Barkus and Meoux Pet Parade “Unleash the Decades”

The Krewe of Barkus & Meoux held their 2022 Pet Parade “Unleash the Decades” at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds. There were Canines, Felines, and Equines, Oh My! And lots of other furry and feathered friends. Hundreds of people brought their pets, some in costume, to enjoy an afternoon centered around our beloved animals. Not only was there a grand parade, but there was also over 50 vendors with food booths, craft booths, specialty dog boutiques, canine cuisine booths, animal rescue groups, and pet adoption agencies. Some of the many activities included a costume contest for pets and owners in different categories, pony rides, petting zoo, face painting, and an animal obstacle course. Congratulations to King and Queen Ambassadors XXII Tony and Allyson Prestidge, Captain Jean Johnson, Co-Captain Ronda Rivers, and the rest of their royal court for representing our love for animals.

Every type of exercise has its selling points. But swimming is unlike any other aerobic workout for a few important reasons. Not only could it make you smarter, it could also make you live longer—go figure!

D

id you know that regular pool attendance could improve your mental health, enhance your lung capacity, and make you smarter? No matter the level of experience you are as a swimmer, the general benefits of swimming are yours to go out and make your own. From toddlers to adults, it offers a great fullbody workout that not only leave you physically stronger, but there are multitude of other health benefits as well. It has the power to give your muscles a makeover, transform you into a cardio king, turn back father time, and mentally calm you quicker than the most secluded beach.

With summer just around the corner, swimming should be on everyone’s must-do list. All you need to do is jump on in!

Swimming is also calming and meditative, as the sound of your breathing and the water rushing by helps you focus inward while drowning out all other distractions. This lowers stress and depression naturally. So, if you feel like you’re emotionally drowning, jumping in an actual body of water may be exactly what you need to feel good again.

The mental health upsides of getting wet are far-reaching.

Bullock believes regular exercise helps reduce anxiety and depression, as it releases your ‘feel good’ hormones and keeps the brain working in a healthy way. By simply being in the water, many swimmers say they feel more relaxed and less stressed.

SWIMMING IS SUITABLE FOR ALL AGES AND FITNESS LEVELS

Some types of exercise can be challenging for people who are new to it or who feel very unfit. Swimming, however, allows a person to go at their own pace, and it can be inviting for newcomers to exercise. Virginia Bullock, owner of JUMP! Swim Shreveport states swimming is a great activity for people of all ages and fitness levels, offering up all kinds of health benefits.

“Swimming may not be appropriate for everyone,” she says, “but many people—from infants to seniors—can participate in swimming or water activities with the appropriate training and supervision. Just a few minutes of swimming at your own pace engages your whole body and gets the blood flowing.”

According to Bullock, swimming requires nothing other than a person’s own body, although additional tools such as flippers, kick boards, and water weights can add an extra dynamic to your workout. “Learning how to swim is a helpful life skill, and it’s never too late to learn. If you can’t swim laps, or if lap swimming isn’t your thing, that’s fine,” claims Bullock. “You can try a water aerobics class, which gently builds muscle and gets your heart pumping without putting excess strain on your body.”

What’s the most important thing to know when learning how to swim? “Breath control,” states Bullock. “This is important because controlling your breath is one of the big challenges that you have to overcome when you start swimming. Once you have good breathing control and have also learned to float easily, incorporating breathing into your swimming becomes more straightforward. Just don’t hold your breath. Blow bubbles!”

SWIMMING IMPROVES MENTAL HEALTH

Love that natural endorphin kick? While many talk about a runner’s high, swimming can bring about all those feel-good emotions, too. In addition to the happy hormones, you also can feel a relaxation response similar to yoga, as swimming stretches your body constantly. Combine this with the deep rhythmic breathing and you can experience a relaxation rush that’s very unique to the sport.

SWIMMING IMPROVES MUSCLE DEFINITION AND STRENGTH

Health experts suggest that in order to stay healthy you should be doing at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week. This can include anything from running to walking to circuit training or HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts at home. If you choose to do particularly vigorous activity, such as fast swimming, you can slash this to 75 minutes—which is only just over an hour each week.

Plus, who wouldn’t want a swimmer’s body?

Swimming fires up more of your body’s major muscle groups than other forms of cardio exercise. While the legs kick, the arms pull. As the back reaches and rotates, the stomach tightens to power the legs and stabilize the core, making swimming one of the best aerobic exercises to give you a total body workout.

“With running or biking, you’re mostly using your lower body,” Bullock claims. “Swimming not only engages your legs, but also recruits your upper body and core—especially your lats, the muscles of your middle back, and triceps, the backs of your upper arms.”

Swimming offers the potential to tone up pretty much everywhere. Someone who starts working hard in the pool could expect to see more definition in their arms, upper body and thighs in particular. Additionally, swimming is a great way to burn calories, but most don’t realize it can be just as efficient as jumping on the treadmill. Depending on the stroke you choose and your intensity, swimming can burn equal or greater calories than running. An added bonus? You don’t have to worry about sweat in your eyes.

SWIMMING HELPS YOU STAY FLEXIBLE

Swimming requires you to reach, stretch, twist, and pull your way through the water. Your ankles become fins and are stretched with each kick as you push off against the liquid pressure. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still stretch on your own, but repetitive stretching found in your various strokes also helps with flexibility.

benefit those who seek better sleep. That should be music to an insomniac’s sleepy ears. Apparently, getting sweaty is the passport to a good night’s sleep.

SWIMMING CAN MAKE YOU SMARTER

Of course, all exercise is great for the mind, but can swimming actually make you smarter?

PREGNANT? NO PROBLEM!

The Griffith Institute for Educational Research, a university in Australia, studied 7000 children under the age of five to see if swimming could affect their intelligence levels.

The research focused on kids who took swimming lessons compared to a control group of non-swimmers. The results showed that kids who regularly participated in swimming were able to master language development, fine motor skills, confidence, and physical development sooner than the control group.

SWIMMING HELPS YOU FALL ASLEEP FASTER

Swimming may also help with math skills, as swimmers regularly calculate the meters swum in sets or interval drills to put their adding and subtraction skills to work.

