2020 Chardonnay, Grace Benoist Ranch, Carneros Estate Grown

Etude was founded on the philosophy that winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before the harvest, with superior grape growing leading to wines with authentic varietal expression and a telling reflection of where they are grown and produced.

Vineyard

An exemplary expression of Grace Benoist Ranch estate vineyard, this wine is a blend of the best blocks on the Ranch, tucked away in the far northwest corner of the Carneros appellation. Unlike most Carneros vineyards, which are largely uplifted bay bottoms with soils composed of clay, the soils of Grace Benoist Ranch are variations of volcanic origin. Combining these well-drained, rocky upland soils with the extreme western location closer to San Pablo Bay, makes this cooler site an ideal place to grow Burgundian varieties. Vineyard blocks are individually managed to conform to various soil types and the changing contours of the hillside topography. Individual vineyards within Grace Benoist Ranch average only eight acres in size, and spacing is dense to ensure low per vine yields of fully concentrated fruit. As stewards of the property, Etude remains steadfast in our commitment to adhere to sustainable agricultural practices that enable us to farm in concert with the surrounding environment. Wildlife corridors, raptor roosts and owl boxes are abundant throughout the Ranch.

Vintage

The 2020 season will be remembered for factors beyond the typical harvest season. It was a warm, dry winter and the rain and cooler weather didn’t arrive until the end of March. While the mild spring season was a great early start, our winery working conditions had extensive safety protocols due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Summer brought very cool mornings and very warm days, but then harvest was interrupted by wildfires across California, which came as grapes started to be picked, and we were very fortunate that none of our vineyards were in the areas of the active fires. The white wine harvest started in late August, with the wines showing excellent development in cellars, reflecting the fine vintage year.

Winemaking

The fruit for our Carneros Estate Chardonnay was harvested at night and gently whole-cluster pressed before being transferred to neutral French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine was bottled after 8 months of maturation, with a periodic stirring of the yeast lees for the initial two months of aging to enhance aromatics and increase mid-palate texture. Our Chardonnay is crafted to showcase the unique terroir of Grace Benoist Ranch and did not go through malolactic fermentation in order to preserve the natural acidity and beauty of cool-climate Carneros Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes

From six special acres in the heart of the Grace Benoist Ranch, our estate Chardonnay is exemplary of all that is alluring about Carneros. Beautifully bright and vibrant, this Chardonnay is full of balance and grace, crafted intentionally to showcase the expressive fruit and terroir, so there is no malolactic fermentation and the lightest touch of oak. With a bouquet of white floral blossom, citrus fruits, and brioche toast notes on the nose, complementary flavors of white peach, Meyer lemon, Golden Delicious apple, and marzipan, are interwoven seamlessly on the palate. Medium-bodied with a crisp minerality and creamy texture, a signature from Grace Benoist Ranch, shows a lovely freshness with mouth-watering acidity. Finishing long and dry with a savory flintiness, this wine is refreshing and elegant.

2020 Pinot Noir, Grace Benoist Ranch, Carneros Estate Grown

Etude was founded on the philosophy that winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before the harvest, with superior grape growing leading to wines with authentic varietal expression and a telling reflection of where they are grown and produced.

Vineyards at Grace Benoist Ranch

The Etude Carneros Pinot Noir hails from our estate vineyards tucked away in the far Northwest corner of the Carneros appellation, just on the Southwest corner of Sonoma. Unlike most of Carneros, which is largely uplifted bay bottoms with soils composed of clay, the soils at Grace Benoist Ranch are variations of soils influenced by volcanic origin. Combining these well-drained, rocky upland soils with the extreme western location closer to the Pacific Ocean and San Pablo Bay make this site an ideal place to grow Burgundian varieties. The vineyard parcels at Grace Benoist Ranch conform to the various soil types and the changing contours of the Ranch topography. Individual vineyards average only eight acres in size and spacing is dense to ensure low per vine yields of fully concentrated fruit. Grace Benoist Ranch is farmed to Etude’s exacting standards, using environmentally sound viticultural practices. The Ranch is sustainably farmed and certified by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance as well as Fish Friendly Farming. At the Ranch, there are four smaller vineyards (Laniger, Deer Camp, Temblor and Heirloom) with five principal unique soil types and 20 distinct Pinot Noir clones.

Vintage

The 2020 season is considered another successful vintage, despite being remembered for factors beyond the typical harvest season. The red wine harvest started in late August, with the wines showing excellent development in cellars, reflecting the fine vintage year.

Winemaking

The Carneros Estate Pinot Noir underwent cold maceration in small lot open-top fermenters with extended time on the skins and including a small number of whole clusters. Vineyard lots are vinified and aged individually, and final blending is subject to a rigorous selection process, whereby only the best casks are chosen to represent the Grace Benoist Ranch Estate Pinot Noir. The wine is aged in French Oak with a small percentage of new barrels.

Tasting Notes

This ruby red, garnet-colored gem of a Pinot Noir is youthful and vibrant, with boisterous red berry fruit aromas on the nose. This character is mimicked on the palate with flavors of red raspberry, Bing cherry, pomegranate, pink peppercorn, and a hint of floral potpourri, supported by earthier notes of clay and leather. The mouthfeel is bright and lively with linear tannins and finishes long and supple with hints of caramel, and spiced clove, a signature characteristic often found in Grace Benoist Ranch Pinot Noirs. Ethereal and soft with a fresh core of acidity, ideally suited to pair alongside a variety of cuisines and culinary dishes.
