KRYSTAL KELLER

BREAKING BARRIERS IN MULTI-BUSINESSES It’s no secret that construction is one of the most maledominated professions in the world. And while women are underrepresented in the trades, statistics show that more women are joining the construction industry. Krystal Keller is a testament that women can be successful and transition to several different roles in construction.

A resident of Gloster, Keller grew up in Keithville and graduated from Southwood High School. She started her career in the plumbing business. After years of honing her trade, she accepted a position working in the construction/remodeling industry. Sixteen years later, in 2020, Keller knew she had the experience and confidence to strike out on her own, so she opened her first business, Designer Products & Installation.

“I do a lot of investor work for flippers,” Keller explains.

“I do a lot of insurance claims for State Farm and Liberty Mutual. Also, local banks will call me for HELOCS, which are like home improvement loans.”

Keller says “from time to time, banks will call me to see if I would like to purchase a foreclosure property. I usually buy them from individuals, not realtors, rehab the home, rent it, and then I usually end up selling them.”

During Designer Product’s first year, despite the Covid year of 2020, it grew substantially. Therefore, Keller decided to tap into her entrepreneurial drive and open LOL JK Properties, LLC (Laugh Out Loud, Just Kidding), a roll-off dumpster business used by construction sites all over Louisiana. Fast forward 2 years, Keller recently bought 21 dumpsters bringing her total to 50. Keller forecasts more growth potential with LOL JK Properties.

Keller did not stop there, she recently opened a used car dealership, Drive Now Pre-Owned, located on Hearne Ave. “A car salesman had refused to sell me 2 trucks I needed. I told him, “Well, either I can buy from you, or I can be your competition,” said Keller. She also enlisted two other people as co-owners and purchased a mobile home park, Hidden Acres Estates, which is currently undergoing renovations. These new ventures are doing great!

In addition to her businesses, Keller donates her time to volunteer work. “I do a lot with Every Warriors, an organization that seeks to give support to servicemen and veterans.”

Why does she do it all? “I feel like I’m providing a lot of employees with a good life. It’s knowing you can take care of other people’s families.” For Keller, the sky’s the limit!

Goodman Gala Sci-Port Discovery Center hosted The Goodman Gala to unveil the newly renovated Goodman IMAX Dome Theater and to honor Sylvia Goodman, who was instrumental in the development of Sci-Port. Cotillion President’s Announcement Party The Cotillion Club President’s Announcement Party was held at the Shreveport Club. Ellen Soffer “Pink Sky” An Artist Reception for Ellen Soffer: Pink Sky was held at Artspace. The exhibition of more than 60 colorful new works is presented by the Shreveport Regional Arts Council and curated by Professor of Art and Humanities at Bossier Parish Community College, Kelly McDade. The Northwest Louisiana Artist Ellen Soffer is well known for her brilliant use of bright and powerful colors. Soffer has always had a passion for color and said, “My intention is to capture the impressions and sensations left behind from dreams, emotions, or emotions, or memories without being limited to the specific details of the events, leaving room for viewer participation and interpretation.”

Created in 1980 through a joint effort by a local arts organization and the City of Bossier, the Bossier Arts Council continues to partner with the city in providing excellence in the arts for citizens and visitors. With a focus on expanding arts opportunities in community theatre, visual arts, festivals and exhibits, arts education for children

better world. Believing that funding for arts organizations, such as the Bossier Arts Council, is essential is an important first step in helping sustain its mission. The newly appointed Pope steps into the role of executive director full of enthusiasm for the future of the Bossier Arts Council and the East Bank District and Plaza.

YMCA Traditional and new initiatives by the local YMCA are a boon to the community.

J

effery Goodman grew up in Shreveport. He attended Montessori, Southfield Elementary, St. Mark’s, Caddo Middle Magnet and Captain Shreve High School.

He watched his mom, Sylvia Goodman, become very involved in the community, including her efforts to launch Sci-Port.

But with all his background, Goodman still found he had a lot to learn when he launched the YMCA of Northwest Louisiana’s latest community initiative — a series of public forums and weekly podcasts.

“I’m getting my PhD on ShreveportBossier,” Goodman said. “I am learning about things in the past I never knew.

I’m becoming aware of people doing interesting things in the present I wasn’t aware of. It’s giving me different ideas or perspectives I hadn’t considered before.”

The podcast, “Shreveport-Bossier: My City, My Community, My Home,” began about a year ago with the goal to “create more awareness around the positive aspects of our community.”

The episodes feature discussions with local entrepreneurs, community leaders, nonprofit organizations, and more.

BY SCOTT ANDERSON The public forums have included a forum with Shreveport mayoral candidates, presentations on philanthropy and economic development, a special screening of the Providence House documentary “Shelter from the Storm,” and a lecture by world-renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.

It’s all part of what Goodman calls the YMCA’s “expanded mission.”

“We’re for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility,” he said. “This is the third component of that. If you look at Ys all over the country, they are doing that. “Ys are very autonomous throughout the country. In different parts of the country, they are involved with homelessness, poverty, crime, people who are struggling. Ys step up in

space for us to play in. Every time I publish a podcast, or we do one of these events, I’m waiting for the backlash. I am waiting for people to say, ‘You are out of your lane.’ The precedent isn’t here. It makes sense and seems appropriate, but it’s not something we have historically done.”

Goodman and Lash both know the public perception of the YMCA as a local “swim and gym.” Goodman grew up playing youth sports at the Broadmoor Y. Lash and his family have been involved for years with teaching classes and summer camps at the YMCA facilities, including the old Camp Forbing. Goodman said the leadership at the YMCA recognizes that as its footprint in the community grows, so does its responsibility.

We’ve done that, too. This is a broader way of using our resources and, using this incredible facility we have, to give back in a profound way.”

The impetus for the new initiatives grew from a conversation Goodman had with Bubba Rasberry in December 2021 as the two men walked through the YMCA on Knight Street, looking at banners with the names of supporters of the Y’s annual fundraising campaign.

“He made some comment like, ‘I recognize all those names, which isn’t very encouraging to me,’” Goodman said. “We started having conversations about the community work he has done through the years. It very quickly dawned on me that other people should be privy to these conversations.

