ome people think I’m crazy because I love a warm winter day. (Well, maybe not record-breaking 85 degrees on Christmas Day when I’m opening gifts like a heated blanket and heated jacket.) But to me growing up, the best part of a Shreveport winter was that you never knew when that warm day or stretch would come, but it always did. I lived for years in Washington, DC, and St. Louis, Missouri, and what I recall is that once winter arrived, that was it. Prepare to be cold each and every day until spring. I remember longing for the changing northwest Louisiana weather during those winters!

Technically we’re only about three weeks into winter, and two weeks into the year. Who knows what 2022 will hold? Hopefully health and happiness and hope for ourselves, our cities, and our country.

In this issue, we’ve tried to capture a bit of what trends we might see, some ways to stay healthy and fit, and how to keep your resolutions (if you’re still trying). We also have a special section on education.

We are excited to welcome award-winning columnist Teddy Allen as a contributing writer in 2022. He has been a preeminent feature columnist in north Louisiana for over 30 years. You may not know it, but he was the editor of SB Magazine in its very first year! You’ll find his column, And Another Thing, on the last page of each issue.

Las Vegas Night - Deaf Action Center The Betty and Leonard Phillips

Deaf Action Center’s biennial event “Las Vegas Night” was held at the Petroleum Club.

Guests dressed to the nines for this glitzy, glamour-filled Vegas fundraiser. Gaming tables were set up throughout the top floor as attendees tried their hand with Lady Luck. The pink neon night included a lavish buffet, ice sculptures and an open bar. The gala also included a silent and live auction with such amazing items as: an autographed Bruce Springsteen guitar, a 5-night stay in Iceland, a Porsche High Performance Track Experience, 3 Night Kentucky Bourbon Trail, Private Jet to Dallas for six, St. Martin Luxury Villa five nights for six guests, and Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry just to name a few. Proceeds of this event benefit the Betty and Leonard Phillips Deaf Action Center to promote the independence of the deaf, the hard of hearing and the multi-handicapped deaf in Louisiana. The Center serves as a beacon and source of unity for all persons affected and touched by hearing loss.

Independence Bowl The 45th Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl was held in December at Independence Stadium in Shreveport. The University of Alabama at Birmingham UAB Blazers defeated Brigham Young University BYU Cougars 31-28.

Despite the rainy and windy conditions, fans came out to watch this very close and exciting game in person. According to ABC and ESPN PR the game drew in over 3.2 million viewers and was the highest-rated sporting event outside of the National Football League for the weekend it aired and the highest-rated bowl game of the season. Also, several Independence Bowl records were set during this game. UAB Quarterback Dylan Hopkins set the Independence Bowl record for completion percentage in a game at 82.6%. Also, for the first time in Independence Bowl history, the running backs from each team rushed over 150 yards with BYU RB Tyler Allgeier rushing 192 yards and UAB RB DeWayne McBride rushing 183 yards. Thanks to Radiance Technologies for sponsoring the Independence Bowl bringing in revenue to Shreveport-Bossier.

Sock Hop at American Legion Post 14 The American Legion Post 14 hosted a 1950’s Sock Hop featuring the band Flashback. The top floor overlooking beautiful Cross Lake became the dance floor for this Rock-n-Roll evening.

Couples, dressed in 50’s attire, entered the Twist and Jitterbug dance competitions as well as the Best 50’s Costume Contest.

There was a fish dinner offered before the sock hop and popcorn and boxed candy concessions available during the dance. DENTRISTY T rends in dentistry have rapidly changed just within the last few years. With technological advancements and the new “norms” of personal health due to the Coronavirus pandemic of 2020, the medical and dental fields have had to adapt and change accordingly. A couple of the technological advancements that we currently use in our practices, treatment specific, are that of laser dentistry and digital impressions with, in office CAD/CAM milling of crowns, bridges, splints, etc. Lasers can accomplish a wide variety of tasks in surgical dentistry. Personally, I use a laser almost daily in my practice to gather precision accuracy via impression of crown and bridge margins by troughing small amounts of gum tissue around the preparations so that the impression material can flow “under” the margin and show the lab perfect location of where the new crown or bridge will meet the tooth.

Less routine procedures I may perform are excisions of pathologies, such as, tumors on the tongue, gum tissues, or cheeks; releasing a tethered tongue or lip to promote proper speech as well as many other reasons, also known as, tongue and lip ties; and finally desensitizing a tooth where a patient may have “gum line sensitivity” due to recession of the gum tissue, exposing the more porous and sensitive portion of the whole tooth, the roots. Lasers come in very large variety of shapes, sizes, and method of function; however, if you were to see one in a dental practice it will most likely be a diode laser, although the other varieties can serve the same purpose, do more (e.g., tattoo removal, etc.), and do it a lot faster than a diode.

The gentle kiss of the sun on your face while you squish sand between your toes. The squeals of delight from your child as he pulls his first rainbow trout from a rushing stream.

Where was I going with this? Anywhere! I’ll go anywhere with this. Just let me go somewhere.

So many have been unable to soothe their itch to travel for so long. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced great change on travelers, with cruises being canceled, flights being restricted and many venues being closed or restricted.

Jennifer Flowers knows a thing or two about grand adventures.

She is the sustainability correspondent for the travel magazine AFAR. She shared some thoughts about satisfying your wanderlust in 2022.

JUST GET OUT When people are getting away, it’s not to order room service.

Beaches, national parks and other outdoor destinations always have a devout following among intrepid travelers. After all, the whole point of trip is to slow down and catch your breath, and who wants to do that from behind a mask?

“During the pandemic, interest in nature-based travel and outdoors adventures has skyrocketed,” Flowers said. “U.S. national parks have seen record numbers: take Yellowstone, which has already exceeded 2016 visitation numbers, reporting more than 4.47 million visitors in 2021. I predict that wide open spaces will remain the new luxury in the years ahead—not just because of the new omicron variant, but also because there’s a newfound appreciation among travelers for the mental and physical benefits of the Great Outdoors.”

