I am an appliance and satellite engineer now based in Raunds, Northamptonshire having moved down from South West Scotland to be with my partner. My business started originally in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 2006 where I mainly worked for Age Concern and Anchor Housing repairing appliances and carrying out Electrical Safety Testing and risk assessments (PAT testing) across the North East of England. I was on the Newcastle and Northumberland Trade Register in recognition of the quality of my workmanship and was also the preferred supplier for a number of hotels and businesses in the area. LOCAL MEMORIES: By Penny Young Another Trip to Guernsey A free week appeared in my diary two weeks ahead and I thought it might be worth my while getting back into the Guernsey archives. Flight, hotel and most importantly an appointment with the Guernsey historian booked. The day duly arrived, and I was back in the Priaulx Library, which is not actually a lending library, but the Guernsey archives. Picking up where I had left off on my previous visit, we quickly got to discussing my three times Gt Grandmother. It transpired that she had died in Candie House, now the Priaulx Library (where I was actually standing); the building having later been renamed, after being gifted to the States of Guernsey by the Priaulx family. This was only the first of many golden (but sad) moments during this memorable day. We then turned to my two times Gt Grandmother. Her husband, Nicholas Kendall, my two times Gt Grandfather, had died aged 58 in 1883 – only five years after his father – another Nicholas! His wife, the grandly named Dora de Havilland Kendall, nee Priaulx had remarried in 1894 to a man named Thomas John Provis. I had long wondered why I could not find a death certificate for Dora, especially given that I knew the date she died. I had found an obituary placed in the Leeds Mercury, announcing her death in Mentone on 13th January 1904. Despite applying for a death certificate under different combinations of her name – Dora de Havilland, Dora de Havilland Kendall, Dora Provis etc etc the General Register Office had been unable to track down a record of her death. This was further complicated by the fact that Dora was less than truthful about her true age! In the 1901 census, she and her husband are staying at the Hotel Victoria in the Strand. He is engaged as a Justice of the Peace, with Private Means and gives his age as 64. Dora’s age is recorded as 54. She was born in 1831 and is, in fact, 70 years old – six years older than her husband, not 10 years younger – a difference in real age of 16 years – I wish I could get away with that! So, with these discrepancies in age and multiple combinations of name, finding a death certificate had proved impossible. You might remember that on my previous visit to Guernsey, a chap sitting at a desk, doing his own family history research, had been listening to my conversation with the historian and had blurted out that, ‘If you were a dog, I think you would be Champion of Crufts’ – such was my illustrious ancestry! Well, here he was here again, listening to me explain that my 2 x Gt Grandmother had died at Mentone, but I couldn’t find a death certificate. He piped up – “That might be because Mentone is in France”. He quickly began tapping away on his keyboard and minutes later he announced – “Here she is, I’ve found her”! Sure enough, Dora and her husband Thomas Provis had been staying at the Hotel d’Orient in Mentone, which is in the Arrondissement of Nice. The certificate is obviously all in French, but I was able to pick out a few facts – age 60 – (she was 73!) and she died at 5pm on 13th January 1904 – but no cause of death. Susan, the historian, was similarly tip-tapping away on her keyboard looking at a French newspaper archive. She was able to tell me that back then, when ‘well to do’ people arrived at a hotel, this was reported in the local newspaper. There was no social media in those days and wealthy people liked mixing with other wealthy people and would scan the newspapers to see who else was in town! This article was particularly poignant, as the newspaper recording the 16

Provis’ arrival at the hotel was actually printed after Dora’s death. It would appear that they had probably only arrived at the hotel that day and at 5pm in the evening Dora died. Had they perhaps gone to the South of France for her health? If so, sadly they were too late. My second golden moment of the day and a mystery solved - all be it a sad one. Next we turned to the third Nicholas Kendall, son of Dora de Havilland Kendall. He had died aged 24 in Naples, Italy in 1888 (sadly predeceasing his mother). I had managed to get a copy of his death certificate from the British Consul, but it did not give any cause of death, just the place of death – the Hospital in Naples and the person reporting the death, my Gt Grandfather, Osmond Lennox Kendall, his younger brother. I had always had my suspicions about Osmond. He really was a bad character – inheriting the family estate and fortunes on the death of his brother and then losing everything within 10 years, (gambling and speculating), going on to live a somewhat disparate life thereafter and dying alone in the workhouse in 1916. I had convinced myself that Osmond (the Spare!) had a part in his brother’s untimely death. I was never going to be able to prove it one way or the other and it troubled me. Susan, the archivist, then produced an alumni book of Elizabeth College – the public boys’ school on the island.

