Forbes Best-In-State Wealth Advisors Methodology 2021
The Forbes ranking of Best-In-State Wealth Advisors, developed by SHOOK Research, is based on an algorithm of qualitative criteria, gained through telephone, virtual and in-person due diligence interviews, and quantitative data. Those advisors that are considered have a minimum of seven years experience, and the algorithm weights factors like revenue trends, assets under management, compliance records, industry experience and those that encompass best practices in their approach to working with clients. Portfolio performance is not a criteria due to varying client objectives and lack of audited data. Neither Forbes or SHOOK receive a fee in exchange for rankings. For the full methodology visit www.forbes.com/sites/rjshook/2021/02/11/forbes-best-in-state-wealth-advisors-methodology-2021.

This ranking was developed by SHOOK Research and is based on in-person and telephone due diligence meetings to evaluate each advisor qualitatively, a major component of a ranking algorithm that includes client retention, industry experience, review of compliance records, and firm nominations; as well as a quantitative review that includes assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. Rankings are based on the opinions of SHOOK Research, LLC and not indicative of future performance or representative of any one client’s experience. EDITOR
I
n September, 2019 just before Covid 19 interrupted our lives, I stepped in as the Editor of SB Magazine. For the following 20 months I had a wonderful time experiencing the ins and outs of editing Shreveport-Bossier’s premiere magazine. I’ve loved working with some of the people and I always knew we had a great team – from the creative staff to the sales team. I never appreciated the value of team work in producing our beautiful magazine. Byron and I couldn’t be more blessed.
We made it through the worst of the pandemic without any major glitches and only one illness (she’s doing great, by the way). We’ve delivered entertaining features and our monthly columns have continued to highlight our local community. Our goal is and will always be to focus on the people and businesses in our sister cities. This past January, I had the opportunity to write a feature on Private Schools and how they have managed to stay open throughout the pandemic. It was after one of these interviews that I was asked to give advice on how this particular school might succeed in expanding its Fine Arts program. As some of you may or may not know, I have been involved in music and drama in this area since I moved here nearly 45 years ago. You might say Theatre has been my passion for all my adult life. Just talking with this school about what they could do was exciting. When they asked me for suggestions on who might lead this endeavor – well, let’s just say Byron could sense my enthusiasm and suggested that I throw my name in the hat. So, beginning with summer camps in June, I will be the Fine Arts Director at Providence Classical Academy in Bossier City. PCA is an incredible school. From the moment I entered the building I felt a strong sense of community. I knew I belonged there. For those of you with children 4th grade through 12th, our first summer camp begins June 14th. Call Providence Classical Academy for more details. (How’s that for a shameless plug?) Oh, I’m not leaving SB Magazine. I’ll be writing a few of the columns each month and will always be right next to Byron as he continues to guide our team. Our new editor, Elizabeth Beard Deal was raised in Shreveport and has written for us a few times over the years. She brings a love for and commitment to the growth of Shreveport-Bossier. I am confident that Elizabeth will utilize her impressive skills to further grow our magazine while strengthening our mission in this community. Please welcome our new editor, Elizabeth Beard Deal!

MOTHER’S GUIDE TO STYLE
I
n honor of Mother’s Day, we are celebrating all things style and beauty for the busy mom on the go. Long gone are the days of the frumpy stay at home mom. Being a modern mother with style and flair is the norm. Between school, meetings and extracurricular activities for the kiddos, this can be quite trying. So here are some easy style and beauty tips to help your style stand out in the carpool line.
STYLING TIPS •
Add Accessories!! A pair of earrings, a necklace or a few cute bracelets can elevate even the simplest of outfits.
•
Go with heels. They are slimming, create the illusion of longer legs and add a little height.
•
Keep a Pair of Boots Handy. Put on a cute pair of boots and instantly add some edge to your look. The great thing about boots is that they can be worn with just about anything from dresses to jeans.
•
Pick Darker Denim. Even mom jeans can fake style when worn in a darker color. Darker denim not only looks more formal and pulled together, but it also is more slimming and flattering to the body.
STYLING TIPS FOR MOMS TO BE •
Buy regular tops but in a looser style to stay fashionable and on trend.
•
Keep an oversized blazer handy to wear open over any thing when you need to look more formal and pulled together.
•
V neck shirts/button tops elongate the body making you look less round.
•
A loose, flowing slip dress is a “go to” for occasions when you need to be a little more dressed up. It is comfortable and easy to wear while looking very chic.

As a mom or mom-to-be, you’ll be pouring so much into others, you can’t forget about yourself. • Try to keep a regular schedule of mani and pedis to keep yourself looking and feeling beautiful. (Not to mention it is an altogether relaxing experience.) •
Make sure to keep up with consistent hair appointments with your favorite stylist.
•
Try a spray tan from time to time to keep a healthy sun kissed glow. Treat yourself to some
•
Botox every few months to keep yourself looking refreshed and youthful.
Now that you will need to always have an arsenal of kid supplies with you, why not make it stylish? • Instead of the traditional diaper bag, turn a fabulous designer oversized tote into one. • Don’t pick just any car seat. Find one that is not only safe but matches the interior of your car. • Try not to grab just any stroller off the store shelf. Find one in a bold color or print to stand out. • As they get older, instead of sticking snacks or games in your purse, try to find a cute designer backpack as you’re “on the go kid” care bag.
Modern mothers are investing in their personal style, and going beyond to make their children just as stylish. • Mimic your personal style choices on your children. Choose clothing that is current and fashionable. • When getting their hair cut, choose a distinctive and on trend hair style for them to wear. • Allow little girls to accessorize. Not only does it elevate their outfits, but it is too cute and makes them feel like big girls. • Be sure to stay on season with the style choices you make for them, just as you would yourself.
EASY HAIR STYLES FOR ON THE GO
• •
•
•
Try the effortless sleek high ponytail. Light and easy to achieve. It gives you a youthful young sporty look. Give the middle part low pony a try. It’s still just a ponytail but gives you a much more pulled together personal appearance. To sass things up, try sweeping your hair back in an embellished head band. This adds a little something extra to any outfit but still extremely easy to achieve. Give a little texture to your hairstyle with a simple side braid.

MAKE UP TIPS FOR THE BUSY MOM
•
Blush is your best friend. Be sure to pick a peachy youthful shade. Place higher on your check bone two finger width away from your nose.
•
If there is no time for anything else, at least play up your eyes with mascara. It frames your eye line and softens your appearance.
•
Tinted brow gels. If your eyes are the window to the soul, you better have good window dressings around them. Try a tinted brow get to add subtle definition. This will add framing to your eyes and face.
•
Being a mother can be quite exhausting. Be sure to keep a brightening concealer handy to wake up those tired eyes.