Travel website Kayak reports that outdoor locales dominated the trending list on the website at the end of 2021. In fact, four of the top 10 spots were in Colorado and Montana. Searches in those states were up 46 percent compared to 2019. And places like Cancun and Honolulu have replaced more metropolitan options like San Francisco and Boston. This was the first time that New York City didn’t crack the top 10.

THE RISE OF THE ‘WORKCATION’ For a while, we believed in the Staycation — the idea that you could leave all your worries behind without straying too far from your own front door, if you even left the house at all. But then our homes also became our offices, our schools, our churches and our restaurants. We’re ready to do anything to get away from home — even if that means working.

The concept of a “workcation,” sometimes called digital nomadism, is simple. As technology makes it easier to work from just about anywhere, people are working while they travel, without taking vacation time to do it. According to a survey by Kayak, more than 40 percent of Gen Z employees plan to take a workcation in 2022.

“There’s also the rise of van life — more and more younger folks are foregoing buying property in favor of a nomadic lifestyle,” Flowers said. “Some evidence of this is the rise of Hipcamp, airstream trailers, Outdoorsy... so many folks are ready to just be on the move!”

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED One thing the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us is that flexibility in life is essential. And that includes travel. The Omicron variant is raging right now, and who knows what’s next.

A Fortune report showed searches for flights within seven days are up 50 percent, indicating many travelers are booking flights on the spur of the moment.

“I’d say that while we’re navigating the Omicron boom, anyone who wants to travel needs to be completely flexible,” Flowers said. “COVID tests are hard to come by, and airline staffing is low due to the spikes, which means flight cancellations. So folks might get stuck somewhere or end up not being able to travel until later. And those who get sick abroad or test positive will need to stay put.”

Flowers does recommend purchasing trip insurance that includes COVID disruptions. She does not discourage people from exploring.

“Travel is such an important part of our lives, so I don’t think people should just sit at home,” she said. “I’d say that if you have

your jabs and your boosters, you’re lowering your chances considerably, and I wouldn’t leave home without it.”

GOING LIKE A PRO Flowers said that knowing when and where to travel can pay dividends in more ways than one.

For example, she suggests going on safari during the green season and taking Caribbean vacations after the holiday rush.

“I’m all for traveling during shoulder (off-peak) season when the crowds are smaller, and considering lesser known destinations,” she said. “The deals are way better, and there are fewer folks on the road with you, so you have more of that destination to yourself.”

owntown Shreveport was a festive scene over the recent holidays. Lights were up, trees were twinkling, and businesses were welcoming back customers after a period in which it seemed the world had gone dark.

While 2021 was still a year to take a step forward then wait and evaluate, those evaluations were coming up positive, leading investors to downtown Shreveport. When Lewis Kalmbach and family decided to return home to Shreveport after years spent in California, it was a space in downtown that caught his attention and in 2021 became his new, trendy, and art-filled Big Sun Studios.

When Jim Malsch, the founder of the computer firm ECS decided to sell his business, it was a downtown property at 717 Crockett Street that reinvigorated a desire for his first post-‘retirement’ career. His Andress Artist & Entrepreneur Center is now a hub of creativity, business, and big ideas.

Wealth manager Tim Fitzgerald opted to leave south Shreveport and return his TMG Financial Group to his personal downtown roots, choosing a cool space at the Lofts at 624 Texas Street to house his company, conveniently just across the lobby from the wonderful smells of Rhino Coffee Downtown.

The Year to Come In 2021 Envision Media and Marketing owner Drayden Dunn became a first-time downtown building owner nabbing a prime location at the head of Texas Street which he intends to rehab and call his own.

The long-vacant Petroleum Tower at 425 Edwards Street, buildings in the 700 block of Marshall, the 400 block of Crockett, the 600 block of Edwards, the 600 and 700 blocks of Crockett, the 600 block of Milam, the 300 block of Edwards Street, the 300 block of Market Street, the 200 block of Caddo Street, and the 500 block of Milam Street are sold or are under contract awaiting closing.

Soon they will become things like apartments, condos, restaurants and retail spaces, hotel rooms and Airbnb offerings. A small universe of interested developers are touring available buildings, looking for the perfect spot to house their varied dreams of commercial, restaurant, residential, or small manufacturing.

Businesses, too, have been on the move. Downtown just celebrated one-year anniversaries of The Lot, the bus terminal at 400 Crockett reinvigorated as a place for music, art and food trucks, the delicious ShaBaby’s Cajun Cooking at 605 Texas St., Kajun Korner Food Express at 400 Texas St., and T’s Comfort Food at 830 Louisiana Ave., the Blue Med Spa at 509 Market St., and Malsch’s Andress at 717 Crockett St.

In the next weeks, we will welcome a new tea and energy drink café at 431 Texas Street, a new location for the UrgentEMS/ ArkLaTex Accelerated Care Clinic, and celebrate the grand openings of the hugely popular Pop N Pizza at 500 Texas Street, and the Phoenix top 40 dance club at 400 Commerce Street.

Later in 2022, Refine Design Boutiques and More and Jess & Jane Beauty Bar in the 600 block of Texas Street will open with more space for beauty, retail, and food vendors.

It is a time for the bold downtown. Entrepreneurs of all ages and backgrounds are staking claims and their dreams are making our historic city center a more interesting, vibrant, beautiful, and colorful place.

The pandemic forced colleges and universities to rethink how classes are taught, said Dr. Julie Lessiter, vice chancellor of strategic initiatives at Louisiana State University in Shreveport.

“Those relationships are as much a part of the educational process as the classes,” Lessiter added.

“I would say that the one big thing coming out of COVID and the changes in higher education is updating technology in the classroom and being able to update the pedagogue — how we teach,” she said. “It’s been painful, but it’s a positive outcome.”

The asynchronous modality was possible, Johnson said, because La. Tech already had a Learning Management System in place, where course materials could be uploaded and accessed.

Today, many colleges and universities are finding the coronavirus pandemic to be a disputer all its own.