Western Division Royal Artillery. Lieutenant 1882 Died at Naples 1888 of consumption. Now I felt very bad. Nicholas, like his mother 16 years later, had gone to warmer climes for his health, accompanied by his brother. No scandal, just a fit young man lost to this dreadful disease, consumption, which would not stop taking lives until the invention of antibiotics. My third golden moment and another very sad one. Finally, we turned to Charles William Kendall (he of Lucy Kirkham fame). The library had one room devoted to military history and the shelves on one long wall contained the Army and Navy lists, almost literally going back to the year dot! I had learned that, following the scandal of the ‘Breach of Promise Case’, Charles’ father decided to get his son into the army and out of harm’s way. Army List 1849 – here he is Charles William Kendall – Cornet (a rank) - joined 5th May 1848 - 15th Kings Hussars one year’s service on full pay, serving at Bangalore, Madras, India. Army List 1850 – ditto – 2 years’ service, well done Charles – you are doing well here! Army List 1851 – no Charles William Kendall. An addendum at the back of the volume. In 1851 Charles had sold his commission, oh dear! Sixteen years later Charles would die, totally destitute (aged 39), of chronic disease of the liver, in a wooden shack of a hotel in Auckland, New Zealand. My next task - to try and trace what had happened to him in the intervening years. An amazing day at the archives. Four brick walls toppled and at times it felt as though these ancestors were willing me to keep going and unearth their stories.

Sometimes December can’t come quickly enough (I’m looking at you, university students) and sometimes it’s the kind of year when you’re just not sure you can get yourself organised in time for it. As I write this, it’s mid-November and I’ve just about finished all my Christmas shopping, although I still have to collect it as I’ve gone for “click and collect” this year (apologies for the humble brag, it’s a rarity). Present shopping is the most exciting part of Christmas for many of us, especially the creative-minded! I love to imagine people’s faces lighting up or creasing into hysterics as they reveal whichever treats they’d forgotten they’d asked for, or better yet, absolutely weren’t expecting! This is the first Christmas I’ll be spending in my new house and it’s promising to be a challenging one. But imagining the Christmas tree up and decorated on the first weekend of December with all eco-friendly presents underneath, wrapped, ready to go…while it’s uncharacteristically organised for me, it’s also allowing for some forward planning. Not just an “Arrivederci” to 2023, but a resounding “Welcome” to plans that have for too long stagnated on the backburner when they should have been burning bright long before now, for whatever reason. Priorities that should have been high on the list can go askew and lose their potency. I’m a pro at writing to-do lists. Actually making my way through them? …Oh, look, there’s that book I’ve been wanting to read on sale on Kindle! Click! Purchased. Forward-planning used to scare me. Forward plan for what? But having ticked off two relatively sizeable life hurdles and not feeling too overwhelmed in the process, starting a new year with a project already started is feeling much more achievable. Time-management itself feels more achievable. The laptop beckons and the coffee mug is full. The clock ticks away but it feels less like the daunting Christmas day tick-list and more like a discreet cheerleader instead. Gardening and Outdoor Section: p.22-23 Lee’s Gardening Corner Most people would think that December is a quiet month in the garden, but there are still things to do, and plenty of plants that provide flowers, colour and scent. Although we may get snow or frost and then you can sit inside and plan for next year! If you have any bare ground either in the veg garden or in a border, and it's not frozen, it can be dug over or just forked, whatever is required to tidy it up, and add some organic matter (like leaf compost or manure). Clear away plants and debris that might cause others to rot, or hide slugs and snails. Rake