LOCAL MEMORIES: By Penny Young “Beware the Vidders” I asked my cousin Richard in America – surely there must have been a newspaper article about the shooting – a few hours later, this appeared. It was from a newspaper called the Lancaster Examiner in USA, dated Wednesday 22nd June 1853. “Notwithstanding the heat of the weather, and the danger of collapsing, in the case of becoming excited, a couple of our youngsters, with straggling beards, have been amusing themselves by falling in love with the same woman, and then falling out with each other. The Lotharios, respectively named James M. Jeffries and Frank S. Jacobs, boarded at the Mansion House, corner of Eleventh and Market Streets. Jacobs (the note banker) is a wealthy young man of this City, not particularly bright; but has gained notoriety by the marked attention he paid to an actress, attached as a chorister to Madame Bishop’s Opera Troupe, which performed some months since at the “Walnut” in this city. She also boards at the Mansion, and they apparently were as happy as turtledoves, when the relentless Jeffries (the medical student) stepped in, and robbed Jacobs of his lady-love’s affections, which, by-the-bye, were rather mercurial, floating on the surface of the stream of time, ready to be caught by any daring passer-by. Passion fired Jacob’s brain; jealousy, that “green-eyed monster of the soul”, stung him to madness; consequently, about 2 o’clock on Saturday morning last, Jacobs and the bar-tender of the Mansion House, entered Jeffries room. The fiery southerner, anticipating an attack from the “jealous Moor”, seized and levelled a pistol. He fired and lodged several buckshot in the side of Jacobs. The smell of powder, and the sting of the leaden messengers cooled the ardour of Jacobs; he made a judicious retreat and Jeffries was arrested. Jacobs, fortunately for Jeffries, was not dangerously wounded. Young men should take Mr Weller’s advice – ‘Beware the Vidders’ – “. My goodness – I had never heard that maxim before and asked Richard. He came back with his understanding of the sentiment - ‘a widow and also a woman with children, the latter of which she conceals from potential suitors until they are entrapped’. I googled the saying for myself and found that it came from closer to home – Charles Dickens no less and in particular – Pickwick Papers, first published in 1836. It is something of a coincidence that the ‘proverb’ comes after Mrs Bardell brings an action against Pickwick for Breach of Promise (where this whole saga started months ago!) In the book, Tony Weller marries his troublesome widow, and his consequently miserable marriage causes him to give this advice to his son, Sam – “Beware o’ the Widders”! The news hound for the Lancaster Examiner is certainly well read, perhaps fancying himself as something of an author, such is his flowery language, and he doesn’t seem to have a high opinion of Lucy either! I now turn to the divorce between William Abraham Moore and Lucy Moore (nee Kirkham). The case was heard at a special sitting of the supreme court in New York on 19th May 1858, almost five years after the shooting incident at the Mansion House, which had appeared in many of the testimonies. The judge heard all the evidence, which seems to have come solely from the plaintiff, William Moore, with nothing from the defendant, Lucy Moore. “….. it is both judged and decreed that the marriage between the said plaintiff, William A. Moore 16