Louisiana Tech has gone through a similar transformation, said Dr. Donna Johnson, Deputy Chief Innovation Officer.

At the beginning of the pandemic, La. Tech saw the biggest impact on its Tech Barksdale offerings at Barksdale Are Force Base.

“Not only did we have to abide by university protocols for the pandemic, we had to overlap with base protocols as well,” Johnson said.

Tech shifted all face-to-face classes on online modality at Tech Barksdale, as well as the Bossier City campus and the main campus in Ruston. Tech adopted two approaches to online teaching. The first was a synchronous modality, where students logged in at a prescribed time and participated in class lectures, discussions, assignments and tests. The second was an asynchronous modality, in which students could access information in more of an on-demand style.

“We were able to start using more of the tools in our toolbox,” Johnson said. “While we had those tools, not everyone was using them pre-pandemic.”

Lessiter said higher education is just one area where COVID has accelerated the use of technology in our everyday life.

“We no longer go to the bank or go to the store,” she said. “We do it on the phone. Even going to a restaurant is different. Education is the same.”

She said one of the first hurdles that had to be crossed was understanding what constituted “online learning.”

“There was a huge misconceptions about online learning in the past,” she said. “There was this notion that a teacher would put PowerPoint slides on a page with voiceover. That’s not online learning at all.”

From the outset of the pandemic, as learning shifted from in-person to virtual environments, LSUS invested money and personnel in training the faculty how to teach online, Lessiter said. One of the ways La. Tech addresses training issues was to implement the Q&A Cafe for faculty members to get their questions about teaching in an online environment answered, Johnson said.

The key, Lessiter said, is the notion of active learning, regardless of the environment. It has involved embracing some new methods.

“It’s how students learn nowadays,” Lessiter said. “It used to be a teach lectures and students take notes.

But this generation is on their phones all the time, watching short videos and other active learning. We’re able to incorporate that in the classroom.”

In addition to active learning, building community is another factor of higher education that has changed in the wake of the pandemic, Lessiter said. Regardless of the platform — in-person, online or a hybrid model — providing an opportunity to engage with students remains critical. she said.

She sees it often in the library among students enrolled in the online MBA program.

“I see many students working together in person, in groups, who are taking online classes,” she said. “They are doing out-of-class assignments together. It’s neat to see.”

Those relationships are as much a part of the educational process as the classes, Lessiter added.

“It’s the value of bringing people together,” she said. “Learning how to communicate, how to disagree and work through it. It’s the soft-skill part that we pride ourselves on teaching. You can do it online, but it’s easier in a face-to-face setting.”

The rise of online and hybrid learning has opened the door to higher education for more people.

“It’s lowered the threshold for what’s achievable,” La. Tech’s Johnson said. “It’s removed the barriers of space and time that exist. Where traditional students focus on their studies and the overall college experience, non-traditional students have competing priorities. Now we can bring learning to non-traditional students so they can fit in with the other priorities in their lives.”

Lessiter said online learning models help people who were once intimidated by the college experience.

“I have taught online and in the classroom,” she said. “A certain sort of person doesn’t feel comfortable speaking in a classroom.

But they give rich, contextual conversation sitting behind a computer. It’s a personal preference.”

Johnson said La. Tech continues to proactively evaluate its online teaching opportunities and hone its processes, while continuing to recognize that there is more to college than classes.

“Louisiana Tech very much supports the traditional campus experience, which cannot be replicated online,” Johnson said. “We will always serve the traditional student. Now that we have gotten these new proficiencies, we can reach different type of student and serve a more diverse population.”

Johnson serves on a statewide task force for Complete LA, an initiative by the University of Louisiana system, under the direction of Dr. Jim Henderson, to help adults with some college experience complete their degree programs.

“Within the UL system, each institution has committed to meet the needs of non-traditional students in our state. Those students prefer the distance modality. I think what we will see is a more effective use of technology. I don’t see higher education as a whole forsaking the traditional campus experience. What we are going to see a trend in diversifying. This is an awesome opportunity to serve different students in different ways.”

These shifts are taking place on a larger scale and are here to stay, according to Steven Butschi, Head of Education at Google Cloud.

Butschi said in a recent article at the website Fierce Education that the “typical” college student no longer exists. Colleges and universities must continue to innovate to provide a better educational experience to the modern evolving college student.

“We will get more innovative and redefine how technology is used in higher education,” he said in the article. “Across departments, functional areas and classes, people will get better at managing/ using/storing data.”

Even before the pandemic disrupted campus life, LSUS was moving in the direction to create more active learning opportunities through it Collabratory. The Collabratory is an immersive learning space with a three-part mission: •

TO PROVIDE LSUS STUDENTS with the opportunity to engage in active learning and be exposed to the technology of today and the future.

TO PROVIDE OUTREACH to K-12 students so they are exposed to technology of the future.

TO PARTNER WITH LOCAL INDUSTRY so students are able to experience real-world working environments before they graduate.

“It’s an environment where students can come in and create,” Lessiter said. “They learn by doing. It doesn’t matter if it’s in a STEM field or an arts field. Technology is in every step of our lives, and it’s only going to dominate more and more.”

She said COVID has presented challenges in getting K-12 students bussed in to the Collabratory. LSUS is planning Super Saturday programs for children to use the 3-D printers and holographic technology to create.

“The ability to be creative is going to be a key skill,” Lessiter said.

“We have to hone in on the creativity gene to have that next generation of creators.”

Another pair comes through the door, this time an eighthgrader holding the hand of a three-year-old as the older student leads the younger one to class; they sit with the Pre-K3's and spend time together before the school day begins. Boys and girls continue to trickle in–alone or in groups–and are greeted by teachers and classmates. The bell rings and students stand for morning assembly, ready for our principal, Mr. Woodham, to lead them in the Sign of the Cross and to start the day together in prayer. Student birthdays and achievements are celebrated, and as the school is released to begin another day Mr. Woodham asks, “ What do we always remember?” and students respond, “Kindness is practiced here!” Classes collect their bags, eighth graders prepare to walk next door to Loyola for their Algebra I class, and the day has started. Another day in the life of St. John Berchmans Catholic School, another day as a Cardinal has begun.

