529 Plans

I

f you have children or grandchildren, you may already have invested in, or at least considered, a 529 plan, one of the most popular college-savings vehicles. But you might be interested to know that a 529 plan can now be used not only to save for college, but also to pay off college loans.

As you know, when you invest in a 529 savings plan, your money is professionally managed and you have a variety of investment options from which to choose. Your earnings grow tax- deferred and withdrawals are free from federal taxes, provided the money is used for qualified higher education expenses. In some states, withdrawals are also exempt from state taxes. (529 plan withdrawals not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income taxes and a 10% IRS penalty on the earnings.)

Until now, you could only use a 529 plan to help pay for col-

lege or trade school. (You can also use it for K-12 expenses, but not all states offer tax breaks for K-12 savers.) However, under recently passed legislation, you can now potentially use up to $10,000 from a 529 account to repay federal and most private student loans taken out by your beneficiary.

This $10,000 is a lifetime limit, applicable to each beneficiary, so if you have 529 plans for three children/grandchildren, you’ve got $30,000 to pay for school or pay back student loans. (The new law also allows 529 funds to be used to pay for certain apprenticeships, which typically combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction, often at a community college.)

Of course, you may end up using all your 529 funds just to pay those college bills, which can be quite high. But if you have several children, each with a 529 plan, and one of them attends a less ex- pensive school and doesn’t need the full amount in their plan, you could use the money to help

pay off some of the other siblings’ student debts. Or if a student graduates early from college or receives more scholarships than expected, you could end up with some leftover 529 plan funds, which could then be used to repay student loans.

If you are thinking you’ll use 529 plan funds to help pay back student loans, you’ll need to keep a couple of things in mind. First, you can’t “double dip” with federal education tax benefits – if you pay student loan interest with tax-free 529 plan earnings, you can’t also take the student loan interest deduction. And second, some states limit use of 529 plans to tuition, fees, text- books and supplies. In other words, these states may not recognize student loan payments (or apprenticeship costs) as eligible expenses – which means if you’re in one of these states, your 529 plan dollars that go to student loan repayments or apprenticeship costs could be subject to state income taxes and penalties, or possibly repayment of state tax breaks. In any case, you’ll need to consult with your tax advisor before using 529 plan funds for loans or apprenticeships.

A 529 plan has always been a good way to help get your children or grandchildren to college – and now it can help them pay off some debts when they leave.

Lost in culture. Lost in fun. Lost in the beauty of nature. You certainly will get lost when you embark on a journey through the small towns of North Louisiana and Arkansas. See what lies ahead as you drive down backcountry roads, soak in hot springs, hike across suspension bridges and cruise through historic districts—all while sampling the divine flavors and cuisine of southern Arkansas and north Louisiana.

Take a drive through the historic downtown. Keep an eye out for statues of blues legend Huddie “Leadbelly” Ledbetter and Elvis Presley, and the “Once in a Millennium Moon” mural. Before you head north to Arkansas, check out a few local wonders. Shreveport has plenty of options you probably never even knew about.

Traveling Precautions Due to COVID As summer revs up, many families who’ve planned vacations and long-anticipated reunions are left wondering whether it’s safe to travel during the coronavirus outbreak. The decision to travel under these trying times is a personal one; your personal risk depends on your age and health and the prevalence of the COVID virus in the area of travel. If you are still planning to go on that long-awaited summer vacation, remember to take as many precautions to stay as healthy as possible. Many areas continue to restrict the activities described in this article, so check all available resources to make an educated decision when traveling. As we have all seen, what might be a low-risk region now can drastically change within a couple of days.

Historic Border Town: Texarkana, Arkansas The quirky border town of Texarkana, Arkansas blends seamlessly with its twin, Texarkana, Texas, and is imbued with the flavors, sounds and history of both states. Ragtime music has roots here—acclaimed composer Scott Joplin was a Texarkana native and there’s a mural on the Texas side of downtown that celebrates him.

Just a few blocks away is a remnant of the city’s colorful past, the Ace of Clubs House. This 1885 Italianate Victorian home built in the shape of a club was, according to legend, financed by a winning poker hand. The Arkansas Municipal Auditorium may no longer be around, but the restored 1924-era Perot Theatre is worth visiting.

Of course before you leave you’ll need to walk the Arkansas-Texas divide along State Line Avenue, and behold the only post office that sits in two states. Plant your feet back on the Arkansas side and continue on your journey.

