Byron College is dedicated to supporting its students, tutors and staff – everyone that’s part of the College community, and so as a small, regionally-based Community College, it’s able to offer something quite special in adult education. In Student Support, we have the privilege of getting to know our students through both the highs and lows inherent in any learning journey. There’s no doubt that societal resilience is currently being tested and mental health is being profoundly impacted. At times like this, students can find the going gets tougher. It can feel as if study goals are receding into the distance and a sense of overwhelm can set in. The College is there in these moments and Student Support works collaboratively by combining academic guidance with general support to offer a kind of ‘wrap around’ service that aims to help students keep their study goals in sight. We’re also able to guide students towards other external help providers in the community. Yet despite the current challenges and uncertainties about the future, it’s still an incredibly useful time to be studying. The social contact and routine of study can help be supportive of wellbeing. So too can fresh air, sunshine, art, exercise, gardening; the things that make us smile. I’m sure our Certificate course Permaculture and Horticulture students will tell you this too. Like all our Certificate students including Individual Support, Community Services and Massage, they’ve grown muscles not only of the garden digging kind, but also the muscles of inner tenacity and strength. As a Community College we think of public health and wellbeing as something communal. By committing to looking after each other in our small College community, by embracing kindness, inclusivity and diversity, by striving to see the best in each other, we hope that we’re looking after and enriching the larger community too. Student in Certificate III Permaculture 2020 I came to permaculture after being depressed and frustrated about fundamental human problems. I felt like I was constantly bombarded with bad news. I didn’t feel like I was making an impact, even with making music (I’ve been involved in music my entire adult life). As I went searching for sustainable solutions, permaculture kept coming up. When I found out there was a government funded course in my home town, it was almost like I didn’t have an option! I knew I needed to get my fingers into the earth.

From the first couple of weeks of the course, I was so empowered and inspired. I don’t want to make it sound like a divine experience but it was like I could see a light at the end of the tunnel. The course has shifted a whole lot in my life. I’ve walked away an entirely different person. I’m more solution-based and that’s a really good thing. I’ve become really interested in biology and am keen to back this up with some university knowledge. I think I’ll do a degree in science with a major in soil biology. Not this year though – I’ve got an album to finish first. In a way, this course has rebirthed my music as I feel it has more of a purpose now. I’ve taken on some gardening work and have my first permaculture consulting work – helping plan a garden and orchard. I’ve also just done my first supervision session with this year’s Permaculture students. I am very grateful to the college and the tutors for having faith in me, building the essence of community within the course and making these skills accessible to everyone.

GUITAR FOR BEGINNERS with Karl Farren

GUITAR 3 - BREAKING THROUGH with Karl Farren

If you’re one of the millions who bought a guitar, learned three chords (or less), got frustrated, and hasn’t picked up the guitar since, this class is for you! This is a fresh start, a chance to get over those ‘beginner’s blues’ and actually get to play stuff and enjoy it. So dust off your guitar, bring it along and join in. But be warned, you may well find you’ll acquire a lifelong addiction to playing your guitar. Additional materials $10. 6 Tue, 19 Oct - 23 Nov 7 - 9 pm Mullum Concession: $151 Full Fee: $168

In this course, we will be ‘breaking through’ and bridging the gap from confident intermediate player to competent musician. If you’re bored with your guitar playing, this course is for you! This course is designed for the intermediate player who wants to advance. To benefit fully from this course you will need to be able to play confidently both open position and barre chords. Additional materials $10. 6 Thu, 21 Oct - 25 Nov | 7 - 9 pm Mullum Concession: $151 Full Fee: $168

This course will suit you if you are a reasonably confident beginner rather than a novice; can already play through some songs; or have already completed Karl’s Beginners course. What happens for a lot of us is we get to the stage of being able to play a few songs, but then get a bit stuck, and don’t know where to go next. What can easily happen then is that we get bored playing the same old things and not progressing. Karl has a bunch of cool things to show you that will enable you to break through that. Additional materials $10. 6 Wed, 20 Oct - 24 Nov 7 - 9 pm Mullum Concession: $151 Full Fee: $168

Elle Astrup, Foods That Love You Back Mentor program My journey to becoming an Agripreneur is personal, with Microgreens being a pivotal part of my mother’s recovery from Stage IV Lymph cancer. The concept of “food as medicine” is well known, but what isn’t known is the power of Microgreens. As of today, I grow three varieties of Microgreens in my Ag-Tech Farm; Red-Clover, Broccoli, and Sunflower, each with its own health benefits. My innovative start-up has established a world-first, fully enclosed vertical farm which enables us to grow sustainably and harvest exceptional produce every day of the year. My Microgreen punnets are compostable and everything we do is B-Corp standard and circular economy based. What inspired you to seek a mentor through Sourdough? I was looking for a sounding board and support in connecting with the local community. I filled out a simple online application – it was really easy – and a week later, I got an email proposing Amy Nicholls, who works in global coaching and has a background in the corporate world and sustainability.

She became my go-to person, someone to say: “Hey, what do you think of this?” Amy has been so influential that I often consider what her approach to a situation might be when making bigger decisions. As a result, I’m more confident at managing my business and I go for what I want – no matter how immense my vision might seem to others. I know that anything is possible until I decide it isn’t! What guidance from your mentor has stayed with you? Amy is very tuned into right and wrong and she has an amazing ability to bring clarity in decision making - BPO to every meeting, “best possible outcome” is to “go in” knowing what you want beforehand with a clear outcome in mind. She has also shown me the value of asking for help, something that can be difficult for me, I am usually the one helping others. Thank you, Elle, for sharing your mentor experience. Rhonda Keers

Student in Certificate III in Individual Support 2021 I’ve always wanted to be a nurse but, at home in Vanuatu, I didn’t finish high school. Since I came to Brunswick Heads in 2005, I’ve helped the hubby with the businesses and had two children who are now at primary school. Then, one day, after driving past the Byron Community College, I walked in and got the brochure. When I saw the Certificate III in Individual Support, I said “Bingo!” I didn’t start for two years because my husband had an accident and then because of coronavirus.

When I first started, my learning ability was not that great and there were words I didn’t understand. In Vanuatu we speak Pidgin and I learned some English at school but not much. The reality was different to what I was expecting. I thought I’d made a mistake. I told my teachers I was thinking of quitting and they were fantastic. They reminded me how much I wanted this and said to take it one day at a time. I held onto those needed words of advice. Over time I progressed and began to understand. I’ve completed 80 hours of experience at Coolamon Aged Care, and now I need to do 40 hours in disability. Once I’m finished, I’ll be recognised in this industry anywhere in Australia. One day, I’d like to go back home to help people in Vanuatu, until then, I will help people here. I wanted to do this for myself. The course has given me security. My son says: “I’m so proud of you” and my five-year old daughter loved that we were all going to school! My husband has helped by looking after the kids while I study. I’m crying good tears because it’s so beautiful. I say to anyone considering studying to keep going. Believe in yourself, there is a window of opportunity out there. I know every person has it in them. The College is amazing. It reached someone like me. I’m so thankful to my teachers, the staff and whoever started this College. I’m so happy.