The maître d’ checks you in, while you scan the walls, taking in the memories of the Palmisano family and the hundreds of celebrities that have stood where you’re standing. I’ve been here both as a guest and an entertainer many times and I see something new hanging on the walls each time I’m there. (I suspect Ernest rehangs the photographs just for fun.) What makes this restaurant so special, you may wonder? Is it the old-world charm? food, and the most authentic Italian cuisine? Or is it the formally trained wait staff ready to share the exquisite “Chef Features” and their knowledgeable pairing of wines that will complete your dining experience? Ernest’s Orleans Restaurant is the cultural culinary landmark of the Shreveport area. Their Marinated Crab Claws are world famous and no visit to this iconic restaurant is complete without them. But the claws are only one of the reasons Ernest’s is loved by so many. Within its dining rooms, folks have celebrated engagements, weddings, graduations, birthdays, promotions and any family event you can think of. It’s a special place to be when something special is happening in your life. Ernest’s has become a tradition for many Shreveport-Bossier families. Tradition is what Ernest’s Orleans Restaurant is all about. Family owned and operated, this restaurant’s influences stem from the late Chef Ernest Sr. who had deep roots in the city of New Orleans. These influences in addition to Chef Ernest Palmisano Jr.’s drive for excellence are apparent in every dining experience.
las’s best restaurant, Ernest’s name has been synonymous with fine foods and wines. Restaurateur of the year in 1994, recognition of his community involvement and celebrity Chef at the 9th Annual Gentleman’s Cookoff, Chef Ernest loves his city and it shows in every tantalizing dish he serves. Always giving his best, Chef Ernest personally prepares and inspects every dish leaving his kitchen. His personal touch, welcoming environment, and quality entertainment are evident every time guests walk through the door. Ernest Orleans Restaurant is synonymous with quality and is a cultural experience that shouldn’t be missed. That’s a promise that Chef Ernest and his loyal staff continue to make, meal after meal, party after party, celebration after celebration.
The restaurant business is something Ernest Palmisano Jr. has known most of his life. He grew up under his famous father’s tutelage turning food into masterful works of art. Ernest’s Orleans Restaurant continues to serve the freshest wild Louisiana seafood found in this city. Ernest believes that the easiest way to prepare delicious food is to start with the freshest catch, aged prime beef, and formula fed veal. The freshness and selectiveness of the ingredients are apparent in every succulent bite. Jokingly referred to as Dal-

BUYING A NEW HOME
THE HIDDEN COSTS
P
icture yourself sitting down to a desk for the first time and writing your name in what seems like a million spaces. This contract could make you the proud owner of a new home. You feel exhilarated, satisfied with yourself, relieved and maybe, to be honest, just a little scared. If everything works out, you’ve just signed yourself to what very well may be the biggest investment of your life. Suddenly, you feel nauseous. Little beads of sweat are forming on your brow. You’re a little weak in the knees. Are you ready for this? This is a big step you’re taking. Can you handle it?
Sure, you can! If you have done your homework and are fully aware of what to expect. First on your agenda will be a home inspection. When the seller accepts your offer, you will have to pay for a general home inspection. If your home isn’t a new construction this will probably include a termite, radon, lead paint, sewer and a foundation inspection. This adds up to several hundred dollars. It takes only a few hours and will save you from many sleepless nights. You’ll get an inspection report that might give you some negotiation room. You can always walk away from the offer after the inspection if you have a legitimate reason. Your mortgage lender may require that you get a professional land survey to confirm the boundary lines of the property. This is a pretty big expense – somewhere around $500 to $600 – but will save you from a future argument with neighbors if you decide to cut down a tree or build a fence.
14
MAY 2021
| SBMAG.NET
You’ll have to pony up with some earnest money. This is can be anywhere between 1% to 3% of the agreed upon purchase price and it shows that you “earnestly” wish to buy the property. You’ll get this money back either as part of your down payment or closing costs – more on that lateror if the deal falls through. The closing costs just mentioned are anywhere from two to five percent of the total loan value. During your negotiations you might ask the seller to cover this expense, especially if your inspection report comes back with issues. Closing costs include: • • • •
Home appraisal Title and attorney fees Property taxes Interest (prorated from
the date of closing to the first day of the next month)
You will probably be required to have your home owners insurance policy active before you close. This cost will, of course, depend on the home’s value and the contents of the home. Don’t forget moving costs and additional furniture and appliances you may need to purchase. Chances are your old refrigerator won’t fit in the new kitchen. Suddenly, you might have a kitchen bar set up that requires bar stools that you don’t have. If you’re coming from a rental situation, be prepared to buy a washer and dryer. That will set you back at least $1000.
Commonly covered issues include: • • • • • •
Air conditioning Kitchen appliances Washers and dryers Doorbells Furnace/heating Water heater
• • • • • •
Ductwork to code Garbage disposals Plumbing stoppages Ceiling fans Electrical systems Range and oven
Home warranties may or may not cover: • • • A home warranty plan might bring you extra peace of mind. This is a type of protection insurance that covers any malfunctions in your new home. If you are a new homeowner with little experience in home maintenance, a home warranty plan is a good investment. If something goes wrong, an appliance doesn’t work properly, the air conditioner freezes up – anything that the plan covers – you call the warranty company. They will then call a provider who will set up an appointment with you to come to your home and fix the problem. Depending on the contract coverage, if the appliance cannot be repaired, the home warranty company will pay to replace and install a new appliance. You will pay a small trade service fee - $75 to $100 as of this writing.
•
Outdoor sprinklers Faucet repairs Refrigerators, washers, and dryers, or garage door openers Spa or pools unless
• • • •
coverage is requested Permit fees Haul-aways Items that were broken before closing Exclusions noted
Another expense that is often overlooked in the excitement of buying a new home is all the gadgets you will need to keep your lawn and flowerbeds a source of personal pride. Grass has a way of growing right along with those obnoxious weeds. You’re going to need a lawnmower, an edger, a shovel, a rake, a trowel, lawn and leaf bags, gardening gloves and any other special tools you think will aid you in any of your landscape projects. You may even want to plant fresh flowers or make landscaping improvements. It all adds up. So, don’t be alarmed. Be armed and ready with the knowledge of these added expenses associated with home ownership.