up leaves and put them either in a compost bin, or a black bag with a few holes for air and this time next year it will be great compost. Try not to walk on lawns, there will be lots of worm casts around which do make a mess, and if it's frozen constant walking could kill the grass. If we do have snow and it’s lying on evergreen branches it might be a good idea to knock it off so that the weight doesn’t cause any branches to break. Trees and shrubs can still be moved if the soil is workable. Pruning can be done to tidy up hedges and shrubs. There should still be vegetables to harvest: parsnips, cabbages and Brussels sprouts are just a few, if you have a greenhouse then troughs of carrots can still be on the go, and sow a new batch for early carrots next year. Broad beans can also be sown now to have an early crop. Fruit trees and bushes can also be planted. Keep a check on any plants stored in the greenhouse or any other frost free place, don't water too much and make sure pots are going to be ok if we have lots of frosts. Some plants to enjoy over the winter are Sarcococca, Hellebores, Hollies and Viburnum x bodnantense, and there are a number of winter flowering clematis. If you have made winter pots and baskets keep them dead headed and check for any rotting. Evergreen foliage and flowers can be cut to make displays for Christmas too. Lee Munday 22

Great Staughton and its People How a Huntingdonshire Village made its Mark on England’s History By Anthony Withers Last month I promised a few words on the writing of the book – how long did it take? Having assembled most of the information (there were additions and deletions in the final version), I set about the actual writing which took about five years including numerous rewrites and amends. My one major regret was having to cut out about 20,000 words. The book was too long! Reluctantly, I set about removing numerous chapters all describing the lives of ordinary Staughton people over the centuries, using documents like the Cambridge Gaol Deliveries of 1327 – 1332, the Protestation Returns of 1641 and trade directories like Kelly’s, covering the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These ordinary mortals rarely get a mention and their lives were in stark contrast to the wealthy and powerful described in the book. Material for another book perhaps? Sales are going well, helped by these articles in the Bystander and by a generous spread in the Hunts Post. I have been very pleased by the many kind comments both from local residents and from people now living away from Staughton but who have bought the book to renew their acquaintance with the village. One happy result has been the number of emails I have received asking for more details about particular chapters – especially concerning John Howey and his Staughton Manor Railway. Darkness Falling by Patrick MacDonald I’d read a number of novels about the Irish famine and as entertaining as they were none of them really dealt with the politics of the period and, in particular, the role of the British Government in managing it. I wanted to put this right. Both my parents are Irish. Mum grew up on a farm in Sligo and her ancestors would, therefore, undoubtedly have gone through the famine. Dad was from Enniscorthy in Wexford and again it’s difficult to believe his ancestors were also not touched by it. I was also fascinated by it as a period of history. The trick, of course, was to write a novel about a harrowing period of history which also covered the politics of the time but was still a sufficiently gripping read. Hopefully, I pulled it off (the blurb is as below) and if anyone is interested you can find the novel on Amazon. From 1845-1847 the British government reshaped Irish society, with disastrous results. Ultimately, a million lives would be destroyed, and another million people would flee. These are two stories of those lives. A woman cursed by a priest stands alone on a clifftop trying to summon up the courage to jump. Her brother stands accused of murder and rebellion against the state. Accompanied by a troop of soldiers, a landlord destroys the homes of his tenants leaving them to die on the hillsides.

