If you don’t like the weather, not to worry. It can go from 80 to 40 overnight. We could even have snow before Christmas this year. On to the second verse...
This time of year, we celebrate the annual SB Magazine Best Of Awards. You guys really came through with online voting. We are so pleased to honor the 2025 winners and sincerely hope you will take the time to read through the list to see who won and who placed. Then, go out and patronize these hard-working people. There are homes, and then there are chapters— spaces where the narrative of everyday life becomes something more than routine.
In the leafy heart of Shreveport’s Pierremont South Highlands, each arrival at this Georgian estate feels cinematic, dramatic in the best possible way. The driveway curves beneath venerable trees; the gate swings open to reveal a brick façade with the quiet confidence of Southern tradition, gracefully reframed for modern eyes. Inside, craftsmanship and history meet beneath soaring ceilings—a circular staircase spiraling upward, not merely as a showpiece, but as a gesture setting expectation. This home is more than walls and windows; it is the backdrop for lives well-lived, where children pedal through sun-soaked lawns and
grown-ups savor golden afternoons in spaces both inviting and bold.
The foyer, reimagined by Ryan Smith Builders, is a masterclass in duality— Southern grandeur softened with contemporary warmth. Classic millwork defines every edge, and symmetry carries through from wide halls to luminous windows. Even the briefest visitor senses it: the pride behind preserved brickwork, the intentional transitions from lively gathering spaces to quiet retreats tucked just out of sight.
Yet, it’s the main living room that truly establishes the home’s rhythm. Here, sunlight tumbles

across hardwood floors, echoing the energy at the heart of the estate. The double-sided fireplace isn’t merely decorative—it’s the anchor for memories, drawing guests and family alike to its welcoming glow. It’s easy to imagine both busy holiday dinners and hushed evenings near the fire. Through floor-to-ceiling windows, natural light dances onto lush gardens and curated landscaping, blurring the line between interior and exterior.
The sunroom—bathed in morning light and layered with gentle warmth—lingers in the imagination. Boundaries between indoors and outdoors vanish as radiant windows
invite each season inside. It’s where daily moments unfold: a cup of tea in hand, children playing in the yard, sunlight tracing familiar paths across the floor. “We love that the kids can easily play in the yard, but can also easily bike to Pierremont Oaks Tennis and Swim Club and be around friends.” Beyond the glass, the yard extends as both playground and sanctuary—batting cages for the children, patio seats for stolen hours, firepit laughter stretching late into Southern nights.
The kitchen stands apart as the household’s true anchor, a space designed to perform and delight. Ryan Smith Builders’ meticulous
renovation blended the inheritance of exposed brick floors with the contemporary ease of marble counters, stainless steel appliances, and custom cabinetry crafted for both show and substance. Light amplifies every surface, while the central island begs for breakfast chats and impromptu toasts. “The kitchen’s Carrera marble countertops and exposed brick floors bring the family together at dinner time,” the owner says. Every meal here becomes its own occasion—hurried weekday mornings, neighborly dinners, or holiday gatherings that spill long past sunset. Even the smallest choices, from the tile backsplash to

the hardware’s gleam, preserve the home’s character: timeless but never fussy, rooted in Southern hospitality without sentimentality.
In quieter moments, the house invites retreat. Step past an arched vestibule into the master suite—a haven of marble, soft light, and understated luxury. A sculptural tub commands the room, flanked by a walk-through shower and closets tailored for comfort and ease. “Every detail, from fixtures to millwork, honors tradition while making life comfortable,” the owner notes. Upstairs, the rhythm continues: three oversized bedrooms and a sprawling playroom, each adaptable
as the family grows. Wide halls echo with footsteps, laughter, and glimpses of life constantly in motion.
The formal dining room, with its custom molding and measured elegance, awaits special occasions and family celebrations. Across the foyer, a built-in office makes workfrom-home days not just feasible but enjoyable. Sunlight highlights subtle architectural gestures throughout, turning everyday routines into experiences of calm and pleasure. Over time, the house seems to evolve with its owners—becoming warmer, more intimate, and increasingly reflective of a family rooted in place.
Smith Builders turned this vision into reality. The 2014 overhaul brought classical balance to modern living—marble and quartz where appropriate, restored windows that welcome every breeze, and lighting plans tuned to real family rhythms. The result is more than a renovation—it’s a reinvention, a home that honors craftsmanship while embracing contemporary life. “We worked closely with Ryan Smith to maintain the history but also provide all the comforts that made sense for our family’s future,” the owners say—a sentiment that captures the estate’s enduring philosophy.

