FROM TOY TO DESIGN ICON bySommer & Goodluck Troll I 2014 indledte bySommer et samarbejde med Dam familien. bySommer præsenterede en ide om at skabe Lykketrolden i et nyt keramisk materiale - helt i Thomas Dams ånd. Missionen er at gøre Thomas Dams verdenskendte legetøjstrold til et design-ikon indenfor boliginteriør.

In 2014, bySommer ApS began a cooperation with Dam Things. bySommer presented the idea of re-designing the Goodluck Troll in a ceramic material, but still maintaining the characteristics of the Goodluck Troll. The mission is to turn Thomas Dam´s world-famous toy into a design icon that fits in every modern home.

Juletrolde – Familien Grandam Klassiske lykketrolde – jubilæum 2021 Anlednings lykketrolde – ”Our Heroes”

Juletroldene med det karakteristiske troldehår tryllet om til charmerende julerøde nissehuer udvides nu med 4 nye familie medlemmer og flere tilbehørs elementer.

I efteråret 2021 fejrer vi et 60 års jubilæum med et helt særligt design til ære for Thomas Dam, og samarbejder med NBCUniversal der ejer ophavsretten til Lykketrolden - for at skabe en spændende markedsføring der potentielt skal rulles ud i over 100 lande verden over.

Endnu en gang rejser Lykketrolden ud i verden som den har gjort siden 1960’erne. Lykketrolden deltog på New Yorks World Fair i 1964.

Vi glæder os som virksomhed til at deltage med Lykketrolden i Verdensudstillingen i Dubai World Expo.

• Christmas Trolls - The Pinedam Family • Classic Goodluck trolls - anniversary 2021 • Occasional Trolls - ”Our Heroes” The family of the Christmas trolls with the characteristic troll hair is enchanted into a Christmas-red pixie cap are now expanded with 4 new family members and several accessory elements.

In the autumn of 2021, we will celebrate a 60th anniversary with a very special design in honor of Thomas Dam, and collaborate with NBCUniversal, the license holder of the Goodluck Trolls - to create an exciting marketing that will potentially be rolled out in over 100 countries worldwide.

Once again, the Goodluck Troll travels the world as it has done since the 1960’s. The Goodluck troll participated in the New York World Fair in 1964.

As a company, we look forward to participating with the Goodluck Troll at the World Exhibition at the Dubai World Expo.

Thomas Dam Thomas Dam fik ideen til at udføre Lykketrolden i gummi under en rejse til USA i 1960'erne. Siden den produktion startede er der udviklet mange spændende udgaver af Gjøl trolden i gummi og iklædt tøj.

1964 - THE GOODLUCK TROLL IS FAMOUS!

Thomas Dam started producing sculptures in PVC stuffed with hay and wood wool.

Thomas explained that he wanted to create a figure that, although it was far from beautiful, had the ability to make people smile and feel good. The troll was intented to embrace and hug the world, with its arms being stretched in the “Give me a hug position”.

The Goodluck Troll itself received a tremendous amount of attention in this period, and even visited President John F. Kennedy in the White House. The famous female pilot Betty Miller, who received a medal for her achievement of single handed flying a small aircraft across the Pacific Ocean, brought a Goodluck Troll with her on the journey.

In April the Life Magazine used a full, colored page to cover the US “mysterious” Troll invasion. Many years later the New York Times dedicated the entire frontpage of the Art & Culture section to the story of the Goodluck Troll and its father Thomas Dam.

1961 - TOY OF THE YEAR

1989 - THOMAS DAM DIES OF CANCER

Thomas Dam, known to many Troll collectors as Father of Trolls, was raised in a small village named Gjøl in Northern Denmark. His dad was a poor fisherman and Thomas was expected to follow in his father’s footsteps as a fisherman too, but Thomas was not big and strong, and didn’t find fishing very appealing.

The US Toy Industry Association (TIA) named the Goodluck Troll “Toy of the Year”. In 1964 the troll was used as a mascot on the entrance pass for the World Exhibition in New York.

Thomas Dam died of cancer in 1989 and did not live to experience the gigantic return of the Goodluck Troll in the early 90’s.

During 2nd World War it was very hard to find work in Denmark. His wife Betty suggested to him he tried to sell some of the many wood carvings he kept producing, and that’s basically how the business was started.

Much to his own surprise, he soon found a trading partner who agreed to buy everything Thomas was able to produce - Thomas and his family had now found a way to survive the difficult times during the war.

By the end of the war in 1945 Thomas’ works has been sold all over Denmark and a number of other countries, Including the USA.

Thomas Dam A lot of water has flown through the Limfjord since the fisherman’s son and creator of the Goodluck Trolls, Thomas Dam, made his first Troll - in his own image some have said - out of a piece of wood. Thomas Dam’s family was very poor and the things that Thomas Dam carved in wood were the family’s only income. At that time nobody knew that the Goodluck Trolls would be worldfamous in the coming years!

Thomas Dam got the idea to create the Goodluck Troll in rubber, when he visited the US in the 1960´s. Since that production began, several more designs of the Goodluck Troll were created in rubber and dressed in clothes.