Swimming is a recommended form of exercise for those who are pregnant, as it is one of the safest ways to work out while pregnant. It can also help with common pregnancy symptoms like backaches and swollen joints. However, it is always a good idea to consult a doctor when trying a new form of activity during pregnancy.

“I’ve never had a problem sleeping,” said no one, ever!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around one-third of adults in the United States do not get enough sleep. If accessible, swimming may

While all exercise can produce greater health and longevity, research points to swimming as one of the best choices for doing so. A 32-year study at the University of South Carolina found men aged 20 to 90 who swam regularly had a 50 percent lower death rate than runners, walkers, or men who didn’t exercise. Swimming is also linked to many of the same life-extending, heart-saving, mood-lifting benefits associated with other forms of aerobic exercise. And it’s fun, which matters. “People tend to enjoy swimming more than running or bike-riding,” Bullock says. “While about half of the people who try a new exercise program give up within a few months, people who take up swimming are more likely to stick with it.”

If you’re sold on swimming, Bollock recommends starting slowly. Being nervous and tight may limit the sport’s benefits.

This brings us to three rules to keep in mind when getting your garden ready:

So where to start? The most logical answer is to start from the ground up, in this case with the soil.

Once the pH is at the optimum level, the soil’s fertility comes next. While plants may make their own food, they get their water and nutrients from the soil. The soil sample results will tell what is needed and in what amounts.

Sometimes a simple balanced fertilizer is needed such as an 8-8-8 or 13-13-13. More often than not, soils will not need all three macro-nutrients: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (N-P-K). So fertilizers such as Urea (40-0-0), Triple superphosphate (0-46-0) or Potash (0-0-60) will be called for. These fertilizers will allow for the application of what is needed without adding what is not needed. If done in containers, a sample slow-release balanced fertilizer is ideal.

Springtime brings about the start of a new year in the plant world, with plants coming out of dormancy and budding out.

The question always is “When is spring really here?”

There are many ways to say when the spring season has started, from Punxsutawney Phil seeing or not seeing his shadow, to the Spring Equinox, to the Farmer’s Almanac, or when the pecan trees break their dormancy. All could be used, but for north Louisiana we can safely assume

To grow the best plants possible, a soil test should be run. Soil sample kits can be picked up at the Master Gardener office at the Red River Research Station at 262 Research Station Road in Bossier or at many of the local plant nurseries. These boxes have step-bystep instructions on how to take and submit samples for analysis. Results will be sent back with a tailor-made work up of what the sampled areas need to grow the best plants possible. Most of the landscape plants and vegetables are looking for a fertile soil with a pH of 5.5-6.5. If soil pH changes need to be made, the soil test results will state how much sulfur (to lower pH) or lime (to raise pH) needs to be added to get the desired pH.

Now that fertility needs have been determined, it’s time to place it out for the plants to use. For lawns, April 15th is a great day to fertilize. This is late enough that the grass should be fully out of dormancy and actively growing.

An important fact is that a healthy lawn has less weeds. If a lawn is healthy and mowed at the correct height, there will be less weeds. Follow these guidelines for the best mowing heights: ¾” to 1.5” for Bermuda grass; 1” to 2” for Zoysia grass; 1” to 2” for Centipede grass; and 2” to 3” for St. Augustine grass. RULE THREE

Right plant, right place, right time.

For those who are more interested in the landscape rather than the lawn, this is the time to look at what plant materials are still alive and coming back and what needs to be replaced.

Season selections should be made based on what will grow this season and what is growing now. Avoid planting full grown plants that will not make it much further into the season.

Choosing plants with similar needs, such as water requirements or light requirements, will make things easier overall. A way to remember this is plant ‘Like with Like.’

Plants should also be planted to avoid “instant” landscape caused by planting too many plants in a small area.

Instead, space plants based on mature height and spread.

April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to teaching pet parents about emergency care for their precious pals. For the month of April, we encourage you to brush up on emergency care for your furry friends. Generally, it’s always a good idea to see a veterinarian if your pet gets hurt or sick; however, you may need to be prepared to give them first aid until you can make it to the vet. Here’s some information to help you handle a few pet emergencies.

ACCIDENTAL POISONING Know the signs of poisoning: dilated pupils, drooling or foaming at the mouth, seizures, bleeding, and abnormal behavior. If you think your pet has been exposed to a poison or toxic substance, it is important to act quickly. First, try to identify the poison so you can provide as much information to your vet as possible. Even if your pet is acting normal, do not wait for signs of sickness because by then, it might be too late — always seek veterinarian treatment right away.

DEHYDRATION If your pet is severely dehydrated, your dog or cat must receive emergency care immediately! Contact the nearest animal emergency for medical advice and let them know that

you are on your way. In milder cases of dehydration, provide your dog with small amounts of water or ice cubes every few minutes. You can perform a quick test to see if your pet is dehydrated by pulling up on their skin between their shoulder blades. If the skin doesn’t spring back, this is a sign of dehydration. If your pet shows signs of severe dehydration, they will need to see vet care immediately for IV fluids.

HEAT STROKES Heat strokes may present with several symptoms — including collapsing, panting excessively, breathing difficulty, increased heart rate, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, wobbling, and a temperature of 104°F or greater. In addition, heat strokes can cause swelling of the brain and kidney failure. Therefore, immediate veterinary care is necessary. On the way to the vet, open your car windows and turn the air conditioner on high. Until you make it to the vet, be sure to let your dog drink as much cool water as they want without forcing them and place a wet towel on their back.

WOUNDS, BROKEN BONES, OR BLEEDING Pets attacked by other animals need vet attention to prevent infections and to check for internal wounds. If your pet is bleeding, apply direct pressure using a gauze. However, if the gauze soaks completely through with blood, do not remove it — just add more gauze on top of it until you get to the pet animal hospital.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture originated in China more than 3,000 years ago as part of traditional Chinese medicine that was and is practiced there. Acupuncture is based on the complex body of meridians—energy highways of the body—where qi (pronounced chi and means energy) should flow. The meridians are often spoken of as pathways throughout the body that access different systems that carry blood and bodily fluids through the body.

Acupuncture primarily uses needles, suction cups, and pressure points at specific meridian locations on the body to activate and strengthen the meridians leading to more health and vitality. There have been many positive results with acupuncture being an effective treatment for certain health issues such as pain and headaches.