I was having conversations that I felt would have value outside the walls of the Y or outside the walls of my office.

It just got me thinking.”

From those early thoughts came the idea to host the forum on philanthropy. Goodman recruited his mom and Rasberry to sit on the panel.

He then went to Kristi Gustavson at Community Foundation for recommendations for other panelists.

They recruited former Shreveport City Councilman John Nickelson and Wanda Thomas from Ochsner LSU Health. On Feb. 24, 2022, the YMCA hosted its first panel discussion, titled “Why Give to Shreveport.”

“It went really well,” Goodman said. “I was happy with the spirit of it. Gary (Lash, CEO of the Y) and I talked, and

I said, ‘I’d like to do more of these.

But it takes a lot of work. At best, we could do one a quarter. We should do something that has more frequency.’”

That’s when the podcast was born.

The first guest was Al Childs, managing partner of Vintage Realty.

They discussed Childs’ inspirations and aspirations for the community.

Since then, the podcast has covered a variety of topics with local residents from all walks of life. But Goodman is careful to ensure the podcast is about growing the community, not growing the YMCA. “It’s been important to me to not have an ulterior motive,” he said. “In 90 percent of the podcasts, the Y doesn’t come up at all. That’s not what I am seeking. How can we build a better community? How do we address our low self-esteem as a community? How do we address community apathy and what we need to do better? If you listed the top 10 goals of this project, the goal of raising more money and getting more donors would be at nine or 10.”

With the first panel discussion under their belts and the podcast in motion, Goodman and the YMCA leadership set their sights on another lofty goal.

“We can’t add property and not add import,” Goodman said. “That’s what I am trying to infuse in all of this. Let’s not be on the Monopoly board, just adding property. Let’s add value every time our portfolio grows.”

That growing portfolio includes some more traditional missions for the YMCA. The BHP YMCA represents phase 1 of 3 phases that will comprise the 150-acre campus that will be a regional beacon of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

“We knew fairly early on, after the first panel, that we wanted to host a mayoral forum,” Goodman said. “We had never done anything like that.

We knew it would be hard to have the credibility to pull that off.

“I still feel that way. I don’t know if we’ve overcome it. It’s a different

Little League was leasing adjacent to the Y’s Knight Street facility. The Y is using funds from the Louisiana Capital Outlay Bill to improve the complex. The project will increase the number and sizes of the fields, add artificial turf to the infields and create a venue that can host travel baseball and softball tournaments.

The project is estimated to cost $7.5 million. The estimated economic impact in year one is $5 million. It could host 20 tournaments just in the first year, bringing 220,000 visitors to Shreveport, according to the YMCA’s estimates. The YMCA has raised $6 million, Goodman said, and aims to raise the remainder of the funds in the next six months. Construction is planned to begin this summer.

Phase 3 will be an Outdoor Education Center that includes 100 acres of lake, marsh and wetlands that will showcase the natural wonders of our region.

And a new YMCA at a new location is coming soon. They received a sizable donation from an anonymous donor allowing them to build a new Y at Camp Forbing Town Center.

“The donor insisted that it be named after the Lash Family for all they

have done to grow the YMCA in our community. We are very excited to bring a YMCA to the southern part of our city and expect the new branch to be open around September of this year,” says Goodman.

Moving forward, Goodman wants to see both the podcasts and the community events grow. He has plans to host a forum on juvenile crime in the near future. He also encourages others with a message to share with the community to contact him about partnering with the YMCA for a forum.

That’s how the events with Dr. Andrews and Providence House came together.

“We have a close relationship with Ochsner,” Goodman said. “They brought that idea to us. I said, ‘That’s awesome. We’d like to do that. Can we fold it into the larger umbrella of this new initiative?’

“Same with Providence House. I am on a nonprofit advisory board at LSUS with Vernie Howard. I talked about the initiative. She talked about the documentary. I said, ‘If you want to show it at the Y, we can make it happen.’ About a month later she called and said she’d like to do that.

“I’d love for there to be a 50-50 kind of mix between things we come up with and things where people say, ‘The Y does that really well.’”

His goal for the podcast is to be “a mirror to this community and tell the community’s story from as many angles as possible.”

New podcast episodes post every Thursday on the Northwest Louisiana YMCA YouTube channel. Audio-only versions are available on all podcast platforms. Video replays of the forums also are available on the YouTube channel.

Whether it’s the podcast, the forum, or the YMCA’s more traditional roles, the mission is the same, Goodman said.

“I feel like we have two or three or four or five communities running in different directions,” he said. “That’s a lot of lost energy. If they are running in the same direction more often, that would lead to some positive results. The goals are the same — to be a unifying force. Be an educational force. A force of positivity on the community that tries to make this community better.”

In times of change, some things remain the same.

pring is well underway in our region and with warmer temperatures this is the best time to be in the garden. It’s time to head outdoors to clean out and prepare our garden beds for the growing months ahead. Here are a few gardening tips to launch the spring season successfully:

Do a spring inspection: Now is the time to see what damage has been done by the brutal cold we had in December. While most of the plants should be budding out, some may not have made it through the freeze. If that is the case, go ahead and pull those dead plants out now.

Inspect your hardscape – walls, fences, sheds, gutters. Have any shifted, bowed or rotted? Now is the time to repair any damage before working on the beds.

This is a good time to plan and build new raised gardens, widen existing ones, and tidy up your beds’ edging.

Test your garden soil: Experts recommend testing your garden soil every year. You may learn your soil is very high in phosphorous, so you would want to avoid adding fertilizers with phosphorous. You may find out your soil is too alkaline, but want to grow acid-loving shrubs like azaleas and hydrangeas which would mean adding aluminum sulfate to your soil.

Feed your soil: Once you know what your garden soil needs based on the test results, implement those changes for the best possible growing season. It is also good practice to top-dress the soil with an inch or two of compost or a good manure in early spring.

March is a good time to fertilize most shrubs and trees. Although, you want to wait to fertilize any spring flowering shrubs until the flowers have started to fade. Non-flowering shrubs can be fertilized now. Most ornamental shrubs and trees like a slow-release, well-balanced ‘shrub and tree’ type fertilizer. If you are unsure what to use, ask your local nursery professional or extension agent.