Centenary College of Louisiana Centenary College of Louisiana announced the new Centenary Affordability Pledge (CAP) in September, an initiative that provides full tuition coverage for all new, incoming Louisiana students who are Pell Grant and TOPS eligible. Under the CAP, the College will cover any tuition expenses that remain after the Pell and TOPS awards have been applied.

By closing the gap between Pell/TOPS awards and tuition costs, the CAP provides eligible Louisiana students with up to four years of full tuition. The program will be available to all new, incoming students from Louisiana beginning in fall 2022.

“Centenary has had a long history of making a quality college education affordable for all students through academic merit scholarships, need based grants and aid as well as the use of federal funds,” said Calhoun Allen, vice president for enrollment and marketing at Centenary. “With the CAP we have taken that a step further, ensuring that the students who need the most assistance have full tuition completely covered.”

The CAP further strengthens Centenary’s existing commitment to making an outstanding liberal arts education accessible and affordable for all students. caravan – an unparalleled music experience

here are numerous ways to start a band. It begins with finding musicians that click. Everyone needs to get along and have the rapport it takes to be together for hours of rehearsal and performance.

What kind of music will you play? Will you stick to one genre or would covering a little bit of everything get you the most gigs?

You will need a memorable band name. A name that will stand the test of time and that your fan base will immediately recognize once they have heard you perform.

Add a lot of charismatic personality to front the band, divide business responsibilities, designate a manager, build a website, put together an electronic press kit, take publicity photos, and start spreading the word. This all sounds easy enough, right?

You put together a couple dozen tunes. Rehearse and rehearse some more and you have a band for hire.

Not only does your band’s name need to ‘stand the test of time,’ your band should be able to endure the ups and downs, ins and outs, of show biz. The Rolling Stones, U2, The Four Tops and ZZ Top are a few of the groups who have weathered the storms together. The oldest band, The Blind Boys of Alabama, have only one original member – but when you begin in 1937, one is better than nothing.

We are fortunate to have one of those remarkable groups right here in Shreveport-Bossier City that has been entertaining audiences all over Louisiana for 23 years. Caravan is a name you are sure to recognize. A team of world-class musicians with decades of combined experience, Caravan is made up of five mem-

bers with additional musicians that can be added for larger venues. The band’s set list will fit any occasion including a dynamic selection of party favorites from the disco era right up to the current Top 40 Hits.

Mark Drews has performed with bands across the country. He and his bass guitar provide the energetic groove that Caravan is known for.

Travis Jordan is a graduate of The Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles. He has played with several local bands and can play any genre. He provides vocals for the band as well.

Lead vocalist, Jessica Jane’t, began singing at an early age. She takes her inspiration from R&B, Jazz, Country, Dance and Rock.

With her energy and musical ability, to say she is the “eye candy” for the group would be insulting.

She is beautiful, yes! But her talent is her best asset.

Other band members include Eric Craig, whose soulful vocals are the perfect complement to the Caravan sound. Horns are frequently added to round out the sound with Kenny Alderman and Cory Joy Craig on the saxophone and Paul Tinker on the trumpet. Mark Michell pops in from time to time with his trumpet for select events. Mark is an internationally renowned music educator, also plays the bass guitar, and is the author of a Hal Leonard educational book. He is founder of LowEndUniversity.com, an interactive online school for bass guitar. He is kind of a big deal.

Habits for a Better Physique So, you want to get build a better physique? These seven habits are easy to implement in your everyday lifestyle and will help get you healthy and fit for life.

Being fit and healthy doesn’t mean you have to resign yourself to working out for hours a day and eating nothing but chicken and steamed broccoli for every meal. In fact, there are several more effective (and less painful!) habits you can adopt today that will not only help you get in shape in the short term but will help you stay that way for the long run as well.

1. Stop making excuses. They’ve all been said. You’re too busy to go to the gym. It takes too much time to pack a healthy lunch. It’s too hard to find something healthy to eat out.

All of these excuses are valid in their own way, and yes, we’ve all been there. But if you really want to get—and stay—fit and healthy, you have to learn to give up your excuses and start making your health and fitness a top priority today.

2. Make sleep a priority. If you want to sleep well, you need to maintain a consistent schedule. And this starts with waking up at the same time, every single day. (Yes, even on weekends!).

When you sleep, growth hormones are released and protein synthesis occurs—vital for muscle repair and growth. This is the kind of recovery you need so you can hit up the gym and train again and again.

3. Plan your meals. If you’re rushing about deciding what to eat, you’re more likely to reach for a not-sohealthy quick and easy option. Take an hour or two to plan your meals for the week. You could meal prep a variety of healthy breakfasts, lunches and dinners to help you stay on track and within your calorie goals.

4. Find ways to actually enjoy your veggies. Vegetables are packed with important nutrients that

keep your body healthy, and their fiber content also helps fill you up. So if you don’t love a plain salad, find ways to make your veggies interesting—roast them with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper; toss them in a flavorful stir fry; or blend them into a juice so you don’t even know they’re there. If you don’t despise them, you’re much more likely to eat vegetables on a regular basis.

5. Hydrate. Proper hydration is key is to staying lean and losing fat. Not only can dehydration affect you physically, the mental impact is just as damaging.

Instead, try following the 80/20 strategy—eat healthy around 80% of the time, then let yourself have some treats here and there. Just make sure they’re really good ones!

To sum up ... It’s all a matter of consistency, and if you can switch up your routine with these seven habits, you’ll be well on your way to your ideal body shape. Take it slowly at first and until some of these habits are formed, and then try introducing another one.

Increasing your water intake is an effective way to boost feelings of fullness which can help you stop overeating.

It also ensures your body is in the right state to function properly and metabolize fat for energy.

6. Walk more. Do you know the minimum number of steps you should walk every day? It’s 10,000 to be precise— which works out to around five miles. If you can hit around this mark daily, then you can consider yourself an active person. If not, you might fall in the sedentary category.