There are a wide variety of holistic health treatments and protocols from many traditions around the world. Finding a modality that works for you and that works with any other medical treatment or medication you are taking is surely worth looking into.

Many folks choose to add in holistic living practices along with more conventional treatments—this is known as ‘complementary’ or ‘integrative medicine.’ This evolving vocabulary also reflects a sea change underway throughout medicine. Aromatherapy—often called essential oil therapy—is a holistic health modality that uses natural plant extracts in the form of oils to elevate health and well-being. Aromatherapy uses a wide variety of aromatic essential oils medicinally (topically, internally, and aromatically) to improve body, mind, and spirit health. It is said to enhance both physical and emotional health.

For example, chamomile oil is used topically to reduce stress, while oregano oil is often used internally to boost immunity.

Ayurveda is the ancient medicine that comes from India and is considered one of the oldest medicines in the world. It is considered a complementary medicine looking at the whole person through many lenses of health, and is known for its ability to treat many conditions such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and asthma.

Ayurveda is a medical system that includes physical, psychological, philosophical, ethical, and spiritual health. It supports the many self-healing aspects of the body through a body, mind, and soul approach as well as the use of herbal remedies to treat specific ailments and conditions.

While there is still a lot of research needed to scientifically prove many aspects of Ayurveda as a holistic healing approach, a lot of progress has been made in the deeper understanding of how it works and its effectiveness with many of today’s most common health issues.

Chiropractors work with your bones and muscles, making sure your body’s structure is properly aligned. The most well-known chiropractic treatment is when a chiropractor does spinal manipulation—also known as a chiropractic adjustment. With controlled pressure moving and releas-

the importance of

managing stress

B

eing a parent is one of the most rewarding experiences there is. At the same time, parenthood and stress tend to go hand in hand. When an individual deals with an overwhelming amount of stress, it will impact their mental health. Mental health refers to a person’s psychological and emotional well-being.

We all encounter stressful situations in our everyday lives, but parents have added layers of pressure. Society tends to place parents on a superhuman pedestal. They are expected to power through their own battles as well as life’s trials for the sake of their children and households. Parents often place these same unrealistic expectations on themselves. They can find themselves hanging on by a thread while trying to fulfill everyone else’s needs.

An online survey by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that 75% of parents reported family responsibilities as a significant source of stress. Demetria Layton, MA, National Certified Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and Shreveport native, points out that financial issues, marital/relationship issues, an inconsistent parent/ partner, physical/mental illness of a parent, caring for children with disabilities, having limited or no support system, lack of sufficient employment, lack of adequate education, no reliable transportation, or living in unsafe neighborhoods or environments are a number of key stressors for parents.

It’s common for parents to become frustrated, but when they begin feeling overwhelmed, problems can arise. Layton says, “A person should pay attention to the slightest change in their normal day to day functioning.” When someone notices that their emotions are beginning to bubble, it’s time to take a step back.

It’s important for parents to recognize the signs of overextension for the sake of their children as well as themselves. Dr. Anjelica Hart, EdD, Doctor of Education in Educational Psychology and Technology and Instructor of Psychology and ADA Coordinator at Southern University at Shreveport, explains that overwhelming stress can affect a parent’s ability to remain calm and consistent with their children.

She says, “Oftentimes, parents are very irritable and impatient when experiencing consistent stress. Some common stress responses include headaches, frustration, tiredness, mood changes, disturbed sleep, frequent conflicts, and problem concentrating. A significant amount of mental pressure can cause anger, explosive outbursts, inappropriate or harmful statements toward children, and child neglect or abuse.” Feelings of frustration from trying to balance parenthood and life in general are not uncommon, but without proper management of emotions, parents become a runaway train carrying their children with them.

Coping with stress in unhealthy ways can manifest as substance use or abuse, over or under eating, child neglect/abuse, sleeping too much or not enough, engaging in self harm, isolation, feelings of constant loneliness, ignoring their children, or child neglect/abuse.

Layton says that when parents deal with stress in unhealthy ways, children are more at risk to develop issues such as social problems, anxiety, depression, difficulty maintaining healthy/positive relationships, aggression, hostile relationships with peers and authority figures, or a negative self-image when a parent’s mental health isn’t properly handled.

Children may also develop their own survival techniques when parents are unable to meet certain needs. Hart gives an example, “If a child is hungry and at an age where he or she can perform basic tasks, they may fix a bowl of cereal to fulfill their hunger when their parent is in a depressive state, in terms of not getting out of bed and not tending to their needs.”

She also points out that when a parent can’t provide the love and care their children seek, their children may look for a role model such as a coach, teacher, or neighbor who can provide the mental and emotional support they’re seeking.

Children watch everything parents do and mock their behavior. They notice when a parent is mentally not there and worry about their parent’s wellbeing. It’s vital that parents exhibit healthy coping skills not only for their own health, but also to set positive examples for their children.

Some healthy coping skills given by both Hart and Layton are maintaining a healthy lifestyle which includes proper eating habits, exercise, rest, relaxation/ meditation techniques, constant positive affirmations, building a social support system of trustworthy individuals, or seeking professional help.

When parents properly maintain their stress, children are more likely to have higher grades in school, develop positive relationships with peers and authority figures, develop self-confidence, develop positive expressions of love/care, and effectively communicate problems they are experiencing.

Parents practicing healthy coping skills cultivates positive parent/child relationships and serves to teach children valuable life lessons in stress management.

Even if you didn’t study the classics in high school or college, there’s a case to be made that you should begin doing so now. Below are five reasons why every man should dive into the classics!

But for the ancient Greeks and Romans, such subjects had a much broader and inspiring purpose. History and art were not just interesting and informative but were also thought to instill virtue and morality.

When you read The Histories by Herodotus, you’ll see him connect historical events to political theory, anthropology, and even geography. Plato doesn’t just muse about Truth, Justice, and Beauty, but also math and physics. Some experts argue that the reason Apple has been so successful in the past two decades is that many of the people who work there—particularly the executives—have a background in both the humanities and technology.