Wherever you Roam,
Do it in an RV!
Freedom to go anywhere. An ability to be totally self-sufficient. The potential for nonstop adventure. And although there is a certain charm to the memories of loading up the family station wagon and heading out for a classic road trip, it’s safe to say that not all RVs are created equal!
F
or years, Frank Smith had fantasized about owning a recreational vehicle, also known as an RV. But he always found reasons not to get one. Then, when the coronavirus pandemic effectively grounded the tourism industry and crippled most means of travel, the 41-year-old father of two raised the question—why not buy one now? After discussing the idea with his wife, Smith did some research and settled on a travel trailer he could tow. He then spent hours-and-hours scrolling options online— first looking at new models and then at pre-owned ones. “Finally, after all of this back-and-forth, I just thought, ‘I’m going to do this, and I’m doing it now,’” said Smith. “It made sense because it’s pretty much the only way to take a vacation right now without giving up something I really love—to travel.”
16
MAY 2021
| SBMAG.NET
Ultimately, Smith ended up with a 27-foot Chaparral Lite model from Forest River. It has an onboard bathroom and shower, a bunk bed for the kids, and much, much more.
The Anatomy of the RV Surge
Smith isn’t the only person to join the ranks of RV owners during this pandemic. So, why the surge? As the nation grapples with all the restrictions associated with the coronavirus, the lowly RV has become the perfect solution for a socially distanced vacation. Across the country, RVs are selling as quickly as Charmin toilet paper—or quicker! Many dealers report wait lists. Dealers who are lucky enough to get RVs delivered to their lots often sell them within hours of arrival. Simply put, the industry can barely keep up with the demand. Perhaps the most notable aspect of the recent boom is how quickly it all happened. As a result of the lockdowns from Covid-19, nearly all RV manufacturers stopped production. As the country continues to loosen restrictions, RV sales are accelerating—at record-breaking numbers!
“There are so many people asking or trying to figure out how to get into RVing right now,” proclaims Michael Barras, General Manager at Campers RV Center
in Shreveport, who admits current sales are being driven by people who want to explore the country, but also want to be able to adhere to social distancing guidelines. “Americans love the freedom to travel,” Barras admits. “The enrichment that comes with living an active outdoor lifestyle, and the ability to go where you want, when you want. RVing allows more control over your environment. It allows people to escape the real world—there is no TV and no internet. Just getting back to the basics.”
Meeting Demand
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand that this kind of soaring demand necessitates consistent supply. Once factories reopened after the lockdown, manufacturers have been producing RVs at breakneck speed. Unfortunately, they aren’t keeping up with the demand. There are shortages on everything, claims Barras, from steel for the chassis to lumber for the sidewalls. Even air conditioning units are in short supply. For buyers, this has required patience. Some have had to wait months for their RV, complicating travel plans that already were postponed or rescheduled due to Covid. Others have had to travel simply to pick up their RV—essentially jumping head-first as new RV owners with epic road trips they’ll never forget—especially those that travel from Texas, Mississippi or Arkansas to buy their RV. Several customers, notes Barras, are from out-of-state and has delivered units as far away as California and Washington State. “They knew exactly what they wanted and we were the only dealer who had what they wanted in stock. So, they put down a deposit and a few weeks later we had it delivered.”
What to Look For When Buying an RV
Buying a new RV is a lot like buying a new car—but the process is more complicated than it might seem. New or preowned? Luxury or basic? Drive-aboard or tow-behind trailer? These are just some of the questions you need to ask yourself in the early stages of the process. Another key decision revolves around what type of RV to buy. They come in a variety of shapes, styles, sizes— and, consequently, prices and levels of luxury. And every model, according to Barras, has its own pros and cons. “There truly is an RV for every lifestyle and price point,” he admits. “From beginners to those looking to replicate a two-bedroom condo, just make sure you understand what you are getting into. Prices range from a few thousand dollars for small pop-up trailers to millions of dollars for mansions on wheels.”

rigs on the market. They can reach up to 45 feet in length and often feature multiple slide outs, as well as top-end appliances, full-sized kitchens, and a variety of sleeping surfaces for up to 8 or more passengers.
Class B Motorhomes. Sometimes referred to as sleeper vans or camper vans, Class B motorhomes are definitely on the small end of the RV spectrum. What they lack in space, they often more than make up for in flexibility.

Class C Motorhomes. Class C motorhomes offer many of the same amenities and conveniences as their Class A cousins at a smaller price point. They’re built into standard truck chassis, which makes them relatively simple to operate even for those intimidated by the idea of RV driving—and their iconic over-cockpit attic space can be used for storage, sleeping, or to house a killer home entertainment system. Fifth Wheels and Travel Trailers. Towable RVs, like fifth wheels and travel trailers, offer a whole set of unique benefits (and challenges). Because they don’t have to devote any space to a cockpit, they boast some of the largest and most well-laid-out living floor plans out there. Just keep in mind that setting up camp won’t be as easy as pulling over and putting the vehicle in park—as most fifth wheels and travel trailers do require some set-up when it’s time to make or break camp. Likewise, buyers must address an entirely separate set of questions about the towing capacity of the vehicle with which they intend to tow it.

RV Sales are on the Rise
Even luxury RV brands are seeing record-breaking sales. Barras says sales at Campers RV Center in Shreveport— which include motorhomes such as Thor, Keystone, Coachmen, and Forest River—rose significantly since the beginning of the pandemic. Month-after-month, sales records are being broken. Barras predicts that sales will continue to rise. “We have enough demand right now to carry us through the next eighteen months,” said Barras. “Our goal now is building a foundation. We want to take these people who have come to the RV lifestyle because of the pandemic and turn them into lifetime RV buyers.”
described the journey as “a real escape,” but noted that it wasn’t all unicorns and rainbows. “At one point I got stuck going the wrong way on a road in the middle of nowhere and had to do a 27-point turn to get out.” Later this summer, he plans to take his RV to Big Bend National Park in west Texas hoping to even “boondock” along the way, which is what RV owners call it when they camp for the night in the middle of nowhere, or at a location without amenities hookups. “Like everybody else, I’ve been stuck in my house with my kids for months,” Smith said. “Any ability to use it to get a change of scenery will be great.”
Learning on the Fly
Of course, once you get an RV—you’ve got to break it and get your feet wet by taking it on the road. “Start small,” suggests Frank Smith. The new RV owner openly admits that is he was up for learning on the fly. Within two weeks of purchasing his RV, he took his family camping to Texas’ Wright Patman Lake, about 70 miles from Shreveport. “For me RVing was the perfect opportunity to get out of the house and do something new while feeling safe in our own home away from home,” he said. Overall, the family loved the trailer experience and Smith

During such unprecedented times, we have to find medical solutions that are safe and effective for our loved ones. In order to protect some of our most vulnerable, eMD has come out with a telehealth mobile app that connects the patient to a live doctor, at all times, in any state.
OUR HOME IS YOUR HOME. WE ARE LOCALLY OWNED!
During covid, doctor’s offices and hospitals can be frightening. Our older generations that may be starting to experience neurological effects of Alzheimer’s may not need to go into those environments. The fear of leaving comfortable surroundings and environments may be detrimental rather than helpful. The number of people allowed in doctor’s offices and rooms can make attending your loved one’s appointments difficult. eMD can help!

to these early efforts, outpatient cataract surgery has become the standard of care for most patients undergoing cataract surgery. As more patients throughout the ARK-LA-TEX continued to look to Lusk Eye Specialists for the latest breakthroughs in ophthalmology, Dr. Lusk soon found himself needing additional surgeons to help continue his tradition of eye excellence in the region. Fortunately, his two sons had seen the tremendous impact their father had made in the community and with patients while they were growing up in Shreveport. His influence and the manner in which he treated patients inspired his two sons – Jeffrey & Bryan – to attend medical school and eventually become Fellow-shiptrained ophthalmologists. Dr. Bryan Lusk pursued his Fellowship in Corneal & External Disease while Dr. Jeffrey Lusk pursued his Fellowship training in Glaucoma management. Today, they are held in the same high regard as their father and are noted as two of the ARK-LATEX’s leading cataract & refractive surgeons. Together, the three Lusk surgeons have more combined cataract & refractive surgical experience than any other family of surgeons in the region.