If you didn’t feed your roses in February, March is also a good time to feed roses.

Fertilize established perennials after new growth appears with a good flower fertilizer or organic plant food.

It’s time to prepare the veggie garden for spring planting. You will need to work into the soil a half inch layer of composted organic matter such as composted manures to feed your freshly planted vegetables.

Do some pruning Our growing area is Zone 8b which means most pruning should be completed by now.

Perennials should have any old, dead growth removed as soon as possible.

Prune your roses immediately if you have not already done so. Pruning this late will not hurt your rose bushes but may delay blooming.

If you haven’t already done so, prune

your crape myrtles, but only if they are still dormant and have yet to leaf out.

Groundcovers and ornamental grasses can be cut back now. This includes mondo grass, liriope (monkey grass), and pampas grass.

Now is also the time to prune back any plants damaged by the winter storm. Woody plants such as azaleas, camellias, and Ligustrum took a hit.

These plants, although normally evergreen, likely lost most of their leaves. The brown leaves have fallen off by now, and most of the woody stems are green and very much alive.

You may have cane dieback, which

will need to be pruned. To find out how much dieback your plant has, use a sharp blade (or your fingernail) to lightly skin the bark to reveal the wood underneath. Start at a branch top and observe the color under the skinned area. Damaged wood will be brown.

Work your way down until the skinned area becomes green. This indicates healthy tissue. Prune off the tissue above the green area.

Shrubs Shrubs can be planted now.

Vegetables For your vegetable garden, continue direct sowing seeds of lettuce, garden greens, beans, squash, melons, and okra. Seedlings of tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants should be in the garden now. Be prepared to provide frost protection if a cold snap threatens.

Fruits Now is a great time to plant strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, pomegranate, and other fruit trees.

Perennials These flowering or foliage plants return year after year once planted. There are many varieties that do well here and bloom in the spring, while others bloom in the summer, fall or even winter. Some favorite perennials to plant now include peony, garden phlox, Lenten Rose, daylily, yarrow, Shasta daisy, and salvia. Not only do these grow well in our area, but they also multiply and can be divided and moved to another bed or shared with a friend.

Taking the time to complete a few essential spring garden tasks will bring you benefits for the rest of the season. Plus, it just feels amazing to get back outside and into the garden!

HREVEPORT, LA. This nostalgic, pastel yellow home is the perfect example of the American Foursquare—a style that came to define so many South Highland homes during the early 20th century. By that time, the ornate Victorian style of the late-1800s had run its course, giving way to houses designed with more symmetry, clarity, and simplicity of plan.

The foursquare plan was simple. It was a two-story structure organized around four large, square rooms on each floor. Normally, the home would sit high above the street, and on the first floor there was an entry hall, kitchen, living room and dining room—with three bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor. The decorated Victorian gable disappeared, replaced by a hip roof with the slope coming down to all four sides of the house. A large dormer, or sometimes a gable, would protrude from the roof slope. Victorian “gingerbread” also gave way to reserved Classical details such as the Ionic columns on the front porch, which hearken back to Greek temples of three thousand years earlier.

Carolyn Murphy Thompson is the type of house romantic who believes old homes have souls. This

featured home was originally built by the Naus family in the early 1920s—and until 2016, the only owner.

However, as generations moved on and seasons of life changed, they put the home up for sale. When Carolyn noticed it was on the market, she saw more than an older home in a historic neighborhood. She saw great potential to design a home where memories would be made, and stories would be told. To manifest her imagination, she knew she needed to go big. And so big—and colorful—is what she decided to do.

To help with her vision, Carolyn tapped Rand Knicely to oversee the remodel project, and help preserve the home’s historic details. Her main goal was to make the layout and style functional for her and her husband, Graham Thompson. Knicely is an architect and contractor who specializes in historic renovations, whose respectful approach to historic homes has won him numerous accolades throughout Northwest Louisiana. “I have worked for the Murphy family for many years and their credo has always been quality, function, and aesthetic. The challenge with this project was to accomplish these goals while maintaining the character of the existing home.” Carolyn was sure that the home was in good hands.

When it came to Carolyn’s imagination, the layout of the first floor—including the open kitchen and den—didn’t change much. But she did want to tweak the spaces to create more of an “open floor plan,” which was accomplished by combining the living and dining rooms. And while the remodel may seem traditional, it embodies a kind and formal style—as it now looks more crisp and strong. Simple details were employed to the

interiors to keep the home from feeling too formal or too heavy.

To better help with this guidance, Carolyn turned to her mother, Peggy Murphy, for her expertise in interior design. Under Peggy’s guidance, the two embarked on a preservation-minded remodel pulling from Carolyn’s personal love of art, literature, and travel.

“The home is fresh and reflects a youthfulness for its inhabitants,” admits Peggy, a Professor at LSU Health Shreveport, who “lightly” dabbles in interior design when not consumed by academia. “The remodel emitted a traditional, homey feel, while the mediums and textures add a modern edge.

This was all done to help in retaining the original character the Naus family created when they originally built the home nearly one hundred years ago.”

Peggy openly admits her design sense comes from her worldly travels— something she did both as a child and has only increased as an adult. This sense of adventure and intrigue is something she instilled in Carolyn as well. Thus, she mixed vintage and modern furnishings, with a smattering of geometric-

patterned pieces to create colorful compositions. The combination of styles builds upon what she described as the house’s “quiet beauty.”

“I love creating a collection with special and one-of-akind pieces from all over the world and spanning various time periods,” she said. “For Carolyn, the aim was to create a space full of dimension without losing any details along the way. The fun thing about this design is there were no rules, so to speak. When it comes to proportion and sizes, this is the perfect mix of different elements of design.”

There are books—which illuminates Carolyn’s love of literature— everywhere, literally from the floor to the ceiling.

