ear. We are all experiencing a great deal of fear right now. We are in a time of crisis as this pandemic is crippling everything. While everyone is taking the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of this horrible virus in order to save lives, it may not be enough to save businesses from the devastation of being closed indefinitely. No one knows when the world will get back to normal and that’s a very scary thought.

SB Magazine worked feverishly to get the April issue to the printer before they stopped production. We offered in-house day care to our staff so they would feel secure about their children’s well-being.

Within a matter of 24 hours we asked them to work from home for their safety. That’s how fluid this event is. So much is unknown.

Because of the sales and print cycles of monthly publications such as SB Magazine, we will not be producing a May issue – which was to be our Special Edition 20th Anniversary magazine. As of this writing, we are planning a May/June issue that will come out June 1st. But like so many other things in our world right now, we can only plan and hope and most importantly, have faith that Corona Virus will have run its course. We must trust that our brilliant doctors and scientists will be able to find a medicine that will prevent or treat COVID-19. We must remain positive and take this one day – one minute – at a time.

We must pull together (while maintaining our social distance) and help one another to survive the fallout of this pandemic.

It all comes back to faith. Some of my favorite verses from the Bible speak to our sense of faith.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1).

THE DOODLE BIRTHDAY PAW-TY The Doodle Birthday Paw-ty was held on Saturday, January 25th in honor of Rosie Kayser and Ty Green’s birthday. Eighteen of their Golden Doodle friends joined the celebration. The party started last year to get the puppies together that came from the ABCs Puppy Zs in Dallas, TX. There are seven families in Shreveport that have puppies from this breeder and we thought it would be fun to reunite them all. This year we extended the party to more of our Golden Doodle friends and the party almost doubled in size. The dogs all ran around together and had a great time and left with a Paw-ty favor! Snacks served at the party included pupcorn, scooby snacks, and salty dog punch. We hope to keep it as an annual tradition.

THE ROBBY’S The Robinson Film Center rolled out the red carpet for “The Robby’s” which is our areas version of the Oscars, held on the eve of Hollywood’s Academy Awards. Guests wore their Oscar best while supporting North Louisiana’s only nonprofit art house theater. This Oscar-entertaining event included a red carpet complete with adoring fans from Captain Shreve and Byrd High Schools, paparazzi, Pendley Piano Bar, photo booths, an Oscar Ballot contest, open bar with specialty cocktails and gold star delicacies like a seafood bar, charcuterie station, pasta bar, and Lowder’s Baking Co King Cake Station. A silent auction was comprised of fabulous travel, trips, jewelry, art and health & beauty items and experiences to make anyone feel like a real Hollywood Star.

The Civil Rights Museum is built around The Lorraine Motel, where The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. With more than 260 artifacts and captivating interactive displays, the museum chronicles the Civil Rights Movement from the 17th century to the present in moving and intriguing ways.

For music lovers, an essential pilgrimage for rock ‘n’ roll fans is a visit to Elvis’ Graceland—the second most-visited house in America, only to the White House.

There’s also the Memphis Rock ‘N’ Soul Museum for an all-encompassing journey through the city’s toe-tapping history vital for music aficionados.

MEMPHIS IS ALSO AN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN CAPITAL The Pyramid may seem out of place to you but it’s not to the locals. Memphis, Tennessee was named after the ancient Egyptian city of the same name located on the Nile River, much the same as we are on the Mississippi. There are tributes to our African namesake found all throughout the city: the replica statue of Ramses and the Institute of Egyptian Art & Archaeology at the University of Memphis, the aesthetic design of the Memphis Zoo, and the Pyramid that opened as a sports and entertainment arena in 1991 but is today a Bass Pro Shop and one of the largest retail stores in the world.

MEMPHIS HAS A FASCINATING HISTORY The Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement and rock ‘n’ roll are just a few pieces of Memphis. Starting in the 1840s, Memphis served as the heart of America’s cotton trade— where Front Street in the downtown area was dubbed “Cotton Row” since more than 75 percent of the nation’s cotton came through the city. Walk in the footsteps of cotton trad-

BEALE STREET AND BEYOND Recognized as the home of blues music, this 1.8-mile historic district in downtown Memphis is deemed the “heart” of Memphis music and entertainment. Favorites on the drag include B.B. King’s Blues Club, known for continuously playing homage to its blues roots; Alfred’s on Beale, which presents a mix of cover bands; and Silky O’Sullivan’s Pub, where blues singers enjoy backup from two grand pianos.

There are many other places to catch live tunes outside of Beale Street as well. The historic Levitt Shell in Overton Park—where Elvis performed with Johnny Cash—has free concerts Thursday through Sunday in summer and fall and is family friendly. You can also bring your own food and drinks or buy some there. Just remember to take a blanket or chairs. The concert series at the lovely Memphis Botanic Garden attracts national acts from all genres, from country’s Little Big Town to classic rock’s Steve Miller Band.

Meanwhile, Minglewood Hall in Midtown offers dozens of shows annually in a cleverly repurposed bread factory, and the Mollie Fontaine Lounge pairs live jazz with delightful small plates.

VISIT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH Chances are you have come seeking barbeque, and Memphis will not disappoint. Just be aware that some of the best meals of your life will come out of a building that looks like it should be condemned. So don’t write off an eatery because it’s in a basement, an alley, or possibly boarded up. Don’t let the ramshackle fool you.