To advertise in Village Bystander please call Julie on 07928 778457

and the said defendant, Lucy Moore be dissolved and the same is hereby dissolved by and accordingly and the said parties are and each of them is freed from the obligations thereof. And it is further adjudged and decreed that it shall be lawful for the said Plaintiff to marry again in the same manner as though the said Defendant, Lucy Moore, was actually dead; but it shall not be lawful for the said Defendant, Lucy Moore, to marry again until the said plaintiff, William A. Moore is actually dead.” My goodness, that is harsh, some kind of judgement of Solomon, or perhaps normal in cases of adultery. I accept that Lucy was undoubtedly the guilty party here, but the sentence of the judge will have made her life very difficult in the future. This was in an age when ‘respectable’ women did not work and the judge has practically condemned Lucy to a life ‘on the stage’, which in reality is all she has ever known, and perhaps alright when she is young, with her looks, but not so much fun as she gets older. So, how long does Lucy have to wait before she could legally marry again? Not terribly long, as it happens. Perhaps it is now time to look at the innocent party in all of this – William Abraham Moore – the young man from Bath in Somerset, who knew Lucy when they were children and who emigrated to New York at the very young age of sixteen. Coming from this musical enclave in Bath in the 1820’s and 1830’s, it would seem that William had a touch of the greasepaint about him and whilst USA census documents show him as a theatre manager, his early career saw him on the stage, as a singing witch in Macbeth and later as a prompter, before he toured Europe with Cooke’s Royal Circus. I am assuming it was on one of his documented tours of Europe that William met a young lady, Annie Mary Katon, who was to become William’s second wife. Annie was born in England and was possibly only a teenager herself, according to census records, at least 15 years younger than her husband. They married the year after the divorce case, in 1859, the same year as their first child, Sophie Agnes Moore was born. A son, William, followed and another daughter, Minnie completed the family. Sadly, William (Snr) died aged just 46 in 1871, leaving a young widow, under thirty years old, and the children aged 12, 10 and seven. There is a wonderful obituary to him in the New York Daily Herald, which I have paraphrased here. “We regret to announce the death of this popular and well known theatrical manager. Mr Moore had been confined to his home for over two years, suffering from dropsy and heart disease. As is the case with too many members of his profession, Mr Moore did not ‘look out for the rainy day’, when in prosperous circumstances. He leaves behind a widow and children in actual want and we trust that managers and actors will display their traditional benevolence by according to them that assistance in the name of the deceased, which they, for his sake as well as for their own, so much deserve.” To recap – the disastrous ‘Breach of Promise Case’ has seen only losers. Charles William Kendall dead aged 39, destitute in New Zealand. William Abraham Moore dead aged 46 leaving a young widow and children. And Lucy? We have a sighting of a Mrs Lucy Moore on the American equivalent of our Titanic disaster. Is it her? If so – does she survive? Hopefully more next time.

Get the call - become an on-call firefighter Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking to recruit more on-call firefighters to help serve local communities across the county. CFRS is looking for men and women from all backgrounds to become on-call firefighters and provide emergency cover from either their home or their workplace. On-call firefighters are a vital part of our Service and community. They respond to a wide range of incidents, from fighting fires, attending road traffic collisions, animal rescues to supporting other emergency services. In addition to responding to emergency incidents, our on-call firefighters support their communities by providing information and advice on a range of community safety topics. They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit to being available plus additional payments for attending incidents and drill nights (one evening a week for two hours). It’s a hugely rewarding role, and we hope to encourage members of the community from all backgrounds to get in touch and find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter. Visit www.cambsfire.gov.uk/oncall for more information.

Gardening and Outdoor Section: p.22-23 Lee’s Gardening Corner November - let's hope we are lucky enough not to get frosted!

By now your winter interest pots and hanging baskets should be ready to go, filled with winter flowering pansies, violas, cyclamen. With some small evergreen plants as a focal point. Don't let pots sit in water as if they freeze the plants will die, use something to keep the pots raised from the ground to allow it to drain properly. There should still be colour in the garden, trees will have their autumn hues, berries are abundant at the moment so hopefully there will be lots to last the birds. Plants now in their prime are autumn flowering Crocus, Cyclamen, Fatsia japonica, and the Cornus alba leaves are falling leaving beautiful red stems for the winter. If the weather has been kind, and it's not too water logged or frozen, there is still time to plant: roses, shrubs, trees and all herbaceous perennials can go in. Firm in well, water too, they need a good start. Now is also one of the times to divide herbaceous plants, dig them up and depending on how big the clump is either divide in half with a spade or cut into smaller pieces, they can be replanted (or given to friends - plants for free!!). If you haven't already then now is a good time to tidy the greenhouse and bring in all the tender plants to protect them from the winter weather. Clay pots can be wrapped in sacking or bubble wrap to stop them cracking - plants kept like this will need minimal watering until next years growing season starts. The second half of November is the best time to plant Tulip bulbs, this is because of a fungal disease that can exist in the soil if it is warm. There are some varieties of Apple and pear that will still be available for picking now, also cabbages, cauliflowers, leeks and parsnips are soon ready, and if you want to get a head start on vegetables then broad beans can be sown now. Depending on how you like your garden it can now be tidied up, with plants cut back and leaves piled up for compost. But if you can bear to leave this job until February/March time the wildlife will thank you for it - the birds will love the seed heads, insects and little creatures will find warm, safe hiding places in leaves and old plants. Happy Autumn 22