LITTLE GUY, BIG RESULTS At around two months of age, Sawyer Brimer’s parents noticed the back left side of his head was abnormally flat. Their pediatrician reassured them that the problem would likely resolve itself once he started to sit up. On a returning visit, a new scan showed that his head was growing in width, but the flat side in the back wasn’t improving. A specialist referred the Brimer’s to Snell’s. “When we got to Snell’s they scanned him right away, and within two weeks they had his helmet ready,” Lauren, Sawyer’s mom, said.

The first couple of weeks adjusting to the helmet were a bit rough for Sawyer when he was napping or sleeping, but after that, it was smooth sailing. Sawyer’s parents were rigorous about keeping the cranial helmet on 23 hours a day, and are delighted that his treatment was successful.

“His head looks amazing,” Lauren said. “You would never be able to tell he had been in a helmet.”

What better way to experience the area’s unique aquatic ecosystems than via paddleboard, canoe, or kayak? Scenic, slow-moving waterways crisscross the region, and the abundance of creeks, bayous and small rivers lend themselves to excellent opportunities for any paddling enthusiasts. Chances are you’ll see elegant wildlife, pass under groves of mysterious tree canopies, or even brush past the occasional alligator no matter your vessel of choice. Unlike the fast rushing “white waters” found in other states, here you’ll find peaceful exploration in the many bayous, small rivers, creeks, and marshes that offer an assortment of paddling adventures around every bend.

At 33,000 acres, Caddo Lake is the largest natural lake in the south. Straddling the Louisiana-Texas line just 15 miles north of Shreveport, Caddo Lake offers a rare, if not singular, wetlands environment. And calling it a lake is a stretch— at 12 miles wide and 16 miles long, it looks more like a flooded cypress swamp than a natural lake. It’s home to over 200 species of birds, hundreds of different species of mammals, reptiles and fish, as well, and countless plants, and trees— most prominently the towering bald cypress, some as old

as 400 years, that erupt from its surface like limbs of drowned giants. Its natural beauty by itself can stop you dead in your tracks, but Caddo Lake also works on the primal circuits. Simply put, it sticks with you (even if it is kind of a creepy place).

Located on the western outskirts of Shreveport, Cross Lake, is an easy getaway for water recreation activities and fishing. This 8,800-acre lake has over 50 miles of shoreline and has four boat ramps available to the public. Two marinas on the lake serve the public boating needs. Kayaks and canoes are ideal for accessing much of the shallow-water fishing areas. Moss-covered cypress trees and aquatic vegetation provide the primary cover for bass, crappie, sunfish and baitfish. If you prefer something with a motor, rent a boat or bring your own and spend a day enjoying the great views plus some excellent fishing opportunities.

Nature Centers Plants and animals are up to something every single day. If you want to see the sights and sounds of spring, you might want to check out the nation’s largest garden dedicated to roses. The Garden of the American Rose Center, a 118-acre park located in west Shreveport, serves as the national headquarters for the American Rose Society and features over 20,000 rosebushes and companion plants, sculptures, and fountains, including the beautiful Dudley Watkins Reflection Pool. Peak bloom times are April to June and September to October, although guests are allowed year-round. Pets on leashes are welcome on all its walking trails, and there is a picnic area and children’s playground.

If roses aren’t your thing, check out the Cypress Nature Study Center in Benton. Founded in 1977 as a preserve for nature study, the center is devoted to celebrating and exploring life through nature by sharing the excitement and fun of our natural world.

Situated on 184-acres of forest and wetlands, the Nature Center’s multi-use facility includes a large Interpretive Center, classroom, and an animal lab where you will see many types of fish, crawfish, and turtles. The Nature Center provides educational programs and services to students, teachers, scouts, and families throughout northwest Louisiana, southwestern Arkansas, and east Texas.

American Rose Center

The organization moved here in 1974, planting roots to develop America’s largest garden dedicated solely to roses. While the gardens are undergoing a renovation through 2022, they’re still open for visitors. And, because of the garden’s outdoor space and beauty, it is the perfect activity for social distancing in groups.

The Nature Center’s interpretive stations help anyone discover nature by looking, touching, feeling, and interacting with the exhibits and live animals.

and many different types of rocks located in the region. The Center also has 12 trails totaling approximately 4.5 miles.

There are rustic dirt trails and a quarter mile section of trails designed for wheelchair accessibility. The 84-acre natural area of bottomland and upland hardwoods, educational inlet, and lake is a sanctuary to a wide variety of songbirds, small mammals, birds of prey, wetland animals, and a variety of plants and fungi.

Abundant Wildlife Do you want to see some animals? Northwest Louisiana’s mild climate and unusual terrain, along with the many state parks and national wildlife refuges, make it a haven for those who enjoy looking at wildlife in their natural habitat. The state’s rich ecosystems form a nurturing habitat—a diversity of remnant prairie, bottomland hardwood forests, wetlands, and piney woods—for all kinds of species.

Are you into birdwatching? Birds that could be considered target species in the region include ringed kingfisher, gray flycatcher, Cassin’s sparrow, and dusky-capped flycatcher.

It’s also the only region in the state where Bewick’s wren, western meadowlark, smith’s longspur, and Harris’s sparrows regularly populate.

For those seeking to add a little elevation to their hike, the highest mountain in Louisiana is 535-feet tall—considered a hill in most states—but it stills offers some beautiful views of the area. At Driskill Mountain, there is about a mile of marked trails which guide hikers up and down the mountain, with two different options, the more difficult marked with blue signs although it’s not overly challenging. At the top, you’ll be able to view an endless sea of trees and Jordan Mountain in the distance.

The Sugar Cane Trail within the Caney Lakes Recreation Complex (near Minden) is a looped trail totaling about seven miles through rolling, hilly terrain that’s typical of this part of the state. A mixture of pine and oak give shade to the well-worn trail and one can expect several nice views of Caney Lake. This trail is the most child-friendly hike among the groups named.

If you’re new to hiking, or maybe you just want a nice long, relaxing stroll, a mere twenty minutes from downtown Shreveport, head to Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Park Nature Trail—a 160-acre pine-oak-hickory forest with five miles of hiking trails featuring beautiful wildflowers and is good for all skill levels. All the walkways and trails through Walter B. Jacobs offer a unique educational experience for visitors. Wildlife and foliage are identified by clear and informative signs. It’s great for nature buffs, with plenty of flora and fauna, a leisurely romantic hike, or if you happen to have a little one or dog in tow.