Shreveport-Bossier City: Ripe for Sightseeing Shreveport is many things. One thing it is not is hurried. Kick back and take your time relishing all the sights right in your own backyard. Start and end your trip with restaurants, entertainment and outdoor activities that are hallmarks of the Shreveport-Bossier area. Dine and drink at one of the many craft brew pubs and eateries spe-

It’s the only place in the U.S. where you can dig for, and keep, any diamonds you find. This eroded crater yielded its first find in 1906 and is still turning out sparklers today.

Soothe your aching muscles in Hot Springs, the next stop on the itinerary.

Hot Springs, Arkansas: Mountain Scenery and Historic Bathhouses Hot Springs has loads of charm and is packed with bed-and-breakfasts and spas that sprang up from the olden-days obsession with thermal springs.

Established in 1832, this quaint mountain town features Hot Springs National Park, one of the USA’s most surprising urban parks. Thermal hot springs have been luring visitors to this area for decades, and it continues to flourish with activity at eight historic bathhouses along Bathhouse Row. You can soak in thermal pools at Quapaw Baths and Spa or tour Fordyce Bathhouse Visitor Center and Museum to learn about the geological origins of these bubbling springs. After a therapeutic bath, venture on an invigorating hike up the loop trail to Hot Springs Mountain. Don’t forget to climb the Mountain Tower to ponder the beauty of the Ouachita Mountains.

Back on Bathhouse Row, enjoy more shopping, people watching and exploring. Much to the public’s delight, the Superior Bathhouse Brewery and Distillery, a classic revival bathhouse, also houses a brewery and distillery.

Lodging in town is versatile—everything from camp sites at Gulpha Gorge to the lovely and historic 1890 Williams House Inn—so make sure to stay a night or two.

Pine Bluff, Arkansas: Natural Discoveries and Country Music History From Hot Springs, head east along forested roads and through a series of tiny towns before you arrive in rustic Pine Bluff. It’s ideally located for exploring the Arkansas River and Bayou Bartholomew—the world’s longest bayou.

For a glimpse of the native species of the Arkansas Delta, check out the Delta Rivers Nature Center, which features hiking trails and an aquarium fashioned after an oxbow lake, where you can watch turtles, snakes and alligators. Venture downtown to spot more than a dozen murals depicting the town’s storied past.

Next, make your way to the Arkansas Railroad Museum. Jump aboard a caboose, passenger car and a train at one of the state’s largest locomotive exhibits at this free and interactive museum. Add the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame—located in the Pine Bluff Convention Center—to your list of must-sees, where a life-size animatronic statue of Johnny Cash greets you. This tiny museum is packed with cool exhibits.

Get outdoors at Cane Creek State Park where you can bike, hike or walk through a trail system linked by three suspension bridges. Before you get back on the road, grab lunch or a sweet treat at Lybrand’s Bakery—a local institution since 1946, serving scrumptious baked goods and savory entrees like specialty sandwiches and quiche.

El Dorado, Arkansas: Hidden Gem for Music and Art Just under two hours south of Pine Bluff venture to El Dorado—home to Musicfest El Dorado, a two-day concert event in September that’s putting this town on music lovers’ radar. This small town boasts a thriving arts and music scene, and it just takes a visit to the Murphy Arts District—or MAD—to see why.

Swing by cool art galleries and music halls, that lead you to the amphitheater, a stellar music hub known for both regional and national acts. Drop by the Griffin Restaurant, a modern farm-to-table restaurant, for some sustenance. It isn’t every day you can try Mr. Lawrence’s Hushpuppies drizzled with Arkansas honey and sea salt.

Stay in the heart of the fun downtown at Union Square Guest Quarters, a chic but laid-back bed & breakfast.

Before you leave town, plan to spend some time at South Arkansas Arboretum State Park. Stroll paths lined with beautyberry bushes, beech, and poplar trees on five serene hectares. Autumn here explodes with fall colors, while winter surprises with camellia blooms. It’s a gorgeous retreat where you can take some time to reflect on your trip.

West Monroe, Louisiana: Historic Town with a Pop Culture Twist Drive southbound back across the border into Louisiana to West Monroe, where you’ll explore what’s become known as duck country along the Ouachita River.

Made famous in the reality show Duck Dynasty, West Monroe is enjoying its newfound notoriety. Family matriarch and expert baker Miss Kay has teamed up with her granddaughter to create Miss Kay’s Sweets & Eats, located in Antique Alley. Hard to resist cowboy cookies, gooey sweet cinnamon rolls and pralines are top sellers.