Beyond its walls, Pierremont South Highlands pulses with its own neighborhood rhythm—children riding bikes at dusk, Christmas lights adorning December block parties, and picnics under leafy canopies. Hospitality here feels both grand and intimate, built on long-term neighborliness and spontaneous invitations. “There’s really a sense of tradition here, but it’s not closed off to new ideas. It’s the kind of neighborhood where you start out not knowing many people but soon realize you’re home,” the homeowner shares.
For these homeowners, the legacy of place is unmistakable. “What speaks to us is the balance. We’re close to everything—shops, schools, parks—but still able to enjoy quiet, private days as a family. That’s rare.” They reflect with gratitude

on the freedom to blend modern art with classic architecture, the way afternoon light filters through the living room, and the reassuring safety of familiar streets. “We appreciate the little things—the feel of the landscape in summer, the afternoon light in the living room, and always the comfort of knowing our kids are safe and happy.”
Ultimately, this estate stands as both anchor and promise—a chapter of living well, where tradition and renewal, celebration and calm, permanence and possibility harmonize. Every season adds a new layer of ritual and memory. As sunsets pour through wide windows and laughter drifts across the lawn, a quiet legacy takes hold: “It’s the kind

of home where you know memories will be made for generations.” Rooted in intention and lived with joy, this is a home built to nurture, inspire, and welcome new stories for years to come.