It’s best to attack the barbeque scene knowing exactly what you want to try. Dry ribs? Go to the Rendezvous. Wet ribs? Nachos? Wings? Head on over to one of Central BBQ’s locations. A pulled pork sandwich? The Bar-B-Q Shop or Interstate will fix you up. Looking for something a little more adventurous? Cozy Corner is known for their Cornish

hens. Payne’s is the place locals like to keep a secret, but they will welcome you with many fine offerings including a grilled bologna sandwich. They are also known for their mustard-based, rather than mayo-based, slaw. (The answer to “Do you want slaw on that?” is always “Yes!”) And finally, if you are in a rush, or just want one more taste before you leave town, pop into a Top’s and get a cheeseburger with pulled pork, barbeque sauce, and yes, slaw, added.

EXPERIENCE A FEW ‘ONLY-IN-MEMPHIS’ EVENTS Memphis’ robust events calendar boasts an endless roster of diverse happenings worthy of building your trip around. The blockbuster Beale Street Music Festival at the Memphis in May International Festival also hosts the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. Other tune-filled affairs include the Memphis Acoustic Guitar Festival in June, and the Delta Fair and Music Festival, Gonerfest (a gathering of emerging rock ‘n’ roll artists) and Bona Fide Blues Festival in September.

Some other unusual yet entertaining events to consider are the Rajun Cajun Crawfish Festival in April, when more than 16,000 pounds of Louisiana crawfish are consumed; the Southern Hot Wing Festival in April, featuring a cooking contest with over 50 wing experts; and the International Goat Days Festival in September, which pays tribute to the versatile farm animal (naturally).

THE GREAT OUTDOORS OFFERS MUCH TO EXPLORE If you take advantage of our great outdoor spaces, you’re guaranteed to have fun, plus burning off a few calories can’t hurt after all that barbecue. The Mississippi River is by far the greatest natural attraction, and there are many ways to enjoy it including cruising down the river itself on a paddle wheeler for sightseeing or a dinner cruise by Memphis Riverboats. Grab an Explore Bike Share bike or a Bird Scooter and cruise through the riverside parks (Tom Lee, Beale Street Landing, Fourth Bluff, Mud Island and River Garden). Walking is just fine too! Big River Crossing will take you from Memphis to West Memphis, Arkansas, in just a matter of minutes and it offers up the greatest views of the Mighty Mississippi. (After the sun goes down, don’t miss Mighty Lights, a nightly light show that illuminates Big River Crossing and the neighboring “M Bridge.”)

Shelby Farms Park features running/hiking/biking trails, paddleboard and kayak rentals, paintball, laser tag, zip lines, horseback riding, fishing and a world class playground. It’s also accessible from the heart of the city as well as the suburbs via the Shelby Farms Park Greenline. Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park has campgrounds, canoeing and trails. Overton Park is in the heart of the city and is known for its old growth forest, friendly golf course, dog park and a “yard” big enough for everyone called the Greensward. Overton Park also has two playgrounds.

WHEN TO VISIT You can go in the summer, but it’s going to be brutal. Prepare yourself for 100°+ temperatures and 90% humidity.

Yes, it can be done, just remember to stay hydrated, park in the shade, and don’t forget your sunscreen.

The best times to visit Memphis are April and May or October and November. These short seasons are brief reliefs from the uncomfortable (and long) summer and winter seasons.

omestic violence is an epidemic across the nation that often leaves survivors to deal with physical damage that stifles the victims’ chances of moving forward to live successful lives. In 2019 the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s office processed more than 500 felony domestic violence and sexual assault cases. Britney A. Green is the Chief of Domestic Violence at the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office who handles felony domestic violence cases on a daily basis.

After seeing that many survivors of domestic violence had been left without a smile because of damaged teeth, she knew something had to be done to serve the needs of the victims.

Green proposed an idea to restore smiles and confidence to victims of domestic violence to her boss, James E. Stewart, the district attorney, who approved of the idea. Concern turned into inspiration, leading the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office along with the Family Justice Center to create the Abounding Smiles initiative in order to provide free dental services to the survivors of domestic violence.

Everyone knows the importance of a winning smile. Damaged teeth can affect peoples’ confidence, self-esteem,

and their ability to be gainfully employed. Many domestic violence victims suffer dental injuries, mainly loosened, broken, and lost teeth. Many are unable to afford dental repairs. These dental injuries have a significant impact on the lives of victims. Abounding Smiles is special because the initiative has a direct and immediate impact on the lives of the victims of domestic violence.

Abounding Smiles is a coalition of caring dentists who have agreed to restore domestic violence survivors’ smiles, at no cost to the patient. Part of the mission is to remove any barriers that might stand in the way of restoring the victims’ smiles. If victims require medical care prior to treatment, their care is coordinated through David Raines Community Health Centers. If patients need transportation, transportation is provided to and from their dental appointments.

Abounding Smiles is a program that the district attorney’s office is especially proud of. The most exciting aspect of the program is hearing from the survivors, and their stories of how Abounding Smiles is changing their lives. One victim had been suffering from daily toothaches, to the point of not being able to eat on her most painful days. She began un-

dergoing treatment with the Southern Roots team and Dr. Blaine Calahan. These dental professionals have changed this woman’s life—for the first time in years, she is pain-free.