Don’t miss the Cotton Port Historic District on the riverfront in downtown West Monroe. Check out kids’ clothes at The Mother Hen or pick up authentic Louisiana hot sauces at The Rustique Gator.

For a taste of Louisiana wine, head to Landry Vineyards, located about 15 minutes from the historic district in West Monroe’s hill country. This family-owned winery is the place to be for tastings, tours and its ongoing concert series. Make sure to head home with a souvenir— perhaps a bottle of Jay D’s Blanc Du Bois Dry, a collaboration between Jay Ducote, a Food Network Star, and Jeff Landry, the vineyard owner.

Road Kit This is just one of the many routes you can take as you venture through Arkansas (we’ll explore the northern half of the state another time). This trip best done April-October, as winter months bring cold weather and rain.

Many dogs and cats live in loving homes along with their humans and enjoy a heaping share of our love and generosity! Recent pet statistics show that Americans spent 78.52 billion dollars on pet care, comfort, and pleasure during the year of 2018. Knowing that people spend so much on pet care should alleviate any guilt pet parents may feel whenever they pamper their pets. This data and a few exciting recipes will inspire pet owners to do more to level up the nutritional values in their pet’s food by baking homemade treats and food for their fur babies.

Wheat-Free Roasted Sweet Potato Dog Treats Who says sweet potatoes are strictly a fall food?

Most dogs absolutely love them no matter what time of year it is! Thanks to their high fiber content, sweet potatoes help support a healthy canine digestive system.

Prep Time: 5 mins Cook Time: 45 mins sweet potatoes, 45 mins treats Yields: ~48 cookies

Ingredients: • 2 large Sweet Potatoes • 4 cups oat flour • 2 cups barley flour • 1 cup brown rice flour • 1/4 cup flax seed • 1/4 cup honey • 2-3 cups hot water

Instructions: • Pre-heat oven to 325° F. • Roast Sweet potatoes whole until soft (approximately 45 minutes). Allow to cool, then split potatoes in half and scoop out flesh.

• Combine dry ingredients; add sweet potatoes, honey, and 2 cups of water. Add additional water if required. If the dough is too soft, allow it to rest for 15 minutes.

• Roll to one-quarter inch thickness and cut into desired shapes. Bake for 45 minutes at 300°F. Turn the oven off and leave treats in the oven to allow for curing.

As the saying goes… variety is the spice of life!

Imagine the disappointment you would feel if you were only allowed one type of food for every meal. Just as humans enjoy an awesome array of food flavors prepared with many different cooking methods, pets enjoy various tastes and textures in their meals. Simple ingredients and recipes can bring our furry friends and their owners the joys of fun foods. And as a major bonus for learning to make pet treat creations, you will never be at a loss for gift ideas for the pet owners in your life because you can cook up special and surprising presents for friends who love to please their pets.

In pet language, our four-legged friends tell us that they rate eating good food as one of their all-time favorite experiences. Pet treats are used for simple rewards and also for the very important task of training. New flavors, new textures, new possibilities – may open up a higher level of training for you and your companion. Also, baking pet treats is a great way to expand your knowledge in the kitchen, and can lead you to become a better cook for yourself and your friends and family too! By making pet treats at home, you won’t blend in any mystery ingredients, chemicals, or preservatives that could harm a pet.

But please don’t feed your humans any pet treats unless they insist on a taste test, and don’t be surprised because some people can’t help but taste homemade pet treats. If so, have a good laugh and be sure the ingredients are safe for people before someone takes their first bite.

Once you realize how fun and easy it is to make tasty pet treats at home, you’ll never want to stop. Find out what your pet's favorite flavors are, and try incorporating them into your recipes. With a few experimental taste tests, you can find out which ingredients your pet likes.

For example, before making a treat with peanut butter, give your pet a little taste of the sticky, nutty butter to see if your pet likes it and if the food agrees with their stomach.

This is also a great way to be sure the pet is not allergic to the new food. Please note that according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), there are no known peanut allergies found in dogs. Still, with all food, there is always a minuscule possibility of allergic reactions. And just like any good chef baking new recipes for people, as your pet’s chef, you control the quality and the cost.

Pet treat recipes can be easily modified to suit your pet's health needs.