Ever found yourself nodding along in a conversation, secretly hoping you didn’t just agree to babysit someone’s pet iguana? If you’ve had to ask, “Wait, what did you say?” more times than you’ve asked for directions, you’re not alone. Sometimes people sound like they’re speaking through a sock, and it’s easy to blame mumbling or bad acoustics. But when “Huh?” becomes your catchphrase, it’s time to pay attention. Hearing loss sneaks up on us as we age. If we ignore it, we risk missing out on punchlines, sweet nothings, and maybe even the sound of our own fridge telling us we left the door open. So, let’s keep our ears in tune because life’s too short to miss the good stuff. The profound impact of hearing on our quality of life, and practical steps for lifelong protection.
Hearing is one of the five essential senses, yet its importance is often overshadowed until it begins to fade. It is the unseen bridge that connects us to our loved ones, the rhythm of our environment, and the crucial signals that keep us safe. Good hearing health is not just about avoiding silence; it is intrinsically linked to cognitive function, emotional wellbeing, and social engagement. Untreated hearing loss is associated with social isolation, depression, and even a faster rate of cognitive decline. Therefore, prioritizing the health of our ears
is a fundamental component of overall wellness and longevity.
The statistics are sobering. Millions of people worldwide experience some form of hearing impairment. Unlike a broken bone, hearing loss is often gradual and insidious, making its early detection difficult without professional screening. The ramifications of untreated hearing loss extend far beyond simply "turning up the volume":
• Cognitive Load: The brain must work harder to fill in the missing sounds, diverting energy from critical thinking and memory. There are studies that show that hearing loss is connected to dementia.
• Social Isolation: Difficulty following conversations, especially in noisy environments, often leads to withdrawal from social situations, fostering feelings of loneliness and anxiety.
• Safety: A reduced ability to hear alarms, sirens, or approaching vehicles poses a genuine safety risk. Imagine not being able to hear a train whistle at a railroad crossing.
Recognizing the vital role hearing plays is the first step toward proactive care.
Misty Littleton, Au.D., specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing and balance disorders. She, along with her colleagues, Nazifa Sultana, Au.D., Courtney Ross, Au.D., and Audiology Assistant, Sadie Ward, are the go-to audiologists for the Ear, Nose, And Throat Center in Shreveport. Once referred
by one of the ENTs, a patient is given a comprehensive hearing evaluation. It doesn’t take long, and it is non-invasive, and provides a precise map of your auditory function.
Misty explains, “During the appointment the patient will be tested in a sound booth. The idea of the test is to determine how well they hear certain sounds. We test tones at different pitches and volume to see how low they can hear the sound. The second part of the test is speech testing to determine how well they understand speech at a comfortable volume with no other cues but their hearing.”
include:
• Otoscopy: A visual examination of the outer ear and eardrum to check for blockages (like earwax) or physical damage.
• Pure-Tone Audiometry: This is the cornerstone of the test. The patient wears headphones and raises a hand or presses a button whenever they hear a tone. Tones are presented at various frequencies and volumes, and the results are plotted on an audiogram—a chart that graphically displays the softest sounds a person can hear.
• Speech Audiometry: Tests the ability to understand spoken words in both quiet and noisy settings, often a more accurate reflection of real-world hearing challenges.
• Tympanometry: Measures the movement of the eardrum and assesses the function of the middle ear, helping to identify issues like fluid buildup or middle ear infections. These tests collectively allow the audiologist to determine the type, degree, and configuration of any hearing loss.
Identifying the specific type of
hearing loss you have determines whether treatment will involve surgery or the use of hearing aids. Hearing loss is broadly categorized into three types: sensorineural, conductive, and mixed.
• Sensorineural Hearing Loss:
The most common type, usually permanent, caused by damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the auditory nerve.
Primary Causes: Aging (presbycusis) and Noise Exposure (from loud work environments, music, or recreational activities).
Other Causes: Genetics, certain medications (ototoxic drugs), or head trauma.
Sensorineural hearing loss cannot be corrected medically but can usually be improved with the use of hearing aids.
• Conductive Hearing Loss: Occurs when sound waves cannot pass efficiently through the outer or middle ear. This type is often temporary and treatable.
Primary Causes: Earwax buildup, middle ear infections (otitis media), a punctured eardrum, or fluid in the middle ear.
“Some people can hear normal in the lower pitches, but they don’t hear as well in the higher pitches. Those lower pitches have kept them feeling like they can hear, however those higher pitches are responsible for the clarity of speech, Misty added. “High frequency hearing loss is a very common loss, and it is one that can be overlooked because it can be subtle and develops slowly.” Misty recommends having a hearing test, even if it’s just to establish a baseline for your hearing health.
If you have a constant, annoying ringing in your ear (tinnitus) you may have hearing loss. “It doesn’t always mean that’s what

it is, but there’s a very strong chance you might have hearing loss. You may have a slight hearing loss that is not noticeable and that can cause the tinnitus,” Misty explained.
The great news is that NoiseInduced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is almost entirely preventable. Protecting your hearing requires simple, consistent habits.
1. Lower the Volume: Use the 60/60 Rule—listen with headphones for no more than 60 minutes at a time, at no more than 60% of the device's maximum volume.
2. Wear Protection: When engaged in activities above 85 decibels (e.g., concerts, lawn mowing, power tools), wear earplugs or earmuffs. Look for protection that offers a high Noise Reduction Rating (NRR).
3. Give Your Ears a Break: After extended exposure to loud sound, give your ears at least 18
hours of quiet time to recover.
4. Regular Check-ups: Make a baseline hearing test a part of your annual health routine, especially if you have risk factors.
Modern Hearing Care: More Than Just Technology
Hearing care has evolved rapidly. Today’s hearing aids are not only smaller and more discreet but also packed with smart features— some can even connect directly to your smartphone for easier control and streaming. However, technology alone isn’t enough to ensure the best outcomes. The real difference comes from working with an audiologist who can personalize solutions to fit your lifestyle and needs.
Audiologists don’t rely solely on what they learned in school. To provide the best care, they:
• Continually study new approaches: They keep up with the latest research in hearing science and audiology.