dency, a Corneal Fellowship and then settle in Houston to practice where he and his brothers and sisters grew up. And then an opportunity in Shreveport opened up…and the rest is a ’40-year history.’ Today, the Lusk family is proud to call Shreveport home. After establishing Lusk Eye Specialists in 1981, Dr. Lusk quickly began to establish a reputation for eye excellence as he introduced advanced new techniques for performing cataract and refractive surgery. But what made Lusk Eye Specialists unique was Dr. Lusk’s dedication to combining next-generation technology and advanced surgical techniques with a personal commitment to treating every patient…like family. Dr. Lusk was also instrumental in opening the ARK-LATEX’s first outpatient surgery center dedicated entirely to ophthalmology. Not only was his new method of outpatient surgery considered safer and more convenient for patients, it was also more affordable for both patients and the insurance industry. Patients quickly learned to appreciate all the added benefits of having their surgical procedure performed in a dedicated ambulatory surgical center staffed by a team of eye care specialists. Thanks
Having watched their father ‘Treat Patients Like Family’ for decades before they joined the practice, it hasn’t taken Dr. Bryan and Dr. Jeffrey long to embrace the same patient-focused care regime at Lusk Eye Specialists. There are obviously a number of reasons why more patients choose Lusk Eye Specialists to restore their vision and renew their lives. But the opportunity to be ‘Treated Like Family – By Family’ is why generations of families in the ARK-LA-TEX trust the two generations of Lusk family surgeons for something as precious as their vision. If you ask ‘Shreveport’s Man of Vision’ about his 40-year legacy of eye excellence, he’ll simply say that his FOCUS has always been on treating patients like family…by family. SBMAG.NET

People did not want “street style” tacos. They wanted shredded cheese, ground-beef, lettuce, tomatoes & sour cream on their tacos & not Prime Grade ahi tuna. We didn’t even offer shredded cheese & sour cream on our first menu. In fact, a lot of our loss was merely through the educational process of a seared ahi tuna fish taco. People would listen & try it. After the fish taco was served, they’d walk up to the cashier & ask for an exchange for a ground beef with shredded cheese & sour cream on it”, said O’Byrne. “We eventually changed our entire menu to accommodate the market & have stuck with it for 15 years. It works”.
I
n 2002, Don O’Byrne, President/Founder of Don Juanz Baja Beach Tacos, had a dream to bring his time spent working in restaurants, kitchens & resorts in Southern California & Baja Mexico to Bossier City. This dream led him to craft a business plan worthy of notice by Ford Motor Company & Diversity, Inc. Magazine’s “Henry T. Ford Entrepreneur of the year” business plan contest. “I didn’t win, but I gained recognition that assured me my business plan made sense”. Even though O’Byrne had a great plan, he still faced challenges of securing capital from a bank. “I applied for business loans through 14 different banks & was declined by all 14 of them- and my personal credit score was an 860. I then met with three private investor groups who eventually all turned me down” said O’Byrne. “Their reasons were never detailed. They just weren’t interested in fast/casual restaurant concepts at that time”, said O’Byrne. “This sent me back to the drawing board to re-evaluate my business plan & re-apply with only smaller, local banks. My last meeting was with Ouachita Independent Bank, who had previously declined my business loan. We discussed putting together a smaller loan package and having the build-out done by myself to save additional money.” After three years of sourcing capital to open his restaurant, O’Byrne finally funded his dream & began build-out of his Bossier City location in 2005, but not everything went as planned. “We started as a fast-casual, authentic Taqueria style restaurant & nearly filed bankruptcy within the first 12 months.
During this difficult stage of his business, Don was also a competitive youth football team coach for his son’s team for six years. “The Don Juanz Redbullz was a select, competitive Youth Football Association team that only suffered losses from one or two area teams. At the end of each season, we’d always have our awards banquet at Don Juanz & celebrate the season. Whenever we had a championship loss, which was not often, I’d always quote Michael Jordan’s words for encouragement- “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over again in my life - Michael Jordan”, said O’Byrne. It was these words of encouragement that O’Byrne recalls were also instrumental in his drive to succeed. “I’ve learned to never give up & to always look for a solution. Sometimes, it just takes me a few times to get it right”, said O’Byrne. Certainly by his business growth, we see he knows how to get on his feet whenever he’s been knocked down!

or well over fifty-five years, the Hebert family has built a legacy of local service to the community.
Mark Hebert is a second-generation automotive dealer that operates Hebert’s Town & Country Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram in Shreveport, Town & Country Ford-Lincoln in Minden and Legacy Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram in Natchitoches. Mark is following in the footsteps of his late father, Marshall Hebert. That journey started in 1964 when Marshall began a career in the automobile industry at RBW Motors on Youree Drive. From there Marshall moved into management at Bob Post Chrysler and in just a few years, became the owner. Mark joined his Father soon after college and worked his way through the organization from the Service Department to Sales and Management. Both father and son were very involved in their industry and in the community that supported them. Marshall served as President of the New Car Dealers Association for Shreveport and Bossier, Chairman of the Louisiana Automobile Dealers Association, NADA Director for Louisiana and on the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission, just to name a few. Mark Hebert has followed suit. He currently is the NADA Director for Louisiana, was Past Chairman of LADA and past President of the Shreveport-Bossier New Car Dealers Association. All of the Hebert dealerships are a true family affair with three more Hebert’s joining the business in the past several years. Beau, Chris and Drew, Mark’s three sons, started from the ground up like their father and grandfather. s a youngster, Trey McGee spent a great deal of time playing in his Grandfather, John Henson’s, flooring and carpeting showroom. John had been providing flooring products and professional installation since the late 1960s to commercial buildings, new home construction and remodeling. Trey grew up to play college baseball as a left-handed pitcher for McNeese State University in Lake Charles. Just before Trey graduated with a degree in business, long-time manager, Wayne Pardue retired. Trey began working at Henson’s Carpet full time right after graduation. With his grandfather as his mentor, he hit the ground running, learning the business by working in all the areas – from the warehouse to the showroom. Trey recalls his first customer service call alongside his grandfather where he learned to always keep the customer happy. This helped shape his customer service response. In 2016, Trey bought the business from his grandfather, who still drops in for coffee and moral support. Stephen Tyer, DDS, Stephen R. Hooper, DDS, and Christopher Hooper, DDS
r. Stephen Hooper began practicing general dentistry in North Bossier in 1988. As his practice grew over the years and his son, Dr. Christopher Hooper, joined the practice in 2014, they decided to relocate into a new, larger, building further north on Airline Dr. At that time, the practice was rebranded as “Hooper Family Dentistry.” In 2019, the practice welcomed Dr. Stephen Tyer, who grew up in North Bossier as well, and has brought his enthusiasm and kindness to the growing Hooper Family patient base. His commitment and dedication to the local dental needs and down to earth personality has been a great asset to the practice. In the wake of the pandemic of 2020, Hooper Family Dentistry was blessed with an ability to bring their passion to South Bossier in the opening of “Hooper Family Dentistry, Too.” Dr. Christopher Hooper oversees this practice Monday through Thursday; as well as, still seeing patients at the Airline location on Fridays. Dr. Chris grew up in North Bossier where he graduated from Airline High School in 2006. He then went on to study at Louisiana Tech University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2010 with a major in Biology. In 2010, he was accepted into the LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans, LA where he received the 2010 Baldridge Scholarship for outstanding academic excellence as an undergraduate from LA Tech. The range offers 19 shooting lanes equipped with the finest target, ventilation, and safety systems in the industry. The intuitive effort placed on the design of the facility is like no other. The result of this collaborative effort is multiple design improvements not yet seen in the industry that result in enhanced energy efficiency, shooter safety, and aesthetics.

