We found that when people were booking to use the barn, they were asking about accommodation in the area and apart from 2 B and B’s on the eastern side of Freeling there was nowhere to stay nearby It became obvious to us therefore that the second barn should be used for onsite accommodation We planned 3 rooms in the barn but then also realised that 3 rooms are not enough so we had many family conversations as to how we could accommodate more people in some sort of building that suited the farming area and arrived at the idea of converted silos

The barn rooms have a king-size bed, a large bathroom with a bath, a lounge area with smart TV, and a dining table and chairs Each also has a private courtyard with a table and chairs

Here at the barns we have 2 limestone barns on our property that were built in 1921 The building offered work for people in the local district post-WW1.

Our family purchased the land where the barns are located in 1980 We used to store machinery in the barns but as their doorways are lower in height than much of the modern machinery used in agriculture today, they weren’t really of great use to us so we basically spent many years using them to store random, smaller items and a lot of junk!

We had toyed with the idea of doing them up one day to use for family and friends' celebrations. Finally, we started the renovations on the first barn; it became a whole family project and we ended up with a lovely space

Once the builder shared photos of the completed barn on social media we were overwhelmed by the number of people wanting to use it. We were a little intimidated as this was a whole new industry to us as farmers! We just happened to cross paths with someone who assists with wedding venues and wedding planning so they came on board with us and we now share the amazing space with others for their family celebrations.

In our function spaces we have the main room that has a polished concrete floor, and a smaller room(originally used to store chaff) that has jarrah flooring.

There is reverse cycle air conditioning and a sound system including a walkabout microphone We have tables, chairs, barrels, and also a bar that is on castors so it can be moved and used where it suits whoever is using the space. We have a commercial-style kitchen with a cool room

There are two lawn areas that can be utilized for ceremonies, casual seating, or games and the larger lawn area is big enough and flat so can have a marquee erected on it if need be. There is plenty of parking available also

We have partnered with Venyu and for anyone who books with The Barns of Freeling, they also have the experience of the Venyu planners to assist them with making their function the best it can be Venyu help with coordinating prior to the event but can also be there on the day and ensure your function runs smoothly and you have no worries and can just have a great time

The new silo rooms are very spacious with a lounge area, dining area, sweeping staircase up to the bedroom with a king-size bed, and comfortable lounge chairs where you can relax as you look out the windows to the north, overlooking farmland with views towards the Bethel and Kapunda hills They also have a large bathroom with a bath

Each of the 6 rooms has a kitchenette with a fridge, microwave, kettle, coffee maker, and a toaster. There is a sink where you are able to wash glasses, mugs, or dishes and also fill your kettle rather than having to do that in the bathroom There is a washing machine and dryer on site to be used if needed

A room at the end of the accommodation barn will have a billiard table, a solid timber slab table with stools to sit at and lounges to be utilized for relaxation as a group rather than visitors having to all be in one of the bedrooms

Howtomake:

1 Melt50gbutterinaheavysaucepan Whenitfoams, add450gpotatoes cutinto1cmcubes 1smallonion cutthesameasthepotatoes,and450gwhitepartsof leeks,sliced,andtosstheminthebutteruntiltheyare wellcoated

2 Seasonwellwithsaltandfreshlygroundpepperand tossagain Putadiscofgreaseproofpaperontopof the vegetables to keep in the steam, then cover the panwithitslid

3 Cook over a gentle heat for 10 mins or until the vegetablesaresoftbutnotcoloured

4 Uncover the pan and discard the paper Pour in 850mlofthelightchickenorvegetablestock,bringto aboil andsimmeruntilthevegetablesarejustcooked

about 5 minutes Do not overcook or the soup will loseitsfreshflavour

5 Purée in a blender until silky smooth, in batches if necessary thentasteandadjusttheseasoning Return thesouptoacleanpanandstirinthree-quartersofa 142ml carton of whipping cream and 125ml full-fat milk

6 To finish the soup finely shred the white part of 1 leekandgentlycookitinasmallknobofhotbutterfor afewminsuntilitissoftenedbutnotcoloured

7 Reheat the soup to a gentle simmer (add some extrastockatthispointifthesoupistoothickforyour liking) thenpourintowarmedbowls

8 Drizzletheremainingcreamovereachserving top withalittlepileofbutteredleeksandascatteringof chivesandblackpepper andserveatonce