• Attend ongoing
training: Workshops, seminars, and professional conferences help them learn about new techniques and technologies.
• Monitor emerging technology: Staying informed about advancements in hearing aids, diagnostic tools, and treatment options means they can offer the most effective solutions.
• Adapt to local needs: Audiologists filter global advances through a local lens, ensuring their advice and care are relevant to the community they serve.
When you partner with an audiologist who keeps up with the latest developments, you receive care that goes beyond the basics. You gain access to cutting-edge solutions, customized to fit your individual needs and local circumstances. This leads to more effective results, greater comfort, and guidance you can rely on. The ENT Center in Shreveport is a sound place to start on your journey to better hearing.

Having the Blue Cross Blue Shield card in my wallet — well it feels like armor.
It feels like I’m part of this special elite club and can get what I need whatever the crisis. Right Card. Right Care.

There’s a myth That pop culTure and aThleTic bravado only meet up somewhere glamorous, maybe under the brighT lightS of the coaStS. but in shreveport-bosSier, louisiana, every friday night tells a smokier, punchier Story. here, game day feels like ShowTime and the line beTween halftime and encore iS aS Thin aS The rim on a daiquiri glasS.
A local might tell you the heartbeat of this town lives somewhere between the historic Strand Theatre and the Municipal Auditorium, where legends like Elvis and Johnny Cash made their mark. But while those names loom large, nobody here’s worried about living in the shadow—they’re busy starring in their own production. Walk these streets and you’ll see festival banners brushing up against football field fences, and every so often, you catch the glint of a championship ring at a corner bar, right next to a Grammy on open mic night.
It’s a city where culture doesn’t trickle—it cascades. Think about the summer of 2024, when the Humor & Harmony Festival took over Stageworks of Louisiana. The vibe? Playful, electric. NFL legend Terrell
Owens drained three-pointers beside rapper 2 Chainz, while the crowd bounced to beats and the digital scoreboard. Later, at the after-party, the city’s regulars could be seen sharing drinks, laughter, and Instagram stories with more VIPs than a Hollywood red carpet. It’s perfectly normal for a Grammy winner to hold court while a Super Bowl champ goes shot-for-shot beside him.
And speaking of star power—50 Cent and DJ Envy rolled to town with their custom car show, proving that in Shreveport-Bossier, horsepower isn’t just about what burns on the field but also what revs up in a parking lot full of tricked-out rides and local athletes’ pickups. It’s all flash, all flavor, and always ready for its close-up.
This cross-pollination of sports and entertainment is stitched into the local DNA. Our Hall of Famers have always doubled as headliners. Golfers Hal Sutton, Sam Burns, and David Toms keep sponsors busy, but they also light up the region’s billboards. NBA greats Stromile Swift and Robert Parish are hometown royalty on and off the court. Seth Lugo and Vernon Wells keep the baseball tradition hot; Terry Bradshaw is the populist hero with just enough tongue-incheek charm for cable news. Stories tumble out of this place, no matter which highlight reel you’re watching.
But the true roots run deeper. For Shreveport-Bossier, the real magic happens when sports and music, legends and fans, meld together in ways that feel uniquely Southern. Every famous mural shares space
with a music marquee. Every celebration doubles as a block party. Retired Olympians rub shoulders with college athletes at a crawfish boil. High school homecomings unfold in venues designed for rock legends and rodeo stars. Film shoots commandeer the same fields that little leaguers call home. Even the local rugby squad might find their match interrupted by a jazz parade and nobody blinks twice.
Ritual blends with revelry; every neighbor’s story sounds at least half legendary. You’re just as likely to spot a retired NFL coach mentoring Little League as you are to see a film crew setting up for a music video where a Mudbugs star is moonlighting. It’s not an intersection, it’s a merger—a local tradition that turns open doors into open invitations.