In addition to working with existing furniture, Peggy helped source art to fill out her daughter’s exquisite art collection, which includes the likes of Vanicka Terhune, Lauren Ross Simmons, Lisa Brandeburg, Henry Goodrich, and James Hunter. “The den serves multiple functions,” states Peggy. “It’s a place to read, or watch TV from the sofa, or even entertain guests. It’s a favorite spot for the entire family.”

When it comes to the home’s furnishings, many items were found after scouring furniture sales, antique stores, and consignment shops. “I enjoy the art of consignment,” admits Peggy. “All the furniture has been collected over time—salvaged and reused or reupholstered. The rule is—if you like it, just buy it, because it’s going to find a place somewhere.” Michelle Booth, of Milling Around Interiors, was also tapped for collaboration on fabrics for upholstery and drapery design.

And while the den may be Peggy’s favorite room, she does admit there is something both striking and sentimental about the addition of the new outdoor room. Its large brick fireplace creates a focal point, adds a heat source, and visually links the space with the home. The sofa and chairs create the perfect spot for lounging around the fireplace, making this space usable year-round. It has a lighthearted and celebratory feel.

“The outdoor room—with its vaulted ceiling—is full of distinctive pieces and was built to be an entertaining area. The longer you look, the more detail you’ll see.

In the end, Peggy was able to seamlessly blend her design style with her daughter’s goal of creating a welcoming haven bespoke with style and intrigue. “My desire for this house was for visitors to know who my husband and I are as people: our values, our influences, our passions, and our roots. From architecture and design, we were blessed with a dynamic team who executed that goal seamlessly,” says Carolyn.

an a simple change in the delivery of care impact patients’ health? With its mission—to extend comprehensive primary healthcare and pharmacy services at no cost to uninsured patients with chronic illness who otherwise often forgo routine medical care because of a lack of resources— the MLK Health Center & Pharmacy in Shreveport strives to make an impact on the wellness of their community and the people they serve through group medical visits and patientcentered care.

Shreveport, LA. The Martin Luther King Health Center, located on Olive Street, is a free/charitable health center and pharmacy that serves over

1,500 low-income patients, many who are uninsured and underinsured with chronic disease. The Center was founded in 1986 by LSUHSC School of Medicine Resident, Dr. Robert H. Jackson, and the late Sister Margaret McCaffery. Today, the center serves as a safety net for patients that do not have the resources

to obtain quality health care and needed medications. They play an important role in Louisiana’s medical history by holding the first Charitable Pharmacy permit issued by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. Today, the center and pharmacy provide services to people in their community.

BACKGROUND. Diabetes, heart disease and other chronic medical conditions are costly, requiring medication and multiple checkups each year and are especially prevalent for those that lack health insurance and often, access to adequate health care. Many of the risk factors contributing to these conditions are preventable through lifestyle changes—this is prompting health care providers across the country to rethink their approach to chronic disease care, prevention, and patient engagement.

The MLK Health Center & Pharmacy has recognized this shift and adopted a unique scheduling and innovative care delivery model that promotes access, continuity of care and a true patient-centered approach. They have also implemented a diabetes prevention program targeting patients at-risk for developing type 2 diabetes. They provide a great example of the quality of care being provided by free clinics in our country—a critical sector of the U.S. safety net.

INNOVATIVE CARE DELIVERY MODEL. One step into the MLK Health Center & Pharmacy waiting room, adorned with murals painted by local artists and educational tools for patients, it becomes clear that this health care organization serves as a true health home for the people they serve. One major distinction is that patients greet each other by name in the waiting room. They know each other because, sharing a diagnosis of diabetes, their appointments are grouped together. Jordan Ring Scroggs, Executive Director of MLK, explained that the center, under the leadership of progressive medical director, Dr. Robert Jackson, has always endeavored to enhance the quality of care they provide and proactively engage patients with chronic disease.

“We are always striving for ways to better serve our patients and improve their outcomes. And setting up clinic days for patients—having patients with the same condition come in regularly as teams with assigned providers—is just another way to ensure that patients aren’t slipping through the cracks and are getting the care they need.”

attend their visit as a group—all the patients arrive at the same time for their appointments so they can connect and socialize. Patients receive care from their assigned provider individually. Each patient has their labs and diagnostics done on site. Their care team, which includes a physician and a nurse practitioner (often advanced practice nursing students under the supervision of faculty), ensures that patients get all the recommended care for diabetics. If necessary, staff refer patients to on-site specialists such as an endocrinologists or nephrologists. The center has a well-stocked charitable pharmacy to ensure their patients have access to critical medications at no cost.

Patients also join in health education and information sharing sessions.

Staff are trained in motivational interviewing and work to set health goals with patients.

This group appointment approach has an impact. “We have shown that our approach produces enhanced patient understanding of their conditions and improves health related behaviors,”

claims Scroggs. “We have also shown statistically significant improvement in a critical measure of diabetes control. Other outcomes related research is underway.”

Beyond creating a community inside the center, the staff works to foster connections outside as well. They have a robust volunteer program that includes nursing students and faculty from their local medical and nursing schools. Volunteers organize and participate in community wellness events, health screenings, mobile health clinics, emergency response efforts, and make it a point to collaborate with other care providers and groups in the communities they serve.

This account of group visits in action highlights the impact this type of approach has on patients and their families. Simply providing an opportunity for patients to connect and share with others in similar situations can boost the feeling of humanity in medicine and improve the overall experience of care for those who would otherwise be underserved.

The Shreveport Bar Center is owned by the Shreveport Bar Foundation and houses the offices of the Pro Bono Project and the Shreveport Bar Association and others. In 2022, a capital campaign retired the debt on the Bar Center. Foundation President Larry Pettiette also oversaw the

addition of a new roof and parking lot to secure the building for the future.

The Shreveport Bar Center provides opportunities for growth and development within the Bar. The building provides members of the Bar with the opportunity for networking, socializing, and a place to hold events for SBA, Justinian, SBF, and CLE. Attorneys from all over the state utilize the mediation suites as a neutral meeting ground for resolving complex issues.

The Shreveport Bar Foundation has partnered with numerous organizations to expand its efforts to provide services throughout Northwest Louisiana.

The SBF operates the Pro Bono Project and the Legal Representation for Victims of Domestic Violence Program (“LRVDV”).