7. Don’t always deprive yourself. Although it may seem counterintuitive, striving to always be ‘perfect’ with your nutrition is actually not a good long-term strategy to get or stay in shape. Depriving yourself of dessert and all the foods you love will only result in a binge of those very same foods when your willpower is having a moment of weakness.

STOP to Human Trafficking

H

uman trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery, and many people have the misconception that these victims are kidnapped and transported across borders. Although some victims are brought in or taken out of Louisiana, the majority are “home-grown” cases by a relative or someone familiar. The victims “may live in our neighborhoods and go to our schools,” says Laurie McGehee, Chief Probation Office for the Caddo Parish Juvenile Court and Director of FREE: The Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition of Northwest Louisiana.

The traffickers are individuals selling a child for sex in their home, neighborhood, hotel, etc., in exchange for money, drugs, a place to stay, etc. Traffickers use all sorts of manipulative ways to lure victims, often “grooming” them first. They target mainly girls (but boys also) who are vulnerable and who may not have their basic needs being met. The traffickers may start by purchasing food, paying the electricity bill, and being helpful and kind, says McGehee. There may be a romantic relationship, or promises of money or jobs that keeps the victims dependent on the trafficker. Sometimes the situation can become violent.

The Community Response Team found that the most common risk factor to becoming a victim was the lack of parental supervision/control. Closely following behind were a history of running away, risky sexual behavior, truancy, and having an older boyfriend/girlfriend.

Louisiana is a “safe harbor state” and does not prosecute victims under 18 as criminals. It’s not as easy for those 10 and over, because there needs to be proven “force, fraud, or coercion” to meet the human trafficking definition and prevent prosecution.

The current efforts to combat human trafficking in Louisiana started right here in Caddo Parish. What they were seeing in the Juvenile Court led to the creation of the FREE Coalition in NWLA. The Coalition is dedicated to the restoration and empowerment of victims and survivors and to ending human trafficking in Northwest Louisiana by empowering coalition members to provide the best quality service, educating the community and effecting change in policy.

McGehee is a true champion of the cause, and was influential in creating a specialized intensive unit focusing on restorative justice to help victims heal as well as establishing the first specialty court in Louisiana for human trafficking cases, called Star Court, in Caddo Parish.

There is a training program to build awareness of human trafficking which they’ve conducted in the Caddo and Bossier school districts. The free training is available and advantageous to law enforcement, businesses, and others. “Our training team will go anywhere, anytime.” Passionate about getting the word out, McGehee often travels at her own expense.

The Governor and First Lady became aware of the efforts in Caddo Parish. Today, there is an Office of Human Trafficking Prevention in the Governor’s office and a statewide effort— FREE: The Coalition to End Human Trafficking in Louisiana.

Woman finds relief from debilitating painful spine fracture thanks to balloons and cement

Nancy is one of more than 10 million Americans with osteoporosis, a disease marked by porous, brittle bones that can break more easily than healthy bones. Women over 50 have a 1-in-2 chance of breaking a bone due to osteoporosis.1

Osteoporosis is sometimes called a “silent disease” because it has no symptoms before a fracture occurs.2 That’s what happened to Nancy.

“I was walking in a parking lot, and I stepped on something that tripped me up,” says Nancy, 73, “and I fell very hard.”

The fall caused Nancy severe pain.

“I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t do anything, I was basically housebound and couch-bound, I couldn’t drive, nothing.”

Other risks include infection; leakage of bone cement into the muscle and tissue surrounding the spinal cord and nerve injury that can, in rare instances, cause paralysis; leakage of bone cement into the blood vessels resulting in damage to the blood vessels, lungs, and/or heart.

Nancy said she had a dramatic improvement in her pain.

“I was able to exercise in the pool, and I was able to drive again and resume my normal activities: grocery shop, the usual. I would absolutely recommend Balloon Kyphoplasty to someone who needs it.”

Nancy says she finally broke down and told her husband to take her to the emergency room.

“I said, ‘Please, X-ray my spine!’”

The ER doctors found the source of Nancy’s unrelenting pain: a compression fracture of her T9 vertebra – in other words, a broken back.

Nancy went to see an interventional radiologist who ordered an MRI to get a better look at Nancy’s spine. Because her fracture was still acute and her pain was a 10 out of 10, the radiologist recommended she undergo Balloon Kyphoplasty (BKP).

Balloon Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of spinal fractures due to osteoporosis, cancer, or non-cancerous tumors. The radiologist punctured Nancy’s back with a needle to insert a tiny balloon into the damaged vertebra. He then used a pump to inflate the balloon and restore the original height of the vertebra. Then he injected acrylic bone cement into the balloon to create an internal cast to repair the fracture.

The procedure takes only about an hour. It typically requires only local anesthesia, and it’s often done on an outpatient basis in a clinic or office.

Medtronic developed Balloon Kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive procedure that reduces and stabilizes VCF related to osteoporosis, cancer or non-cancerous tumors. Since the initial technology launched in 1998, Medtronic has developed better balloons, an improved cement delivery system and added access tools shown to reduce hand radiation exposure for the surgeon. Thomas will become the next President & CEO of the organization, effective March 1. Thomas will be the first woman and first African American to lead UWNWLA. She currently serves as Vice President of Community Investments & Operations at UWNWLA. Thomas brings more than 20 years of nonprofit leadership experience to this role, including work in foundations and grant-making organizations, fundraising, program development, and management. Thomas has served on the boards of the Committee for a Better New Orleans/Metropolitan Area Commission, Young Leadership Council, and Forum 35. She currently serves on the Executive Committee for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.- Sigma Rho Omega Chapter, the Advisory Board for the Greater Shreveport Chamber’s Leadership Program, and AFP North Louisiana Board.