Here, Shreveport-Bossier doesn’t just manufacture celebrities—it mobilizes them. The curtain never drops. The parade never really ends. When Southern bravado meets festival energy, and pop culture invades the locker room, the lines blur gloriously. The city’s highlight reels come stamped with a drawl, a wink, and a soundtrack you’ll hear all the way down Texas Street.
So next time you’re Thinking about where sportS meet culTure for a parTy worTh a tickeT, don’t look Toward the coaStS. JusT liSten for the laughTer, the music, and The cheer thaT TurnS every friday night into SomeThing JuSt a litTle biT famous.

In the world of commerce, being the "best" is not defined by what your spreadsheets looks like or how many awards you’ve accumulated; it is a title exclusively conferred by the customer. A business becomes the indisputable leader when it achieves a state of customer-centric excellence. What exactly is “customer-centric,” you may ask? Simply put, customer-centric means always, always put your customer first. It means moving beyond mere satisfaction. It’s generating a
Any customer expects that a product or service will work exactly as advertised, every single time. The best businesses master operational excellence to eliminate friction and surprise. This means achieving ultra-high reliability across all touchpoints: the website is always up, the delivery window is always met, when you order no cheese on your burger, you get no cheese on your burger. Above all, the product quality is consistently perfect.
For a customer, this predictability translates into one less thing for the customer to think about. Or, if you want to get real fancy – reducing their cognitive load—they don't have to worry about the transaction. Companies with a one-click purchasing and transparent shipping updates, make a transaction predictable and effortless. The "best" company strives to make the core promise reliable.
While reliability avoids mistakes, true excellence is proven when problems occur – and they will
from time to time. Customer service should not be treated as a cost center but as a value multiplier. They move from reactive customer support to proactive customer success. This requires radical empathy, understanding the customer's actual goal, not just their immediate request. For example, if a customer calls about a technical fault, an average company fixes the fault; the best company anticipates the downstream impact of that fault on the customer's larger project and offers compensatory or preventative measures. Being proactive transforms a potentially negative interaction into a moment of brand elevation, demonstrating that the business values the customer’s time and success over its own immediate convenience.
In an age defined by speed, the best service is often the one that demands the least effort from the user. Companies that are perceived as the best aggressively seek out and destroy customer friction. This principle, sometimes called the "Zero-Friction Mandate," affects everything from product design to checkout processes. It is another way of seeking to remove
deep trust and making an emotional connection. It’s proving daily that you can be relied upon. CustomerCentric means a great deal more than the typical “customer is always right” mindset. Most of us would think that it’s just plain common sense for a business to put their customer first. That’s exactly what it is but, with a bit of research, I found that becoming customer-centric is built upon five foundational pillars with catchy descriptions, each focused entirely on optimizing the customer journey.

obstacles and make a process as seamless as possible. A perfect example is the speedy drive through at Chick Fil A – ZFM perfection so impressive that other fast-food establishments have incorporated this method to further the customer experience.
While consistency is crucial, customers also crave to feel seen and valued as individuals. Becoming the best requires delivering customization or personalization at scale. In other words, making each interaction the customer more relevant to them at every point in the process. This is not just adding the customer's name to an email; it is using data and behavioral insights to tailor the product, service, or communication in ways that are genuinely relevant. This tailored approach creates an emotional connection—the customer feels understood and believes the company is invested in their individual needs, fostering loyalty that resists competitive pricing.
In the long run, customer perception is heavily influenced by the business's values and
ethics. The modern customer, especially younger generations, wants to align their spending with companies they trust and admire.
The best businesses operate with transparency in pricing, data usage, and sourcing. They make their mission clear and demonstrate corporate social responsibility not as a marketing gimmick but as an authentic commitment. When customers believe a business is not only delivering superior quality but also acting as a responsible corporate citizen, that business transcends the purely transactional and earns the highest honor: unwavering advocacy. Translation: customer word of mouth marketing that will organically promote your business through personal recommendations. The best businesses understand this and know that it is a powerful path to business success.
Ultimately, a business doesn't declare itself the best; the market does. This designation is achieved by making the customer’s journey flawless, proactive, effortless, personalized, and ethically sound—a continuous loop of performance and trust.