An interpretive building, pavilion equipped with restrooms, and naturalists are staffed to offer guests with information on the natural region. During the summer, the park truly comes alive with its annual environmental day camp called Earth Camp that is offered to kids.

ATV/UTV Riding The term “ATV” is typically synonymous with the slang term “quad” and conjures up images of four-wheeled vehicles intended for single-rider use. Most UTV’s offer the same benefit, hence the name “Utility Terrain Vehicle.” No longer are these machines intended for just hauling junk around the yard. In fact, many are built for performance and there are ample areas around Shreveport-Bossier to test them out.

Muddy Bottoms, a 5,000-acre ATV/UTV park (near Springhill) is only 50 miles northeast of Shreveport. According to the park’s website, it’s the largest facility of its kind in the nation. It’s an “outdoor lover’s dream” and offers multiple terrains to create an ATV rider’s paradise.

Among the many features are a vast mud bog, a giant outdoor amphitheater and a huge spray park and playground.

If you prefer something a little closer to home, High Lifter Off-Road Park, near Keithville, extends its love of all things off-road and has created a place for local ATV enthusiasts to ride. For residents of Shreveport-Bossier, this close-to-home park is operated by the people who wrote the book on riding ATVs in challenging conditions. The park includes 570 acres of land with over 25 miles of trails, four prepared mud pits, a motocross track, three ponds, and much, much more.

Doulas

and the Difference They Make.

I

t’s 3:00 AM, and the ringer on my phone buzzes, waking me from a few hours of sleep. It’s my client, and her contractions are getting stronger, lasting over 60 seconds, and coming about every 4 minutes. My adrenaline surges, and I spring into action. We talk in between contractions.

As I listen, I assess her emotional state and her breathing patterns. I gently reassure her that all is well. Soon, I will get in my car to go join her and her partner at their chosen birthplace for several intense hours leading up to the birth of their baby. I feel so honored to be able to be present at one of life’s most profound miracles.

I am not an obstetrician or a midwife. I am a doula who serves families as a non-medical professional support person experienced in childbirth. Some see me as a cheerleader, others a coach or even a sherpa, who uses her training to help navigate the mountains of each unique labor’s journey. I accompany mothers prenatally and throughout their labor, offering continuous encouragement and information as well as comfort measures and help with positioning to facilitate labor progress.

Birth Doulas provide emotional support, physical support, education, collaboration, and professionalism to the birthing mother and her family (but are not primary care providers). They work with families to enable them to have a less stressful, more comfortable, and informed pregnancy and birth. As a doula, I educate both parents and family members about the labor process and help them ask important questions of their care providers in order to receive more individualized care that best aligns with their preferences, values, and culture. Not every birth-

ing family feels comfortable talking openly with their doctors.

Some have felt disrespected, suffered trauma, or heard stories of other women who have. Julie Fuller, a local doula client, asserts that coming from another country, she was unfamiliar with the American hospital system. Her doula gave her lots of valuable information and calmed her mind and body, allowing for a more peaceful birth.

Rather than replace fathers/family members in the birth space, my skills as a doula include working with them to show them exactly how to help their partner as they labor. If labor is especially long, or a mother’s needs require more than one support person, I can offer much needed relief and an extra set of hands to apply counter pressure to their low back and hips or cool washcloths to their forehead. All of this goes a long way in making women– and their partners– feel safer during pregnancy and labor. Another local mother, Stacy Carpenter, who has used doulas for all seven of her births, stresses how much her doulas were able to allay both her and her husband’s fears and stress.

Doulas are not just for unmedicated or out of hospital births.

While I have accompanied women at home and in birth centers, I primarily accompany women and their families at local hospitals. I have experience giving support during all kinds of births: natural, vaginal, water births, and planned c-sections.

Doulas attend stillbirths and births with complications. At every kind of birth, I walk with each family on their journey to listen and be present for them. I help them with research gathering. We work together to identify goals or write a birth plan.

I make sure they have space to ask their questions and learn all their options. I affirm their choices.

Doulas come from various walks of life and social, cultural, and racial backgrounds. Hiring one who speaks your language fosters a sense of trust and really improves the birth experience for the whole family. Doulas are heavily invested in better maternal and infant health outcomes, which we desperately need in the USA. Evidence from dozens of scientific studies has concluded that doulas are very beneficial to women and their families. Women with support from a doula are less likely to need pain meds.

They are more likely to have a vaginal birth, reducing their risk of C-section by nearly 40%. They also report less negative feelings about birth. Rebecca Dekker, R.N./Ph.D, founder of Evidence Based Birth, shared results of a 2008 study by McGrath and Kennell on the organization’s website that showed how much the combination of a doula and a birth partner working together lowered C-section rates in first time mothers: from 25% with a partner to 13% with a partner and a doula in combination. I have helped many clients who had a C-section with their first birth avoid one with their second.

Nurses offer a wealth of knowledge and support but may have several patients and unable to be continuously available for physical and emotional support in the birth space. As your doula I stay by your side during your whole labor. I will also be more objective than a close friend or family member. I take time to get to know you and your preferences during two or three prenatal visits in the weeks before labor begins.

Once a baby is born my tasks do not end. In the first hour or two after a birth, I offer guidance to initiate breastfeeding. Later, I visit with clients by phone and at home to check in on their emotional, mental, and physical well-being. I help manage expectations and gather resources they may need or help them process

their birth story and transition to parenting a new baby.

In an era where we lead busy lives, often far away from close family and friends, women have much less support than they used to. The first few months at home with a baby are full of doubts and challenges. Doulas fill in the gaps here too. Locally, postpartum doulas work on an hourly basis. They can prepare light meals or perform some household chores or run errands.

They are experienced with newborns and care for babies, allowing new moms time to rest and shower. More importantly, they can also reassure and validate new parents while discussing options for feeding or figuring out new routines.

Doulas help moms (and partners) feel more confident and at peace before and during deliver and in those early chaotic months.

Intuitive Eating: What Is It, And Why Is It Better Than the Latest Diet?

s the seasons change, and warmer weather arrives, many people will start to diet in preparation for wearing swimsuits and shorts. However, the “best diet” may be no diet at all.