A national search was conducted for the President & CEO position that attracted 37 candidates. After several interviews, Thomas was chosen by a selection committee made up of five UWNWLA board members. For the next three months, Thomas will be working alongside retiring UWNWLA President & CEO Dr. Bruce Willson to prepare for her induction. Thomas graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Northwestern State University. After graduating, she started her nonprofit career at Shreveport Green as an AmeriCorps Crew Leader. Thomas then relocated to New Orleans to assist with the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s rebuilding efforts after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. She later served as the community specialist and program analyst for the AARP Foundation, the charitable affiliate of AARP that serves vulnerable individuals 50 and older by creating and advancing solutions that help them build economic opportunity and social connectedness. Thomas also served as an Executive Director for Dress for Success New Orleans and as the donor services officer for the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, where she managed 19 national and local scholarships.

LSU SHREVEPORT GRADUATE STUDENTS WIN INTERNATIONAL MARKET STUDY COMPETITION A team of three LSUS MBA students won the 7th Annual STR Market Study Competition earning a $1,000 cash prize. The international event was hosted by the STR SHARE Center in ear-

ly November 2021. Competing in the graduate division, the LSUS team had three online graduate students from different states: Stephen Bickel, Derek McCrory, and Holden Murray.

Dr. Minsun Kim, an LSUS Assistant Professor of Management and Marketing, was the faculty advisor and coach.

Competitors included 26 undergraduate and 11 graduate teams representing 35 schools from 11 countries. Each team was asked to analyze various live data and information from the hospitality and tourism industries to then present findings to a panel of senior-level industry judges. LSUS’s presentation focused on Los Angeles, California.

“I am thrilled that LSUS graduate teams performed so well last year (2nd place) and this year (1st place),” Dr. Kim said. “I am very proud of our students who converted the live hotel data into meaningful and fantastic presentations. We have had many discussions via Zoom and email. It was indeed challenging but enjoyable. I was very fortunate to work with these talented MBA students. I am thankful for LSUS’s support.”

LSUS won second place last year in its first appearance in the competition, and it included 37 undergraduate and 13 graduate teams representing 44 colleges and universities across 17 countries. Brandi Chambless, Ryan Dickerson, and Nicole McVey were the inaugural team with a presentation focused on Tokyo hospitality amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and the anticipated 2020 Olympics.

Dr. Kim and her teams spend months practicing and training for the competition. The event serves as the next step after completing the Hospitality Analytics course, which provides an opportunity to earn two industry certifications— Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA) and Certification in Advanced Hotel and Tourism Analytics (CAHTA).

UNITED WAY OF NWLA HOSTED FIFTH ANNUAL DAY OF SERVICE WITH CADDO SCHOOLS United Way of Northwest Louisiana (UWNWLA) partnered with Caddo Parish Public Schools to host its fifth annual district-wide volunteer day for students, parents, educators, and more. Volunteers consisted of 19 teams representing K-12 Caddo schools that partnered with a nonprofit agency across Bossier and Caddo parishes. Together, the teams completed three in-person projects and 16 collection drives. Their efforts yielded more than 8,028 essential items and made an impact of $13,075 in economic support.

During Caddo’s Day of Service, 20 volunteers completed 74 hours of community service while learning about civic needs.

Volunteers are the backbone of nonprofit organizations because nonprofits often do not have the financial resources or manpower to hire outside help for upkeep; that’s where volunteers come in. “We know participation of a single student group and their team captain makes a significant impact during our Day of Service events,” said Community Engagement & Creative Coordinator Harper McKnight. “This fall, multiple teams from high schools, such as Captain Shreve, Green Oaks, and Southwood, chose to go the extra mile. With four additional teams on board, our volunteers multiplied the opportunity to give back.”

WINNERS OF THE 2021 AMERICAN ROSE CENTER INTERNATIONAL ROSE TRIALS The Best Roses of the Trials were awarded on October 30, 2021. It was the First Annual Rose Trials Awards Presentation for the American Rose Center, which followed the morning’s Celebrity Judging – the final judging of 2019 rose entries.

Rose trials have been a long-held tradition especially in Europe. Today, there are 28 Rose Trials locations in 16 countries around the world, including the U.S., where rose breeders offer their finest rose introductions to be grown in trial grounds for at least two years before winners are announced.

The American Rose Center initiated its Rose Trials in 2019 as a goal of the Garden’s master plan and the Great Garden Restoration Project. The site of the Trials is the magnificent Windsounds Carillon Tower, a 30’ tall sculpture within the grounds of America’s Rose Garden. After the roses in trials were judged for two years, five times per year, the time came for final judging and presentation of awards.

Top Winner of the ARC GOLD MEDAL for the Dr. J. Horace McFarland Award for Most Outstanding Rose of the Trials was the Grandiflora Rose ‘SWEET SPIRIT’. Breeder of the rose is Alain Meilland of the House of Meilland, France. Introducer of the rose is Star Roses & Plants. The rose, classed as a Grandiflora, is described as “deep pink, mauve reverse. Strong, damask, fruity, sweet fragrance. Up to 35 petals. Average bloom diameter 3.75”.

Blooms are large, very double, in small cluster form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.” (House of Meilland) Foliage is dark green and semi-glossy. Plant height is 3-4 feet. ‘Sweet Spirit’ was awarded the Jane Owen & Quintin T. Hardtner, Jr. Award for Best Grandiflora Rose before taking the Gold Medal and sweeping these additional top awards: Virginia K. Shehee Award for Most Fragrant Rose; William J. Radler Award for Most Disease Resistant Rose; Dr. Joseph & Marion Klima Award for Best Garden Impression Rose.

Other award-winning roses were: American Rose Society President’s Award for Best Hybrid Tea Rose: ‘SWEET MADEMOISELLE’, bred by Alain Meilland for the House of Meilland; introduced by Star Roses & Plants. This garden beauty is described as “old fashioned,” with 48-68 petals, fragrant, large to 5” in a luscious rose-pink with orange-pink shades. The bush is large, up to 72” tall and healthy.