Have you ever been seated at a wellattended awards luncheon wondering, “How long will this next speech last? And “When can we finish eating so we can get to the awards?”
This happened to me a couple of weeks ago at the Athena Awards hosted by the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. Except, when the representative from Ochsner LSU Health, the corporate sponsor, started to speak, the atmosphere changed. The attendees started listening. Women across the room were all nodding their heads, “Yes!” And probably thinking, “Finally, someone said it out loud.” I whispered to my husband, “I hope you’re listening to this.” (He said he was)
The next day I called Lisa Babin, Executive Director of Communication, Public Affairs & Development for LSU Health Shreveport, and asked her to reach out to this man who spoke to us so eloquently and earnestly. He agreed to allow us to publish his speech so that all of Shreveport Bossier City will know and understand how this wonderful man who obviously understands women hit the nail on the head.
As we go into this holiday season, make sure you give the women in your life a bigger hug than usual and let them know how much they are appreciated and loved.
It is an honor to stand before you on behalf of Ochsner LSU Health, the presenting sponsor of this incredible celebration of leadership, service, and vision.
My name is Dr. Dani Zoorob — I serve as the Chief Medical Information Officer and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and I am also a urogynecologist at Ochsner LSU Health.
And yes — I realize the irony: a man standing before a room full of powerful women at an event dedicated to celebrating women’s leadership.
But the truth is, I would not be here — not as a physician, not as a leader, not even as the person I am today — if it were not for the extraordinary women who shaped my life.
When I think about leadership, I don’t think about titles, corner offices, or accolades.
I think about my aunt, who was a midwife — a woman of grace and strength — who dedicated her life to raising her deceased brother’s children.
She was my compass.
When I was young and searching for my place in the world, she saw what I could not yet see. She invested in that vision — not just with her resources, but with her faith.
By the Lord’s blessing and through her unwavering belief, I was able to reach where I stand today. My aunt taught me that medicine is not about prestige; it is about purpose — serving those who need you and lifting those who cannot yet stand on their own.
Her belief carried me through medical school. Her love became the scaffolding on which I built my career.
And that — that — is leadership.
The quiet kind.
The steadfast kind.
The kind that lifts others without ever asking for recognition.
That is the Athena spirit — seeing the light in others and refusing to let it go out.
Every day, I witness that same spirit in the women I serve.
Women who are healers, protectors, decision-makers, and champions — often all at once.
They lead in boardrooms and classrooms, in clinics, and most importantly, in kitchens — in moments of triumph and in moments of exhaustion.
They carry families, communities, and dreams on their shoulders, yet somehow still find the strength to lift others.
Every woman is the chief health officer of her household.
Let’s not forget the importance of that.
She carries the weight of her family’s well-being — often quietly, but always faithfully.
Women are, without question, the heartbeat of our world. And they are the ones who literally carry, feel, and hear that heartbeat when it first begins.
At Ochsner LSU Health, we see that truth every single day.
As a urogynecologist and as Chief Medical Information Officer, my mission is to ensure that care reaches women wherever they are — in their homes, in their workplaces, in the everyday rhythm of their lives.
That’s why we embrace innovation that empowers.
Programs like Connected MOM allow expectant mothers to safely monitor their health from home, their vital signs shared instantly with their care team. It brings comfort, connection, and confidence — not just data. It’s not about technology; it’s about trust. You trust that your system will give your treating doctors instant access to your health data, and you trust that you are getting care at North Louisiana’s only health system, which has multiple Leapfrog A ratings. This is important because no mother should ever have to choose between safety and peace of mind.
That is what digital medicine means at Ochsner LSU Health: an extension of empathy — ensuring that every woman has the tools, the information, and the confidence to guide her family’s health.
It is innovation in service of women’s strength, not a replacement for it.
In that sense, our mission is deeply aligned with the Athena legacy — to empower, to include, and to lift.
I am also proud to say that within our own Department of OB/GYN, what was once a department led entirely by men is now one led by women — strong, visionary, transformational leaders.
Every team. Every service. Every program — led by women.
Among them is Dr. Kristy Waltman, our Vice Chair and one of today’s ATHENA honorees.
She represents everything this award stands for: courage, compassion, and conviction.
When women lead, systems change. When women lead, families heal. When women lead, communities thrive.
The ATHENA mission, founded by Martha Mertz more than four decades ago, was born from a simple but revolutionary truth: when women’s leadership is recognized, it cannot be denied.
And today — in this room — that truth lives and breathes through each of you.
But let me offer a challenge: Don’t let the Athena flame stop at this luncheon. Carry it with you.
Light another’s path. Somewhere — without you knowing — there is a young woman watching you.
She may never tell you, but she’s being inspired by you. She’s learning how to lead by the way you listen, by the way you lift, and by the way you love what you do.
Be her mirror. Be her mentor. Be her Athena.
Because leadership is not inherited — it’s ignited. And when one woman rises, she doesn’t rise alone — she carries generations with her.
So today, from the bottom of my heart, I say thank you. Thank you for leading with grace.
Thank you for building bridges where walls once stood. The world is brighter because of you.
And every time one woman steps forward, she lights the path for the next generation to follow.
Congratulations to our honorees.
Thank you for allowing me to share this moment with you.