The Pro Bono Project provides free legal assistance by volunteer attorneys in civil matters for qualified indigent and low-income Caddo and Bossier Parish residents. Lawyers in private practice volunteer through the Pro Bono Project to take cases for individual clients who qualify based on Federal Poverty Income Guidelines. The Ask A Lawyer Clinic is held monthly at the Bar Center, providing easy access for citizens to obtain free legal advice and consultation from pro bono volunteer attorneys. The clinic is staffed with volunteer attorneys to assist the local community with free legal advice. Without this service,

these individuals may not have an opportunity to speak with an attorney and obtain advice about resolving their legal issues.

The primary focus of the LRVDV program is to provide legal representation to women, men, and children who are victims of domestic violence to obtain protective orders and other related orders involving child custody and child support. The Bar Center provides a safe and private environment for clients to meet with our staff and attorney.

David White is the current President of the SBF, and the foundation has a staff of five: Executive Director Dana Southern, Staff Attorneys Mary Winchell and Audrius Reed, Pro Bono Coordinator Lucy Espree, Outreach and Marketing Coordinator Linnae Magyar, and Paralegal Callie Jones.

Together the two service organizations have made a positive contribution to the Bench, Bar, and community of Shreveport-Bossier.

In February 2022, Gordon Mosley joined the firm. Gordon Mosley is an attorney who focuses on personal injury, family, and criminal law. bonee Rhodes Norris was raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. A product of the Cherokee-Highland Park neighborhood, she grew up in humble beginnings.

She graduated from Caddo Parish Magnet High School and received her Bachelor of Criminal Justice from Louisiana State University in Shreveport. Norris then obtained her Juris Doctorate from Southern University Law Center.

Norris amassed a wealth of experience in the legal field before starting her law firm. Norris served as a law clerk for the Louisiana Attorney General and the Louisiana Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

Norris also worked for a non-profit law firm, advocating for the rights of low-income and elderly residents in North Louisiana. Norris then transitioned to the for-profit sector, where she worked for a private law firm practicing in the areas of criminal defense, estate planning, personal injury, and municipal bonds.

“They were looking for my older brother because someone had broken into the neighborhood store and stolen cookies.

My brother was snatched out of the bed and taken to jail without any evidence,” she recounts.

My mother—a single parent of six—was helpless and could not afford to make the bail. My brother was only released from jail after someone broke into the store again a few days later. Because of his bad experiences in Allendale as a child, my brother left home for New York, never to return.

My family’s negative encounter with law enforcement caused me to fear police officers. Moreover, I refuse to steal because jail was no place for me. I grew up wanting to change the stigma of police officers. Consequently, a probation and parole officer for the state of Louisiana was my first job after college and later law school. My desire was to be a good example of law enforcement, help reform criminal offenders, and to lend a helping hand for second chances. My firm helped raise over 200,000 for Shreveport police officers body cameras to help keep officers accountable.

Sometimes poverty or injustice keeps us from doing what is right; however, I was taught that everyone deserves respect and dignity. Injustice sometimes was a way of life in our community. My mom always taught me to take a negative and turn bad things into positives, and to stay on the right side of the law.

That’s what I’ve always tried to do in my career. Having honesty and integrity has resulted in great outcomes in just about every legal case be it civil or criminal.

olor infuses all aspects of our lives. Just as music does, colors can evoke emotions and take people on a journey. Each color has a different personality or a unique story to tell, depending on who is doing the looking. Color combinations also create different associations—a place, a time period, or a memory. Brilliant, powerful, emotive color is the driving force behind the Shreveport Regional Arts Council’s first artspace exhibition of 2023, Ellen Soffer: Pink Sky, curated by Kelly McDade, Bossier Parish Community College Professor of Art & Humanities.

It is an exhibition of more than 60 new paintings created in the past four years (2019-2022), including works of gouache and watercolor on paper, as well as large scale oil paintings on canvas that feature vibrant color, organic shapes, and dynamic patterns. The exhibition will remain at artspace until April 8, 2023.

Soffer creates on canvas and paper using mainly oils, but also gouache, acrylic, and watercolor. She has had solo exhibitions in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Texas, and Georgia and has been featured in group exhibitions including Mary Tomás Gallery in Dallas and the Longview Museum of Fine Arts, among many other venues. She is a recipient of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council’s Visual Arts Fellowship and has been awarded residencies from the Ragsdale Foundation and Skowhegan. Soffer earned her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art.

Robert L. Pincus, who has been an art critic, author, book critic, and art historian for more than four decades and was the staff art critic of The San Diego Union-Tribune for 25 years has contributed an essay to a full color catalog available in conjunction with Soffer’s exhibition. heumatoid arthritis (RA) affects 1.3 million Americans, representing about 1% of the US population. The Arthritis Foundation estimates that the global prevalence of RA is 0.5-1% in developed countries. RA is an autoimmune disorder and occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks one’s own body's tissues.

This affects the lining of one’s joints, causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity. Often, there is pain and swelling of the fingers as well as prolonged stiffness especially in the morning. RA develops gradually over many weeks to months. While it usually begins between ages 40 and 60, a similar disease can present in teenage children and is called Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.

RA is diagnosed with medical history, physical examination, and blood testing. Blood testing includes markers of inflammation (Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C reactive protein) and antibodies (Rheumatoid

factor and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody). X-rays of hands and feet can show weak bones with damage, or erosions in certain areas. One must see a rheumatologist early to get RA in good control.

Treatment of RA has greatly improved during the last three decades.

Initial treatment of RA includes pain medications which are not disease-modifying drugs. Another method of initial treatment includes

steroids taken by mouth to control inflammation in joints in RA. Steroids are associated with many side effects with long-term use, including weak bones (osteoporosis), diabetes, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, dead bone (avascular necrosis), increased risks of stroke and heart disease. Steroids should only be used initially in RA management for rapid response, but it is advisable to taper quickly to the lowest effective dose and stop within a few weeks.

Rheumatoid arthritis should be managed by disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) as soon as possible to prevent irreversible damage. Usually, patients are given DMARDs like Methotrexate, Hydroxychloroquine, Sulfasalazine and leflunomide. These medications have been used for many years to control RA but have not been successful in achieving full remission (control of disease) in all patients.