Great Staughton and its People How a Huntingdonshire Village made its Mark on England’s History On sale at the White Hart, Great Staughton Price £20 (hardback) and £15 (paperback). Cash only please. Also on Amazon; Waterstones (St Neots); St Neots Museum; Huntingdon Records Office or reserve a copy from Anthony Withers at aw.staughton@gmail.com The White Hart is open weekdays from 4pm and from 12pm weekend Several people have asked how long it took to research and write the book. The honest answer is forty years. In the 1980s I contributed ‘Snippets of History’ to our village magazine and subsequently I began to collect bits of information about some of the people who were to feature in the book. Intensive research, I quickly discovered, was not compatible with running a company so things came to a full stop until I retired. The help I received from people and institutions was gratifying. The National Portrait Gallery, Greenwich Museum, the British Library and many others were very happy for me to use portraits and paintings in some of the chapters. An article in a model railway magazine brought an enormous amount of information about John Howey’s Staughton Railway (Chapter 23 of the book). Another great discovery was Abebooks, a worldwide consortium (run by Amazon) of second hand and antiquarian booksellers. From them came a book on Anglo-Saxon charters (from Pennsylvania); the Book of Ely (from Berlin); E Kosminsky’s Marxist interpretation of the Hundred Rolls arrived courtesy of a library in North Carolina. And of course I read, or skipped through, hundreds of relevant books and documents. Then I began to write it all down, but that’s a story for next month. Anthony Withers

The Invitation by Patrick MacDonald I’ve been fascinated by a gravestone in my local churchyard for a while now, so much so I decided to make it the centrepiece of my new novel. It was erected by public subscription by the local townspeople of Godmanchester and describes the murder of Mary Ann Weems by her husband. This inspired the hook for the novel: a woman receives an invitation to her own funeral…

Claire Evans is a top forensic pathologist. At the peak of her career, she has successfully overseen countless investigations into some of Britain’s most brutal and complex crimes. Arriving home late one night, she finds what at first appears to be a simple card has been delivered. But it’s a very far from ordinary piece of mail. It’s an invitation. To her own funeral. Uncertain as to whether it’s a hoax or something more sinister, Claire begins to search for answers. Then her son, Toby, is abducted from his nursery school. With her son’s life now in jeopardy as well as her own, Claire must identify her tormentor immediately. But it may already be too late. You can find the novel on Amazon. Hope you enjoy it! 26

Things are not always what they seem Jan sat at a small table in a wine bar, with a glass of white wine in front of her. She looked thoughtful and anxious. Anyone looking at her might think she was waiting for a date. In fact, she was waiting for Amy, the ex-wife of her husband Nick. Jan, Amy and Sally had become friends at secondary school, and had enjoyed some lovely times together. However, all that had now changed dramatically. Jan and Nick had had an affair while Nick was still married to Amy. Jan and Nick had now been married for a year, and they had a baby son called Ollie, but the relationship between Jan and Amy was still very strained. As for Sally, she had been found murdered in a wood just a few weeks ago. Jan and Amy had been horrified, and were still struggling to come to terms with it. To have a friend die was bad enough – but murder was incomprehensible. Jan looked up as the door opened and Amy rushed in and up to her table. ‘Where’s Nick?’ she asked without any form of greeting. ‘Why the hell have you asked me to meet you here?’ Jan asked. ‘I said, where’s Nick?’ Amy repeated. ‘He’s gone to the gym’, Jan replied, ‘Why?’ Amy didn’t answer, but fired another question at Jan. ‘Where’s your baby?’ ‘Look, Amy, that’s really none of your business, is it?’ Amy stared hard at Jan, until Jan replied, reluctantly. ‘He’s at home. Mum’s looking after him’. Amy cut to the chase. ‘Listen, Jan. You need to go back home, get Ollie and leave, before Nick gets back from the gym.’ Jan shook her head. ‘Why on earth would I do that, Amy?’ Amy took a deep breath. ‘It’s Nick! Nick killed Sally. A witness has come forward. His car was at the murder scene. I know our relationship is not good at the moment, but I’m telling you all this for your own good. You and your baby are in huge danger and you need to get out of that house.’ Different emotions flitted across Jan’s face. She didn’t want to believe Amy, but she had known for a while that something was very wrong. She knew that Nick was telling lies. She knew that he was trying to control her. She had found a phone in his coat pocket. He had exchanged lots of texts with someone. There was no name, but the last text asked whoever was receiving it to meet him in the woods where Sally’s body was found. The date on the text was the night Sally was murdered. Jan slumped forward onto the table, her head in her hands. ‘Oh my God’, she said, her voice breaking. ‘I just can’t believe this! What am I going to do?’ Amy took Jan’s hands in hers, and looked deep into her eyes. There was a long pause. ‘And stop there’. ‘Brilliant’, shouted the Director. ‘That was a really tense scene, and you both portrayed all the different emotions of the characters so well. Take a break and get yourselves a coffee, and we’ll have a go at running it again.’ Hazel Wright: hazelwright1801@gmail.com 32