If you are really into nutrition, you can use information about your pet’s nutritional needs by asking your veterinarian to perform a simple blood test during your pet’s next trip to the vet. Your vet can tell you if your pet has any nutritional deficiencies. The next thing you’ll know, your pet will be healthier and living a happy and longer life because of your efforts! Not only is it fun creating new healthy treat recipes as a hobby that won’t add inches to your waistline, but you can also call yourself an animal nutritionist, pet dietician, or a pet foodologist for fun!

Jumpstart your baking by looking online at the numerous and simple pet treat recipes for your pet species. Many pet food chefs even offer recipes that usually appeal to spe-

cific breeds of cats, dogs, and even pet birds, and most of the recipes are very simple. Once you find the type of treat that you want to make for your beloved animal, remember that you can be creative, and many ingredients can be substituted. Focus on recipes that are simple, fun to make, and healthy for your pet.

Some of the best nutritional recipes could and should include as many bases of your pet’s diet needs as possible. Look for ingredients that include all or some essential nutrients like proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and fiber from ingredients that will provide the vitamins and minerals your pet needs for good nutritional health.

When it comes to baking treats for other types of pets like cats and birds, a whole new world of fun ingredients are on the safe list. Cats are true carnivores and have particular dietary requirements. However, just like dogs, many simple ingredients are toxic to felines if ingested. Ingredients: • 1 cup wholewheat flour • 16oz can tuna in oil (do not drain) • 1 tablespoon oil • 1 egg

Instructions:

˴ Cut a circle and a triangle from the felt.

We used the bottom of the can to trace a perfect circle. ˴ Cut the circle in half. Using glitter glue paint, draw squiggly marks on both halves of the circle. ˴ Put a dot of hot glue at the top of the middle portion of the can and adhere the end of the yarn. Wrap the yarn around the can numerous times. You can use as many colors of yarn as you wish. Secure the end with another dot of hot glue. ˴ Glue the googly eyes in the center of the inside of the bottle tops then glue to the upper portion of the can. With glue, add the felt triangle, long point facing down for the beak. With glue, add the wings with curved sides facing each other.

Add pencils and you’re ready for school.

hether it's in the classroom, online or a combination of both, students and faculty return to school this month, and since the COVID-19 pandemic has taught many to expect a change in plans at any moment, communities everywhere have laid out several models for the school year.

After a spike in COVID-19 cases in Louisiana over the summer and Gov. John Bel Edwards's decision to keep the state in phase 2, Caddo Parish and Bossier Parish Schools pushed the school start date to later in August.

This allowed for more time to prepare, as well as a chance for COVID cases to decline.

Shelronder Williams, a master teacher at Woodlawn High School in Shreveport, had a busy summer learning new strategies and platforms to be implemented this fall. As a master teacher, one of her roles is to train and assist teachers in curriculum for English and social studies.

Most parents and students will see a major change with their school switching from Google Classroom to a digital learning platform called Canvas.

“I think students will adapt well, even more so than us adults,” Williams said. “We're all online teachers now, and we might as well get used to it.”

guidelines and best practices for health precautions. Students and staff will have their temperatures screened each morning. Masks must be worn by all staff and students in grades 3-12, and there will be an increased frequency of cleaning of high-touch surfaces and hand washing.

Schools have installed hand sanitizer stations throughout campuses and some classrooms have sneeze guards.

Local private schools, such as St. Mark's Cathedral School, decided to keep the start date for students set for Aug. 12. Students will receive in-person instruction in the classroom five days a week. In phase 2, classes will be limited to fewer than 25 people. If Louisiana is placed back in phase 1, learning will continue to take place on campus but with fewer than 10 people per class. Phase 1 would also result in a modified schedule for students.

St. Mark's also is following the safety requirements and suggestions of the Louisiana Department of Education, including making hand sanitizer stations available in classrooms and all school entrances. All adults and students in grades 3-8 will be required to wear masks, and students in PS3grade 2 will wear masks for arrival and dismissal, when in the halls and as directed by teachers. School officials also ask that students bring water bottles from home, since they will not be permitted to use shared water fountains.

Bossier Parish Schools and Caddo Parish Schools gave parents the option to enroll their children in virtual learning rather than send them back to the classroom. Earlier in the summer, both school systems polled parents to gain a better understanding of their concerns for Shelronder Williams reopening schools. The results of the Caddo Parish Schools survey (which received approximately 28,000 responses) indicated that 49 percent would send their children to school in the hybrid model and 51 percent would enroll their children in the virtual option.

Technology in the classroom will be used more than ever before, and students learning on the hybrid model will be expected to treat days at home as if they are still in the classroom by tuning in online.

