Welcome Warm Greetings from BYLP! We hope this letter finds you well and thriving. We are excited to share the incredible journey of BYLP's evolution into a comprehensive non-profit, now firmly established in Elk Grove, CA. Over the years, our commitment to making a positive impact has led us to expand our horizons, offering support in various areas such as networks, academic assistance, educational advocacy, mindfulness programs, Celebration Weekend including a Black Graduation and the enlightening podcast, "Black v. Board of Education." As we continue on this inspiring journey, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment, eager to re-establish our flagship program, The Legislative Open House. This program has been a cornerstone of our efforts to foster civic engagement and empower our young people through direct interaction with legislative processes. The Legislative Open House has historically been a platform for dialogue, understanding, and collaboration between our community members, Capitol staff and legislators. It's a space where hands on experience with the Legislative process happens, experiential teaching methods are deployed, voices are heard, and positive change begins to take shape. Now, more than ever, we seek your support for the 2024 Legislative Open House, Friday, March 15th. We strongly believe in the transformative power of collective action, and your participation is instrumental in sustaining the creation of spaces that inspire and empower. To achieve this, we are seeking assistance in securing access to both the Senate and Assembly floors, committee rooms, financial support, and Capitol community volunteers for the 120+ youth who will descend upon the Capitol for this program. Your collaboration is pivotal for the spirit of The Legislative Open House and leaving a lasting, positive impact on the lives of California's Black youth. Join us in this endeavor, and together, let's make a meaningful difference. If you have any questions or would like more details about how you can support this effort, please feel free to reach out to us at info@bylp.org. Together we can do amazing things for our next generations. Thank you in advance for considering our invitation, and we look forward to your valued support. Sincerely,

Lorreen R. Pryor President/CEO

Legislative Open House History Established in 1999 and officially incorporated in 2001, Black Youth Leadership Project’s (BYLP) Legislative Open House (LOH) has been a highly anticipated event since its inception. This flagship program provides invaluable experiential learning and exclusive Capitol access to participants. For some students, attending the Legislative Open House marks their first entry into the Capitol Building, making it a truly special occasion. The significance of the Open House lies in its mission to help students explore their interests in public policy, California politics, governmental service, civic service, and community service. The one-day program offers a unique experience, including participating as a Mock Member of the Legislature at the State Capitol. This involves the election of peer legislative leaders, lively debates on current issues through the introduction of legislation, and the lobbying of bills during committee hearings and the Assembly & Senate floor sessions. What makes this event special is that the small group “committee” workshops are led by legislative staff, community advocates, and 3rd House volunteers who play a crucial role throughout the day assisting students in developing their leadership and public speaking skills. The Legislative Open House is not just an event; it's a transformative opportunity for students to engage with the legislative process, broaden their perspectives, and nurture their potential as the future leaders of California.