Soft Landing Paul Kinally of Peter Lane & Partners in Kimbolton explains why the autumn property market will throw up plenty of opportunities for positive buyers and sellers. Some people think that an aircraft touching down on a runway is a landing while others regard it as a controlled crash. There are different ways at looking at most things. Take the word strike for instance. The word is in the news at the moment as thousands of key public service workers down tools and walk out. Estate agents on the other hand urge buyers and sellers to strike while the iron is hot. The press is telling everyone that the property market is flat at the moment while many property professionals like us think it is brim full of opportunities. There may be fewer properties for sale than there were, but new ones are entering the market all the time. This is because some people’s circumstances mean that house moves need to be made immediately; they are unable to wait for a change in the market. A seller’s need to sell and a buyer’s need to buy are often regarded as two separate things. But looked at another way each requirement satisfies the other by offering both seller and buyer a positive solution to their individual needs. Good estate agents look for these perfect opportunities and then offer seller and buyer the chance to strike when the time is right. Some of our competitors also tell us this market is dead and they have little to do. Conversely, we see life in every market. If you are thinking of moving and would like to discuss any aspect of the process, Paul can be contacted at the Kimbolton Office on 01480 860400 or paul.kinally@peterlane.co.uk

Festival Success The rebranded Festival was hosted by The Bedfordshire Ramblers groups and ran between the 9th and 17th September 2023. The festival was a great success with the 4 Bedfordshire Ramblers Groups hosting 38 walks during the period and attracting over 525 walkers. Walks ran all over the county and comprised Wellbeing Walks of various lengths as well as short walks, long walks and interest walks. There was even a litter pick run in Dunstable which attracted 25 children. It is always lovely to encourage the youngsters to join in! One of the highlights of the festival was a day walking along the River Great Ouse followed by the John Bunyan boat, which after lunch carried us all home again up the Ouse. Whilst we would always expect to have our own Ramblers join our walks, the Festival allows us to publicise our activities to a wider audience and we are delighted to announce that 40% of the walkers were new to us. As a Ramblers Group we are very proud of our beautiful little county and it is always a pleasure to introduce others to the hidden gems and beautiful countryside that we have discovered and explore regularly. Let’s hope that we have inspired more people to get outside and explore the area. We are already starting to plan the Bedfordshire Festival of Autumn Walks 2024, which will run from 7th – 15th Sept 2024. So put the dates in your diaries and come and join us. With special thanks to all the walk leaders from Leighton Buzzard Ramblers, North Beds Ramblers, Lea & Icknield Ramblers and Ivel Valley Walkers – we couldn’t have done it without you. This term 1st Kimbolton Rainbows have been working on their ‘Innovate’ badge. We conducted several ‘exciting experiments’, including making magic flowers that opened by themselves when placed on water, we explored magnetism by finding out what materials would be attracted to our magnetic wands, and we created volcanoes that ‘erupted.’ We also took it in turns to pretend to be robots so that the other Rainbows could give us directions and practise simple coding. No two weeks are ever the same at Rainbows! We are a friendly group of 4 to 6 year olds who enjoy making friends through playing games, singing songs, doing craft and cookery and a whole lot of other fun activities. This month I’m going to talk about writing retreats, and how beneficial they can be if you are looking for inspiration and are wanting to wake up your creative side. I am very lucky in that I have a writer friend who lives on the glorious Isle of Arran. A couple of years ago she invited me and some other authors to her house for a writing retreat. There are only ever four or five of us, and I should add that we all ‘met’ each other first on Twitter and then became friends in real life too. We keep our retreat relaxed. We present a workshop each over the course of the week, to which a local writers’ group are invited, and we take turns to cook one night too. Other than that, there are no commitments other than plenty of lovely writing time. If you are looking for a writing retreat, they are not all like this as we have crafted ours to suit our needs. There are others that are packed with learning opportunities, workshops, writing sprints and other organised writing activities. Some are abroad, many are in beautiful surroundings. You therefore need to do some investigating to work out if the retreat you are thinking of attending will suit you. Sometimes all we need is a few days away with no interruptions to finish a project, in which case you can just book a hotel room somewhere. I have to say that in the run up to this year’s retreat various things went wrong with travel plans, atrocious weather and illnesses, and it looked very much as if it might have to be cancelled. As I was contemplating this possibility, I immediately decided I’d just have my own retreat at home instead. After all I’d told all my clients I was away so no one would come looking for me. This was a definite option. And it’s something I’ve done before. Prepare the week’s food in advance, turn off all notifications, disconnect your laptop from the internet, cancel all commitments and hunker down for the duration to get down those words. It's something I can highly recommend. The difference, of course, is that I miss out on being in the presence of other writers, which is always inspiring. Today I have been, and presented, at a writers’ workshop on flash fiction. But more on that next month… 44