The most significant improvement in RA treatment has been the discovery of biologics. Biologics target certain chemicals or cells in the immune system which are causing damage to joints. These medications have made remission (full control of disease) possible and have made a great impact on improving quality of life in RA. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, steroid injections in the joints and weight control can also

have a beneficial effect on RA. There is significant interest about changing diet in RA to see improvement, and studies have shown improvement with fish oil capsules along with continued medications.

The Center of Excellence of Arthritis and Rheumatology (CEAR) at LSU Health Shreveport has been actively involved in many research projects involving use of biologics in RA. We are participating in many ongoing drug trials to discover more biologics for treatment of this chronic and disabling disease.

Because of a lack of availability of good biologic medications in the past, RA patients have suffered from chronic deformities and disabilities. With the advancement of biologics treatment, the patient has full control of their disease with almost no irreversible damage to their joints. These are fascinating and encouraging times for patients and rheumatologists, as this treatment has had excellent clinical response.

If you or a loved one is experiencing these joint symptoms, consult with your doctor as soon as possible, and you may request a rheumatology referral. An early referral to a specialist is key to prevent irreversible joint damage and control the disease with prompt management.

9 K9 K VETERANS DAY

arch 13th is National K9 Veterans Day, a day set aside to commemorate the service and sacrifices of the American military and working dogs throughout history. Dogs have been used in battle for thousands of years, dating back to ancient civilizations. They were employed as sentries, messengers, and attack animals. In World War I and World War II, dogs were trained as stretcher-bearers, messengers, and mine detectors. During the Vietnam War, dogs were used as sentries and scouts. In modern warfare, military working dogs are trained to detect improvised explosive devices, drugs, and weapons. They are highly valued for their bravery, loyalty, and ability to work in hazardous environments.

The exact origin of National K9 Veterans Day is not clear, but it is believed to have started in the United States in the early 2000s as a way to honor K9 Veterans and pay tribute to the thousands of dogs that have served in various capacities in the military and law enforcement. These dogs serve alongside their human handlers and play an important role in military operations and have saved countless lives through their skills in search and rescue, explosive detection, and much more. Like human veterans, K9 veterans have served their country and have made sacrifices to protect human lives and national security, and they deserve to be celebrated and honored.

Ř Organize or participate in local events honoring military and police dogs, such as parades, memorials, or fundraising events. Ř Reach out to your local police department or military base to see if they have any events planned to celebrate National K9 Veterans Day.

Tips for navigating a new family dynamic.

T

he family dynamic has changed drastically over the past seven decades. In the 1960s, it was the norm for children to be born into a two parent/first marriage household.

According to Pew Research, the number of traditional families dropped in the 1980 to about 61%. Today, that number is less than half.

Typical families of the new millennium are a vast mixture of anything but traditional. One of the most common family types is the blended family.

Blended families are family units where one or both parents have children from previous relationships, and they decide to bring their two families together to form unit.

Although making the decision to blend two families can be a wonderful experience, it does come with its share of obstacles. It’s not to say that blended families can’t work, but it is a delicate situation that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Forbes reported that there is a 74% failure rate for second marriages due to the stressors that many blended families face. Though every family is different, there are some basic things that every blended family can take into consideration when figuring out what works best for them. Here are tips for approaching the blended family dynamic: 👤👤👤👤 Control your words and actions.

We can’t change how others act, but we can control how we react to their words and actions. If disagreements occur with an ex, refrain from fighting or arguing in front of the children. Try getting all the adults together to have a cordial one-on-one about any issues that may exist and how everyone can come together on one page for the children. At the end of the day, the happiness and health of the children involved is a top

priority. You all should make the best decisions that positively impact your family dynamic. 👤👤👤👤 Help children become comfortable with the changes in their own time and way.

When mom or dad begins to date again, that alone can be a huge change for children. So, imagine what a new marriage can feel like for them.

Change is hard sometimes for adults to grasp and children are no different.

Among other things, they may feel a sense of loyalty to their parents.

As the stepparent/bonus parent, it’s important to build a rapport with the children, but remember to let them set the pace. Parents should encourage bonding with bonus moms and dads, but they should never force these changes on the children. Give them the time they need to adjust to their new dynamics. 👤👤👤👤 Set and respect boundaries.

One key thing to remember when forming a blended family is that these two families had their own way of life before taking the leap to merge with one another. There was a code

and culture already in place which should be respected. Though things will change to accommodate the new family unit, some things may remain the same. 👤👤👤👤 Check your own heart and mind before committing to a blended family.

Forming a blended family can be beautiful, but it is important to remember that there are children and feelings all through the fabric of the blended family. Before you commit to anything, you should make sure that you are in a mature place mentally and emotionally for the children’s sake.

SB GOOD TO KNOW SHREVEPORT CITY JUDGE NAMED PRESIDENT OF STATEWIDE ASSOCIATION On Jan. 26, the Louisiana Supreme Court announced the officers for the Louisiana City/ Parish Judges Association.

The president is Shreveport City Court Judge Brian H. Barber who has been serving as city judge since he was elected in 2014.

Formed in 1987, the Louisiana City/Parish Judges Association is a non-profit organization created to operate for educational purposes by aiding in the advance of the science of jurisprudence, fostering and promoting beneficial legislation affecting the administration of justice in City, Parish, and Municipal Courts in Louisiana.

The association’s goal is to prevent or discourage the enactment of legislation inimical thereto or detrimental thereof while cooperating with National, State and Local Bar Associations and other Judicial Organizations in matters of mutual interest.

SHREVEPORT MAYOR TACKLES BLIGHT The City of Shreveport and Mayor Tom Arceneaux are committed to cleaning up our city. Upon recommendation by the Department of Property Standards, Mayor Arceneaux signed 35 demolition letters on Wednesday, February 8th.

“Blight, if allowed to stay, turns into more blight. As it spreads, crime spreads,” said Mayor Arceneaux. “The issues are tied together, and that’s why my administration is taking a proactive approach that begins with these demolitions.”

