellbeing; and coproduction, and must demonstrate at least one of the five ways of working of the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Act) 2015 - prevention, involvement, collaboration, integration and is long term (sustainable).
WHAT'S HAPPENING AT C3SC Cardiff Council Fund - supporting people with Learning Disabilities Details are currently being finalised; we will be inviting applications soon.
Active Inclusion Project Cardiff Volunteer Centre at C3SC will be delivering a project with the aim of supporting unemployed people from BAME backgrounds to develop and work towards an action plan that will help them towards sustainable employment.
Community Renewal Project The project seeks to connect businesses, the third sector and local people in harder to reach communities to support people to increase their employment and enterprise knowledge and skills as communities start to recover from the pandemic. By working with existing and emerging networks, we will enhance and add additional value to our core services by facilitating opportunities that will enable people who are on lower incomes or are further from the labour market to access a range of training and support options to enhance their chances of gaining and progressing in employment or build local businesses.
Tackling Loneliness and Isolation Project and Fund Community groups and activities play a key role in reducing loneliness and isolation. This project will aim to reach out and identify those groups that are struggling to restart their community activities and offer them bespoke support on what they need to re-establish themselves sustainably. There will also be a barriers fund that will provide small amounts of funding for groups wishing to restart or upscale their current services and activities.
WHAT'S HAPPENING AT C3SC Building Empowerment and Resilience Project C3SC will be organising a range of networking events, training guidance and support on opportunities for voluntary and community groups to deliver projects that build empowerment and resilience to the threats from the impacts of climate change. We will provide information, advice and deliver events and individual training sessions on funding applications, successful bidding and project funding and delivery, and will focus on groups and organisations working with those who are socially and economically disadvantaged and vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
EU Food Poverty Fund C3SC will coordinate the development and delivery of a training package for Cardiff community food retail project staff and volunteers, leading to more people being able to access better quality, nutritious food.
C3SC Networks 2022 will see the launch of our refreshed member network meetings and events, connecting members and partners. Dates and details will be posted on our website. We are looking forward to welcoming members - old and new - to our Network sessions.

At Cardiff Volunteer Centre our priorities are supporting volunteering and ensuring good quality, inclusive and accessible opportunities for people from a diversity of backgrounds, and promoting the positive contributions volunteering makes to the wellbeing of both the volunteers themselves and the people, communities and organisations they help.

Upcoming Events
Volunteer Recruitment, Selection and Induction training - Thursday, 9th December 2021 @ 2:00pm-4:30pm. This workshop will explore the range of methods to attract a diversity of volunteers. By the end of the session participants will be able to recognise ‘selection’ as a two way process, be familiar with a range of selection tools, understand the use of vetting procedures including DBS checks and recognise their limitations. The Volunteer Centre hosts online volunteer drop in sessions every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 1 – 2 pm for anybody who is interested in learning more about how to get in to volunteering. C3SC Membership We are pleased to confirm we will be rolling out our membership renewal process with the launch of our new membership platform, following delays arising from the pandemic - with thanks for your patience. The new site offers secure space to promote your activities, facilities and services and to connect, and is a great way to help people find out more about the range and types of community activities and services you provide and taking place across the City as well as opportunities to volunteer. C3SC has been working with its members to develop a strategy that can strengthen the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector and help the sector to develop sustainably. We are inviting voluntary organisations, local community groups, social enterprises and individuals to have their say and help to co-produce and develop this Strategy: 2021 - Cardiff VCSE Strategy framework draft. LATEST FUNDING AND SUPPORT
C3SC Briefing - In this briefing, we provide up to date information on COVID-19 related support to groups responding to the impact of the pandemic in our communities. Our aim is helping voluntary groups delivering across Cardiff to navigate through the quantities of information that is available. The information below is a selection of available funding applications relevant to the current situation. Third Sector Resilience Fund (TSRF) for Wales - Phase 3 funding now open – survive and thrive support for voluntary organisations in Wales during the COVID-19 pandemic. Managed by WCVA, grants of up to £50,000 are available as part of the £2.4m of support announced by Welsh Government. To enable a fair and just recovery in Wales, the new phase of TSRF is prioritising organisations that support people/communities of protected characteristics. Community Asset Loan Fund Funded by Welsh Government the Community Asset Loan Fund will offer loan finance to groups looking to bring property into community ownership.