Green is most proud of the coalition of amazing dentists, who have stepped up to volunteer their services.

The volunteers are a skilled group of professionals who are committed to improving the lives of people in our community. Green is also proud of the community partners, the Northwest Louisiana Family Justice Center and David Raines Community Health Centers. They have stood with the district attorney’s office in making sure that the program is successful.

The creators of the Abundant Smiles initiative continue to seek dentists who have a desire to join the program. As people learn about the Abundant Smiles program, requests for services increase and referrals from programs like Project Celebration come in. More volunteer practitioners are necessary in order to meet the goal to serve all victims who qualify for the program.

Prairie Style Meets Mid-Century Modern on Cross Lake This Cross Lake home is a beautiful blend of Prairie and Ranch styles, making it a true Mid-Century Modern. The simple exterior design is balanced by a multi-gabled roof that adds just the right amount of interest to the home. A covered ‘dog-trot’ style outdoor kitchen, which separates the garage with the main house, offers an excellent place to entertain while enjoying views of the lake. With historic details and clean, modern lines—this home was designed to make life easier and more comfortable.

Believe-it-or-not—even in Shreveport—Frank Lloyd Wright influences today’s home design. Located on Cross Lake, this 6,482 square foot, 5 bedroom, 5.5 bath (3 full, 2 half ) residence was designed by architect Wiley Pollard and competed in 2013. No attention to detail or craftsmanship was spared. Custom walnut paneling warm the walls while the Caesarstone surfaces and marble flooring ground this amazing home. Built with steel construction, it features unobstructed views of Cross Lake from every room. A magnificent pool highlights panoramic views of over 400 feet of the waterfront. With all that said, what does it mean to be labeled a “Prairie Style” home?

Influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement, Frank Lloyd Wright was seeking an architectural alternative to the excesses of the Victorian era and the machine-based lifestyle of the Industrial Age. Typical homes of the day (1880-1920) had many small rooms, and Wright sought to ‘destroy the box’ with the Prairie Style.

To Wright, “destroying the box” meant creating a flow inside the house. He thought of the entire first floor as one room, and like all of his work, form followed function. He placed a horizontal emphasis on architectural elements—such as a one-story projection, grouped windows, a lowwalled porch, and geometric ornamentation—all SBMAG.NET

which were to be an extension of the exterior geometry and motifs. Seating, storage, and lighting were often built into the architecture of rooms, keeping them uncluttered. Surfaces were generally plain (not papered) and color schemes were neutral, monochromatic, or analogous.

The style was dubbed “prairie” after Wright published building plans he called “A House in a Prairie Town” in 1901. Its influence was far-ranging, making it popular from Kansas to Texas and reaching all areas of the country, as well as northern Europe and Australia.

Given today’s emphasis on sustainability and organic materials, it’s interesting to note that the designs of many the early Prairie Style homes embody the same sustainable fundaments that many homeowner strive to accomplish today—100 years after the style was introduced. Understanding Wright’s style will better help one appreciate this home feature on Cross Lake.

Purchased in 2016, homeowner Clint Bartlett fell in love with the modern conveniences and layout of its interior. Bartlett insists “this home gives me every convenience I need along with the luxuries I want.” All that was needed to do to make the home “complete” was to install some much needed landscaping, as the interior of the home was masterfully decorated, livable and inviting.

How does Bartlett showcase all the convenient luxuries of this Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home? Step inside and see how the open floor plan, indirect lighting, and kitchen—used as an extension of the living area— showcase how the 20th-century Prairie Style continues through today.

T

hese are challenging times. Like everyone, you are concerned about keeping your family safe and healthy, and you’re doing your part to help protect your community from the effects of the coronavirus. And if you’re an investor, you must also address your financial situation. How should you respond to the current market volatility and recent declines in investment prices?

For one thing, try to avoid what many others seem to be doing: panicking. The market selloff may feel unsettling, but it appears to be driven as much, or more, by fear and panic than by economic or financial reality.

Uncertainty is high, but there are reasons – solid, objective reasons – that provide more confidence in the longer-term outlook, suggesting that conditions still warrant an eventual rebound. U.S. unemployment entered this situation near a 50-year low, with solid wage growth. We will see a temporary disruption to the labor market, of course, along with a decline in economic activity, but households entered this period in generally good shape. Furthermore, housing market

indicators were moving upward and the decline in mortgage rates could add more strength. Also, the Federal Reserve’s recent interest rate cuts, taking short-term rates back near 0%, will support the economic rebound as the impact of the virus containment efforts eventually fade.

In addition, while further volatility and the potential for further weakness will likely continue, the steep drops we’ve already seen indicate that the financial markets have “priced in” the likelihood of a short- term recession, which may mean that the worst of the stock market pain has already been endured, though, of course, there are no guarantees.

First, though, it seems likely that the investment world will finally calm down only when the health situation shows signs of containment – and this will inevitably happen, despite the grim reports we are seeing these days. As a country, we have the motivation, the will, the solidarity and the resources to defeat the coronavirus and its effects, despite the pain and trauma it is now undoubtedly causing.

So, back to our original question: What should you do? Here are a few suggestions:

•

Remember why you’re investing. Given the market decline, you may be tempted to change your investment strategy. But keep in mind that your financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement, are longer-term than the shelf life of the coronavirus. These goals, not today’s headlines, should guide your decisions.