Next, Property Standards will ensure that those properties’ ownership has not changed. If it hasn’t, demolition will begin within 30 days. Once demolished, Property Standards will assess the costs involved, and the City will issue a lien against the property. Property Standards has been instructed to take an aggressive approach when it comes to addressing blight by issuing citations and having violators appear in Environmental Court.

DINNER THEATRE COMING TO SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER

Shreveport Little Theatre announces that it will add dinner theatre to its entertainment offerings, according to SLT’s managing and artistic director Dr. Robert Darrow.

The opening production of SLT Dinner Theatre will be Sylvia, a comedy by A. R. Gurney, about a streetsmart mixture of Lab and poodle, Sylvia, who becomes a major bone of contention between a husband and wife.

Sylvia offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, the wife, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. The production will be held at LeBossier Event Center, 4000 Industrial Drive, Bossier City, Louisiana.

SLT Dinner Theatre’s inaugural production, Sylvia, will be in collaboration with BPCC’s Theatre department and directed by Dr. Ray Scott Crawford.

This production of Sylvia received numerous awards in November at the Texas Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

SLT Board President Marianne Archibald says, “I see the SLT Dinner Theatre as providing our community theatre with increased viability, new patrons, a more diverse audience base--from both sides of the Red River, and hopefully new revenue for our non-profit organization.”

Despite the amusing premise and the absurdity of a person playing the role of a dog, Sylvia is a comedy meant for adults, with mature language and humor.

Children under the age of nine will not be permitted in the theatre for this production. Guests celebrating a special occasion should notify the box office to receive special recognition at the performance.

n March 17th of each year, millions mark the traditional feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Here's everything you need to know about past celebrations—from the first ever St. Patrick’s Day parade to the history behind the traditional dish of corned beef and cabbage.

WHO WAS SAINT PATRICK?

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born Maewyn Succat to a Christian family in Roman Britain in the late fourth century AD. Shortly before he was 16, Patrick was captured by a group of Irish raiders who took him to Ireland and forced him into slavery.

Six years later he escaped home to Britain. Believing he had been called

by God to Christianize Ireland, he later

returned to Ireland as a missionary of the Catholic Church. He played an important role in converting the native Irish to Christianity, travelling around the country performing baptisms and confirmations.

WHEN WAS ST PATRICK’S DAY FIRST CELEBRATED?

By the end of the 7th century, St. Patrick had become a legendary figure and was venerated as a saint—although he was never formally canonized. Legends around St. Patrick, many of which are still told today, include the story that he drove the snakes of Ireland into the sea to their destruction. Natural historians, however, have suggested that there is no evidence of snakes having ever existed in Ireland—as the country was too cold during the Ice Age for reptiles to survive.

It wasn’t until the 1630s that March 17th, the traditional day of St Patrick’s death, was added to the Catholic breviary of as the Feast of St. Patrick. By the late 17th century, Irish people were celebrating the day by wearing crosses, ribbons, or shamrocks—the latter which St. Patrick used to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity to an ‘unbeliever’ by showing them the three-leaved plant with one stalk.

WHY IS ST PATRICK'S DAY LINKED WITH THE COLOR GREEN AND THE SHAMROCK?

Though green dominates the celebrations today, it was the color blue—a shade known as St. Patrick’s blue—that was first associated with the saint. The earliest depictions of St. Patrick show him in blue garments, and the color also appears on ancient Irish flags.

In 1541, when King Henry VIII was declared the first English king of

Ireland, he used a gold Irish harp on a blue flag for the Irish coat of arms. The blue shade also appears on the 18th-century Order of St. Patrick, an order of chivalry created by George III. As the blue symbols became more associated with English rule, green grew in popularity as a symbol of rebellion. During the 1798 Irish Rebellion, the shamrock became a symbol of nationalism and the ‘wearing of the green’ on lapels became regular practice.

WHEN DID THE FIRST ST PATRICK'S DAY PARADE TAKE PLACE?

The first parade has long been believed to be a small celebration

by Irish colonists, held in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1737.

However, in 2018 historian J. Michael Francis of the University of South Florida found evidence to suggest that, in March of 1601, residents of St. Augustine in Spanish Florida gathered together and proceeded through the city’s streets in honor of St. Patrick, who seems to have served as the official ‘protector’ of the city’s maize fields.

WHY IS CORNED BEEF, CABBAGE, AND POTATOES THE TRADITIONAL FARE OF ST PATRICK'S DAY?

When Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated on March 4, 1861, the president chose a meal of mock turtle soup, followed by corned beef and cabbage—a dish traditionally associated with St. Patrick’s Day feasting.

Beef was not traditionally an Irish dish; it was under British rule that the cow came to be farmed for meat. In the era of colonial rule, beef’s prohibitive cost in Ireland meant that it “became synonymous with the well-fed British aristocracy and middle class.” Later, with the invention of ‘corned beef’ in the 17th

century, it was Ireland’s substantially lower salt tax—and not the beef itself—that cemented its reputation as an Irish export.

As large numbers of settlers moved to America and gained greater prosperity, beef was back on the menu. Once Irish Americans popularized St. Patrick’s Day as a celebration, the corned beef and cabbage of their ancestors became the traditional fare of the day.

WHY DOES CHICAGO TURN ITS RIVER GREEN DURING ST PATRICK'S DAY? AND WHEN DID IT START?

Chicago has colored its river green to mark the holiday since 1962. In 1961, sanitation workers realized that the green vegetable dye they used to check for dumped sewage could double as a St Patrick's Day decoration—and so a tradition was born. It reportedly takes 40lbs of dye to achieve the verdant hue, while the color can last from a few hours to two days.

WHAT ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADES?

The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place in America—not in Ireland. It took place in New York City on March 17, 1762, and since that day, cities across the United States have competed for the biggest and best St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

The honor of the shortest parade is held by Hot Springs, Arkansas, where Irish pride is all about staying small. Host of the “World’s Shortest St Patrick’s Day Parade,” Hot Springs holds its annual procession on the 98ft-long Bridge Street, named the “world’s shortest street in everyday use” by Ripley’s Believe It or Not. In true Irish style, the idea for the parade was born over a few drinks at a Bridge Street pub in 2003, with the first marchers taking to the pint-sized street in 2004.