The waiting room at the doctor’s office is as far away from the North Pole as Fourth of July is from Christmas. By definition, you are in a room where you do nothing but grab a creased and weathered Newsweek with Bush on the cover and wait.
So I listened. And was not surprised. Coughs. Sneezes. Harsh words about a co-pay. And I thought, it really IS beginning to sound a lot like Christmas.
If Santa comes in moaning with the flu, we’ll have touched all the bases.
I love me some sounds of Christmastime, even though one of those sounds is a sniffle, and a standard is the inspired blowing of a nose. Hark the herald…
There’s the sound of the angry shopper, the screeching tires, the curse word when the lights don’t work, and the timeless “Are we there yet?”
Those are Christmas-seasoned but could happen almost any time. Christmas, though, Christmas has a language all its
own, a language you hear only this time of year. Not a lot of Santa spottings in summertime.
When do you hear “figgy pudding” or “ho ho ho” or “What size sweater you think he wears?” except at Christmastime?
Rudolph.
The Island of Misfit Toys.
Burl Ives.
Andy Williams singing “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “The Andy Williams Christmas Special.” Came on public television the other night, a retrospective. Andy Williams, one of the finest gentleman and most talented entertainers to ever walk onto a stage, didn’t invent the Christmas sweater, but he probably perfected it …
Silver bells. Jingle bells. Sleigh bells. The bells of the Salvation Army.
Holly jolly.
Brenda Lee — and if you don’t
know how to bake a pie, SARA Lee!
Dean Martin singing “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” (Reminder: Dean Martin, most underrated entertainer ever.)
“Ha…llelujah! Hallelujah. Hallelujah!”
What’s your favorite Christmas sound? Could be your children, if you have little ones. Could be the memories of how your grown ones sounded when they were little ones. Maybe it’s your family arriving — or leaving! I know it’s not “Grandma Got Run Over by A Reindeer.” Heaven help …
Christmas sounds are Ralphie asking for a BB gun and “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “White Christmas” and my favorite Christmas movie, “Scrooged,” which concludes with the Bill Murray character, TV exec Frank Cross, the modern-day Scrooge now re-born into the wonder of Christmas, saying that Christmas Eve is “…the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer, we smile a little easier, we cheer a little more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are the people that we always

hoped we would be!”
Christmas is the sound of someone, somewhere, changing.
It’s December words and phrases like Bethlehem and shepherds keeping watch …
And lo, the angel of the Lord…
Unto you is born this day in the city of David…
The wise men…
A manger and swaddling clothes.
And somewhere in all these Christmas words and sounds, between a baby crying and the cattle lowing and our carol singing, is the blessed sound of fullness … in silence. Not emptiness, but fullness.
Silent night, holy night.
The noise of nothing, which is the sound of everything. You’ll hear it if you try — and sometimes, even if you don’t.
Sounds good to me.