•

Re-evaluate your risk tolerance. The recent volatility provides a good test of your ability to weather shortterm swings in your portfolio. If you’re having a hard time coping with these losses, your portfolio may be positioned too aggressively for your risk tolerance. If so, you might want to adjust your port- folio mix to include more fixed-income securities, which can help provide more “downside” protection. However, this would also affect your long-term growth potential.

•

Look for buying opportunities. Stocks are now at their most compelling values in more than a decade – in other words, there are plenty of compelling investments out there. You can find many high-quality investments at very good prices, so you may want to consider taking advantage of the opportunity.

for your pets?

That’s the question pet parents are asking themselves these days. CBD works wonders for humans – why not for animals? You might want to just keep the leash on until we have a little more information.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CBD, THC AND HEMP? If you don’t know by now, CBD is Cannabidiol, a naturally occurring compound found in the resinous flower of cannabis. This plant has been used as a medicine for at least a thousand years. Its therapeutic properties are still being researched and tested by scientists and doctors around the world. According to Project CBD, it’s a safe, non-addictive substance that is one of more than a hundred “phytocannabinoids,” which are unique to cannabis and endow the plant with its robust therapeutic profile. It’s cousin, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is another important medicinally active phytocannabi-

noid. Unlike THC that will make a person feel intoxicated, CBD can actually lesson or neutralize the psychoactive effects of THC. It is therapeutically potent as well as non-intoxicating. CBD can provide relief from conditions such as chronic pain, inflammation, anxiety, depression and arthritis just to name a few. Now we’ll throw hemp into the mix to make it even more confusing. CBD hemp oil is extracted from the hemp plant which is commonly grown industrially to be used in research and as a raw material for other products. Hemp oil and cannabis oil may have some common features but they are grown differently.

Industrially grown hemp contains high amounts of CBD

(cannabidiol) whereas, cannabis contains high amounts of THC (the intoxicating ingredient).

WHAT’S LEGAL AND WHAT’S NOT The most recent newsletter from the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine, (Volume 28, No.1, Winter 20192020) addressed the question of CBD Oil use in veterinary medicine. The federal and state legislation has answered some of the questions posed by practitioners to the Board, but many issues are left unresolved. It stated, “Prior to 2018, both State and Federal law did not differentiate between the possession and sale of marijuana and hemp-derived CBD. Along

with its better-known counterpart, THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the chemical that produces the marijuana high), CBD is one of more than 400 compounds found in the oils of cannabis plant species, which include marijuana and hemp. Even in states that decriminalized the possession and use of marijuana, CBD remained classified as a schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act with its prohibition of the possession and use by any person. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp (cannabis and cannabis derivatives with no more than .03% on a dry weight basis of THC) from the definition of marijuana in the definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act. The passage of the Farm Bill prompted the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy to issue a guidance document, which it later rescinded, noting that “although federal law had changed concerning the sale of CBD oil, state law had not.” The revised guidance document cautions licensees to comply with the new state provisions regarding registrations governing retail sales.

If you manage to understand any of this you will also understand why veterinarians are reluctant to prescribe this treatment for fear of breaking the law. It might also have something to do with the FDA’s concern that products containing CBD have not followed the traditional path to FDA approval. The therapeutic benefits have not been confirmed by well-controlled studies. The FDA also noted that the testing of some products containing CBD have shown inaccuracies in labeling regarding the identity and amounts of active ingredients.

Without more clarity on the safe use of cannabis and cannabis-derived products from the FDA, the American Veterinary Medicine Association isn’t in the position of advising veterinarians concerning the safe and effective use of the products.

OVER THE COUNTER HEMP-OIL PRODUCTS Many pet owners are moving forward

in their search for a viable option in the treatment of their pet’s illnesses. Numerous hemp oil products for dogs are now available at your local pet store. Hemp oil derived from cannabis contains CBD and a miniscule amount of THC which is toxic to dogs. You’ll want to make sure you read the label for hemp oil derived from hemp not cannabis. Hemp oil from hemp has been shown to be completely safe and has no known unsafe limit, though heavy doses can lead to sedation effects.

I heard someone say, “butterflies can’t see their wings. They can’t see how truly beautiful they are, but everyone else can. People are like that as well.” Perhaps this is why we see so many selfhelp books at the bookstore, magazines filled with beautiful fashion models, makeup tips, the latest hair styles, websites that target women desperate to fit the mold of today’s definition of “beautiful.”

We look at ourselves in the mirror and we can’t see the beauty that others find in us. We are our own worst critics, too blind to see what others see.

I know plenty of women who fall into this trap.

I’m always surprised that they find themselves physically unattractive or in desperate need of improvement. Every day we are bombarded with social media, digital, print and television advertisements with products or tips on how to become more beautiful. Special creams that are guaranteed to magically wipe away wrinkles. Chin straps that lift saggy jowls. Waist trainers promising the elusive tiny waistline. Doctors and med spa technicians ready with the latest filler or fat elimination procedure. It’s a lot to keep up with so we’re breaking it down for you. What really works and what doesn’t.

ROUND FACE:

We’ll start with the definition of beauty and go from there. According to Merriam-Webster, beauty is the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.1

Some of the better options include haircuts that are below your chin. With curly or wavy hair, going too short may add more width to the cheek area.

Short styles that add volume on top can elongate your face.