“Caddo has gone above and beyond to ensure that students have devices,” added Williams. “Hybrid will be five days of learning.”

Hand sanitizer will be provided when students load the bus. Health screening is not required before students enter the bus. Windows will be opened as much as possible to increase air flow.

How can parents help prepare their child?

• Create a workspace at home for your child.

Teach your child other good hygiene practices, such as not touching their face and to cough and sneeze in their elbow.

Encourage children to think about other ways to bond and stay connected with classmates and teachers while being physically distanced.

•

When having conversations with your child about the COVID pandemic and returning to school, be calm and reassure them that it's OK to express and communicate negative feelings.

Robert E. Trudeau is unique. With his mop of graying hair and signature round framed glasses, he’s been a fixture around the local arts and culture scene for as long as many can remember.

After 40 years in the Caddo School System, including stints at Herndon, Bethune, Huntington, and Caddo Magnet, where he was an original member of the faculty; he’s embarking on another project to study Betty Virginia Park.

“I’ve been working on my biggest coherent project yet during the quarantine,” he said. “It’s a study of Betty Virginia Park: Bayou Pierre, the historic oaks and cypress trees, the arched bridges, the history of the park as a lake and depot for workboats, packet steamers and wagons filled with cotton bales.”

But his activities aren’t confined to strolling and studying the park, he also hosts perambulations in other locales. “I have Trudeau History Tours which are walking discussions of downtown with an emphasis on historic figures, music, architecture and black life on Texas Avenue.”

“My spiel includes slavery and cotton, the war and post-war Jim Crow era, steamboats, oil and civil rights, music and

He said the tour usually includes a visit inside historic Antioch Baptist Church or the Calanthean Temple. The temple is a significant part of black women’s history in this area. The historic marker outside reveals some of it. “Built 1923 by the Court of Calanthe, an early African-American woman’s organization. Served as the Court of Calanthe’s headquarters for many years as well as housing the offices of Black professionals. Roof Garden at top of building was used for dances, Mardi Gras balls and other events.” Trudeau’s tours often include excursions to Logan Mansion and Oakland Cemetery which are rich deposits of local history. Trudeau describes himself as active in the cultural fabric of his community. “I think of myself as active in the struggle to reconcile Shreveport’s antipathy toward black citizens. And to address the wounds long suffered by African Americans.

If we worked together with more trust and bigger hearts and minds, I think the economy and jobs and achievement in school would improve - and flourish.”

He describes Shreveport as his adopted home. He was born in Massachusetts, and was raised in Louisiana, partially in Napoleonville on Bayou Lafourche. He spent his teens being educated by the Benedictine monks of St. Joseph Seminary in St. Benedict, LA. The abbey is outside of Covington, he said, but few residents of Covington even know where or what it is. He attended the University of New Orleans, which was then LSUNO, and majored in music and food, the perfect preparation for living in the Bayou state.

“So, when I settled in Shreveport it was only a matter of time before Jerry Davenport and I founded the Blanc et Noir Marching Society.” Blanc et Noir is a New Orleans-style marching krewe.

Whether you personally know Trudeau, as most of his former students refer to him, or have never met him, you probably have seen him at cultural and civic events around town.

He is usually armed with his camera and snapping away.

Trudeau has thus become quite a source of visual record keeping over the years for the arts.

FAMILIES HELPING FAMILIES REGION 7

A Family Directed Resource Center for Individuals with Disabilities

W

hen a family member is disabled, it affects every member of the family.

Whether a child’s disability is Down Syndrome, blindness, autism, or one of the many other intellectual, physical, sensory disabilities or mental illnesses, the physically and mentally disabled child needs consistent and constant care. Often, the disabled child’s siblings are involved in caring for the disabled family member from a young age and into adulthood. Siblings are often ignored and turned to for help with their disabled family member.

The siblings can suffer long-lasting emotional effects, and other problems arise within disabled families as untrained children are forced to deal with such difficult situations daily. Siblings and parents of disabled children explain that they live with feelings of sadness, anger, guilt, shame, and too much responsibility. These are a few of the critical reasons why organizations like Families Helping Families (FHF Region 7) came to be beacons of hope with the mission to provide information and referral, education and training, and peer to peer support to individuals with disabilities or special needs and their families.

In the old days, a lack of support forced the parents and siblings of the disabled to live and deal with the discrepancy of their own realities rather than living their lives like conventional families. Chanel Jackson, the Executive Director of Families Helping Families (FHF Region 7), describes the reality for many families, “The hardest part of having a child with a delay of any kind is the fight. The fight for services.