Dr. Charles & Carolyn Beaird Award for Best Climbing Rose: ‘HIGH WIRE FLYER’, bred by Will Radler; introduced by Star Roses & Plants. The bloom is described as “hot pink” with very slight fragrance. Foliage is dark green, semi-glossy and very healthy. Already a winner in the American Rose Trials for Sustainability, it has received a rating of 8.5 (of 10.0) in the 2022 Handbook for Selecting Roses.

Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin recently announced that Louisiana was ranked in the top 10 states for election integrity by the Heritage Foundation. The 2021 Election Integrity Scorecard, which was released last week, ranks Louisiana seventh in the nation. Scores were calculated from 12 different categories, including voter ID implementation, absentee ballot management, vote counting practices and verification of citizenship. The Heritage Foundation Election Integrity Scorecard compares states’ election laws that affect election security and integrity.

SHREVEPORT BUSINESS WINS STARTUP PRIZE 2021: FOCUS ON HEALTH J. Steven Alexander, PhD, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at LSU Health Shreveport, and his company, Arganum Transplant Solutions, was named the winner of Startup Prize 2021: Focus on Health. Arganum Transplant Solutions aims to transform the organ preservation market by providing a method to convert ‘marginal’ donor organs into ‘acceptable/ optimal’ organs by preventing post-implant inflammation which causes transplantation failure, called ‘delayed graft failure.’ Arganum Transplant Solutions was one of four finalists for this year’s Startup Prize, which focused on health and health innovation startup companies. To qualify for the finals, entrepreneurs needed to have a health-focused business, such as a medical or surgical device, therapeutic, health technology, health service, or drug research.

STICKING with your RESOLUTIONS

e do new year’s resolutions kinda backwards. At the end of one year we make a list of the ways we aim to improve in the coming year. We write it down, make it look pretty and tell everyone about it.

All that’s not so bad, really. But then we come to the point where we start to do it wrong. That’s when we put those resolutions up on a trophy shelf, to look at and admire, like we’ve already actually done something.

That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.

Nevertheless, we are bombarded every year at this time by this statistic: more than half of all New Year’s resolutions fail. In fact, a FranklinCover study back in 2007 found that a third of resolutions won’t make it through January.

The problem is that we use “resolve” in “New Year’s Resolution” as a verb. We identify a problem, find a solution and decide on a course of action. But that should be where the fun begins, not ends.

You see, the resolve in a New Year’s Resolution should be a noun, not a verb. It should be the grit and determination that what you have determined to do will happen, regardless of the cost.

Ƚ It’s about progress, not perfection: Losing 80 pounds is hard. I know. So is any other resolutions worth going after. If resolutions were easy, how much would they really change us. Break down a huge resolution into small goals spaced throughout the year. And don’t forget to chart your progress and celebrate the victories along the way. A Forbes magazine report suggests keeping a gratitude journal to keep you pressing forward through the difficult times.

And that’s what it’s all about. Ƚ You don’t have to go it alone: Why do we write down resolutions? For many, it’s just another piece of paper to crumple up and throw away by Valentine’s Day. But if you write resolutions down and are brave enough to share them with the right people, then you have both the accountability and support you need to stay on track.

So, where can you start imagining a better you in 2022?

Here are a few tips: Ƚ

Look back and acknowledge your past mistakes: A Harvard Health report suggests analyzing your track record of failed resolutions to determine why they didn’t work. Big, hairy, audacious goals are great, but they can be discouraging if they are too big. By understanding what went wrong and forgiving yourself, you can learn from the past and move forward.

Ƚ

Balance the scales: Sometimes we are reluctant to let go of a bad behavior because there’s something we enjoy about that behavior — like eating pie, lots and lots of pie. The Harvard Health report says balancing the pluses and minuses of the behavior increases the chances of succeeding at making a change. The report also suggests finding a way to indulge in enjoyable aspects of an unhealthy behavior without the behavior itself. I’m not sure how you do that with pie. But if you enjoy your smoke breaks, take the break without the cigarette.

Make sure the resolution is your own: All your friends going vegan and signing up for yoga in 2022. That might be great for them. But is it right for you? Resolutions are personal. They should be about becoming the best version of you possible. It’s not the time to go along with the crowd.

Ƚ

Set the right goal: It’s not enough to tell yourself you’re going to “lose weight” or “read more.” Resolutions should include a definitive goal with a detailed plan to accomplish that goal. You’re a smart person.

Your resolutions also should be SMART — specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.

Whether you have a list of life-changing goals, a single resolution or a word you want to define this year, it’s going to take determination, focus and hard work. But in the end, discovering a new you in the new year is worth every effort.

You can start prevention now by simply knowing your risk factors.

These range from inactivity and heredity to obesity, smoking, high blood pressure and high blood lipid and cholesterol levels.

Once you identify the areas at which you may be at risk, you can make small lifestyle modifications — such as change in diet, increased exercise and smoking cessation — to lessen your chance of heart disease. In addition, you can request a vascular screening, which can check for disease of the arteries, veins and lymph vessels as well as blood disorders that affect circulation. Screenings take less than 15 minutes and can detect your risk of stroke, aneurysms and poor circulation.

CLOSING THE GAP ON EQUALITY Today’s economy and tomorrow’s well-being depend on innovations in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the four fields is collectively known as STEM. Despite women accounting for more than half of the college educated workforce, a troubling gender gap persists in STEM careers. Women, especially women of color, make up only a small share of scientists and engineers.

The American Heart Association is working to close the equality gap in STEM through a “Bringing STEM to Life” educational program where students learn about jobs they might not have known existed and walk away feeling like a whole new world of STEM has been revealed—a world in which they can truly love what they do and make a tremendous impact. The CCDS, LSU Health Shreveport and the AHA joined together to host 48 students from Huntington High School on the medical school campus for the first program in December 2021.

act: Twice as many women in the United States die of heart disease and stroke than from all forms of cancer. Yet many women believe that cancer is more of a threat and only a mere 13 percent of women say they believe that heart disease and stroke are the greatest health threats to women.

RESEARCH: THE CORNERSTONE OF THE AHA The American Heart Association not only raises awareness but also funding for research.