How do we measure beauty? Why, with a ruler of course. No, seriously. A perfect human face is said to be in proportion to the golden/divine ratio (the length of the face being 1.618 times the width of the face). The ratios in 1.618 includes the length of eyes vs. lips; top to nose vs. nose to chin’s length; the first and the second upper teeth; nose to chin’s length; the first and the second upper and many more.2 Is this real?

Is beauty measured by what comes closest to the golden ratio? More importantly, why does this have to involve math?

What ever happened to “beauty is what appeals to the eye of the beholder?”

SQUARE FACE:

You may want to play down a strong, angular jaw. Texture, in the form of curls or choppy ends, does a brilliant job at this.

This is a wonderful website with pictures of hairstyles on celebrity models. You’ll be able to compare your face shape to one of those ladies and get a better idea of might work for you. The bottom line is, wear what feels best on you.

What constitutes total beauty? Outward appearance, including the face, the hair, teeth, body structure, is something you can easily work on to improve. Take body structure for instance. We may not be able to change our body type but we can certainly manage our weight. You can’t change the shape of your face, unless you undergo extensive plastic surgery. You are born with the color skin you will be buried with unless you go in for bleaching or spend a great deal of time in the sun. What can you do to improve your physical appearance?

Let’s take it from the top – your hair. But first, find the shape of your face. Some hairstyles look better if they are suited to your face. Everyone’s face is distinct but generally speaking there are six shapes: oval, long, square, round, diamond, and heart-shaped. Don’t worry if you can’t pin-point the shape. Hair style advice by face shape is aimed at women with dominant features they might want to play down – or play up. If your shape isn’t so obvious then consider the texture and thickness of your hair to make styling choices. The basic rule of finding a haircut for your face shape is to highlight your best features. Here are a few other basic rules you may wish to follow if you remain unsure. HEART-SHAPED FACE:

Try to draw attention to your eyes and cheekbones with bangs or volume along the sides.

LONG FACE:

The longer your hair is, the longer it will make your face look. It's often best to go with shorter styles or those that have plenty of volume. Bangs are great as well.

OVAL FACE:

Nearly every hairstyle flatters this shape.

If yours is on the longer side, follow some of the suggestions for long faces. Finding a good style for your hair texture is probably more important.

Now for the face. Most women don’t care to leave the house without “putting on their face.” Everyone has their own special technique that they’ve developed over the years. For those just beginning, it’s good to know that there is an easy order to follow. Remember, there are no set rules – this is just a sound routine to use until you find what works best for you.

Begin by prepping your skin with a good primer. This will provide a good working surface and will help your foundation stay on longer. Next, frame your eyes by filling in your brows (if needed) with an easy to use eyebrow pencil. A heavy hand creates a more dramatic look while soft, hairlike strokes will create softness.

Eye shadowing should be applied next, before you apply foundation, simply because you can wipe away any residue that might occur during the application process and not have to reapply your foundation. Once your eyes are complete, move to your foundation.

Here again, consider the time of day, what sort of routine you’re expecting to have and how much coverage you need. Your foundation should match your natural skin tone as closely as possible. Many foundations are formulated with a sun screen which is great if you plan to be outdoors for much of your day.

Concealer, cheek color and contouring should come last.

Lipstick for the lips and a good setting spray will complete your look. Once you are finished with all your applications take a good look in your mirror to make sure everything is blended and has a natural look to it. A good makeup routine shouldn’t take hours.

If you enjoy creeping yourself out, you’ve got the perfect opportunity this month, thanks to Shreveport Maestro Kermit Poling.

The maestro will be leading his Marshall [Texas] Symphony helping to rededicate the newly refurbished Memorial City Hall. It’s happening on May 8 at 7 p.m. in the Performance Center at 110 E Houston Street. The music is specially designed for this event and it will complement the showing of the spooky, German expressionist film “Nosferatu,” an unauthorized version of the Dracula story. It’s the 1922 horror film directed by F.W. Murnau and stars Max Schreck as the bony, spooky Count Orlok. The version is unauthorized because it’s an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula.” Several changes were made in Stoker’s original, including renaming the main character Orlok and calling him Nosferatu instead of vampire. That wasn’t enough for the Bram Stoker Estate, which sued the movie company to have the film destroyed. Fortunately for cult movie fans, and local film score composers, by the time the German courts ruled that all copies of the print had to be destroyed, it had already been distributed.

“The original score is long lost,” Poling said, “so there is no version that has the original score because it’s a silent film. About six years ago, the South Arkansas Symphony, of which I am Music Director, commissioned a score for the film.” Poling said he and the symphony performed it live as the movie played on the big screen in the old Rialto Theatre in El Dorado. It has played since, including as part of the Shreveport Symphony Series. That should come as no surprise if you know Kermit Poling.

He is currently the Associate Conductor of the Shreveport Symphony, Music Director of the South Arkansas Symphony, Music Director of the Marshall Symphony, Music Director of the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet, and Resident Conductor of the Shreveport Summer Music Festival.

When you don’t see Poling with a baton in his hand, he’s probably at his other job, running Red River Radio, KDAQ out at LSU-Shreveport.

Poling said he and his colleagues in the West Edge String Quartet will be helping dedicate the new city hall performance space. “It just opened. It’s a very cool place. We’ll have a big screen and we’ll be performing right alongside.” The Quartet are violinist Elizabeth O’Bannon, violist Borys Smolaga and ‘cellist Ruth Drummond. Poling will be on keyboards this time, so they’re just calling it the West Edge Quartet for this outing, which is part of the Marshall Symphony’s season.