2011 - DREAMWORKS BUYS THE RIGHTS FOR THE GOODLUCK TROLL Thomas dreamt about turning the story of his trolls into a movie, but when he lost the Copyright in 1965 this dream seemed unreal.

However, after his company Dam Things spent almost 10 years in different courts fighting to get the once lost Copyright back, they succeeded, and the Goodluck Troll was ready to conquer the world once again. In 2010 Dam Things and its advisors approached a number of Hollywood Studios and realized the large interest in the story about the Goodluck Troll. In 2011 Dam Things announced the cooperation with DreamWorks Animation to produce a film about the life of the trolls.

2020 - WORLD TOUR

The movie Trolls produced by Dreamworks in 2016, was dedicated to Thomas Dam, and is about the Goodluck troll that he created.

The film was directed by Mike Mitchell, staring superstars like Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake. The movie grossed $344 million worldwide, and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for ”Can’t Stop the Feeling!”

Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake reappears in their roles in Trolls 2 with release date in 2020.

I’M BACK! 2015 - FROM TOY TO DESIGN ICON

2017 - A TOUCH OF ROYALTY

In 2015 Dam Things started to cooperate with bySommer to turn the classic trolls into a design icon. Trolls fans are now able to have a fashionable memory of their childhood as a design object in their house. These new trolls were first seen in Denmark in 2015, and have been very popular from day one. More than 500 stores in Denmark are selling the trolls, as well as more than 100 stores in Norway and Sweden.

At the Royal Danish Visit in Stockholm in 2017, Prince Daniel of Sweden, tells the Danish Crown Princess Mary that every Swedish child had a Goodluck Troll during their childhood.

2019 - BYSOMMER IN COLLABORATION WITH DAM THINGS AND DREAMWORKS bySommer makes an agreement with DreamWorks/Universal, which grants bySommer the privilege to sell our modern version of Goodluck Trolls in 111 new countries. LYKKETROLDEN FEJRER STORT JUBILÆUM I 2021 VI FEJRER HISTORIEN OM EN STOR SUCCES - EN PRESTIGEFULD PRIS BLEV TILDELT LYKKETROLDEN I 1961 Thomas Dam fandt i slutningen af halvtredserne en metode til at fremstille den allerede populære trold fra Gjøl i et plastmateriale, som gjorde det muligt at producere mange flere trolde. Dette var stærkt påkrævet for at følge med den voldsomme efterspørgsel der var efter trolden fra Gjøl, både i Danmark, men også fra mange lande i Europa og senest en meget stor efterspørgsel fra USA. Thomas var ovenud lykkelig for den store succes, hans trolde havde, og følte virkelig, at de bragte Lykke til ham og familien. Derfor besluttede han, at de fremover officielt skulle hedde Lykketrolde og have den opgave at bringe lykke og held, til de nye familier troldene fandt rundt om i Verden. Altså når bare de nye ejere værdsatte deres trold og behandlede den godt. I mange år efter var alle de Originale Dam Lykketrolde udstyret med et LYKKETROLD emblem, der skulle minde deres nye ejere om, at deres lille nye ven var en lykkebringer.

Allerede i 1961 blev Thomas Dam’s LYKKETROLD i USA udråbt til at være årets legetøj, og Thomas Dam fik den prestigefyldte TOTY pris.

På den baggrund mener vi ikke, at det er for meget at fejre 60 års jubilæum for en af de helt store danske, eksport succeser.

I efteråret udgiver bySommer og NBCUniversal en video animation, der på eventyrligvis beskriver lykketrolden og Thomas Dams univers.

THE GOODLUCK TROLL CELEBRATES A BIG ANNIVERSARY IN 2021 WE CELEBRATE THE STORY OF A GREAT SUCCESS - A PRESTIGIUS PRIZE WAS AWARDED TO THE GOODLUCK TROLL IN 1961 In the late 50ties, Thomas Dam found a method to produce the already popular troll from Gjøl in a plastic material, which made it possible to produce many more trolls. This was strongly required in order to keep up with the tremendous demand for the troll from Gjøl, both in Denmark, but also from many countries in Europe and most recently a very large demand from the USA. Thomas was overjoyed at the great success his trolls had, and really felt that they were bringing good luck to him and the family.

Therefore, he decided that in future they should be officially named Goodluck Trolls and be commissioned with the task of bringing good luck and happiness to the new families the trolls found around the World. That is as long as the new owners valued their troll and treated it well. For many years after, all the Original Dam Goodluck Trolls were equipped with a GOODLUCK TROLL emblem to remind their new owners that their little new friend was a good luck charm.

As early as 1961, in the United States Thomas Dam’s GOODLUCK TROLL was proclaimed the toy of the year, and Thomas Dam received the prestigious TOTY award. Against this background, we do not think it is too much to celebrate the 60th anniversary of one of the great Danish, export successes.

This autumn, bySommer and NBCUniversal will release a video animation that in a magic way describes the Goodluck troll and Thomas Dam’s universe.

The Pinedam family of the Goodluck forest The Pinedam Family are Christmas trolls, who live in the Goodluck Forest somewhere in the Northern Hemis-phere. In the Goodluck Forest there is an inner warmth, even though it is always snowy.