In 2013, this juicy love affair led him to open their first franchise in North Bossier. “When we initially opened, we had a very inexperienced team with no real management. My wife and I learned as we went, working over 100 hours a week with our newborn son in the back.” Hard work paid off. The Gibbs grew to expand their business to the Mansfield Road location. e all know a married couple that seem absolutely perfect for each other. A dynamic duo who are attractive, respectful and supportive of each other, and willing to face the challenges of marriage, family and working together arm in arm. A beautiful couple. Amy and Don O’Byrne fit the bill. They ARE the quintessential beautiful pair. And they’re beautiful in so many ways that do not include just physicality. They’re both healthy and fit. They work out by running and lifting weights at least five days a week –30 minutes to an hour with each session. They both enjoy a healthy, nutritious approach to eating. They live in a gorgeous home in a lovely neighborhood. A home they bought with good, solid bones but in need of drastic renovation and repair. Most of the work the couple tackled themselves. In a nut shell, this couple isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and put in the work to get things done. And to top it off –they are both just as beautiful inside as they are out. After spending the better part of his youth in California, Don returned to Shreveport and opened a restaurant in Bossier City. He met Amy and soon married. She joined

him in managing his restaurant endeavors. Don Juanz Baja Beach Tacos had already become a huge hit. So much so that their guests soon clamored for a sister restaurant in Shreveport. What makes Don Juanz different? It is the home of Louisiana’s original fish taco. From the very beginning, Don Juanz has won positive reviews and numerous awards from local publications like SB MAGAZINE. Many reviewers on Yelp have declared Don Juanz as the best salsa and queso around. Not a pair afraid of a little hard work, Don and Amy could be found at any given time serving their customers personally. Don Juanz Baja Beach Tacos is a locally owned, truly family operated restaurant committed to serving fresh, locally sourced food that is healthy and delicious. The menu is made up of recipes Don has created over the past 20 years and those from his younger days while enjoying the Baja beaches and cantinas from Rosarito to Cabo. Healthy, clean, wonderful personal service –Don Juanz is the perfect place for lunch, family events and company parties.

It came at no surprise when Don and Amy were approached by Ochsner’s Eat Fit Program to be included in their search for local restaurants that met the qualifications to be Eat Fit certified. Eat Fit. What exactly is Eat Fit? MAY 2021
| SBMAG.NET
Eat Fit is a program that began when registered dietitian and nutrition journalist, Molly Kimball, embarked on her journey of helping people live their healthiest, strongest lives. You can bet that she had her work cut out for her. Living in Louisiana, where the good food and good times go hand in hand, she set a goal that may have seemed daunting let alone, impossible to attain. To give you an idea of what Molly was up against, let’s look at some terrifying statistics.
LOUISIANA RANK COMPARED TO OTHER STATES: H H H H H H
Cardiovasc. Disease 41 H High cholesterol 48 Diabetes 42 H Obesity 42 High BP 45 H Low Birth Weight 49 33.9% between 18 & 44 years of age are obese 42.7% between 45 & 64 years of age are obese 30.2% of people 65 plus years of age are obese
Most of these people –43.2% -earn between $50 thousand and $75 thousand dollars a year. Those with an income of less than $25 thousand a year rank 39.6%. With the percentages being this close on the socioeconomic scale, it’s difficult to blame the inability to maintain a healthy weight on income levels. At least not in Louisiana. Even more interesting than income levels but perhaps an explanation for the high percentage of obesity within the lower income scale: “Obese persons, particularly women, are socially stigmatized, which adversely affects their educational, socioeconomic and marital status. Obese individuals are excluded from certain occupations, and are discriminated against in others. Various surveys have found lower educational and socioeconomic achievement in obese and overweight populations. The inverse relationship between obesity and social class is more evident in women. Obese women were found to complete fewer years of school, be less likely to marry, and have lower household incomes compared with women of normal weight. They were also less likely to improve their social status on marriage. Although differences in socioeconomic status between obese and non-obese persons might be accounted for to some extent by differences in social, economic and educational background, obesity is frequently associated with health problems or reduced physical performance, which can restrict socioeconomic achievement. Furthermore, society’s poor perception of obese persons, particularly women, is a major handicap to socioeconomic progress.”1 While this is an older study (1994), it still holds true to a large extent in 2021.Obese people are in for a challenge whether its social stigmatism or health concerns. Even more reason to team up with Ochsner’s Hospital to develop the Ochsner’s Eat Fit program, a nonprofit initiative
that collaborates with local restaurants and chefs to develop and feature menu items that are nutritious and delicious. Eat Fit had its start in New Orleans but soon, by partnering with Blue Cross Blue Shield, found its way into six regions throughout the state. With the Eat Fit app, we can find Eat Fit restaurants complete with full nutrition facts of the Eat Fit menu items. We can also find recipes, community wellness resources and even connect to a health professional.

Don Juanz also holds the north Louisiana record for having the most menu options endorsed by the program. Everything on their menu is gluten-free except for these five items; chicken mole’, any steak menu item (soy-base marinade), El Dorado Tacos (mahi-mahi has soy-ginger glaze), flour & wheat tortillas.
Molly’s philosophy is, “Instead of obsessing over what not to eat, my preference is to put the focus on the good stuff that I’m adding into my diet. The more healthful stuff we squeeze in, the more we edge out any space for the not-sogood-for-you stuff. Nutrition isn’t one-size-fits-all. Keep things simple without over complicating. My goal is to help clients erase those “rules” we all create for ourselves and take the pressure away from being perfect.” As we circle back to Don Juanz Baja Beach Tacos,Don O’Byrne had already helped a couple of patrons shed the pounds just by counseling them on good nutrition and healthy eating habits. He and Amy have worked diligently to offer menu items that are not only delicious but healthy. So, when Eat Fit found that their restaurant fit the criteria for the program and was selected for the Eat Fit “stamp of