Ocado Foundation for Good - Grants of up to £1,000 to charities, community organisations, community interest companies, academic institutions, and local authorities for community projects which focus their efforts on three core areas; skills for the future, natural resources and responsible sourcing - Closing date 31st December 2021. Older People’s Fund - Community Foundation Wales is offering funding to support groups that can evidence a sustained beneficial impact on older people’s lives who are excluded or disadvantaged - Closing date 12pm, 12th January 2022. The Landfill Disposal Tax Communities Scheme - The 7th round is now open for grant applications between £5,000 - £49,000 - Deadline for applications: 23 January 2022, successful projects will start in March 2022. Tesco Community Grants - Tesco Community Grants support thousands of local community projects and good causes across the UK. The scheme is open to all registered charities and not-for-profit organisations, with priority given to projects that provide food and support to young people. Henry Smith Charity Strengthening Communities Programme - 3 year grant (with potential for 9 years in total) for organisations with an income between £20,000 - £500,000. Grants can cover up to 50% of the organisation’s running costs. Localgiving Crowdfund Wales' Programme - Crowdfund Wales, provides organisations with a fantastic opportunity to raise extra funding through crowdfunding. Participants will receive: A subsidised Localgiving annual membership, a crowdfunding mentor and ongoing training, a £250 grant unlocked when you deliver a successful crowdfunding campaign. To benefit from Crowdfund Wales, simply complete your registration via the link below using the promocode WALES150 and you will be sent a short application form to finalise your participation.
Community Ownership Fund Community Ownership – Together we can make a difference - UK government is providing £150 million over 4 years to support community groups to take ownership of assets and amenities at risk of being lost. The Stanley Smith (UK) Horticultural Trust The Stanley Smith (UK) Horticultural Trust - Funding for All offers grants of up to £5,000 for projects which promote horticulture; biological diversity, the creation, development, preservation and maintenance of gardens and the advancement of horticultural education. Lloyds Bank Foundation - Is offering 2 year, unrestricted grants of up to £50k for small but vital charities helping people overcome complex social issues and rebuild their lives. The Cumber Family Charitable Trust - The Cumber Family Charitable Trust offer funding for charities working in the areas of welfare, education, medical or disadvantaged children's needs, or agriculturally/conservation focused. Allchurches Trust - Giving hope beyond COVID-19 by offering funding for churches and Christian charities to care for heritage and engage with communities. National Lottery Heritage Fund Local Places for Nature - Local Places for Nature is a capital grant scheme intended to enable areas of highest deprivation, urban communities and/or those with least access to nature in Wales to restore and enhance nature 'on their doorstep'. The Moondance Foundation: The COVID-19 Relief Fund -The Moondance Foundation COVID-19 relief fund has earmarked an additional £10 million in 2021 to distribute to Welsh charities and organisations who are supporting those struggling as a direct result of Covid. Funding is available for registered charities to help them with staff retention, current activities currently in jeopardy, and evolution of services to adapt to the current crisis.