Canine Corner - preventing separation anxiety in puppies Working from home has become increasingly common and this is great news for our dogs. However, problems can arise if we don’t teach them to cope when left alone so this month I thought we’d look at preventing separation anxiety in puppies…. Your puppy has been with his mother and litter mates from birth and has probably never been on his own. To prevent separation problems later on, it is important to gradually accustom him to being left alone. Set up a safe area where he can be left, this may be a puppy playpen, a crate or a small area of your house that is separated off. Ideally, your puppy will still be able to see and hear you from the safe area so use stair gates instead of closing doors. Make it cosy and fun- your puppy should enjoy being in there. Include a comfy bed and a selection of chew toys, especially ones that can be filled with food. Your puppy will want to follow you around most of the time- this is perfectly normal. Leave the gate to the safe area open so that he can come and go as he pleases. Puppies sleep a lot and need naps during the day. After he has been playing for a while he will start to get tired. Take him to his safe area, show him his bed and encourage him to climb in- give lots of praise when he does. He may like his bed so much that he settles down to sleep- great! If not, give him something to help him settle down. This could be a food filled toy or you could scatter some kibble around the area for him to sniff out. Shut the gate and move away, but stay within sight and earshot so that he doesn't become anxious. Hopefully, once he has finished his snack he will go to sleep and you can leave him alone, but be ready to let him out again when he wakes up. If he does not want to sleep that is fine- he has had a positive experience being left alone in his safe area. Some puppies will sleep in their safe area overnight without so much as a whine, but most would find this quite scary- especially on their first night in a new home. Puppies left to cry overnight are at risk of developing separation anxiety. Instead, have a small crate with a comfy bed set up in your bedroom. He will settle better if he knows you are nearby. If you don't want your puppy to sleep in your bedroom long term, very gradually move the crate further from you each night until it is in your puppy’s safe area downstairs. Over the coming weeks, continue to put your puppy in his safe area for nap time during the day. Start to put him in at other times to accustom him to being separated from you. Always give him treats when he is left alone- preferably a food filled toy that takes a while to finish. If he is not asleep, only shut him in for very short periods to begin with. If there are no signs of anxiety, gradually increase the amount of time he is left in his safe area. Once your puppy is reliably calm and settled when you leave him for short periods, progress to leaving him alone when you take short trips out. This is best done when he has had plenty of exercise and is tired. Over time, increase the amount of time your puppy is left alone. If you have a radio or television on when you are at home, leave it on for your puppy when you go out. You may want to consider a pet monitoring camera to keep an eye on him. Remember- dogs are social animals and being left alone for more than a few hours is not great for their welfare, so you might want to consider doggy day care or a dog walker if you need to leave your dog alone for long periods on a regular basis.