The concept of Intuitive Eating (IE) has gained traction over the past several years. The landmark book, Intuitive Eating, was published in 1995 and written by two registered dieticians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. It is now in its fourth edition: Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach.

The authors had noted in their clinical work that dieting was rarely effective in helping patients to maintain weight loss.

Many patients regained more weight than they initially lost, and some developed long-term disordered eating and eating disorders.

Recognizing the futility of dieting for most people, these dieticians proposed a different framework for eating, which they termed Intuitive Eating. They outlined ten basic tenets of this eating philosophy, which are as follows: 1.

The first principle of Intuitive Eating (reject the diet mentality) is the hardest for many people. Dieting culture is strong in the United States, and many of us do not realize how pervasive it is. The CDC notes that 49% of US adults have tried to lose weight in the past year (56% women vs 42% men) and Americans spend approximately $33 billion per year on weight loss products.

Despite this tremendous effort, two-thirds of Americans fall into overweight or obese classifications. A meta-analysis of 29 studies on obesity and dieting showed that dieters regained 50% of their lost weight in one year, and 80% within two years.

Dieting often starts in the adolescent years, but researchers have shown that teens who diet and control their weight in unhealthy ways tend to gain more weight and have a higher risk of eating disorders than those who do not.

Sustained weight loss is difficult, because the human body has many defense mechanisms that counteract weight loss, including lowering metabolism and increasing the production of hormones that cause hunger. In addition, the environment is full of highly processed, highly palatable foods that promote weight gain.

While the US has been waging a “war on obesity” over the past few decades, there is little evidence that the battle has been successful in decreasing rates of overweight and obesity. A growing number of people who study obesity have called for moving away from the weight-based health model to a model that promotes healthy habits regardless of a person’s weight.

One term for this model is Health at Every Size (HAES). The

HAES paradigm states that weight is an imperfect marker of health and focusing solely on weight can be counterproductive. For example, one group of researchers found that muscular strength is more important than body fatness as a measure of health outcome.

They found that the strongest men with the highest body fat percentage in their study had no increase in mortality risk over the strongest, leanest men, so exercise may be more important than weight to overall health.

The idea of Intuitive Eating has gained more traction recently as the Health At Every Size (HAES) movement has grown. Intuitive Eating fits within the HAES framework because it is not weight-focused, although people may lose weight when they eat intuitively. Intuitive eaters essentially eat when they are hungry and stop when they are comfortably full.

They do not divide food into “good” or “bad” categories, but they do pay attention to eating foods that make them feel good (gentle nutrition). Those who are accustomed to dieting and food rules tend to worry that IE may lead to weight gain, poor nutrition, and worsened health, but a growing body of research shows that these concerns are unfounded.

One study divided a group of obese, female chronic dieters into a dieting group and an intuitive eating group and found that al-

though the dieting group initially lost weight, they regained the weight within two years, and over one-half of the group reported a feeling of failure and damage to self-esteem.

Alternately, the IE group reported 0% feelings of failure, felt 100% better about themselves, had maintained weight, and had better markers of health, such as blood pressure and cholesterol.

A different group of researchers looked at a total of 26 studies and found that IE was associate with a lower body mass index (BMI), an improvement in various psychological markers such as depression and self-esteem, and a decrease in disordered eating.

So before starting another spring diet, consider an alternative to the cycle of weight loss and regain that most dieters face.

SPORTRAN WINS 2021 FEDERAL COMPETITIVE BUS AND BUS FACILITIES GRANT SporTran is the only transit agency in Louisiana to be awarded the 2021 Competitive Bus and Bus Facilities Grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) of the US Department of Transportation. The FTA awarded $409.3 million in grants to 70 projects in 39 states to modernize and electrify America’s buses, make bus systems and routes more reliable, and improve safety and facilities. The grants support modernizing and improving the most widespread form of transit in America and will help dozens of communities buy new-technology and electric buses, such as electric buses, that reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, promote cleaner air, and help address the climate crisis.

SporTran was given $1.948 million in funds which it will use to improve bus stops by adding shelters and infrastructure that improve accessibility. The upgrades will enhance safety for riders, better accommodate passenger transfers between buses, and attract new riders in the Shreveport-Bossier service area.

SENATOR BILL CASSIDY SECURES $7M FEDERAL APPROPRIATION FOR LSU HEALTH SHREVEPORT LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS) has received a notice of award from Health and Human Services (HHS) for a $7 million appropriation in support of the Center for Medical Education and Emerging Viral Threats. Senator Bill Cassidy was instrumental in the receipt of this funding for LSUHS, which will enhance the impact of the Center for Emerging Viral Threats (CEVT) as it is able to expand significantly in the new Center for Medical Education building. Additional medical education and research opportunities coupled with the expected increase in the number of clinical trials testing new anti-virals and other anti-pathogen agents to combat infections with viruses, bacteria, fungi, or other pathogens will yield enhanced economic impact to the region and the state.

“This supports a strategy by which LSU Health Shreveport can better track the spread of coronavirus now and other infections in the future. This keeps us healthier and lowers health care costs. It also expands research possibilities to create more and better-paying jobs,” said Dr. Cassidy. The appropriation will supplement $50 million in state, local and philanthropic giving.

LSU Health Shreveport’s Center for Emerging Viral Threats (CEVT) has established an unprecedented track record in saving lives from COVID-19 among a population facing historical health disparities. The appropriation fosters enhanced services to rural and often underserved populations of Northwest Louisiana which often suffer disproportionately. Furthermore, the Center for Emerging Viral Threats has been a state and national leader in genomic sequencing which identified novel variants of the virus in Louisiana. Viral genomic sequencing is necessary for national and global health security and is an important aspect in effective and timely response against future pandemics and outbreaks.

“This funding for LSU Health Shreveport’s new Center for Medical Education and our Center for Emerging Viral Threats is substantial. The MRSP is a year-long residential research immersion program for future clinician-scientists who are current medical, dental, and veterinary students that advances health by inspiring careers in biomedical research. Shriners Children’s Celebrates 100 Years!

D

id you know Shreveport is home to the first Shriners Hospital in the United States?