The fight for people to understand who your child is and what they need, and the fight for your child to be included.”

Fortunately, many people of modern times understand the needs of families in these difficult situations. In the early 90’s, families of disabled children partnered with the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council (LDDC) to establish Families Helping Families of Louisiana (FHF). The initiative began at a conference sponsored by the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council in 1988 and focused on community support and services for people with disabilities. The goal of the many young parents who attended the conference was their desire for their disabled children to have full inclusion in their communities.

The results of the conference became a series of great successes, and within just a few years, the LDDC provided funding for a non-profit Families Helping Families Resource Center for each region of the state. Each non-profit center revolves around programs based on the needs of its region.

The FHF members are devoted to a common philosophy focused on the dedication of providing the support necessary for people with disabilities and their family members to successfully live, work, and play in their communities.

Chanel Jackson explains, “Families Helping Families Region 7 is the hidden gem of the Shreveport-Bossier area. We are the only information and resource center in Northwest Louisiana helping families navigate the maze of disability programs and services.” She ensures new family members that, “Families Helping Families Region 7 is here to hold your hand and walk with you.”

The local FHF Region 7 Center serves Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, Desoto, Lincoln, Red River, Natchitoches, Sabine, and Webster. The center is supported by five major sponsors, 100 volunteers, and generous donations from community members who provide a system of support that powers amazing services and programs for 64 families with 400 children all at no cost. The services evolve from the needs of the families and are designed to meet the sensitive, diverse, and changing needs of the people of the Region 7 communities.

SB Magazine enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to interview Chanel Jackson, the powerhouse Executive Director of Families Helping Families for Region 7, and learn more about FHF. Chanel has been dedicated to leading FHF in the Shreveport-Bossier area for over 12 years. She represents and advocates individuals with disabilities and their families as an executive leader in the community, throughout local society, and all public and private platforms. From public relations, fundraising, to training and development of programs, this executive director does it all! Families Helping Families Region 7 continues to advocate and fight the stigma placed upon our families.”

As if leading FHF Region 7 wasn’t impressive enough when we lived in our normal world before the pandemic changed so many critical parts of our lives, now Chanel must continue leading FHF as she carefully considers everyone’s fears about COVID 19. But the good people of FHF continue fulfilling so many critical needs. FHF Region 7 received 10,000 cloth face masks from Governor John Bell Edwards to provide free of charge to individuals with disabilities and their families, the elderly, and anyone with a preexisting health condition in our community. Marijuana Use: The chemicals in marijuana (in particular, tetrahydrocannabinol or THC) pass through your system to your baby and can harm your baby’s development.

Vaccinations: Vaccines help protect you and your baby against serious diseases. CDC recommends you get a whooping cough and flu vaccine during each pregnancy to help protect yourself and your developing baby.

Infections: Prevent infections that could harm your developing baby.

HIV: If you are pregnant or are thinking about becoming pregnant, get a test for HIV as soon as possible and encourage your partner to get tested as well.

Medications: Taking certain medications during pregnancy might cause serious birth defects for your baby.

There is another virus that is so common in people they don’t even know they have it. Cytomegalovirus or CMV will usually infect nearly one in three children by the age of five and half of adults by the age of 40. Healthy immune systems will shake it off easily. If a pregnant woman happens to get infected, she can pass it to her developing baby. Congenital CMV can cause birth defects and other health problems. A pregnant woman can reduce the risk by reducing contact with saliva and urine from babies and young children. From nine to 12 months, your baby’s coordination has improved greatly. Sitting, crawling and even walking are the physical milestones that allows your child the freedom to explore everything around them. Cause and effect exercises and established routines are especially important now. Be careful what you do or say because, at this age, your baby is taking everything in and will copy your every move. Shower them with lots of hugs and praise them for good behavior. When your child does something you don’t want them to do, instead of yelling “no” or spanking them, say “no” in a firm tone of voice and redirect the behavior. Encourage them for “wanted” behavior. Provide safe places for your toddler to explore and play.

Get ready for the next few years because after one year of age, a child’s physical, social and cognitive development will intensify. Buckle up, Mom and Dad, you are on the fringe of the “terrible twos.”