So, how does one go about scoring a cult classic silent film?

Poling explained, “I have scored several films, several silent films. I have also scored one or two other films and documentaries. I approached it much the same was as I would doing any film, or for that matter my ballets. I have twelve full length ballets that are performed by companies all over the country. You get inspired by the story. You try to find

something that relates to the characters. I tend to attach a particular musical theme to a character.”

Here’s a little background on the film. The original score was composed by Hans Erdmann and was supposed to be performed by live orchestra during the screening. Over the years, most of the original score has been lost, and composers have written or improvised music to enhance the silent film experience.

Critic Roger Ebert added it to his list of “The Great Movies.” Of Nosferatu, he wrote, “I admire it more for its artistry and ideas, its atmosphere and images, than for its ability to manipulate my emotions like a skillful modern horror film.

It knows none of the later tricks of the trade, like sudden threats that pop in from the side of the screen. But Nosferatu remains effective: It doesn’t scare us, but it haunts us.”

Poling fans also have an opportunity early in April to catch his original ballet, Snow White, which was commissioned by the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet in 2003.

It’s scheduled for April 5 at 3 p.m. at Riverview Theatre in Shreveport and will feature the original choreography of SMB Artistic Director Kendra Meiki. “There is not another full-length Snow White [ballet], which to me is bizarre,” Poling said.

The company has performed Snow White several times, according to Poling. “It’s also been done throughout the country. It’s been done by the Pennsylvania Ballet, San Antonio, Delaware, Des Moines.”

In addition to “Snow White,” SMB has also commissioned “The Wizard of Oz” and “Aladdin.”

by Poling. “The fact that they have commissioned all new works that are really theirs—they’re doing their choreography, they’re bringing in their sets—is pretty amazing,” he said. “I’ve been really impressed. They did a beautiful job incoming up with their original production and Kendra [Meiki] updates it each time she does it.

WHAT IS IT? According to the World Health Organization, COVID-19 is a new strain of a respiratory virus discovered in 2019, which has not previously been identified in humans. Coronaviruses belong to a large family of viruses that are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and humans. COVID-19 is in the same coronavirus family as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle-East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). This particular strain of the virus can cause a range of symptoms from mild respiratory symptoms which includes fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties to more severe symptoms such as pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and death.Â

WHO IS AT RISK? The CDC has released a statement suggesting the most vulnerable population includes older adults and those with existing underlying health concerns such as lung diseases, heart diseases, and those with compromised immune systems. So far, there is no evidence to suggest that children are at increased risk.

The Northwest Louisiana Pediatric Society released guidelines to the public reassuring parents that COVID-19 infection is very rarely serious in children.

The problem with this novel virus is that no one has previously been exposed and therefore, no one has any natural immunities to the virus. The CDC believes that 40%-70% of people worldwide will contract this virus.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET IT? All members of your household should be monitored daily for signs of respiratory illness and fever. Make sure to continue the well-known hand-washing guidelines, limiting social outings, and disinfecting surfaces regularly. If you suspect a person in your family has contracted the virus, call your doctor before heading in to the clinic. They have precautions that they will follow to limit your contact with others. Make sure that everyone in your home self-quarantines for 14 days.

Unless your symptoms are bad enough for you to be hospitalized, you will be asked to treat the symptoms at home under the guidance of a physician.

WHAT DO “SOCIAL DISTANCING” AND “FLATTEN THE CURVE” MEAN? By now, we have all heard the term, “flattening the curve” and we have probably seen a graph that looks something like this:

ARE WE OVERHYPING OR UNDERREACTING? The current policies and procedures that have been put in place to help flatten this curve include self-isolation, social distancing, reducing the number of people allowed to gather at a time, and closures. These procedures are important because, as we learn how this virus spreads, we do not need to overtax our health care systems. The idea behind flattening the curve is that we reduce the number of people that contract the virus at one time. If we allow the virus to spread with no intervention, we are likely to see a growth in positive cases that far exceed our ability to treat the patients due to lack of hospital beds, staff, medicine, supplies, etc. By practicing social distancing, we can significantly reduce the number of infections that occur at once. However, this also means that we prolong the amount of time it takes to see the virus die out. We may be looking at months before we see a significant reduction in Coronavirus. Social distancing refers to the practice of maintaining appropriate space between ourselves and others. If we find the need to go out in public, we should keep six feet of distance between us. We should remain at home and away from social gatherings as well. If we follow these guidelines, we can work together as a community to help keep this pandemic under control.

All of the school and public activity closures have me questioning whether we are overly cautious during this time.