More than a century ago, the polio epidemic ravaged America. The Shriners in Shreveport committed themselves to do something about it in an effort to help children and establish an ongoing philanthropy.

And as the hospital celebrates its centennial this year, it is looking to the future, not just resting on its laurels. “It’s an exciting time,” said Steve Caskey, chairman of the Board of Governors for Shriners Children’s. “Things are moving forward here. And we have a blessed history.”

Dr. Guy Caldwell served as the first chief of staff and treated patients in his office before construction of the new hospital was complete. The hospital was strategically located at the end of the trolley line, making it easier for patients from out of town to get to the hospital after arriving by train.

The founders knew right away they had something good on their hands. “It took off like gangbusters,” Caskey said. “They began saying then they should have them in various locations.”

The hospital also began to expand its services. Shriners Children’s moved into orthopedics and opened burn clinics. Today, the hospitals also treat complex spine injuries, colorectal and

Services available at the Shreveport hospital include orthopedics, craniofacial, fractures, sports medicine, scoliosis, cerebral palsy, limb length discrepancy and juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

On May 12, 1922, the cornerstone was placed for the first hospital where it still stands today, at 3100 Samford Ave. in Shreveport.

Since then, Shriners Hospital for Children changed its name to Shriners Children’s and expanded to 21 state-of-the-art medical facilities around the world. They have served more than 1.5 million children and their families with specialty medical care, regardless of their ability to pay.

The Shreveport hospital makes custom-fitted prosthetics in its Prosthetics and Orthotics Department. The hospital also had a motion analysis lab, Caskey said. Electronic sensors in the floor of the lab track a patient’s gait walking across the room. The data collected in the lab allows the tending physician to decide how to treat the patient and helps track progress.

Shriners Children’s in Shreveport accepts referrals for patients from western Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and east Texas.

“There is a large number of children who, if we weren’t here, wouldn’t get the care they need. Their families don’t have the means for care, much less for travel.

That’s one of the reasons this was one of the first places picked.

This was all farms and oil fields. We had an economic need.”

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION The Shriners Centennial Celebration will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 16, with formal remarks at 11 a.m. That’s the anniversary date of the first patient being treated there. “It was a young lady from Red River Parish with a club foot,” Martin said. “We have her original braces that were used to correct it here in the building. It’s pretty awesome to still have those.”

On that day, guests will be able to see even more unusual historic memorabilia, Martin said.

“Back in 1902, they had reusable needles,” she said. “The saws they used were hand saws. Medicine has come so far in the past 100 years. Really over the past 30. Things that were once surgeries are now procedures. The need for long overnight stays is no longer necessary.”

CELEBRATION GALA The celebration will continue that weekend with the 1920s-themed “A Grand Affair” gala Sept. 17 at the Horseshoe Riverdome. It will celebrate Shriners patients, employees, board members, Shriners, volunteers, and donors. The night will feature a seafood buffet, an open bar, silent and live auctions and music by the George Hancock Band and Windstorm. A reception will open the night at 6 p.m. Dinner and entertainment will start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $150 per person or tables of eight are $1,200.

RADIOTHON Cumulus Radio will host the fourth annual Shriners Children’s Radiothon on December 1 and 2 from 6am to 6pm on several of their stations including 101.1 KRMD, 102.9 Magic, Q97.3, and 100.1 Lite Rock. Last year’s radiothon raised more than $18,000 for the care of children at Shriners Children’s Shreveport.

Caskey said he is proud to be a part of the past, present and future of Shriners Children’s.

“I feel this kinship with an incredible bunch of guys,” he said. “We are where we are today because of the smart thinking of our forefathers.

It’s great to be a part of that, knowing our legacy will continue.”

Even the way Shriners Children’s receives patients has changed in a century of service. “In the old days, you had to get a recommendation to go there,” Caskey said. “They would evaluate you and determine whether they could help you. Now, you just call an 800-number, and they will book an appointment. “It’s an amazing thing. If you think we can help you, call us. If we can treat you, we will.”

Martin said that the centennial celebration not only honors Shriners Children’s past but carries it into the future. “It’s amazing to think that in 100 years, no one we know will be here,” Martin said. “But Shriners will be because it provides life-changing care. We evolved from treating polio patients when we opened in the1920s to treating sports injuries in 2022. There’s no telling what we will be able to treat in next 100 years. We are excited to expand our footprint.”

A kick-off party was held on January 20 at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Ryan Bicknell. And Shriners Children’s Shreveport has more events lined up to celebrate a century of serving children and their families.

CORNERSTONE COMMEMORATION The festivities begin May 12 with the centennial cornerstone commemoration. The hospital has a photo of the original ceremony to set the cornerstone and plans to recreate that photo with the hospital staff, Shriners, Masons, civic leaders, and the public. “It’s an awesome picture,” said Jennifer Martin, director of development for Shriners Children’s. “It’s the very first marker that Shriners was here.”

The original building was torn down in 1983, Martin said. That cornerstone was preserved and is in the Shrine room at the hospital. It will be on stage for the commemoration.

Strawberry Lemonade

weet, fruity, and refreshing, Spiked Strawberry Lemonade is the perfect spring and summer cocktail. It is super easy to make and full of fresh fruit.

Strawberry Lemonade (1/4 cup) Store-bought strawberry lemonade is most accessible, but you could also make it yourself!

Strawberries (4-6 sliced) You can use fresh strawberries or frozen. Make sure to use sliced strawberries - they are easier to defrost and eat when you’ve finished the drink.

Simple Syrup (1 teaspoon) Purchase ready in-store or make your own at home! It’s only 2 ingredients (sugar and water) and takes 5 minutes - easy! Or skip it if the drink is sweet enough already.

Lemon (1 sliced) A fresh lemon to cut into slices to decorate the drink.

Vodka (1.5 ounces) Your favorite vodka – Tito’s Vodka is always a great choice!

Gather all ingredients before you start making anything. This drink tastes best with fresh strawberries but if you are using frozen strawberries, either thaw them by leaving them in a bowl until they are ready or use a microwave to defrost the strawberries first.