ROOF INSURANCE CLAIMS
WHAT TO KNOW
D
ealing with roof damage and an insurance claim after a terrible storm can be a stressful time for any homeowner. Not only do you have to make sure your property is safe for your family, but often you also have to deal with a complicated roofing insurance claim that involves insurance adjusters, mortgage companies, and contractors. Asphalt shingle roofs usually protect a home for 12 to 15 years. However, an unexpected severe storm can change this overnight. If you are ever a victim of hail or storm damage, it’s important that you file a claim with your insurance company and get the repairs done as quickly as possible. An insurance claim can be complicated, and if done incorrectly, it can slow the entire process—and getting back to normality. Here are a few steps to keep in mind when you file a roof insurance claim. STEP 1: ASSESS YOUR ROOF’S DAMAGE First, figure how bad the damage is. If you’re physically unable to inspect your roof safely, hire a local roofing company to assess the damage. The roofing contractor should give you a detailed report of the roof’s damage and what work needs to be done. Moreover, many contractors also employ certified public adjusters that can discuss your claim on your behalf with your insurance provider.
52
MAY 2021
| SBMAG.NET
STEP 2: WHAT DOES YOUR INSURANCE COVER? Before you file your claim, read your insurance policy and determine your rights. Check your policy to confirm that roof damage is covered. Take notes on relevant details concerning the limitation of what damages are covered. Being well informed ensures you get what you’ve paid for. STEP 3: DOCUMENT THE DAMAGE TO YOUR ROOF After determining the damage to your roof, you need to validate your claim by providing your insurance provider with certain documents. Be sure to include the date of the storm. You or your contractor should take photos of all the damage and fill out a detailed report describing the damage and the work required for repairs. Document any interior damage that resulted from your damaged roof. STEP 4: CONTACT YOUR INSURER Get in touch with your insurer as soon as possible to find out how to file your claim. Some insurance policies require you to file within a certain amount of time after the damage is caused. Talk directly to your insurance agent to find out what the procedures are for roof repairs and replacements. STEP 5: FILE YOUR CLAIM File a claim using the claim form your insurer provides. Be sure to provide all relative information and evidence to your provider that supports your claim. If there is interior
damage, include copies of receipts for damaged furniture, along with an estimate of what it will cost to repair any other interior damage. If the damages are severe enough to force your family to live in a hotel while repairs are made, you’ll need to include this cost as well. STEP 6: GET A LOCAL ROOFING COMPANY Contact and meet with a local roofing company. Check for reviews or ask your insurance agent for a preferred list of roofing contractors. Also, ask for a written estimate of the cost of repairing or replacing your roof. If your roof needs to be replaced entirely, make sure that their report indicates that it is necessary and that basic repairs are not a remedy for the amount of damage. STEP 7: MEET WITH AN INSURANCE ADJUSTER An insurance adjuster will visit your home and assess the damage to validate your claim. If possible, have your contractor there when the adjuster comes so that they can discuss the repair requirements together.
Giving back to the community Hiring local labor Quality work Commercial or Residential
CREATING LOCAL JOBS
STEP 8: REPLACE YOUR ROOF Once all the paperwork is done, and the claim has been approved, it’s time to hire your roofing contractor. Experiencing damage to your home and dealing with your insurance company and roofing contractors is undoubtedly a stressful time. However, when it’s finally done, you’ll have a new roof on your home that should last many years to come— minus any more severe storms.
A FEW MORE THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN YOU MAKE A ROOF INSURANCE CLAIM: • • • • •
The homeowner is only responsible for a deductible. DO NOT get estimates before you make a claim. The contractor has to bill dollar for dollar on what insurance is paying. Otherwise, insurance will pay less. If you get a cheaper estimate than what the insurance adjuster writes, they will go with the more affordable estimate. You might end up owing more money. Homeowners in Louisiana need to get the check directly from the insurance company to pay the contractor. In Texas, the contractor is paid directly from the insurance company.
BAYOU STATE ROOFING is a locally owned and operated company that specializes in Residential and Commercial Roofing. For 8 years, they have served the Shreveport Bossier area, and most recently helped those in need of roofs and repairs in Lake Charles after Hurricane Laura. Bayou State is licensed and insured to specifically work on roofs, while many roofing companies and contractors do not have roofing on their liability insurance. Out of state roofers, builders, and contractors are not bound by the warranties of Louisiana. They are also not here to personally answer questions and help with your specific needs. They go back home and you’re left with their possible mistakes. Bayou State works with you from beginning to end and after the job. They aren’t done when the roof is up. They want to make sure you’re happy and safe in your home.

SB LIVING
BY BECKY CUNNINGHAM
A
garden is pure happiness. Much more than a simple hobby…gardening is medicine for the soul. I am a witness to the truth in Alfred Austin’s quote, “The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.” Over the last ten years, I have invested many hours laboring in flower beds that surround our little country home. It brings me great joy to reap the rewards of the time and care given to each plant. During the warmer seasons, I can often be found cutting various blooms to bring inside and make bouquets for our table, or as gifts for family and friends. My garden is always evolving, but never complete. I have learned many lessons through sowing and reaping. The abundance of beauty is quite addicting. Once you dig into the gardening scene, be warned…it steals your heart.
gardening how to get started
54
MAY 2021
| SBMAG.NET
How does someone begin gardening? Here are several tips to guide you down the path:
START SMALL. One flower bed is enough. Begin by choosing an area that is near a water source. Choose an appropriate edging material… such as brick, stones, metal landscape border, or cedar boards. Purchase good soil. Local nurseries are a good source for topsoil. Container gardens are also a perfect way to begin growing a few plants and learning how to tend to their needs. As you feel more confident, enlarge your space.
KNOW YOUR PLANT HARDINESS ZONE. The USDA chart is divided into eleven planting zones according to the lowest winter temperature a plant can survive. Here in North Louisiana, we are in planting zone 8. Be sure to purchase plants suitable for the zone 8, so they will thrive in our warm climate. WATCH THE SUN AS IT RISES AND FALLS ON YOUR CHOSEN GARDEN AREA. Choose plants according to their sunlight requirements. Be aware of where the sun streams through during the hottest part of the day. READ THE PLANT TAGS. Each individual plant comes with a care tag that lists the information specific to the plant. The tag will have the scientific and common name, the mature shape and size of the plant, how much space is needed, water requirements, and sun tolerance. These details are valuable in giving the plant a healthy start. Additional care tips can be found on the back of the tag. Remember to keep an envelope or bag to save each of the plant tags for future reference. As your garden grows, the tags come in handy when you forget the names of plants. LEARN THE DIFFERENCE IN PERENNIALS AND ANNUALS. Perennial plants will “come back” after the winter each year. However, annuals will only last for a season, and then need to be pulled up and replaced. It is best to mix both types of plants, so that you do not need to constantly replace large sections of your garden space.
INVEST IN BASIC GARDEN TOOLS. Simple daily garden chores include removing weeds, pruning, staking, and harvesting. Therefore, this requires a hand shovel, garden hoe, pruning shears, and a weeder. In addition, a good pair of garden gloves will be your best friend. Last year, my best investment was a garden cart that can be pushed to each flower bed holding all the essentials. If small space gardening is your style, a durable garden apron keeps all the necessities within reach. CONSIDER THE SOURCE. Local nurseries provide options for plants that will thrive in our hardiness zone. It is a great idea to ask questions and get advice from the nursery workers…as they have a wealth of information to share. Ellis Home and Garden and Garrison’s Home and Garden are two local favorites with a large supply of healthy plant varieties. WATER WITH CARE. Timing is important when it comes to watering each garden area. It is essential for growth and plant establishment. Rainfall, soil, and humidity will determine how often flower beds need to be watered. Early morning deep, slow watering is usually the most beneficial. Remember, a garden takes time and care…just like people. Gardening can be such a gratifying experience when you begin to see the fruits of your labor. Enjoy learning and getting your hands dirty. Sometimes it takes several months to see your hard work pay off. Most importantly, do not give up and learn from your mistakes. It will be worth your effort!