It’s during this time that toddlers may have temper tantrums and the word “no” will begin to dominate their vocabulary. It’s best to always provide a loving and safe environment that’s consistent and predictable. On the cuter side, your child will begin to play pretend, such as feeding a toy doll or imitating a favorite animal. By now, they are eating with a spoon and drinking from a cup. By two years old, most children are using one hand more than the other and should be following simple instructions such as “let’s pick up your toys.” You should be hearing simple three- or fourword sentences so encouragement to “use your words” should be expressed if the child points to what he wants.

From three to four years of age you will be hearing the word “why” until you think you’re losing your mind. You must remember that during this time, your child is becoming more active in their learning process. They begin to categorize and the only way to do that is by asking their teacher (you) the all-important question – “why?” You’ll enjoy this phase of development as your little scientist is better able to follow instructions and can actually carry on a two to three sentence conversation. Children begin to understand the idea of counting and the concept of time. They’ll learn their colors and should be able to use scissors. You’ll love watching their little personalities develop. It’s important that you set rules and stick to them by introducing “time-out” as well as praising them when they follow instructions.

At five years of age, your little one’s world explodes with activity. Kindergarten, play dates, freedom to choose activities with friends and extra-curricular activities such as team sports will keep your kids (and you) busy and healthy.

How important are these times spent outside the home? Pat Garrett of the Swim School believes that consistency and routine is key, especially when it comes to sports and competition. “Kids always respond better when they are familiar with a process and know what to expect.

Keeping kids active and exercising is more important than ever during this time and we have to keep them engaged during this time,” Garrett recommends.

While physical development is important, hitting cognitive milestones are essential to a child’s future. Your child should be counting to at least 10 and should be able to draw some letters and numbers. Learning and copying geometrical shapes as well as drawing a person should be a part of the repertoire. This is also a good time to have a talk with your child about “safe touch” and “stranger danger.”

While you’re teaching them the days of the week and time concepts like morning, evening, today, tomorrow, teach your child their address and phone number.

In every phase of your child’s development, read to them.

A study made in the Rhode Island Hospital compared two groups of eight months old – one group was read to often as babies, while the other was not. It showed that those who were read to have their “receptive” vocabularies (number of words they understand) increased 40 % since babyhood, while the non-reading group increased by only 16 %. According to a study published in Pediatrics, children who had been exposed to home reading showed significantly greater activation of a brain area that is “all about multisensory integration, integrating sound and then visual stimulation,” according to Dr. John S. Hutton, the lead author and a clinical research fellow at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Reading to your child build brain networks that will serve him long-term when he transitions from verbal to reading. Samantha Bonnette, Marketing and Development Manager at Shreve Memorial Library concurs and adds that “reading to your child introduces them to new words, aiding language and vocabulary development. Reading also helps to stimulate their imaginations and encourage creativity.”

One last, extremely important topic: Immunizations. The CDC has a great chart on immunizations and developmental milestones for your child from birth through six years old. It’s compiled by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. You can print this out to keep track of what immunization is due as well as document your child’s growth percentile and milestone markers.

Covid-19 has made keeping up with immunization schedule a challenge but don’t let it stop you. Vaccinations can protect against 14 serious childhood diseases. According to the CDC, among children born between 1994 and 2018, vaccination will prevent an estimated 419 million illnesses, 26.8 million hospitalizations and 936,000 deaths over their lifetimes. They won’t work unless their used.

M&M Cookie Dough (yields 12 cookies) • • • • • • • • • •

1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed 1/4 granulated sugar 1 egg 2 tsp vanilla extract 1/4 cup instant vanilla pudding mix 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 1 cup m&ms (tip, buy holiday m&ms to match for each holiday) 1/2 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

Begin by combining the butter, sugars, egg, vanilla on medium-high until creamed 3-4 minutes. Add the pudding mix, flour, baking soda, and salt until just combined. No more than a minute.

Stir in the m&ms and chocolate chips with a spatula, or on low speed for 15 seconds.

Refrigerate cookie dough for a minimum of three hours. In the meantime make your marshmallow cream filling.

One refrigerated scoop the cookie dough out with an ice cream scoop to get even sized cookies. Place on baking sheet 2-3 inches apart.

Bake the cookies at 350 for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned around the edges. Let the cookies completely cool before adding the marshmallow filling.

Marshmallow Buttercream Filling: • • • • • •

One 7oz. Container marshmallow cream 1 cup salted butter, room temperature 1 tsp vanilla extract 4 cups powdered sugar 2-3 tsp whipping cream Whip marshmallow cream, butter, and vanilla on high speed. Add in the powdered sugar one cup at a time until combined. Add 2-3 teaspoons of whipping cream until you reach your desired consistency.