Slice 4-6 strawberries. Add the simple syrup to a rocks glass. (Leave the simple syrup out for a drink that is lower in sugar). Then add the sliced strawberries to the glass. Use a cocktail muddler to mash the strawberries into the syrup. Doing this adds more strawberry flavor to the drink. You can also do this with a spoon or fork.

Add ice to the top of the glass. Add an ounce and a half of vodka, and then add the strawberry lemonade.

Stir the drink to combine all the flavors. Add a twist of lemon, sliced strawberries, a mint leaf for garnish, and then serve!

TIP: To make a twisted lemon slice for garnish, cut thin slices of lemon. Lay a slice flat and cut just from the center out to the edge on one segment of the lemon. You’ll now have an opening. Twist each part of the opening in the opposite direction and lay on top of your drink.

Boil

nvite your family and friends and dig into this messy, yummy crawfish boil. Combining crawfish, corn, onions, lemons, mushrooms, and potatoes, this is a dish you’ll crave over and over.

INGREDIENTS

1 sack (about 30-35 pounds) of live Louisiana crawfish 1 4.5lb container Zatarain’s Crawfish, Shrimp & Crab Boil 1 8oz bottle of Zatarain’s Concentrated Shrimp & Crab Boil 3 ounces Cayenne pepper 3 ounces garlic powder 1 bag of small red potatoes (about 3 pounds) 3 pounds yellow onions, halved 6 lemons, halved 4 heads of garlic, halved 8 frozen 2-inch cuts of corn on the cob 2 packages (~10oz) of whole white button mushrooms 2 large bags of ice Large ice chest 80-quart boiling pot Add other seafood or vegetables to your liking

Open the sack of crawfish and pour them into a large ice chest with a drain. Add enough water to cover the crawfish and allow them to move around a bit. With a gloved hand, pick through the crawfish and remove dead crawfish, sticks, grass, and any other foreign objects.

Drain the water from the ice chest and keep crawfish in a shaded area while preparing for the boil.

Place the basket in the pot and fill halfway with water. Add all the seasonings and spices. Place the lid on the pot and set the propane burner on high.

Bring water to boil. When the pot begins to steam, set a timer for 12 minutes.

After 12 minutes, remove the lid. Add the crawfish and vegetables. Replace lid. When the pot begins to steam again, cook for another 5 to 7 minutes.

Shut off the propane flame and remove the lid.

Stir with a cooking paddle to release heat from the pot. Add ice to help the crawfish absorb the seasoning and to stop the crawfish from continuing to cook.

Soak the crawfish for 10 minutes, pull the basket out of the water, let drain, toss onto your platter and serve hot!

Regardless of the vegetables and spices you use in your crawfish recipe, the best way to serve is on a platter or lay the crawfish on parchment paper across a long table. Gather for a great time with family and friends and enjoy the deliciousness!

AND ANOTHER THING…

Here’s the deal…

The Final Four in New Orleans just ended, which means basketball season is over. (We don’t count the NBA as “basketball season” because it’s year-’round, except for two weeks in August when each dude signs a new contract and jumps to another team.)

So for us, hoops season is done until late fall. But for Mike McConathy, it’s done after 66 years of playing, first as a toddler gym rat, then as an All-America player at both Airline High in Bossier City and Louisiana Tech, and finally as a coach for the past 40 years, give or take.

For McConathy, it was always more give, less take. If you know him, and if you design a Final Four or Mount Rushmore of your favorite people, he’s probably on it.

He retired last month after 23 years as head coach at Northwestern State. Before that, he spent 16 seasons building the program, from its birth, at Bossier Parish Community College. As you read this, he’s the winningest college basketball coach in state history with 682 wins, which is a lot of time outs and sweaty towels and jump shots and tip-ins.

And bus rides. And suppers of cold pizza. If getting to 682 is a picnic, a lot of Styrofoam is involved.

e’re sneaking some sports into SB, something to get used to since we live, after all, in the Sportsman’s Paradise.

Don’t panic. Understand the disclaimer that when we say “sports,” we’re not talking about stories on how to build a duck blind or jack up your four-wheel drive or field dress a buck.

(If it’s a doe and you want to dress her for the cotillion, we’ll talk.

Different ballgame.)

And we’re not going to report much on camouflage — unless it goes really well with a spectacular pair of pumps we found on sale. Then, all bets are off.

So, we’re not talking point spreads and two-deep depth charts and who might be the most underpaid tackle or the most overpaid shortstop. Yawn City. But golf and pickleball? What makes a good tailgate appetizer? Maybe what to wear to the club championship? Stay tuned. We’ll have just enough sports to go around.

Example: this starter-kit sports story is about sports — but it isn’t about sports. Not really. It’s a “people story” disguised as something that has to do with basketball. Sports is just a backdrop for the real thing.

The best “sports” stories are just that.

He and forever wife Connie, herself a teacher deluxe, have been even more of a dynamic duo off the court than on. Community service, raking a yard here with his team, putting in a flower bed there, cleaning up this and that, teaching his team that once you graduate, no one will ask you to hit a free throw. But they will, as God asked Adam, ask you to get to work in the garden.

Mike and Connie’s guys graduated far, far above the national average. Now they are side-by-side with you, making a positive difference. They didn’t leave the practice of winning back at the gym in the dirty jerseys hamper.

What those players needed as they were coming of age was a point man to show them the way, and that point man proved to be an old shooting guard, a Shreveport-Bossier native, a natural athlete with reddish hair that’s now turned gray, thanks to time and charging fouls that should have been called blocks.

In the Buddy Davis Press Box in Aillet Stadium in Ruston, there’s everyone’s favorite picture of McConathy, seeming to pass the ball behind his back, a black-and-white mid-’70s shot when he was on his way to becoming the program’s No.2 single-season and career all-time leading scorer. Since it’s a pass — and since prevailing wisdom is that McConathy never, ever passed — the joke has been that the picture is the hoops equivalent of a photo of the Loch Ness Monster playing HORSE with Big Foot.

Then a friend one day, studying the photo more carefully, said, “Wait. Maybe it’s McConathy about to CATCH a late pass behind his back, right before he dribbles once and shoots…”

Surrrre. That’s it. Has to be. Definitely makes more sense.

Of course, for any perceived selfishness on the court — and his teams had to have him score — McConathy more than made up for it off the court. God love him for everything, but especially for that.