I consulted with Dr. James C Patterson II, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport. He provided great insight into these questions and other questions of community mental health concerns as we all navigate through this difficult time together. Dr. Patterson reminded me that we need to find the balance in all of our challenges that we face during this time. “This is a significant disease with treatment algorithms that continue to evolve. Conservative measures such as those we are taking now should limit the spread and decrease morbidity and mortality. We have never done anything like this before, and new approaches like this are anxiety provoking in and of themselves." I followed up his answer with the question of how we can prepare as a community to cope with the anxiety. He reminded me that we will get through this, “that we will as a society and a community come out on the other side of this with a broader understanding of how to approach similar events in the future, if and when they occur.” As far as coping strategies, Dr. Patterson’s advice was to take advantage of the numerous technological

advancements at our fingertips: use phone calls, text messaging, and video chatting to communicate with your friends and loved ones. This virus is not our fault so we shouldn’t blame ourselves. Instead of living in fear or uncertainty, we should take a more proactive role by staying up-to-date on information from reputable sources. “Just because you see it on Facebook does NOT mean it's true. Go to the source, but be aware that the truth as we know it is changing on a near daily basis, as this pandemic progresses and our approach to it evolves. Use reliable sources such as the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization, or our own Louisiana Department of Health as well as our own information: www.lsuhs/coronavirus.” Furthermore, we should be resisting hoarding supplies; preparedness is not equal to stockpiling. Finally, if we find ourselves struggling with anxiety or depression during this time, seek mental health help.

The good news is that telemedicine is making its way to the forefront of the medical community now and we can get therapeutic services in the comfort of our own homes. Overall Dr. Patterson wanted to convey the message to “stay calm and make good choices”. Before Dr. Patterson concluded the interview, he left me with this final food for thought: “Don't forget the hardworking folks in the medical field. We come to work every day knowing that we are walking into a battle with this tiny little organism that is making people sick and unfortunately killing some. That's what we do. We care!

I also want to remind our community that they are fortunate to live in a place with an academic medical city which trains not only physicians but has a record of many of those staying in the community which prevents north Louisiana from experiencing the same level of physician shortage as many areas of the US. Plus, we have scientists who are working hard every day on finding cures for viruses like the coronavirus.”

My best takeaway from this bombardment of information is to lift each other up during this time and make sure to stayup-to-date with reliable information. We’re all in this battle together and we are fortunate enough to live during an era when extreme measures can be taken to secure the safety of the whole. Be well, wash your hands, see you soon.

There couldn’t be a better time to introduce our newest column – Crafter’s Corner. The Corona Virus has everyone on edge and the kids are probably getting a little bit of cabin fever. Let’s give them something fun and easy to do. And what could be more fun than to break up the homeschooling day with some arts and crafts? And what could be better than recycling toilet paper rolls?

TOILET PAPER ROLL SNAKES MATERIALS: empty toilet paper rolls paint paint brushes red ribbon googly eyes glue stapler

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Start by painting your toilet paper rolls in different colors.

Let them dry for a few minutes and then go back and add details with more paint.

2. The first tube will be the snake head and the last one will make the tail. Cut a piece of red ribbon about two to three inches longer than your toilet paper tubes are when they’re lined up.

3. Assembling Your Snake: Take your red ribbon and slide the first tube onto it, all the way down to the end. Pinch the end of the tube together on both sides to make it close up. Staple the red ribbon in between the pinched sides making sure the ribbon is secure and can’t be pulled out.

4. Now thread the last of your tubes onto the ribbon until you get to the last one. You’re going to repeat the same process but this time you want the extra ribbon to stick outside of the tube, forming the snake’s tongue. Secure the tube to the ribbon with staples.

5. The final step is to glue two googly eyes onto the snake’s head and you’re all set to play with your new pet snake.

1. Decorate your bunny in your favorite color paint. Cut ears, face and feet and nose from construction paper.

2. Glue three whiskers from pipe cleaners for each side in the center of the face.

Glue the nose where the whiskers come together.

3. Add googly eyes with glue.

Glue the ears on either side of the tube.

4. Paint three lines for the toes on the feet and glue flat edge down at the bottom of the tube.

held their 64th annual Oyster Party at Savioe’s. Over 300 physician members, legislators, and hospital administrators were among the guests that attended. Dr. James Bergeron has mastered the art of grilling oyster as it was his 51st year to sear oysters for this event. For 171 years, the Northwest Louisiana Medical Society has been assisting in the advancement of medical science and education, elevating the standards of medical practice and improving the health of our community.

The LSUS Foundation celebrated their Riverbend Revue with a Speakeasy Party held at East Ridge Country Club. The LSUS Foundation announced the Shreveport Committee of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of Louisiana, The Friends of the Spring St. Museum, and The Helen Mann Fund Committee as the 2020 Pilots of the Year for their contribution to LSU Shreveport. Those honored helped to bring the Spring Street Museum to LSU Shreveport. The gala event included an open bar, hors d’oeuvres and a seated dinner.

BARKUS & MEOUX JAZZ BRUNCH “WOOFSTOCK21: A MEWSIC FESTIVAL”

The Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Mardi Gras Jazz Brunch. “Woofstock 21: A Mewsic Festival” was held at Margaritaville Resort Casino. Royal ambassadors dressed as their favorite musical performers were presented as well as pet royals for the 21st annual jazz brunch. Captain Jean Johnson and Co-Captain Keith Woods ushered in some groovy cats during their royal tableau. Dressed as Britney Spears, Queen Kim Jensen was introduced with an entourage of Britney Spears lookalikes. King Alex Anderson dressed as Justin Timberlake danced through the aisles to reach his real-life sweetheart Queen Kim Jensen. All proceeds from Jazz brunch and auction were donated to animal nonprofits.

pring has officially made an entrance! Trees have bloomed, birds are singing, and there’s been enough rain for the entire season.

Fresh air and blooms are exactly what families need right now.