Funding research is a cornerstone of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) lifesaving mission—a pillar upon which the AHA was founded and a key to our future. The AHA is the largest notfor-profit funding source for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease research next to the federal government. Research applications are carefully weighed and selected by teams of scientists and healthcare professionals who volunteer for the association.

The AHA has funded 14 Nobel Prize winners and several

important medical breakthroughs, including techniques and standards for CPR, the first artificial heart valve, implantable pacemakers, cholesterol inhibitors, microsurgery and drug-coated stents.

The AHA has invested $4.8 billion in research since 1949. Current AHA-funded research projects total $436.1 million and support 1,379 projects.

In 2020-21, the association funded 598 new projects, totaling $135.8 million.

Last year 1,367 dedicated peer review volunteers evaluated 2,560 proposals for funding!

This past year, funding which totaled $1,387,788 was awarded to the following grant recipients at the LSU Health Center for Cardiovascular Diseases and Science: Reggie Lee, Hung Wen Lin, Celeste Wu, Shenuarin Bhuiyan, MD, Anthony W. Orr, and Mabruka Alfaidi.

During February, everyone concerned about heart disease — America’s No. 1 cause of death among women — is encouraged to wear red.

The American Heart Association chose “Go Red for Women” because red is a symbol for love, passion and life. The Go Red for Women campaign embodies it all.

Through initiatives like Go Red for Women and National Wear Red Day, women (and men) in Northwest Louisiana the tools they need to overcome heart disease and stroke. Our community’s most respected business, healthcare, civic and philanthropic leaders unite at the GO RED dinner on Tuesday, February 8, to raise funds for continued research, education and outreach.

Go Red for Women efforts are yearround and are supported by many volunteer leaders. CHRISTUS Shreveport-Bossier Health will have a wellness expo giving attendees an opportunity to Check in on their heart health.

The Go Red for Women campaign has gained national momentum toward heightening awareness during its quest to educate women on the signs of heart disease.

of your hometown

Lake View was not a town built for tourism—unless you were maybe a chicken. Lots of coops. If you were an egg-laying chicken, you had it made. If you were a fryer, not so much.

Lake View. Farmers lived here, and the smell of horse manure, pig poop, and diesel did not offend.

A cow looking at you with a blank stare meant milk and money.

Green tobacco looked like new dollar bills on stalks. Corn and soybeans were school clothes and new Ford LTDs. It was a town of simplicity and beauty, as long as you saw the pretty sides of dirt and laughter and hair curlers, denim and bandanas and halter tops.

Heading east on No. 9 would take you right to Myrtle Beach, 43 miles away. Most of the town’s summer traffic was beach traffic, folks heading to The Strand who wouldn’t know a soybean from an ear of corn. Most of the town’s winter traffic was non-existent, not counting a loose mule or horse or bull.

here were we? … Oh yeah. I remember. We were talking about hometowns. Like opinions, we all have one.

Dogs were everywhere, and you knew their names and they knew your face. When the times called for it, both of us knew how to get by on scraps.

No town is perfect, because people are growing up in them. And if you haven’t noticed, people are…well, we’re a strange and unpredictable bunch.

The most recent census counted 843 people in the city limits.

There were eight times that in the county. Dillon, the county seat, had more than 3,000 people. Dillion had a hospital and a Hardee’s Hamburgers and everything. You could buy Levis or Wranglers in Dillon.

Do you love your hometown? If not, have you at least come to peace with it? Our hometowns have pimples, but they deserve a break, because they would be fault-free… f we were.

Maybe your hometown is Shreveport or Bossier City. Mansfield. Benton.

Blanchard. Doubtful it’s Lake View, South Carolina, where I learned how to milk a cow and drive a tractor and throw a baseball.

None of our cradles are alike, but all of them have similarities. And that’s where the unity and charm is.

Somebody served you French fries in a red-and-white-checkered paper “boat” and a milkshake in a paper cup that read “Milk Line” and “Syrup Line.” Mrs. Sarah Joe or Betty Sue Moody or Mrs. Eutha or, if it was an extra-lucky day, Mrs. Edna Barfield or Mrs. Albertine Sanderson served me mine with hands born to handle Dixie cups and dairy.

You had a Bobbie Cook who taught you how to write cursive, as she did for me. You had your dog; I had Sport. Buried him in centerfield behind the school, one of his favorite places. Mine too.

If you have never written a love letter to the town that raised you, think about giving her that. You both deserve it.

North Louisiana is my adopted home, and what a lucky break it’s been.

But Lake View is momma.

My sheriff was Zimp Ivy. (I’ll wait while you come up with a better sheriff’s name…) I can see him now at the west end of Main Street, hat over his eyes, chair propped against the jail’s brick wall at just the right napping angle, contented, a picture of peace and tranquility—if everyone would just act right…

You couldn’t buy a pair of Levis in Lake View. The only name brands for sale had names like Firestone and Esso. And Corn Flakes at Mr. Kermit’s IGA. Sure, you could buy shoes and shirts and pants, but none of them were made by companies that had commercials on television and radio. You went to Dillon to get those things, or 44 miles west to Florence, which had a mall and even chain stores.

What Lake View did have was a Dairy Maid, a tiny textile mill, five churches catering to your major denominations, and little ambition beyond being able to sell the next crop and enjoy Sunday afternoons sitting under a ceiling fan on a porch, talking with people who loved you, maybe dozing after eating dead chicken.

It also had a high school that won state championships with the regularity of a man on Metamucil.

Zimp Ivy had been born here, practically in khaki. In his 60s during my boyhood, he’d been sheriff since his 27th birthday when he was named interim, then elected, after the previous sheriff had died in the line of duty. At age 87, Sheriff Mo Rogers had just keeled over at his desk trying to fill out an expense report after attending the state sheriff’s convention in Columbia.

The coffin was colored khaki.

Maybe khaki’s the color of my hometown to an outsider. But not to me. To me, Lake View’s a kaleidoscope. In your heart, if you think about it, bet yours is too.

Look for the good. Look for the pretty colors.