SB PETS
BY HAILEY LAWSON
WHY YOU SHOULD
Spay & Neuter YOUR PETS
M
illions of dogs and cats are euthanized each year in the United States simply because there aren’t enough good pet homes available. By spaying or neutering your pet, you’ll help reduce the chance of unwanted or homeless kittens or puppies. Also, there are some great medical and behavioral benefits to spaying your female pets and neutering male pets. MEDICAL BENEFITS
Ř By spaying your female pet, she will live a longer, healthier life. Spaying reduces the chance of uterine infections and breast tumors. Breast tumors are malignant in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. For the best protection from these diseases, it’s best to spay your female pet before her first heat.
Ř Neutering your male pet eliminates the chance of
testicular cancer and will help prevent prostate issues. These diseases are two extremely common and serious problems for senior male cats and dogs.
BEHAVIORAL BENEFITS
Ř After spaying your female pet, she will no longer go into heat. A female cat usually goes into heat about five days
60
MAY 2021
| SBMAG.NET
every three weeks during the breeding season. A female dog comes into heat about every six months. During heat, your pet may urinate more than usual, and there will also be a blood-tinged discharge. Your pet may also seem distracted or nervous.
Ř A neutered male cat or dog is less likely to roam or escape
from the house looking for a female. Once he's free, he risks getting hit by a car or in a fight with other male animals. Also, a neutered male should behave better. An unneutered cat or dog is more likely to mark its territory by spraying urine all over the house. Your dog might be less likely to mount other dogs or people after he’s neutered. Additionally, some aggression problems may be avoided by neutering your pet at an early age.
WHEN TO SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PET Discuss with your veterinarian to determine the best time to spay or neuter your pet. The traditional age to neuter a male dog is six to nine months, while females should be fixed prior to their first heat—at five or six months. It is generally considered safe for kittens to be spayed or neutered as young as eight weeks old. Your veterinarian will provide pre-surgical and post-surgical information to follow. Your pet might experience some discomfort or pain after surgery. Therefore your veterinarian may send
some pain medicine home. Remember, spaying or neutering your pets is also highly cost-effective and is far less than the cost of caring for a litter. In Louisiana, 130,000 pets enter shelters each year. Of that number, approximately 92,000 of these animals are put to sleep annually. Louisiana shelters can’t save and support the huge number of accidental litters, strays, and family pets brought to the shelter every day. Spaying/neutering your pets does not only benefit our community, but also benefits you and your cat or dog. There are many low-cost spay/neuter programs offered in the area, but a local favorite is Robinson’s Rescue, located on Line Avenue. Check out their affordable spay/neuter programs. Also, don't forget about their upcoming annual event, Best in Sheaux! Best in Sheaux raises funds for Robinson’s Rescue to continue to provide free and low-cost spay/neuter services to underserved pet owners to reduce the problem of animal overpopulation. Every animal that is spayed or neuter means thousands of fewer animals born into homelessness or poverty, most of whom end up living on the streets. By attending Best in Sheaux, or buying raffle tickets, or taking part in the dog show voting, you are contributing directly to Robinson’s Rescue and helping them achieve
their mission to make our region a safer place for pets and the people who love them. Is your dog the next Best in Sheaux? Can your furry friend strut their way to the top of the pack? It's their time to shine at the Robinson's Rescue Best in Show 2021! Best in Sheaux includes the online silent auction and dog voting starting on May 26, the televised runway dog sheaux on June 5 and the VIP Awards Sheaux and Sponsor Party on June 12 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at The Lot in downtown Shreveport. The Small Business Development Center at SUSLA is working with the Louisiana District Office of the Small Business Administration, (SBA) to target local food industry owners to make sure they have the imperative funding and confidence needed to remain open and continue serving the community. SUSLA Center Director Darrin Dixon said, “We want to do our part to make sure that restaurant owners are aware of the resources available for them and know that we are here to assist in accessing them.” Southern Shreveport Chancellor Dr. Rodney D. Ellis stated, “…Having the ability to serve a segment of the business community that was hit so hard during the pandemic is a great opportunity for the SUSLA Small Business Development Center.” WILLIS-KNIGHTON HEART & VASCULAR INSTITUTE FIRST IN NORTHWEST LOUISIANA WITH SHOCKWAVE CORONARY LITHOTRIPSY Willis-Knighton Heart & Vascular Institute is the first in Northwest Louisiana to offer a new life-saving procedure Shockwave Intravascular Lithotripsy for coronary arteries. The first procedures were performed by Jonathan M. Davis, MD, and Robert Martin, MD, of Pierremont Cardiology. The minimally invasive procedure, which takes about one hour, received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in late February for the treatment of blocked coronary arteries. The Shockwave IVL System is based on the same technology used to destroy kidney stones so they can more easily pass through the urinary tract. “As interventional cardiologists, calcium deposition in the blood vessel wall represents the most difficult impediment to successful placement of a stent in a heart artery,” Dr. Davis says. “We are encountering this more and more as people are living longer with heart disease. It is exciting to be able to offer this technology to our patients to optimize their stent result and improve their symptoms and quality of life.”
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. SPRING STREET MUSEUM REOPENS The Spring Street Museum reopened to the public on a limited basis on April 13. Only 10 individuals will be allowed in the museum at a time. All visitors must wear masks. The museum will be open for small-group tours and walk-in visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The museum’s permanent collection of artifacts from Shreveport’s early history remains on display. Curator Marty Loschen will be available to provide information on the collection, the historic building that houses the museum and local history. The museum is housed in a former bank built in the 1860s. It is the oldest surviving building in Shreveport. The museum closed in early 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, museum staff members continued curating online exhibits on topics ranging from the Civil Rights movement in Shreveport to the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage. The LSUS Foundation operates the museum on behalf of LSU Shreveport. The foundation, aided by a generous gift from the Friends of the Spring Street Museum, recently completed significant renovations and repairs to the building. LSUS GRAPHIC DESIGN RANKED BEST IN LA LSU Shreveport has been awarded the #1 Best in Louisiana Offering Graphic Design Programs designation in the PLEXUSS Global Rankings. NEARLY $400,000 AWARDED TO CHRISTUS SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER HEALTH SYSTEM TO SUPPORT CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK HOSPITALS SERVICES During its recent Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) grant event, CHRISTUS Foundation Shreveport-Bossier announced the award of nearly $400,000 to CHRISTUS Shreveport-Bossier Health System to provide support throughout its facilities for pediatric-focused care. CUTENESS THAT JUST WON’T QUIT Lauren and Sam Brimer were so thankful that their firstborn Sawyer was already sleeping through the night at such an early age, but they became concerned when they noticed that the left side of the back of his head seemed abnormally flat. When the problem seemed to worsen, they consulted a maxillofacial specialist who eventually diagnosed the problem as plagiocephaly (flattened head syndrome) and referred them to Snell’s Orthotics & Prosthetics. “When we got to Snell’s they scanned him right away, and within two weeks they had his helmet ready,” Lauren said. “Everyone at Snell’s was so sweet and genuine. You can tell they love what they do. When Sawyer would get anxious during scanning they would sing or talk to him to help him relax.” After making sure Sawyer wore the device the prescribed twenty-three hours per day, his parents proudly reported that his treatment was a success and the helmet was removed a few weeks before his 1st birthday.