The Magic of Christmas Janice sat in her lounge, with a glass of wine. A small Christmas tree lit up the corner of the room. It was Christmas Eve – a very emotive time of the year. A couple of Janice’s friends had asked her to go with them to Midnight Mass, but Janice had just not felt up to it. Instead, she was sitting alone with her glass of wine, watching the clock and waiting for time to tip over into Christmas Day. Janice was still trying to come to terms with the fact her daughter would not be with her for Christmas. Her daughter, Ruth, had moved to Australia nineteen years ago. They had been close, and Janice missed her dreadfully. In the first ten years of Ruth leaving, Janice had visited her a couple of times in Australia, and had loved every minute, but she no longer felt able to make the long flight. Ruth flew home every year for Christmas, and would stay for a couple of months, so life for both of them had settled into some sort of pattern. However, Janice had not seen her daughter for three Christmases. For two Christmases, Ruth had not been able to fly because of Covid regulations, and last Christmas Ruth had been very unwell. So, Janice had never been in any doubt that Ruth would be with her this Christmas. Her disappointment and sadness had been immense when Ruth announced she couldn’t come home, saying she had so many things she had to do and sort. ‘We’ll have a lovely long chat on Christmas Day, though.’ Ruth had promised. ‘Which is no substitution at all for you being with me’, Janice had thought, while trying her best to understand and accept. Janice glanced at the clock again. It was just after midnight. The magic of Christmas Day had started, and in just 9 hours she would at least be talking to her daughter on a Skype call. Janice began her bedtime routine, putting on the dishwasher and turning out all the lights. Suddenly, loud and clear, her doorbell rang. Janice froze. It was very late for someone to be calling. Very cautiously she opened the door just a crack. For a moment she thought she had to be dreaming – for there stood Ruth! Janice couldn’t speak, but tears of joy ran freely down her face. ‘You came!’ Janice said when she could finally speak, hugging her daughter as if she would never let her go. ‘Yes, I have come, mum, and I am not going back,’ Ruth replied. ‘The things I said I had to do and sort were all to do with my move back home.’ Janice was totally overwhelmed. She couldn’t believe that, in an instant, her world had been turned upside down in the most wonderful and unexpected way. Christmas really had worked its magic. I’m Dreaming of…. Paul Kinally of Peter Lane & Partners give some seasonal advice on preparing property for the market. I’m sure that plenty of moving decisions will be made this December, which brings us to the question of how to present a home to buyers during the last month of the year. In the USA, staging homes for sale is big business. In the UK, however, we tend not to replace kitchens and bathrooms or get in the decorators just to make our homes more saleable or even more valuable although perhaps we should. As any good estate agent will tell you, making your home fit for buyers does mean keeping things clean, neat, tidy and uncluttered. None of which work very well with festoons of paper chains, sprigs of holly, strands of glitter, balls of mistletoe, flashing coloured lights and Christmas trees shedding pine needles everywhere. Now I’m not saying humbug to Christmas, but restraint is the name of the game. A real fire, lit and crackling, with stockings at the ready is a nice touch. So too is a tastefully decorated tree in scale with the room - with any dropped needles regularly removed. The picture that you want to paint is how Christmas next year could look to your potential buyer. Christmas, whether one celebrates it or not, is a family time and you want to ensure that you show how well your home suits a family in this season of goodwill. The 1st Kimbolton Brownies are a fun group of girls ages 7-9 who are learning about reducing food & other waste, and conserving water usage. They recently learned about the importance of protecting the environment and how they can do their part to reduce their impact. The Brownies learned about the different types of waste that we produce and how to reduce each type. They also learned about the importance of composting food scraps and recycling recyclable materials. To put what they learned into practice, the Brownies showed off their creativity by making monsters and fashion outfits out of recycled materials such as cardboard, plastic bottles and egg cartons. As well as making a difference by helping to protect the environment, the Brownies were excited to display their creative talent at a ‘trash fashion show.’ The Brownies are also learning about other important topics such as healthy eating, staying active, and being kind to others. The Brownies are a great example of how young people can make a difference in the world. Girlguiding helps all girls know they can do anything. I’d like to challenge you with a competition this month. It’s something I’m involved with running alongside a friend of mine. This will be the fifth year for our Roses Mini Saga Competition. It’s also not too arduous as you only need to come up with 50 words to enter. Which is the exact number of words I’ve just used up to the last full stop! What is a Mini Saga? A mini saga is a fun way to tell a story in 50 words exactly, with a title of no more than 5 words. It should have a beginning, a middle and an end, and some period of time should pass through the story. It should have gravity. That’s to say, it should make a point which has some drama or psychological truth. It must aim, in fact, to be a saga in miniature. Here’s one from me as an example:

I finished last month’s piece saying I’d write more this month on the flash fiction workshop I’d presented at. I haven’t, but will next month, as this competition is a type of flash fiction and I wanted to give you as much notice of it as possible. It’s not easy to write (I find coming up with an idea the trickiest bit!) but if you like to set yourself a challenge you might like to give it a go. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A VICAR -----NICKI BLAND, VICAR of GREAT STAUGHTON----On Sundays, I wake up at 5.50 a.m. and eventually get off on my morning walk with my noisy but lovely dog, Bella. After which, at about 7.15, I have breakfast and head off to St. Andrew’s Great Staughton for ‘BCP Communion’ at 8 o'clock, this service is only on the first Sunday of the month, but despite the hour quite well attended. I have varying commitments on Sundays to take services at All Saints, Little Staughton, St. Andrew’s Great Staughton and St. Nicolas’s Hail Weston; Glenn and Maggie ( L.L.Ms ) variously take services at these churches and generally support me and the work of the church in the three parishes; I sometimes must remind myself that only God is Omnipresent, Omniscient and Omnipotent! All my churches have very hardworking Church Wardens, teams of cleaners, flower arrangers, coffee makers and cake providers, bell ringers not to mention organists and choirs. After my last service of the morning, St. Andrew’s Great Staughton, the congregation have tea, coffee and cakes and once I’ve spoken with everyone I need to and those who need to speak to me, it’s lunchtime! For lunch, usually two friends may come to me but we take turns in cooking and of course occasionally my son and his family will be with me: Dominic, his wife Eni and their children, Edward, 9, Alfie, 5 and Cecilia 4 named after St. Cecilia the patron saint of music. Dominic is a Lay Clerk at St. George’s chapel, Windsor castle. I am so delighted for Dominic who in addition is St George’s administrator for St George’s chapel. He was hugely privileged to be chosen to sing the tenor solo at the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. He also is part the Queen’s Six which is a performing group of singers, they travel the world, he and his family have a ‘Grace and Favour’ house within the precincts of Windsor Castle. On some Sunday mornings from 6.30 to 7 you can hear me giving a kind of ‘sermonised’ talk with prayers, a sort of mini service. Much to everyone’s amusement, I begin with my call sign: ‘Hello you early Risers’ THIS programme has around 1,000 listeners. You’d be very welcome to join me or other church leaders and over a thousand other listeners on Black Cat Radio, every Sunday morning, wave band 102.5 FM. My week is extremely busy too, various meetings, preparations of meetings, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms and not only for my 3 parishes but also in my role as Rural Dean. Being Rural Dean involves care of other churches and their leaders and of course this has its own structure, involving meetings with my fellow Rural Deans and the local clergy. As part of my role, I take morning assemblies at Great Staughton and sometimes at Keysoe and at Cross Hall, Eaton Socon. Other weekday commitments include, Bible Study afternoons, Morning and evening prayer on zoom, and meditation which is led by Liz Edmunds (Liz used to live in the Old Vicarage but now lives in Suffolk). I also attend the coffee mornings in the Village Hall Great Staughton, the ‘Men’s Breakfasts’, Dog walkers’ coffee drop in, Bible Study groups and Parochial Church 48