The National Lottery Community Fund Wales - The two main funding programmes – People & Places and Award for All remain open with changes in priority to support communities that have to adapt to the increasing challenges of COVID-19. The Woodward Charitable Trust/ Children’s summer play schemes Will fund programmes that run for a minimum of 2 weeks or 10 days across the summer holidays. Registered charities can apply for awards in the range of £500 – £1,000. The Volant Trust - COVID-19 Response Fund - The Volant Trust accepts applications from charities in the UK and internationally that demonstrate a strong focus on alleviating social deprivation and helping vulnerable groups who have been particularly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Austin & Hope Pilkington Trust - Grant rounds in 2021 will fund projects that help combat homelessness, and work with refugees and asylum seekers; both groups have been disproportionately hit by COVID-19. The National Lottery Heritage Fund - Applications are open for National Lottery Grants for Heritage from £3,000 up to £5million. Projects that contribute to community recovery from the COVID-19 crisis will be prioritised. Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (JRCT) - The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (JRCT) has announced a new phase of support for organisations in the light of the COVID-19 crisis – funding which specifically responds to the dual harms of the pandemic and systemic racism. Sport Wales Be Active Wales - Sport Wales will support sports clubs and community organisations that have sport as part of their service delivery to prepare for the reopening of sport and physical activities. Whether you have rent to pay or need to prepare health and safety signage, take a look at how the Be Active Wales Fund could support you.
Viridor & Prosiect Gwyrdd Community Fund - Viridor has committed £50,000 that is available to community initiatives that operate in the Local Authority regions that make up Prosiect Gwyrdd; Caerphilly County Borough Council, City of Cardiff Council, Monmouthshire County Council, Newport City Council and Vale of Glamorgan Council. Funding is available to schemes considered to have the most benefit to the local community and meet the key objectives of the Fund Follow the above link for eligibility criteria and how to apply. Warburton’s Community Grants - A small grant up to £400 to support charitable organisations that require small grants to help them deliver a broader range of activities. Quarterly deadlines in August and November. The Yapp Charitable Trust - Offer grants to small UK registered charities for core funding with a total annual expenditure of less than £40,000 who are undertaking work that focuses on specific priority groups. Organisation must be established for a minimum of 3 years. Federation of Museums, Art Galleries of Wales - The Federation has secured £325,000 in funding to create a COVID-19 Resilience grant scheme for Welsh museums and heritage attractions. Grants will be made available to independent heritage attractions and museums in Wales. New Active Inclusion Fund for COVID-19 - WCVA has introduced a short, simplified round of AIF funding that will be run for organisations already on the Approved Beneficiaries List (ABL), to support social inclusion and improved employability prospects. The funding will assist with measures taken to alleviate the COVID-19 crisis (that are not already funded by other sources), and support activities to build recovery after the emergency period ends. The fund will support six-month projects with a total cost of no more than £25,000, all with grants of 80%. Applications will be via MAP, WCVA’s multi-application portal, and we aim to have projects up and running within 4-6 weeks of submission. The Wales Co-operative Centre has a COVID-19 Helpline for the social business sector in Wales - Social Business Wales is providing help with enquiries about cash flow, HR, digital platforms, marketing and communications and a range of other areas that might need re-thinking in light of the Coronavirus. The Ironmongers’ Company - The Ironmongers' Company, as part of its charitable activities, works to promote the craft of ironwork. Support is given primarily for the conservation of historic ironwork or the creation of new decorative iron or steel work.
Funder responses in light of the COVID-19 virus: Many funders are taking a coordinated response to COVID-19 and its impacts on voluntary sector organisations. These funders are committed to support their grant recipients by listening to them and being flexible with grants and reporting deadlines. Community Response to COVID-19 - Enabling Safe and Effective Practice This guide produced by WCVA provides useful information to support the incredible community response in supporting others to cope with the impacts of COVID-19 – it provides a list of dos and don’ts as well guidance in supporting a volunteer workforce. COVID-19 Directories of Support Services in Cardiff C3SC has been mapping services supporting the community during the COVID19 lockdown and recovery. These directories are updated on a regular basis and can help you signpost individuals to relevant services. You can also add your services by responding to this short COVID-19 Survey. British Red Cross – Project Manager – VCS Coordinator Salary: £39,626 per annum (pro rata) Hours: 35 per week Contract: Fixed term contract/secondment until 31 March 2022 As Project Manager you will lead projects and / or workstreams within strategically significant programmes. Projects will be executed on time, to budget and to specification agreed – and to realise change across the organisation. You will be working on a specific project to review the co-ordination of the voluntary and community sector (VCS), including its relationship with statutory and private sectors, at times of emergency.