the Cancer Center has more than 18-years experience treating patients with the TomoTherapy System and recently upgraded to the Radixact System, the next-generation TomoTherapy platform. “At Willis-Knighton, we have always tried to introduce next-generation radiotherapy technology. The Radixact System with ClearRT has the potential to change clinical practice,” says Lane R. electric cars INLOUISIANA I
ntroduced more than 100 years ago, electric cars are not new to the automotive industry. Through a series of breakthroughs, and numerous inventors, the first practical electric vehicle was introduced in the second half of the 19th century by a Frenchman.
It was in 1890 that the U.S. saw it’s first successful electric car. It could carry six passengers at a time and topped out at a whopping 14 miles per hour. Needless to say, this invention created a spark and over the next few years the number of automakers of electric cars started to grow. New York City even had a fleet of electric taxis. Ferdinand Porsche, founder of the sports car company by the same name, developed an electric car called the P1 in 1898. Around the same time, he created the world’s first hybrid electric car. By 1900, the electric car accounted for one third of all vehicles on the road. Then, Henry Ford originated mass auto production techniques. America quickly became a dominate force in the automotive industry. This lowered the price for an automobile and more and more Americans could afford to buy. The “Big Three” auto companies emerged in the

1920’s – Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. These factors, along with the U.S. developing better road systems, caused the electric car to begin to sputter. When Texas discovered oil, gas prices when down and filling stations began popping up across America. As Americans began to travel, they found that rural America didn’t offer the electriciby Seva May ty needed to recharge their vehicles. By 1935, the electric car began to disappear.
It was also in the period between the 1920’s and 1930’s that General Motors innovated planned obsolescence. This gave them higher profits and an edge over their competitors. As Japan ascended as the leader in car manufacturing, American car companies rose to the occasion by undergoing a massive organizational restructuring and technological renaissance. Plant modernization and
retooling along with the development of functional aerodynamic designs set the stage for a more fuel-efficient, less polluting and a much safer automobile. Now, in 2021, General Motors is leading the charge in manufacturing innovation with the electric vehicle. Right here in north Louisiana, a General Motors dealer, Marketplace Chevy Buick, currently holds the exclusive inventory in the market for a fully electric automobile – the Bolt EV. GM has invested billions of dollars in electric vehicle programs through 2025. The Bolt EV can be charged through a regular electric

t’s difficult to know if electric vehicles will take off again, especially here in Louisiana where most of our economy is based on oil and gas related industries. But, if everyone converts to an electric mode of transportation, it’s clear that it will make for a more sustainable future. First, we’ll have to enhance the power grids across the United States. That will cost a great deal more money but will hopefully provide enough electricity for everyone to “plug in” to invest in a cleaner environment.
outlet and will run for 40 to 50 miles. GM will pay for the installation of a level 2 EV charging station in your home which allows for increased mileage range with an overnight charge. SWEPCO is working with builders through its New Homes Energy Efficiency Incentive Program to encourage the installation of 208-240-volt outlet in garages during the construction phase of new homes.

DR. NATHAN LORD, PH.D. L S U E N T O M O LO G I S T
Being an assistant professor in the Department of Entomology (insects!) at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge is far more than one might expect. My job is to travel the world collecting insects, visiting museums, describing new species, teaching, and mentoring graduate students. After 25 years of poor vision and many recommendations from friends and loved ones—things like “LASIK was the best thing I’ve done” and “I should’ve done it years ago”—I visited the Willis-Knighton Eye Institute. I felt as blind as a bat (I was a -5.75 in each eye), and thankfully my eyes qualified for the LASIK procedure.
How LASIK as affected my life: It’s the little things- taking a shower and being able to tell which shampoo bottle your grabbing. Jumping in the pool and not worrying about losing a contact. Being able to roll over and actually read the alarm clock (and not needing the jumbo-size number displays). LASIK means never having to fish out a stray lens from the top of your eye. Riding on a boat to the tuna spot without having to squint to keep your eyes from drying out. Reading the jersey number of LSU receivers from the upper deck in Death Valley. And instance after instance, day after day, the little things add up. Vision is one of our most dominant senses (I lecture on this in class), and the eye is a marvel of biological engineering. Our basic ability to perceive the world is so fundamental that it is sometimes hard to grasp. So, as much as I used to rationalize away my bad vision as “it only means I can’t be an Air Force pilot or swim underwater with my eyes open,” I’ve learned that good vision isn’t a luxury or luck of the draw, but a necessity—and one that can be obtained. Although I’m always skeptical of statements like “This was the best decision I’ve made,” in my case, it’s true. Many thanks to Dr. Shelby, Dr. Coleman and Dr. Lewis at the Willis-Knighton Eye Institute for giving me back what I hadn’t realized I’d truly lost.

T
he process was surprisingly quick. I remember sitting up from the table, and although still blurry, I could instantly see things with a clarity I never had before. The “EXIT” sign above the door was actually legible from across the room—any other day, it would have been a red blob. After a night of recovery, I woke up and didn’t have to fumble around for my glasses for the first time in forever.
I’m an avid outdoorsman, and the improvement in my vision has actually continued beyond a return to “normal.” My vision is now better than 20/20, and I can definitely tell. Many of the things I love to do are now easier. I can absolutely see improvements in my vision—shooting in dim light, spotting redfish through the water, and focusing on that small target with my bow all seem easier. My only regret is that I didn’t invest in myself and have LASIK sooner.

P
epito’s & Co. is celebrating their año uno (year one) anniversary as the newest coolest restaurant in the SB area. What was once the old El Chico’s is now the new Pepito’s, and these walls have seen lots of fun and made many memorable times.
In celebration of more good times to come, Pepito’s introduces their new inventive lunch menu featuring delicious dishes and a Special Lunchtime Happy Hour. Their new menu options are a real crowd-pleaser that will leave you craving for more. Pepito’s new menu expresses their slight twist on the traditional Tex-Mex, making them a leader in Nouveau Mexicana Cuisine. Craving an explosion of flavor?! Come try their new Puffy Volcano Taco, a tasty flour tortilla hollowed out and filled with your choice of chicken, pork, or ground beef, piled up high on top of rice and beans, served with your choice of dressing on the side. Many of their original menu entrees are still available such as their signature dish, the infamous Cactus Jack Burger. The Cactus Jack Burger is an 8 oz hamburger steak topped with a creamy, melty mixture of nopales (Opuntia cacti), mushrooms and cheese served on a sizzling hot skillet with onions, bell peppers, and rice and beans as a side. One of the more impressive accomplishments this year is what Pepito’s has done with fajitas. There are five choices to choose from: steak, chicken, spicy brisket, ribeye, and carnitas. If fajitas were judged by their sizzle and flavor, then Pepito’s is the winner, hands down. One cannot live on food alone, and Pepito’s is very proud of their signature heavenly elixirs. Pepitos is now offering Lunchtime Happy Hour Specials featuring their mind-blowing margaritas for those looking to complement their meal.