Council Meetings. People often want to visit me for a variety of reasons, and I also make many home visits to see people who are unwell or are suffering from the difficulties of life: Church of England Clergy can take confessions, but this is a very rare event. I attend the ‘mothers and toddlers’ group on Friday Mornings at St. Andrew’s, this is very popular amongst mothers, Grandparents ,carers and their children, most of those who attend are not regular church goers, but have an attachment to the church and support us in many ways, this is a most important part of the work of the church in rural areas. Monday nights are Crib Nights at the White Hart, I’m in the team! This I very much enjoy as it gives me a break from the, pretty much, constant flow of church and related work. I first thought of being a Vicar when I was 12 years old, but my initial calling was to become a teacher and my first post was at a school in Somerton, Somerset . I had been born in Kent but when I was 6 my parents, who were both teachers, moved to Ilminster in Somerset. I met my husband, John Bland, at Christchurch Canterbury, he had trained as an accountant, left that and gone to Bible college but his great love was being an organist and teacher. We married when I was 23 and moved around the country in various posts, sometimes living apart from John due to teaching posts in different places. When I was only 24 years old, I was running a boarding house at Huyton College, Liverpool. I had my first child, Pippi when I was 27, Pippi was severely disabled and life was at times difficult but very rewarding. I had my son Dominic when I moved to Chieveley near Newbury and taught with my husband at Prior’s Court School as class 6 teacher and head of Drama. Tragically John passed away a few years ago after a dreadful illness. After a time at Kingswood School in Bath , I left to take the job at Kimbolton School as School Chaplain but also taught maths and religious studies, life was very hectic! I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Kimbolton School and moved to Great Staughton six and a half years ago where I am also very happy, supposedly on a point 6 contract but it’s what I love. Despite losing my daughter and husband, I feel I’ve been blessed to be living such a wonderful and fulfilling life, I have wonderful people around me and the support I received when my husband John passed away was and still is truly amazing. Favourites: Film: ‘Forrest Gump’. Book: ‘The prayer for Owen Meaney’. Food: Shellfish. Music: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Cold Play. I always begin and end the day with prayers for family and friends, which includes my various parishioners. I owe everything to my late husband, John Bland. ‘Tis the season to be jolly! I am often asked what wine to have with the Christmas meal. The sheer number of flavours make this a tough question to answer, but for me, it is white Burgundy; I have always found it works so well with turkey, which, after all, is the star of the show! It will probably be a Santenay from Antoine Olivier, or if I am, feeling particularly indulgent a Mersault-Blagny 1er Cru, Chateau Blagny from Louis Latour. Of course, I will have to find out who is coming to lunch as in the words of someone who recently ran a tasting in the shop, “that is the kind of wine you open when your guests have gone!”. That said, the choice is a personal one; after all, it is Christmas and if you can’t enjoy yourself then when can you? So, my recommendation is drink what you enjoy! It is not too often that you get a genuine chance to indulge, so whether it is Bordeaux (Perhaps an Initial de Desmirail 2013 Margaux from Chateau Desmirail £30) or Burgundy (the Cotes de Nuits from Phillipe Livera 2020 would work well £36.50), treat yourself! These wines do have a more premium price tag attached to them, but good wine does not always have to be expensive. For Bordeaux blend lovers, the Gabrielskloof 2020 Blend £14.50 would be more than adequate, or you could decide that a Rioja Reserva is the way forward and CVNE’s Asua 2013 £16.50 could be a good choice. Indeed, both the New and Old Worlds offer up plenty of more premium alternatives as well. One of the picks of the last year in the shop has been Warwick Estate’s 2013 Trilogy £31, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot from South Africa, which would work well as a Bordeaux alternative. Staying in that part of the world, Newton Johnson’s Family Vineyards Pinot Noir £28 offers up a good alternative to Burgundy, as does Crystallum’s Peter Max. For white Burgundy substitutes, McHenry Hohnan’s Laterite Hills Chardonnay, £26, offers plenty of value, as do their single vineyard wines; perhaps this is the biggest problem here – too much choice! Of course, Christmas is not just about wines to go with Turkey. Champagne, or an equivalent, often features people’s drinks list and whilst there are several Champagne options available, the Roger Goulart Reserve Cava at a Christmas Special £13 a bottle represents truly great value. The cheese board is also not to be forgotten and whilst a variety of cheeses on your board present pairing problems, why not try something a little different this year? Dandelion Vineyards in Australia produce a fortified Pedro Ximenez £15.50 which is excellent and goes well with a variety of cheese, or if it is Tawny Port you are after, Quinta de la Rosa’s 20yo Tawny £32 is also excellent, or Malamado’s fortified Malbec £16.50 is a great alternative to port.