Butter (2 sticks or 1 cup): Salted or unsalted will work.

Marshmallows (2-20 oz bags of marshmallows, reserve 2 cups): Mini ones melt easier. If you’re using large marshmallows, melt on low heat to avoid unnecessary burning.

Salt (1 teaspoon kosher salt): Balances out the sweetness from the marshmallows. If you’re using salted butter, you can leave the extra salt out.

Rice Krispies (8 cups of rice cereal) Green Sprinkles (3/4 cup of green St. Patrick’s Day sprinkles)

Melt your butter & marshmallows: Melt down your butter in a large pot. Add in the marshmallows and cook on medium-low heat until they are melted.

Add in your Rice Krispies: Remove marshmallow mixture from heat and add in rice krispie cereal and mix until they are incorporated.

Sprinkles + Extra Marshmallows: Allow the mixture to cool slightly (this will help the extra marshmallows and sprinkles from melting into the batter), and then add the sprinkles and extra marshmallows.

Mold your Rice Krispie Treats: Line a sheet, pan, or rectangle cake pan with parchment paper and spread out the rice krispie mixture evenly. Top with a bit more sprinkles and cool until hardened. Remove and cut into squares.

You get to choose your favorite box cake brand and, after it’s baked, crumble the whole thing to get started.

¼ white cake (such as a box cake), cooked 2 TBSP cream cheese frosting, soft 8 oz candy melts, green 8 oz candy melts, white 10-count, 6–inch cookie sticks Green and white sprinkles

In a large bowl, crumble your cake.

Add in your cream cheese frosting. Mix well with a hand mixer, spoon, or stand mixer.

3. Divide your cake into 10 sections. With the palm of your hand, round out each portion into a ball shape.

4. Place your cake pops on a sheet pan or plate and place them in the freezer for 15 minutes.

5. While your cake pops are in the freezer, place green candy melts in a medium-sized bowl or coffee mug. Microwave for 30-second intervals until completely melted. Repeat separately with white candy melts.

6. Remove the cake pops from the freezer.

7. Place your cookie stick in the candy melt, then the cake pop. Then add your cake pop to the candy melts. Coat the pop completely with the melt. On the side of the bowl, tap it gently with the stick removing any excess chocolate from the cake pop to create a smooth finish.

8. Place the cake pop on parchment paper or a silicone mat. Immediately add your sprinkles before the chocolate dries.

9. Continue steps 6 – 8 until each cake pop is complete.

There wasn’t so much left as a hymnbook. The only things found of note were the corpses of the pastor and his sometimes secretary, who would come in from the farm once a week to type sermons. When she started going to the church more and more, her husband figured more than typing was going on. A fiery death this side of eternity would be poetic justice, he figured, though no charges were ever filed. Legend has it the angry but satisfied husband left the state while the ashes were still hot, moved to the beach in Virginia, and became a Presbyterian.

Church members built back on the same spot but with one small concession to change. They re-named the church Second Baptist. It semi-thrived, though it took folks a while, either to get back in the spirit or to get the spirit back. In the early 1950s, attendance was back up to 250 or so. The congregation bought choir robes from a church supply in Columbia. There was talk of building a small new “educational” building and kitchen.

he bloodline of Third Baptist Church back home in Carolina had a long history of periods of Protestant progress halted by catastrophic calamity, woes much worse than a deacon running off with the offering plate money or a cat fight over who got to sing lead alto in the Christmas cantata.

Child’s play. Before Third Baptist hit the scene, a couple of congregations had suffered through a fate that somersaulted misfortune and instead headed straight for disaster, blight, and apocalyptic tribulation.

Most of you know churches. There are more than 300 church buildings in Shreveport-Bossier, so most of us have stumbled into one or two or six, by accident if nothing else.

Maybe you’re still at the church you grew up in. For those of us miles and even time zones removed from the church we first toddled into, do you remember? Do you remember the church you grew up in? If it’s still standing, does it pretty much look the same, smell the same, “feel” the same?

Probably so.

And good for you. There is something about your childhood church that rings eternal, even though we all know that every church building we’ve ever been in will one day, just like us, no longer be here.

An example: Third Baptist Church had strong ancestors built from Table Mountain pine that nonetheless checked out quicker than most, God bless them.

It had begun as First Baptist Church but had burned down April 22, 1942, long before my time. The story lived on.

Then tragedy struck again in the form of the familiar: fire.

Charred offering plates, charred choir robes and, sadly, another preacher’s corpse was all that remained identifiable.

This time, though, there was no afterglow of scandal. The elderly pastor spent a couple of nights a week at the church, on a cot in a small room with a gas heater. Either the heater had exploded or malfunctioned or the preacher had just fallen asleep while smoking a Lucky Strike non-filtered: they never found out for sure.

He was given a nice going-away funeral in the sanctuary of the borrowed Bear Swamp Baptist, five miles outside the city limits. But people didn’t seem as sad as you’d think they should have been. This is because the preacher’s sermons were dry as a peanut shell and he owed money to just about every business in town, from the IGA to Cooke’s Dry Cleaners and Funeral Home.

A lawyer even came to town, the story goes. Not that we didn’t have plenty of lawyers; every house in the county had a back porch lawyer, just none with a real degree. Or even a college credit. No matter: the educated man must have helped get things straightened out because another church got built, and it was mine.

After a month of Sunday afternoon services and prayers and business meetings at the borrowed Bear Swamp, the optimistic and tried-by-fire congregation of Second Baptist decided to try one more time, knowing full well that three strikes and you’re out.

It was decided the church would buy an old property about two miles outside of downtown, a building that had once housed the town’s sixth-graders until that class was folded into the main school on the hill behind the Dairy Maid. For years the building had been used only as a School Board storehouse. With some remodeling by the men in the church, it would serve as a fine sanctuary.

Mainly, everybody hoped the change in location would mean a change in luck. I felt lucky already; that old building was right across the unmarked two-lane from the house I grew up in.

It was named Third Baptist, it was made of brick, and it was heavily insured.