*Baking Tips

Do not skip on the vanilla pudding. It will keep your cookies moist for days. Do not skip the refrigerating step. It is key for your cookies to not flatten out. Add extra m&ms and chocolate chips once your cookies are ice cream scooped and on the tray for a colorful finished cookie.

SCI-PORT’S ADVENTURES OF INTRIGUE

Sci-Port Discovery Center hosted a joint ribbon cutting with both the Greater Shreveport Chamber and the Bossier Chamber of Commerce for the official opening of the new “Gallery of Intrigue!” This new exhibit includes a number of STEM-based adventures for all ages. Along with a hand-painted interactive mural depicting a variety of indigenous flora and fauna, the display teaches about the history of our ecosystem and how we can protect our areas resources. The Museum of Intrigue is from Syracuse, New York. The creators of Intrigue collaborated with Sci-Port to create an interactive play space for all ages that reflects our cultural and environmental region. This exhibit is similar to an escape room in that you are given clues that challenge your mind and set on a path to explore with your very own passport, but without the confines of time or closed rooms.

Dr. Pamela Simmons Honored with the Outstanding Community Achievement by a Registered Nurse Award

The annual Patriot Awards takes on new meaning this year as the Chamber seeks to recognize those who went above and beyond to help others during the COVID-19 pandemic – our Patriots of the Pandemic.

During this annual event, the Chamber has honored our local first responders for going above and beyond the call of duty. But this year has brought a new meaning to the term first-responder -- now including frontline worker, essential worker, or a helper – and that has caused us to increase the scope of who will be recognized as one of our Patriots for 2020.

The Chamber asked the public to nominate someone they know or have encountered who made this time easier, such as a healthcare worker, a family member, a mask-maker, a 911 operator, a grocery store worker, a delivery driver. The people who worked for the greater good of our community are endless.

The Chamber will honor the top nominees at the Bossier Chamber’s 2020 Patriot Awards, presented by Willis-Knighton Health System on Sept. 10, at 11:30 a.m.

Nominated by the Shreveport District Nurses’ Association (SDNA), Dr. Simmons has worked as a Registered Nurse, in various capacities for forty years. She has served as a staff nurse, a critical care nurse, a nurse educator, a nurse administrator, family nurse practitioner, and community activist.

Dr. Simmons is a member of the Word of Life Center where she serves on the Women’s Executive Board and was a Keys to Freedom Life Group Leader from 2017 to 2019.

Dr. Simmons has served on the board of directors with my nonprofit organization since 2005. Her community activities have had a positive impact on many lives in north Louisiana

GOOD TO KNOW and around the world. Approximately 2400 people have benefitted from the classes she developed for the homeless population at the Shreveport -Bossier Rescue Mission. She, along with her husband have purchased, prepared, and served food to the homeless on the downtown streets of Shreveport.

Her generous donation helps provide bags for chemotherapy patients that are being treated at Ochsner Health Care Cancer Center. These bags get first-time patients started with the needed items (lotions, hats, fuzzy socks, blankets, mints, gum, etc.) to ease the discomforts of chemo. The bags are also filled with spiritual material to encourage the patients in their fight for survival.

Come See the Big Changes At the Y! On February 9, 1920, in an article in The Shreveport Times Dr. Dodd of the First Baptist Church was quoted saying, “There are three outstanding needs for Shreveport at the present time: First of all, we need the public library. Second, we need new school buildings with auditorium facilities in which school spirit can be created and where public lecturers and moving picture machines can supplement the routine of mere book learning. And, third, we need a great Y.M.C.A. building.”

Five years later, the first brick and mortar Y.M.C.A. in our area opened on 400 McNeil Street and for the last 95 years the Downtown Y has been the hub of wellness for our downtown community. But, as with anyone who is 95, over time some parts wear out and a little rehab is needed to get them working again the way they were intended.

The Downtown Y set out on a $300,000.00 renovation project a couple of years ago and is very excited to announce it has now been completed. The project includes all new cardio equipment, all new lockers in the Men’s Locker Room, transformation of the social room into a yoga/pilates room, and an updating of the entry, front desk area, CrossFit Room and the Ladies Locker Room.

Shreveport native Kenny Wayne Shepherd was inducted into the Northwest Louisiana Walk of Stars in downtown Shreveport. Born and raised in Shreveport, Kenny Wayne Shepherd received his first guitar from his grandmother at the young age of 3. The self taught blues guitarist started performing on stage at the age of 13 and only went up from there.