Louisiana springs come early, and it’s the perfect time of year to create an outdoor oasis so you can spend time enjoying the fresh air. As winter urges us to focus on cozying our indoor spaces, the warmer months turn our attention to front porch sittin’. With a little creativity, we can make our outdoor areas just as welcoming.

There are three simple items you need to create an outdoor oasis. First, and most important, is comfortable seating. Look for outdoor sofas or loveseats with big, comfy cushions. This encourages family to nestle in and relax.

Furniture placement should be considered too...placing seating facing one another to ensure easy conversation.

Think of outdoor spaces as small “living rooms” to gather. Neutral and gray tones are perfectly compatible with any style outdoor space! Outdoor furniture constructed of wicker or metal provide many years of outdoor use and only require seasonal upkeep. In addition, piles of cozy, weather-proof pillows generate a feeling of coziness.

outdoor oasis is to add pretty plants and flowers.

Recent studies have shown that flowers provoke happiness and life satisfaction. We can all use some happiness! It’s a good idea to think out-ofthe-box when selecting planters or containers for your seating area. Wine barrels or buckets make nice planters and come in a variety of styles and sizes. Smaller ceramic vessels are great for plants like carnations or succulents. Buckets overflowing with lavender make a beautiful centerpiece for an outdoor coffee table or side table. Hydrangeas grow well in containers, bloom into summertime and provide big pops of color in a shaded seating area. Mixing beautiful blooms with rustic containers make for a nice contrast in any style outdoor oasis.

And the third and last way to create a beautiful outdoor oasis is to mix vintage with new items.

Especially in outdoor spaces, a vintage item can really highlight the new items. An antique wooden bench looks nice paired with the new wicker loveseat. Consider wooden vintage French bistro chairs to complete a seating area. This makes for great conversation and creates the feeling of an outdoor room for your family to enjoy ice cold lemonade. Provide small spaces for drinks or candles, using vintage baskets or stools. A wooden indoor table can become a cozy spot for an outdoor dinner, when given a fresh coat of outdoor paint.

Again, the contrast of vintage with new makes an outdoor oasis welcoming.

COTILLION

A tradition that sparks economic development Cotillion has been called one of Shreveport’s most important yearly events. The Cotillion Club has maintained its relationship with the Holiday in Dixie Festival and strives to bring about significant economic impact and a continued interest in the Ark-La-Tex. In 1949 the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce along with local merchants and civic leaders held committee meetings to research the creation of a permanent festival for the area. Shreveport was a fast growing city and just 114 years old. The Holiday in Dixie Festival’s purpose was to bring the population of the metropolitan area together to stimulate interest in the greater Shreveport area while boosting the local economy.

The first festival was held May 22 through 26, 1949 and its theme was “Moonlight and Magnolias”. Local civic clubs, the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce and the Shreveport Symphony came together and shared their resources and collective talents to make Holiday in Dixie and the Cotillion a success. Some of the events held were: Special services in area churches, a children’s parade in downtown Shreveport, a yachting regatta, a special symphony at the Municipal Auditorium on Grand Avenue and a Cotillion Ball that was attended by over 500 couples.

Inspired by the New Orleans Mardi Gras Krewe balls, especially the tradition of Rex, the Cotillion Club was established in 1949 by Holiday in Dixie organizers as a grand social fete that celebrated the festival weekend and its participants.

2020 Cotillion Postponed Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Executive Committee of the Cotillion Club has elected to postpone the Cotillion Ball which was slated for Friday, April 17th. The ball has been moved to Friday, July 31, 2020. The location will remain the same, Shreveport’s historic Municipal Auditorium.

The hope of the Executive Committee is that this postponement will allow time for the virus to be more contained and larger public gatherings to resume.

There’s a lot of sensationalistic coverage on the news and the internet. Misinformation has a way of seeping into our minds through facebook and twitter. Be discerning about how you are getting your news.

Check for updates throughout the day but take care not to be compulsive. Constantly watching the news and the internet is a recipe for anxiety. Too much media can leave you feeling overwhelmed.

pyrotechnics galore. KREWE OF NEMESIS The Krewe of Nemesis held their Grande Bal III “Neon Nights” at the Springhill

Community Activities Center. At Club Nemesis Captain Tim Mouser “Jimmy Buffett” and Co-Captain Ronda Taylor “Janis Joplin” led their krewe on an enchanted musical journey. Along for the tour were Dukes and Duchesses dressed as musical legends such as Elton John, Cher, Steven Tyler and Stevie Nicks. King III Matt Smith, dressed all in black, emerged from a cloud of smoke as “Johnny Cash.” Queen III Michelle Parkerson made a glitzy entrance as “Dolly Parton.”

After the tableau, guests lined up to ride the mechanical bull for a fun filled evening.

What an action-packed night hanging out with the Superhero Royals at the Krewe of Justinian Grand Bal XXVI. “The Justinian League” held their Grand Bal at the Horseshoe Riverdome or “Gotham City” as it was known during this Mardi Gras Gala. Even Lt. Gov Billy Nungesser celebrated with the krewe as a special guest of King Jeff Cox. Led by Captain Rebecca Edwards, the Justinian Royals saved the day as each was escorted by a caped crusader. King XXVI Jeff Cox (the Justice of Justinian) reigned over the night with his elegant Queen XXVI Helen Herzog.
